Brief History

• 1920 Nutrition, one of the many disciplines within the Department of Home Economics

• 1982 Home Economics streamlined into the Nutrition & Food

Science Program and moved to the School of Health Sciences

• 1998 Hunter’s fiscal pressures caused NFS program become a track in the

newly constituted UPH program

• 2010 Nutrition became one of the five programs in the CUNY SPH

Admission Requirements For BS in NFS

Science Pre-Requisites: (24 cr) • General Chemistry (CHE 100-101)—4.5 cr—NOW 6 CR• Organic Chemistry (CHE 120-121)—4.5 cr• Anatomy (BIOL 120) —4.5 cr• Physiology (BIOL 122) —4.5 cr• Microbiology (BIOL 230)—3 cr• Statistics (STAT 113)---3 cr

NOTE: BIOCHEM is no longer a science pre-req

Application Process

• The NFS program accepts students only in the Fall semester

• UG students must submit a CUNY Transfer Application (deadlines vary—typically Feb 1)

• Must submit your e-tracking/advising form – It is a google form

• Submit your mid term grades for Spring classes by April 15 (to Dr. Navder)

BS-MS (DP) Pathway Students Can Pursue the RD Credential

• Upon graduation receive both BS and MS degrees• Complete an accredited Didactic Program

coursework (through the MS-Nutrition curriculum) and get a Verification Statement

• Will need to apply, get accepted into, and complete an accredited dietetic internship (DI)—get another Verification Statement

• Pass the Registration Examination for Dietitians• Complete continuing professional educational

requirements to maintain registration

BS-MS Option

• Only accept 1-4 students each year• If interested in the RD/RDN credential, UG students

should take the GREs in winter intersession• If not accepted into the BS-MS pathway, can apply by

the March 1 deadline for the MS Nutr program

• Purpose: To promote nutrition awareness and healthful practices at the school and our community

• Must I Complete All My Prerequisite Courses By The Time I Apply?

• No. Prerequisite courses must be completed by the end of the Spring semester of application. They can be registered for some pre-reqs in the Spring semester and should complete ALL pre-reqs by end of June. Qualified students will receive a conditional offer of acceptance as long as they can offer a feasible schedule for completion of their prerequisite course work by end of June. Accepted students who fail to complete all prerequisites will not be allowed to enter the program.

Do I need to get my science courses approved before I take them elsewhereYou do not have to get them approved. Follow the CUNY TIPPS (https://tipps.cuny.edu) to see course equivalencies between Hunter and other CUNY schools. Make sure to determine equivalency before taking the course.

How Many Students Apply to the NFS-Major. How Many Are Admitted?We receive about 150 applications and accept 25-30 per year (every Fall).

How Does The Department Decide Who Will Be Admitted To The Program? The department works with the UAPC and our admissions office and objectively evaluates each applicant using a point system. Your Pre-Requisite and Overall GPA are important. Applicants with the highest admissions points are accepted into the program, and the remaining qualified applicants are placed on an alternate list. In the event that any of the accepted students are unable to enter the program, an alternate will be offered a position in the program.

Can I Be A Part-Time Student If I Am Accepted Into The Program? The NFS major is a rigorous and structured program. The first semester’s course work builds on that of the next semester and courses must be completed in a particular sequence. If you do decide to go part time it will take you longer since these courses are offered once a year.
