Pastor’s Corner

Welcome one another, then, as Christ welcomed you,

for the glory of God. Romans 15:7

Welcome!

Maybe you grew up Catholic. Maybe you think of yourself as Catholic.

Maybe you haven’t been to church in a while. Or, you are worried that you won’t be welcomed here.

And maybe it feels awkward and scary to take that first step. Questions.

Doubts. Yearning, but not sure for what. We get it.

We’ve been there. Now we are here.

Maybe God is calling you, too. Just as you are.

Welcome home.

Dear Family and Friends of St. James,

Join us as we continue our Lenten journey as we begin Holy Week.

The Chrism Mass at Our Lady of the Angels Cathedral is at 7 pm on Monday. Archbishop Gomez will preside over the blessings of the Holy Oils. I encourage you to attend, as this is one of the most solemn and important liturgies of the liturgical year. On Holy Thursday, we celebrate the Mass of the Lord’s Supper at 7:30pm including the washing of the feet of the Apostles. For Jesus, it was the display of His humility. For the disciples, the washing of their feet was in direct contrast to their attitude, who had recently been arguing among themselves as to which of them was the greatest. For us, washing feet is symbolic of our serving

role in the body of Christ. It is a truly moving experience.

Good Friday is a day of fast and abstinence for Catholics. This is the only day of the year where Mass is not celebrated. On this day we meditate on the voluntary death of our Savior to redeem us from our sins. The Solemn Liturgy of this day includes the reading of the Passion, Veneration of the Cross and reception of Holy Eucharist (consecrated at the Mass of Holy Thursday). This Liturgy is celebrated at Noon and again at 7:30 pm.

After His crucifixion, Jesus was laid in a nearby tomb, and His body remained there on Holy Saturday. We observe a day of somber reflection and contemplate the world of darkness that would exist without the hope of Christ’s resurrection. Join us for the Office of Readings and Morning Prayer.

Consider participating at Easter Vigil Mass on Saturday evening beginning at 7:30 pm. Welcome the risen Lord and savior with your family and friends. It is truly a moving and memorable experience. We pray in darkness awaiting the light of the risen Lord and baptize

adults into the Church. Attend this one time, and you’ll soon feel inspired to make this a family tradition.

We struggle to understand and accept the immense love God has for each of us individually. The gift of eternal life in heaven is now possible. Let this Holy Week deepen our understanding of His Love for us as He stretched His arms to embrace all of us.

I pray that the Lord will touch the hearts of each and every one of you, your loved ones, your friends and people you encounter every day. May the love of Jesus shine forth from all of us. Blessings to you this Lent and always,

Msgr. Mike

Share the Gift of Home and Family

There are currently 18,000 children in foster care in LA and 400 children awaiting adoption. There is an urgent need for foster parents, especially parents who can take

in children under the age of 2, sibling groups, and children with special needs.

As Catholics, we know that the family is the basic building block of society, the "domestic church," where children find

love, stability, and are nurtured to grow to their full potential. And every child deserves a loving family.

Pray for these children, and their future adoptive parents that they may experience God’s unconditional love though the hearts of members of His Body on earth.

Consider becoming a Eucharistic Minister The Eucharist is the center of our Catholic faith. Receiving the Body and Blood of Christ nourishes our soul

and strengthens us. When a person is unable to attend Mass, our EMs to the sick and home bound deliver the Eucharist to them. Consider how this blesses and comforts those at difficult times in their lives.

Lighting a Candle We do not honor statues but the one whom that statue or

image represents. The light signifies our prayer offered in faith coming into the light of God. With the light of faith, we petition our Lord in prayer, or petition the saint to pray with us

and for us to the Lord. The light also shows a special reverence and our desire to remain present to the Lord in prayer even though we may depart and go about our daily business.

St. James Religious Education

Bravo to our wonderful 7th & 8th Graders who hosted the 8:00am Mass on Sunday, March 4: Dean and Nathan S, Mia S, Emilia A, Spencer S, Nikki C, Oliver W, Bryn Rose T, Samantha R, Alex G, Colin T and Leilani A for their outstanding participation as Readers, Greeters and Presenters of the Gifts. I am so proud of them. Also, a big thank you to our Junior High teachers: Jeannie Haworth, Dianne Staso and Cindy Clausen for all their help.

The Religious Education Conference took place on March 15 - 18. This is the largest event of its kind in the world, a wonderful four-day event sponsored by the Archdiocesan Office of Religious Education. Its objective is offering in-service education and spiritual formation to those in catechetical and related ministries. An estimated 40,000 adults attended. There were more than 300 workshops offered on various topics ranging from spirituality, music and personal development to biblical studies, theology and catechesis. I am very pleased to say that 43 of our teachers, aides and staff, along with 20 parishioners who are involved in various parish ministries at St. James, attended this outstanding in-service. It was a weekend rich with information, liturgy and fellowship!

Wow…what a great outpouring of love our students have shown to the poor and homeless in our community. Our Lenten service project was to donate cans of food to be used for the Feed the Needy program to provide soup, sandwiches and fruit to the homeless on Mondays, Wednesday and Fridays. Our students filled up two huge barrels and the cans keep coming in! We are most grateful to Barbara Mullen, our Third grade aide who coordinates this ministry, for all her help in this endeavor! Truly, children, your lives can and do make a positive difference in the lives of others. Thank you so much for your generosity to those in need.

May God bless each of you in a very special way this Lenten Season and remember to serve is a sign of love…do something special for someone each day of Lent.

Gospel Reflection

Our humanity bleeds through today's Gospel passages in more ways than one.

We see both elation and fall, hope in the midst of the darker sides of our natures. If we allow it, these Gospels hold a mirror to our own fickle hearts. The crowds cry "Hosanna" and the Apostles profess allegiance unto death. In a manner of days -- even hours -- Jesus is betrayed, abandoned, denied, condemned, tortured, and executed. As God, he could have stopped this horrific narrative from unfolding, but he doesn't. He al-lows free will to play itself out.

There are nearly two millennia between this spectacle and us. We can stand safely removed, if we choose. But Lent invites us to return to this story. Lent invites us to find ourselves in the people we encounter there.

Are we the repentant woman at Bethany?

Are we naysayers of such lavish piety? Have we acted in a way that betrays those we love or denies what we know to be good and true? Have we fallen asleep in our faith? Have we unfairly accused others of a crime or immorality we imagine, though perhaps they did-n't commit? Do we help others car-ry their burdens? Do we stand in solidarity with those who suffer? Do we care for the dying?

This week, take up today's Gospel again. Look carefully at the Passion narrative and sit with it in silence. Find yourself in the story and ponder its meaning for your own life. Journey with Jesus to the foot of the Cross so that you too may say, along with the faithful centurion, "truly this man was the Son of God!"

Everyday Stewardship

I read a story recently about a teacher who donated to one of her former students a kidney.

This tremendous act of selflessness came about because the young person had lost most of the function his kidneys due to an illness.

Literally, that teacher gave the gift of life to someone who wasn't her own child or another family member. This is certainly radical stewardship.

How far would you go to give of yourself so that another might live?

Would you have to love him or her like your own child or parent? No one can deny it would be a difficult decision, especially if your giving put your own health at risk.

Reflecting on these things helps to provide some perspective on the crucifixion of Jesus. Not only did he suffer tremendously at the hands of the Romans, he gave his life for us so we might live forever.

What does true stewardship look like? The cross is a symbol to us of total surrender. When we are called to give of ourselves in ordinary ways in daily life we sometimes hesitate and think twice.

Perhaps when we are unsure we should look to the cross and there we can find our strength. And then when the call comes to truly sacrifice and place our trust in God, we may have already developed a lifestyle that makes responding, "yes," that much easier. -Tracy Earl Welliver, MTS

Divine Mercy of Jesus

Join us for Divine Mercy Sun-day Mass & Chaplet of Divine Mercy Sunday, April 6, Mass at 2 pm, Chaplet at 3 pm.

Jesus appeared to St. Faustina in her convent cubicle and di-rected her to "paint an image according to the pattern you see, with the signature: Jesus, I trust in You" (Diary of St. Faustina, 47-48)

“The two rays denote Blood and Water. The pale ray stands for the Water which makes souls righteous. The red ray stands for the Blood which is the life of souls. These two rays issued forth from the very depths of My tender mercy when My agonized heart was opened by a lance on the Cross. These rays shield souls from the wrath of My Father. Happy is the one who dwell in their shelter, for the just hand of God shall not lay hold of him.” (Diary 299)

“Let no soul fear to draw near to Me, even though its sins be as scarlet” (Diary 699). In her Diary, Jesus told Sr. Faustina, “I desire that during these nine days you bring souls to the fountain of My mercy, that from there they may draw strength and refreshment and whatever grace they need in the hardships of life, and especially at the hour of death” (Diary, 1209). While the Chaplet can be said anytime, the Lord specifically asked that it be recited as a novena, promising that “By this Novena (of Chaplets), I will grant every possible grace to souls” (Diary 796).

When Pope John Paul canonized Sr. Faustina he also, on the same day, surprised the entire world by establishing Divine Mercy Sunday as a feast day for the entire Church. The feast day falls on the Second Sunday of the Easter season. On that day, Pope John Paul II declared, "This is the happiest day of my life."

Jesus told her that he would make her a missionary of his Divine Mercy to the world. As part of that mission, He gave her the prayers for the Divine Mercy novena, a nine-day prayer that begins on Good Friday of each year and ends on the Sunday after Easter Sunday. What makes this novena unique is that Jesus himself composed it and each day a prayer can be offered for one specific group of souls such as children, priests and religious, lukewarm souls, fallen-away Catholics, and so on.

‘But when they came to Jesus and saw that he was already dead, they did not break his legs.

Instead, one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear, and at once blood and water came out.’ Jn. 19:33-34

Catholic Q & A

Q: One of the Seven Sacraments of the Church has at its heart, the essence of “the call.” The grace, the gift, the sublime grandeur, and the noble service of ministry. What is this sacrament? A: It is the Sacrament of Holy Orders. It’s all about Bishops, presbyters, (Priests), Deacons, and those they serve.

As a young priest, St. Gregory found the words that give us a sense of the saving graces of this calling that is Holy Orders:

“We must begin by purifying ourselves before purifying others; we must be instructed to be able to instruct, become light to illuminate, draw close to God, to bring him close to others, be sanctified to sanctify, lead by the hand and counsel prudently.”

St. John Vianney summarized Holy Orders: “The Priesthood is the love of the heart of Jesus.”

Read about the sacrament of Holy Orders in your catechism. J. P. Alegria

Here’s where to find parking for Mass

Parking is available at two lots by Parish Office as shown above. Parking is also available behind RUHS. Thanks to the generosity of the police detectives, the reserved spaces in their lot are available for our use. Always remember them in your prayers.

Habitat for Humanity Build Days

The Habitat for Humanity Catholic Coalition has set aside one Saturday each month until June for a multi-parish build day. As a member parish of the coalition, St James can provide up to 8 volunteers for each date.

The build days will take place in Long Beach on April 14, May 12 and June 16.

If you want to volunteer on one or more of these dates, email Tom Miller at [email protected] or 310.971.7589

Four homes are being built at the site and are in various stages of construction, so there will be a variety of tasks. Volunteers must be at least 16 years old. More details will be provided to volunteers as each build day approaches. This is a great opportunity to work

alongside volunteers from other Catholic churches.

Acceptable Time

We beg you not to receive the grace of God in vain. For he says, "In an acceptable time I have heard you; on a day of salvation I have helped you."

Now is the acceptable time! Now is the day of salvation! We avoid giving anyone offense, so that our ministry may not be blamed. On the contrary, in all that we do we strive to present ourselves as ministers of God. 2 Cor.6:1-4a

St. James Business Professionals

Our next meeting will be at SPIRES Restaurant on the corner of Hawthorne and Torrance Blvd at 7:30am on April 4, the first Wed. of April to have an open discussion.

It will be on helping solve problems that we all have as Business Professionals. Network goal is to put more St James Professional together as people to do business with to share our service with fellow parishioners. Let’s keep our faith in God as we do business. Nick Tesi 310.717.2937

Tell children about all types of Strangers

Most children know something about stranger danger, but do they know about friendly strangers? Many predators will use tricks to lure young victims such as asking for help walking a dog, offering candy, or pretending to know their parents. No matter how friendly someone may be, children should know that if they don’t know the person, they should never go anywhere with them. Give kids simple rules: it’s okay to run away from someone you don’t know, and to shout “no!” or “go away!” if a stranger is talking to you or asking you to go anywhere.
