Congratulations to ActivAsia on the launch of HomeBoUND magazine.

The development of our tourism industry provides an important avenue for economic growth and promotes a deeper appreciation of our country’s heritage among foreign visitors, and even among our own people. In line with the thrust of our Public-Private Partnerships program, our administration aims to work in cooperation with industry stakeholders to encourage the improvement of our travel and hospitality services, to increase awareness about prime tourist destinations nationwide, and to ensure that the gains from these ventures benefit our local economies and translate to employment opportunities for our citizens.

Thus, we welcome the publication of the maiden issue of HomeBoUND magazine, which will introduce our rich variety of natural and manmade attractions to overseas Filipinos, Filipino-Americans, and US-based travelers. It is my hope that each issue will feature reliable and up-to-date information on the numerous sites with historical and cultural significance - ranging from the familiar to the unexplored – throughout the Philippines.

Now is our time for concerted action and firm commitment – a time for all Filipinos to unite toward the achievement of our common aims. Guided by the legacy of our glorious past and inspired by our vision of a vibrant future, let us continue along the straight and righteous path to lasting peace and equitable progress.

Forget the automobiles that have taken over manila’s roads. The best way to get to know the Philippine capital is by using your own two feet. Find out how with this list of walking tours that cater to a wide spectrum of interests for those who want to get acquainted with this city.

Transitio Manila: beauty beyond the rubbleTransitio manila 1945 takes tourists back

to the time the Japanese-American conflict obliterated the Philippine capital and killed more than 120, 000 people. “our beloved manila was never the same again,” Carlos Celdran says, qualifying the name ‘Transitio’. He notes, however, that this event should not be viewed from the lens of tragedy, but from the lens of the unique beauty that this piece of history brings into the Philippine capital.

AMAZING TRAVELS

Transitio begins at the manila metropolitan Cathedral Basilica. This cathedral church has had its share of destruction and countless transitions that Celdran narrates to his tour participants, having had four versions undergoing natural and man-made disasters such as fires, typhoons, earthquakes, and the Battle of manila. Fortunately, the fifth cathedral has lasted for half a century and counting.

The tour also has Fort Santiago, a 16th century military defense structure that was captured by the Japanese during World War II, in its itinerary. Just outside the fort, the queue for the karuwahe (horse-drawn carriage) tours can be found.

There are also some modern changes in Intramuros that Transitio shows tourists. Just beside the manila Cathedral is an abandoned

lot where graffiti artists such as the Pilipinas Street Plan create urban art on its concrete walls. There, Celdran gives some historical tidbits about the Spanish, American, and Japanese occupation – with some Spanish music and 1940s American tunes playing in the background.

At the end of the tour are the art show and the most awaited event of the tour: the releasing of spirit lanterns which adorn the night sky and symbolize the renewed sense of love for old manila. Contact Carlos Celdran for more info: [email protected]

Binondo Food Wok: A tour for the stomach“What better way to share culture and

history than through the sharing of food?” says Ivan man Dy from old manila Walks. Hence,

in the country. Central to the tour is, of course, the manila Central Post office that heads the Philippine Postal Corporation. Inside the building is an exhibit that shows off the best Philippine postal stamps, old mailboxes that you don’t see outside on the streets anymore, as well as trademark office supplies such as typewriters.

one other must-see is the manila metropolitan Theater, which was once the ultimate hub for culture in the capital. Although it had been closed down back in the 90s, there has been renewed interest in the building since 2010. It helps that the interior design of the buiding, with its stained glass and ceilings sporting mango and banana leaves, have retained their allure for art and history-buffs.

other stopovers comprise Puerta de Isabell II, the National Press Club, Plaza Roma, among others. Contact Lawrence Chan for more info: [email protected].

the Big Binondo Food Wok. With the aim of informing people about the history of manila’s own Chinatown, man Dy takes tourists around Binondo and points out the places that serve food that you usually won’t find in mainstream Chinese restaurants in the city.

Some highlights include, a hole-in-the-wall restaurant that serves a northern style of dumpling; a restaurant famous for its large fresh lumpia that will have your stomachs filled from lunchtime until dinnertime; and the siopao (meat bun) place in ong Pin that boasts of making siopao that doesn’t need sauce for flavouring. The Food Wok has more places in store for those who are interested. No need to bring your own chopsticks; only your empty stomach. Contact Ivan man Dy for more info: 09173291622

Surely, you tell yourself, there’s no good reason to ever leave the comfort of the metro—especially not for something as readily available as food. The number of specialty and ‘authentic’ cuisine hotspots around metro manila means that getting a taste of Luzon’s best kept secrets is sometimes just a speed dial away. Besides, why would anyone want to brave the dust, the lines and the fuel stops associated with long distance travel for delicacies you can find on any manila street corner?

Because sometimes we have to admit, at least when it comes to dining, that the grass is truly greener on the other side. Despite a number of imitations (and the occasional home grown hotspot), there really is nothing quite like the real thing. And although having a bowl of bulalo in a comfortable Quezon City nook with friends and family can be a pretty invigorating experience, you’d be hard-pressed to find anyone who would prefer that to a boiling bone marrow feast overlooking the Taal Volcano. In life, as in art, imitations rarely compare to the original.

So here are a few Luzon delicacies that should have you up and running to your nearest bus terminal or gassing up your 4x4 for the trip ahead. Though you might think these treats are common because of their supermarket equivalents, a taste of what makes them a hit in their own regions is more than likely to show you what you’ve been missing all this time. So grab your gear and prepare for a gastronomic adventure in the following places:

Bicol’s Chili Ice CreamTo say that you are eating chili ice cream is like claiming to drive a cheap Ferrari—quite unfathomable to a great many. But lo and behold, the spiciest region of the Philippines offers just that. Leave your regular dirty ice cream in the metro where it belongs, Legazpi City’s chili ice cream is the real deal, combining a creamy goodness with a spiciness that can overwhelm an unwitting visitor. most popularly served at the 1st Colonial Grill, which is also known for a variety of other local dishes, the chili ice cream is a favourite of the adventurous—the perfect reward after zip-lining or diving with whale sharks. You won’t be blowing hot and cold with this frozen delight!

Pampanga’s famous Halo-HaloIf your only experience of the world-famous halo-halo is in a manila street corner, we don’t blame you. The winning combination of shaved ice, milk, leche flan, makapuno, ube and langka has been a perennial favourite across the nation not only for great taste, but for the ease of its production. An average Juan with a little bit of creativity and a little patience can create a reasonably good snack for a hot afternoon. So why bother taking that long drive? Because no other halo-halo compares to Pampanga’s. The home of the now-famous Razon’s, as well as innovative halo-halo makers Kabigting’s and Halo-Halo sa Corazon, Pampanga offers variety combined with quality. Never too sweet and having just the right combination of ingredients, the difference from your everyday halo-halo will be evident at first bite. For the more adventurous, Kabigting’s offers its halo-halo with carabao milk, rather than the usual evaporated kind, for a smoother taste.

Bagnet from the Ilocos many of us are familiar with the Ilocano penchant for sinful food. Though example like lomi and longganisa are frequent mentions when it comes to the region, very few food items come close to the wicked temptation of bagnet. Also known as the Ilocano answer to lechon kawali, bagnet is actually deep fried twice before it reaches the crispy golden-brown that has captured many a heart (in more ways than one). A word of caution though, as the bagnet, like many of the delectable options of the region, is pretty high in cholesterol, hence moderation is advised. A tough piece of advice to follow, when your next trip to Vigan involves a healthy serving of bagnet with sukang iloko to make your visit a memorable one.

Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National ParkPalawan Province

The Puerto Princesa Underground River allows visitors to cruise by boat in a cavern set amidst a spectacular limestone karst landscape. one of the river’s unique features is that it emerges directly into the sea, and its lower portion is subject to tidal influences. According to UNeSCo, the area is a significant habitat for biodiversity conservation and contains a full “mountain-to-sea” ecosystem.

“It was fun and scary at the same time to

make our way inside the caves in the dark, with just the aid of a flashlight. There were bats above us, stalactites and stalagmites; but what’s amazing were the rock formations like the Holy family, mother mary, Joseph and the Child Jesus, and The Last Supper. It was really amazing,” shares Armi Sabiniano, who vacationed with friends in Palawan recently.

Historic Town of ViganProvince of Ilocos Sur

exploring the streets of Vigan is like stepping back in time. Vigan is in the list for its fusion of

Philippine, Chinese and european architecture, resulting in a “culture and townscape that has no parallel anywhere in east and South-east Asia” according to UNeSCo. The scenic North-Western road to Vigan and the excellent food are added attractions, according to motorcycle magazine associate editor Karlo De Guzman, who rode around Ilocos sites including Vigan in 2010.

“It’s historic, scenic, peaceful, yet is not too far from manila. The Heritage Village is how a street would be like if it were bottled-up and then kept in a museum, where traditional pottery is still practiced nearby. It’s also where bagnet (deep-

fried pork belly), pakbet (vegetables in shrimp paste) and Vigan empanada can be savored to its honest-to-goodness authenticity,” says de Guzman.

are included in the list because of their unique architectural style, which reinterpret the european Baroque by Chinese and Philippine craftsmen.

Rice Terraces of the Philippine CordillerasIfugao Province, Cordillera Region, Luzon

According to UNeSCo, the high rice fields of the Ifugao have followed the contours of the mountains for over 2,000 years. The Rice Terraces located in the remote areas of the Philippine Cordillera mountain range is an outstanding example of an evolved, living cultural landscape. Backpacker and travel blogger Ferdz Decena first visited the Cordilleras in 2003, and has since gone back and forth more than six times.

“I think the Cordilleras and its people are the heart of culture in our country. For cultural immersion and some of the best mountain views in the country, the Ifugao culture is truly unique. The Ifugaos are very hospitable and the rice terraces never fail to leave me in awe on each visit and trekking some trails will reward people with natural wonders like waterfalls and stunning mountainscapes,” says Decena.

Tubbataha Reefs Natural ParkMunicipality of Cagayancillo, Province of Palawan

The Tubbataha Reef marine Park is said a unique example of an atoll reef with a very high density of marine species, the North Islet serving as a nesting site for birds and marine turtles. UNeSCo says the site is an excellent example of a pristine coral reef with a spectacular 100-m perpendicular wall, extensive lagoons and two coral islands. It’s also the only purely marine World Heritage Site in Southeast Asia, according to conservationists.

Rina Bernabe-de Alban, who works for Conservation International-Philippines, one of the groups involved in protecting the Tubbataha Reefs, shares her experience diving in the pristine waters.

“For avid divers, a Tubbataha sojourn is a definite must. one should be an experienced diver before tackling Tubbataha because aside from the deeper and more challenging dives, you have to be able to keep your wits about you when you are finally faced with the glorious sights that Tubbataha has to offer,” she says.

Azta Urban SalonConveniently located in different areas around

metro manila, this stylish salon is inspired by the latest trends in fashion locally and internationally. Since it began in 2004, the salon had gradually earned its reputation for having a very pleasant and competent creative team.

more than just the basic Haircutting, Styling, Treatment, Coloring, and Nail Services offered by most salons, Azta Urban Salon offers a wide selection of specialized services such as Digital Perming, eyelash extensions, eyelash Perming, Dreadlocks, Braids, Corn Rows, and various Hair Art Styles.

entering the salon transports you to a very hip and stylish interior similar to that of a typical office of a glamorous fashion magazine. each hair service is started with a staff analyzing your

hair to recommend the best possible service for your hair, normally on a typical salon, you will be asked to go to the wash area for them to shampoo your hair. But at Azta, being the cool salon that it is, let’s you sit comfortably on your chair as they dry shampoo your hair. You still need to have your hair rinsed at the wash area though. An added plus which most people would love: they give you a soothing back massage as you wait for the hair products to set in. Walking out the doors of Azta Urban Salon, is a different case though, your hair will be shinier, bouncier and softer than when you first entered the salon.

1Tip: Promos and discounts are given by the salon from time to time. So be sure to call them up or check online prior to your visit to get the best deal.

Loida Nicolas Lewis in managing the businesses she inherited from her husband, her career as attorney by profession and how she won her discrimination case against US Immigration and Naturalization Services (INS) in 1987, her credential as the First Filipina who passed the New York bar exam without having been educated in law school in the United States and her leadership abilities as the Chairperson of the National Federation of Filipino American Associations and as the Chairperson of the U.S. Pinoy for Good Governance.

This article shall focus on her values, principles and perspectives on how she managed to integrate these aspects in coping with challenges and crisis as a business woman which ranked her number 1 among the “Top 50 Women Business owners in America” by the Working Woman magazine in 1994.

The late African-American business tycoon, Reginald F. Lewis stated in one of his speaking engagements that his family influence, his keen desire for independence and the support of his wife, Loida were the sources of his strength and success in life. He declared that Loida is one of the least materialistic persons that he knows and he is indebted to her for his achievements. Lewis stated that it is important for each person to have core values in life. In his case, he stated that family, hard work and trust were the important factors that guided him in facing his own struggles as a newspaper boy at the age of 9, a Harvard-law school student, a law practitioner and a successful businessman.

The core values of her husband, her own set of principles and Filipina values served as the guiding light of Loida Nicolas Lewis in pursuing her challenging life as Reginald’s business successor.

First and foremost, Loida attributed her success to God. Her strong faith in God helped her in facing her own crisis; the most challenging was the death of her husband who suffered from brain cancer in 1993. She never lost hope and provided comfort to him during his six-month struggle as a cancer patient. Although, she eventually accepted God’s will, the death of her

husband devastated her for almost a year. The challenge of saving Reginald’s company

from possible bankruptcy made her realize that there was a need for her to be on top of the management of the TLC Beatrice International Holdings. With no formal business management skills, she believed that it was all in accordance with God’s plan and she had to pray hard for her to succeed. She always starts her business meetings with a prayer, an uncommon practice in the business community in the U.S. After a year, she was able to prove her leadership capability through saving the company from US$22 million losses and even generating an earning of US$1 million.

Loida’s business philosophy is “wealth has to come from profits with honor.” She emphasized that her philosophy is deeply rooted on her spiritual belief: “Love everyone as Jesus has loved you.” She believes that profits should be shared with those who created value for the shareholders regardless of their positions in the companies. She expressed her appreciation to the employees for their job well done and opened her lines of communication with them.

other qualities of Loida that can be shared to aspiring and striving entrepreneurs are the values of hard work, patience and diligence. She stated in a TV interview, that these are critical factors in order to make a difference in our lives. She agrees that “luck in business” is possible but it is important for an entrepreneur to prepare for it through working hard, studying all intricacies of the business and learn from their mistakes.

In her case, failure was not an option. Her little knowledge in business was not a hindrance in taking over the management of TLC. She asked several questions in order to learn all details of company operations. She studied the business, sought the help of experts, made critical decisions and eventually ended up as a self-made entrepreneur.

Loida believes that a person’s humble beginnings (like her husband) should not matter in pursuit of excellence. What matters most is the ability of the person to rise above poverty or any difficult situation that they are facing through doing the best that they can become and through a strong connection with their Highest Creator.

And after achieving economic success, the next step is giving back – sharing the blessings with the less fortunate.

“Without faith a man can do nothing ; with it all things are possible”

Diaspora to Development: Global Summit of Filipinos in the Diaspora

Strengthening Ties That Bind

Close to nine million Filipinos live and work overseas. We hear about the travails of our oFW sector that comprises about half of Filipinos abroad on a daily basis. The other half is less headline grabbing - Filipino emigrates, many having quietly left the Philippines decades ago for numerous reasons. Armed with dreams and the ambition to attain a better life for themselves and their families, they have achieved measures of success in the countries in which they live. Quite a few live comfortably, manage established, flourishing businesses and are socially involved. There are consequences from having lived abroad for so long - their successor generations may no longer be familiar with, or tied strongly to, mother Philippines.

empowered by the commitment to promote policies aimed at reinvigorating the ties that bind all Filipino émigrés to their home country through business, arts and culture and youth development, as well as banking on renewed optimism in the Philippines brought on by major confidence in the administration of President Benigno S. Aquino III, the Commission on Filipinos overseas (CFo) calls on all Filipinos that live abroad, their relatives based in manila, and immigrants that have returned to the Philippines to participate in Diaspora to Development: Global Summit of Filipinos in the Diaspora (D2D). The CFo, headed by Sec. Imelda m. Nicolas, hopes to inspire overseas Filipinos through this call to action - Be more than a Balikbayan. Ang kaalaman at kakayahan, iBaliksaBayan!

Convened by the CFo along with the National Federation of Filipino Associations in America (NaFFAA), US Pinoys for Good Governance (USP4GG), and Youth Leaders in the Diaspora (YouLeaD), the D2D conference will run from the 27th to the 29th of September 2011, at the Philippine International Convention Center in Pasay City. There will also be a pre-summit visit by NaFFAA and ASP4GG to the House of Representatives on September 26th.

The three day conference will tackle a variety of issues relevant to enriching the relationship between Filipinos abroad and the Philippines. Interesting subjects to look forward to are summed up in a ten point discussion line up - the Alay Dunong Program (skills and technology exchanges); Arts and Culture as well as education

interchanges; matching and referring businesses via a Business Advisory Circle; developing financial instruments and investment services via Diaspora Investment; motivating overseas Filipinos to support development projects in the homeland through Diaspora Philanthropy; inspire them to provide legal assistance to overseas Filipinos under the Global Legal Assistance and Advocacy; improved medical mission Coordination; facilitate the return of global Filipinos to the Philippines via a discussion on Return and Reintegration; and Tourism Initiatives hopes to bolster balikbayan programs and encourage migrant investment in local tourism business.

A very important segment of the summit will engage successor generations of Filipinos abroad. many young Filipinos born abroad are aware of the ties that bind them to the Philippines but may not know enough about the country and culture. YouLeaD or Youth Leaders in the Diaspora will take on this important interaction.

expected to speak at the symposium, among other notables, are US Ambassador to the Philippines H.e. Harry K. Thomas, CoA Commissioner Heidi mendoza, Author-in-Residence at Nanyang University maria Ressa, President of the Asian American Advertising Federation Greg macabenta, DFA Secretary Albert del Rosario, and former Secretary of the Department of Health, now the President and Ceo of The medical City, Dr. Alfredo R.A. Bengzon.

The D2D summit is supported by event partner ActivAsia Inc.; Department of Tourism; media partners Philippine Daily Inquirer and ABS-CBN Global Limited, the provider of TFC Worldwide; official publisher Vibal Publishing House, Inc.; official healthcare provider, The medical City; SmART Pinoy; the Philippine Retirement Authority; and Philippine Airlines.HB

HAPINoYHapinoy is empowering more Filipinos through enterprise.

Built on the backbone of the microfinance industry, microVentures Incorporated launched the Hapinoy Store Program in 2007. Learning that 15- 20% of microfinance borrowers acquire capital for their sari-

sari store business, Hapinoy first focused on aggregating these stores for bulk product discounts which then gave storeowners better prices for products.

Hapinoy – a play on the words “Happy Filipino” – works on the lack of access to goods and services at the Base of the Pyramid (BoP) by providing a scalable and sustainable platform for distribution and business development, especially in the most far-flung areas. The platform is built upon an existing network of over 800,000 sari-sari stores or micro-retail outlets already present in every village. The model builds on the ability to harness the power of this largely fractured and untapped system. Aside from leveraging the network of Hapinoy stores, it also works with small, medium and large enterprises to bring goods and services to the BoP. Hapinoy is currently present in 150 communities in the provinces of Batangas, Laguna, Cavite, Quezon, Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, Albay,

Sorsogon, Rizal, Bulacan and mindoro. Hapinoy will continue to expand to more and more communities all over the Philippines in the next few years.

Through the Program, an existing sari-sari store in an area becomes the assigned Community Store, which then services smaller village stores and the rest of the community. The Program works directly with a business partner: the Community Storeowner or the Nanay (Filipino for “mother”) and gives her the training and support she needs to run her business sustainably. Hapinoy also prioritizes Nanay’s personal development and empowerment by giving her the tools to become a leader in her community.

Hapinoy aims to help Nanay: • Have a profitable and sustainable business • Reap practical, tangible benefits from partners and microfinance institutions• Become knowledgeable with the help of training programs and support services• Be confident and empowered

In 2011, microVentures Foundation was born. Its mission is to focus on building the capacity and skills of Hapinoy Nanays and micro entrepreneurs all over the Philippines. The Foundation also provides needed expertise in leveling up micro entrepreneurs to potential small enterprises.

Aside from supporting the existing storeowners in the Hapinoy Program through regular training and coaching, the microVentures Foundation has started to provide support to a number of micro producers by helping them upgrade their products and give them access to a market outside their immediate communities.

Seen as an innovative model in the social enterprise field, Hapinoy’s work has been recognized both locally and internationally. In 2011, Hapinoy was awarded the grand prize in the Project Inspire grant competition of the United Nations. In 2010, co-founders Bam Aquino and mark Ruiz were recognized as finalists for the ernst & Young entrepreneur of the Year awards. In 2011, they were both awarded by the Schwab Foundation as the Asian Social entrepreneurs of 2011.HB

Rush hour, Philippines¬– a long queue of commuters impatiently waits on the sides of the busy streets in the city. For a moment, the people are rather quiet and calm but come the so-called “King of the Road”, these people would sometimes run just to get a seat inside the jeepney.

Inside the jeepeney, you will be elbow to elbow with ten people on each row, sometimes even more depending on what the driver feels like. If you are one of the late ones to get inside the jeepney, you might be able to experience what they call upong bente singko, a term Filipinos use to describe sitting only on a quarter or half of the seat that is normally allotted for one person, it is a joke meaning that one should only pay twenty five cents for this kind of seat.

With ten people on each row, expect that the nearer you are to the jeepney driver, the more times you would have to reach for other people’s payment and give it to the driver in front. on special cases though, and I think it is becoming a trend; the drivers employ a konduktor or an assistant. He would normally hang on the jeepney’s entrance, perhaps their talent is to be able to hang on a moving jeep while he gets the payment and not fall during the process.

As you ride the mighty “King of the Road” try looking around the interior of the jeep. Normally different signs posted will keep you amused for a while. Some of the common ones you will see are “God Knows Judas Not Pay”, ”Bayad muna Bago magtext at matulog” (Pay First Before Sleeping and Texting), “Basta Driver, Sweet Lover”, “You Pull, I Stop”. These signs are probably one of the clearest indications of Pinoy humor and wit.

every ride in a jeep is interesting in its own way, you will see different people and sometimes experience things like a person leaning on you as he sleeps, long hair slapping on your face as the jeepney moves, and sometimes the occasional romance of two people that met inside a jeep. Things happen as one goes on a journey to reach their destination. By the time you reach your destination, there are two things you can do to be able to get out of the jeepney, pull the string above and it will send a signal to the driver that someone has to go down or for jeepneys without strings, one would need to knock on the ceiling and shout “ma, Para po, sa tabi nalang po!” HB

Braving the Streets of DIVISORIA

Back in the Spanish period, people who were baptized as Christians were not allowed to trade in Intramuros, the Spanish capital. Non-Christianized Chinese merchants set-up their community and

shops in Binondo, Divisoria and other surrounding areas and had blossomed since then.

Words and Photographs by monica Viñas macalinao

Today, braving the busy streets of “Divi” will prove to be worth it once you had your fill of the endless bargain of goods offering the best value shopping for your hard-earned peso.

For the courageous, there are plenty of stalls on the street and alleys that sells everything from school supplies, clothes, fresh fruits and even kitchen supplies and utensils. As long as you are okay with the huge traffic of people, jeepneys, cars and the occasional kalesa, you will surely enjoy the good bargains you will find.

If you do not feel like hustling and bustling in the street, there are several malls you can choose from: Divisoria mall, 168 mall, 999 mall, meisic mall, and Tutuban mall. Similar to the items on the street, the malls offer everything even exercise equipments, hair salon products, fashion accessories and other household items. The list of things to buy is quite long though as they constantly add new and interesting things for the people to buy. They still have a huge crowd inside but the malls are air-conditioned and have more breathable hallways. Newer malls also offer convenient, ample and safe basement parking spaces and a wide variety of food options in their food court.

once you are there you will definitely learn the art of haggling. enjoy shopping!

“DIVI” TIPSHaggle, haggle, haggle. If you cannot get it at a reasonable price you want, walk away. other stores might offer the same item for a cheaper price.

Buy in bulk. Sellers often give more discount for people who buy their items in bulk.

Wear Comfortable Clothes and Shoes. Divi is not a place to look glamorous and attract unnecessary attention from pickpockets. You will also be walking a lot, best to leave your heels at home.

Just Bring Cash. No jewelries, fancy phones or anything important that may catch the eye of pickpockets. Credit cards are also of no use to this place.

Carry a Water Bottle. It can sometimes get hot specially if you prefer the streets of Divi.

also of corporate executives, oFWs, housewives, etc. who appreciate the links between looking good, feeling fantastic, and leading a better life.

Wellness and patient-partnershipThe CWA, then, is a fitting model for TmC’s unique

patient-partnership drive, wherein patients are encouraged to be active participants in their pursuit of health. The CWA’s highly elegant interiors, expert and thoughtful medical team, and state-of-the-art tools and techniques would not be as effective in bettering your wellbeing if you don’t exert your own efforts as well, from being honest with your doctor about your daily habits, to collaborating with him on developing the perfect program for you.

Thus, it is never too late to look and feel fantastic. True

beauty can be found everywhere, in everyone, and at all times, and all it takes is a positive attitude, a respect for your body, and the exceptional benefits of TmC’s Center for Wellness and Aesthetics to bring out that very beauty from within.

HB

“our philosophy is beauty through holistic health,” says Dr. Rolando A. Balburias, Consultant-Director of The medical City’s (TmC) Center for Wellness and Aesthetics (CWA).

The CWA, with its extensive range of services, from weight management programs to dermatological and dental procedures to sleep disorder therapy, ensures that every aspect of a person’s wellbeing can be addressed. moreover, all of these offerings advocate a healthy lifestyle as the root of a person’s positive qualities—a brand of beauty from the inside out.

Choosing life“Wellness is a decision, not a medication,” states Balburias. “The patient needs

to decide on living a healthy lifestyle.”

Nonetheless, getting regular physical exercise and maintaining a proper diet are only a part of this lifestyle. To be truly healthful, you must also address the social, mental and spiritual aspects of yourself. In this light, it is also important to understand that wellness cannot be rushed; there is no hasty surgical procedure or ‘quick fix’ that you can avail of instantly that has real long-term benefits.

Thus, the CWA’s wide range of products and services should not be treated as a shopping list. Instead, in consultancy with your preferred physician, you can determine which of these options should comprise your very own customized wellness program, whether you are under the CWA’s teen, adult, or geriatric clinic. This personalized approach is also especially valuable for those with specific conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, or even obesity. The CWA works with you towards dispelling bad diets, vices, poor hygiene and negative attitudes, which is a crucial step towards beating ailments for good.

True beauty basicsenhancing your physical appearance can also work wonders for your wellbeing.

Balburias explains that plastic surgery is not necessarily a luxury or is always done out of vanity. These procedures can be used to correct inborn imperfections or damage borne from disease, ageing or accidents—something that can boost self-esteem and encourage each person’s innate beauty to emerge.

“If a person feels good about his appearance, then he becomes more productive,” Balburias adds.

Thus, the CWA’s clientele boasts not only of movie star and model types who need to look good for a living, such as its spokesperson ms. Dina Bonnevie, but

LAND OF OPPORTUNITIES

Business Opportunities in the Philippines

The Philippines offers globally competitive business opportunities to encourage overseas Filipinos and other nationalities to invest in the country.

one of the significant indicators of a globally competitive business environment is the improvement of the telecommunication system such as efficiency in international communication through landline telephones, mobile phones and internet, proliferation of internet cafés, availability of Wi-Fi connection in residential areas, private offices and business establishments, presence of virtual offices and the provision of satellite system support in some places.

Based on 2009 census estimate, the Philippines has a total population of 92.23 million. eighty million of the total population are mobile phone users. Nine hundred million text messages per day are being processed by three major cellular networks Smart, Globe and Sun. mobile phones can be considered one of the basic needs and texting is becoming a way of life. This results in stiff competition among the mobile phone companies.

efforts are being exerted by the present government to promote a sustained equitable economic growth and to address the poverty problem in the country. The 2011 Investment Priorities Plan (IPP), a comprehensive action agenda was adopted to encourage investments, to mobilize private capital and to promote public-private partnership (PPP). IPP involves the promotion of activities that will provide employment opportunities and shall improve the delivery of basic social services.

The Board of Investment (BoI) is the lead government agency responsible for the promotion of investments in the Philippines. BoI shall translate IPP into concrete action by promoting the following investments in the thirteen priority areas, namely: agriculture/agribusiness and fishery; creative industries/

knowledge-based services; ship building; mass housing; energy; infrastructure; research and development; green projects; motor vehicles; tourism; strategic projects; PPP projects; and disaster prevention, mitigation and recovery projects.

Aware that the estimated 8.5 million overseas Filipinos who have contributed a historic high of US$18.8 billion in remittances in 2010 are potential investors, the Commission on Filipinos overseas (CFo), has created the Business Advisory Circle (BAC) composed of business experts from various business sectors.

20TH FESTIVAL OF PHILIPPINE ARTS AND CULTURE

Record crowds flocked to breathtaking Point Fermin Park in San Pedro, California, overlooking the Pacific ocean on the far western edge of Los Angeles to celebrate the Festival of Philippine Arts and Culture’s (FPAC) 20th Anniversary. Produced by non-profit arts organization, FilAm ARTS Inc., FPAC is the largest, annual Filipino event in the Southern California region and presents arts and crafts, unique vendors, Youth and Senior pavilions and continuous performances on three stages over the course of two days. This year’s highlights included performances by Lea Salonga, “Latin Soul King” Joe Bataan, Fil-Am Disney star Roshon Fegan (in his first Filipino event) and the 45-member Filipino American Symphony orchestra. The expanded culinary stage included four of LA’s top Filipino food trucks as well as a trio of renowned artisanal dessert makers. A special 9/11 commemoration included, for the first time, Filipino American members of the LA Fire Department, LAPD and County Sheriffs.

HITMAKERS & JESSA ZARAGOZA Rico J. Puno, marco Sison, and Nonoy Zuniga,

more popularly referred to these days as the “Hitmakers” with special guest Jessa Zaragoza wowed a crowd of 3000 Filipinos who packed the outdoor Amphitheater of Thunder Valley Casino in Lincoln, California (located 30 miles east of Sacramento) on September 10, 2011. It was the first time for the gentlemen icons of oPm to perform with sultry songstress and “phenomenal diva” Jessa, herself a true hitmaker with a string of chart-topping tunes to her name.

Their repertoire, peppered with rib-tickling antics by the inimitable Rico J. Puno, complemented by the drop-dead boyish good looks and soothing voice of marco Sison, and the cool and mesmerizing baritone of Nonoy Zuniga, the group dished out hit after hit that kept the audience simply spellbound and wanting more.
