Ryman Premier

MARGATE climbed three places to fourth in the table with a 1-1 home draw with Hastings in the division’s only

game on Saturday.

But they were left regretting a series of missed chances which cost them victory and left them still four points behind leaders Hampton, who have two games in hand.

Always on top, Margate went close in the first half when Alex Rhodes hit a post and took the lead four minutes after the break through Dan Stubbs. But they were unable to increase their advantage and paid the price when Brad Goldberg fired in a free-kick with eight minutes left.

Ryman North

GETTING the better of things in an early rush of goals, Maldon returned to the top of the table on Saturday with a 3-1 victory at Needham Market.

James Robinson headed the visitors into a third-minute lead but the Marketmen, still seeking their first home win of the season, hit back through Kieran Leabon in the seventh minute. Their delight was short-lived: Jamie Guy restored Maldon’s lead within 30 seconds. The action slowed after that and Johnathan Glowacki completed the scoring in the 36

th minute.

Previous leaders Grays, who were in FA Trophy action, were handed a bonus. They fell only to second place as the next two sides in the table both dropped points.

Potters Bar boss Adam Lee, for whom it was the 200th

game in charge of the Scholars, was unhappy to see his side held to a 2-2 home draw by bottom club Ware. The visitors, the only club in the league without a win,

grabbed an early lead through Tony Martin and held it until seven minutes before half-time, when Danny Johnson equalised. Chris Doyle put the Scholars ahead with 20 minutes left but Wes Beckles deflected a shot into his own net to square it again.

Two long-range shots by Corey Whitely ended fourth-placed Aveley’s six-match winning run in all competitions. Whitely launched his rockets about 20 minutes into each half for hosts Waltham Forest, who held on to win 2-1

after Jay Leader replied with 11 minutes left.

Heybridge moved up to fifth and piled on the pain for the Sudbury defence with their 4-2 home win. Sudbury,

who have conceded 14 goals in the past week, were two down in 12 minutes thanks to a Michael Cheek penalty and a Luke Callander strike. Callander was on target again before the half-hour, becoming the first player in any division to reach 11 league goals this season, and Russell Malton made it 4-0 with 20 minutes left. Tom Webb and Lee Boylan, with a penalty, provided a little consolation.

Thamesmead, now sixth, could be a real threat. They have a 100 per cent home record and chalked up their first away win with a lone goal at Tilbury, knocking their hosts out of the top five. Enoch Adjei was the scorer after 21

minutes.

Romford picked up their fourth away win and inflicted Harlow’s fifth home defeat, though such an outcome

looked very unlikely as the game went into its 45th minute. Harlow had completely dominated and might have led

by more than the two goals netted in quick succession midway through the half by Gary Bowes and Tom Davie.

Yet a penalty by Hussain Isa and a goal in added time by Nick Reynolds meant that it was all square at the interval, and Paul Clayton’s last-minute goal completed a 3-2 Romford victory which takes them to 19 points, just one short of manager Paul Martin’s original pre-Christmas target.

Redbridge landed their first home points of the season at the sixth attempt with a 2-1 win over slumping Cheshunt, a result that leaves Ware four points adrift at the bottom. Visiting keeper Glenn Williamson punched

Joe Bricknell’s corner into his own net to give the Motormen a first-half lead and Glenn O’Hanlon made it 2-0 with 20 minutes left. Danny Gudgeon replied as time ran out.

All the Weekend Action

It was a game of two halves at Wroxham, where James Peagram and Clark Akers gave Waltham Abbey a well-

deserved 2-0 half-time lead. The Yachtsmen hit back strongly after the break: Ross Durrant pulled one back on 57 minutes and supplied the cross from which Remi Gordon headed the point-saver with 14 minutes to go.

Ryman South

KEEPER Darren Behcet was the star as Tooting climbed off the bottom of the table with a lone-goal victory at Walton & Hersham on Saturday.

Behcet pulled off a series of outstanding saves to defy the Swans and Lee Hall’s 50th

-minute goal lifted the Terrors all the way up to 16

th place with their fourth away win of the season.

At the other end of the table, leaders Crawley Down continued their poor run of form with a 2-1 home defeat by Hythe. Luke Blewden’s fifth-minute goal gave the Anvils hope of a return to winning ways but they were behind

by the 21st minute thanks to strikes by Craig Thompson and Ronnie Dolan, and there was no further scoring.

The Anvils stay on top, however. The winners of the match between Dulwich and Faversham would have

displaced them, but it ended in a 1-1 draw. Frankie Sawyer put Dulwich ahead in the 48th

minute as they looked to maintain their 100 per cent home record, and their prospects of doing so improved when Faversham’s James Peacock was shown a second yellow card shortly afterwards. But Jamie Maxted levelled the scores from 20 yards in the 66

th minute and that was how it finished. Faversham moved up to second, Dulwich to fourth.

Chipstead also hit back to draw despite being a man short. The vastly-experienced Rob Haworth scored his first goal for them midway through the first half at Sittingbourne, who replied through Joe Taylor in the 33

rd minute.

Chips had Craig Vernon sent off just before half-time and fell behind with eight minutes left when Ryan Golding converted a penalty. The ten men were then awarded a spot-kick of their own and Connor French took the chance to equalise with the last kick of the game.

Two second-half goals by James Cottee earned Corinthian-Casuals a 2-1 home win over Eastbourne, who had

led at half-time with a 31st-minute volley from Ben Austin.

FA Trophy

MUCH was left undecided in the 16 FA Trophy ties involving Ryman League clubs at the weekend, with seven of them requiring replays.

Nine of the games were all-Ryman affairs, but in the other seven matches the league recorded three wins, three draws and only one defeat, having held the lead at some stage of all but one of them.

Our clubs were unbeaten against Southern League opposition. Bognor were comfortable 3-0 winners at home to

struggling Bridgwater, taking charge with a penalty by Ashley Robinson and a goal by Harvey Whyte in the last few minutes of the first half. Robinson clinched it with 15 minutes left, another penalty after Whyte was fouled.

Maidstone had a more difficult-looking task at Bedford but won more easily than the 3-2 result suggests. Ex-

Bedford man Ian Draycott headed them in front just before the half-hour and they missed a number of chances before Ollie Wilkinson diverted Shaun Welford’s shot into his own net to make it 2-0 on 58 minutes. Welford needed no help when he slotted home the third with 13 minutes left. Late goals by Jamaine Ivy and, in the 90

th

minute, Michael Built caused a fright at the end.

Canvey were set for an easy victory at Uxbridge when Rob King and Jay Curran put them two up in 20 minutes.

But it was level by half-time as Danny Julienne and Chris Moore, with a penalty, hit back for the hosts, and Moore put them in front in the 65

th minute. The islanders salvaged a Tuesday replay when King netted his second 11

minutes from time to make it a 3-3 draw.

Wingate also let a two-goal lead slip and must travel to Hitchin for a replay tomorrow (Monday). Ryan Gardiner

pounced on a sloppy back-pass to give Wingate the lead on the half-hour and it was 2-0 almost at once when Anderson Pinto netted. John Frendo reduced the arrears before half-time and made it 2-2 with a 78

th-minute

penalty.

Two goals by Andre McCollin saw Kingstonian through to the third qualifying round of the FA Trophy with a 2-1

home win over Burnham in one of Sunday’s two ties. McCollin put K's 2-0 up in the first half and missed several chances to complete a hat-trick. He was not the only culprit.

Burnham, who pulled one back just before half-time through Josh Webb, had their chances as well but could not punish K's for their wastefulness.

Sunday's other tie was a 0-0 draw between Cray and Arlesey at Hayes. The sides try again at Arlesey on

Tuesday, an unwelcome distraction for the Southern League side in the run-up to their FA Cup visit to Coventry on Saturday.

It was a Saturday to forget for Carshalton after Ola Sogbanmu gave them a ninth-minute lead at Northern

Premier League side King’s Lynn. Steve Spriggs quickly equalised and then put the Linnets ahead with a penalty after an offence for which Pelayo Gomez Pico was sent off. The hosts ran away with it in the second half. Danny Beaumont, Spriggs, with his own third goal, and Russell Dunkley made it five by the 62

nd minute and a late 20-

yarder from Jason Turner completed a 6-1 rout.

Three Bridges, struggling in Ryman South, beat Premier leaders Hampton in a midweek League Cup tie and

they almost frustrated them again. This time with home advantage, Hampton were held at bay for 87 minutes before Charlie Moone’s shot was parried and Malvin Kamara pounced on the loose ball to see the Beavers through.

Wealdstone, semi-finalists last season, are on the march again. They were three goals up in nine minutes and, despite a hiccup before half-time, romped to a 6-2 victory at Merstham. An own goal by David Graves was

quickly followed by strikes from Peter Dean and Richard Jolly to leave the Ryman South club reeling. Dean struck again on 20 minutes as it threatened to become a massacre, but the hosts rallied before the interval, halving the gap through Mark Nwokeji and Fabio Saraiva. It stayed that way until the last ten minutes, when Alex Dyer and Tom Pett made sure.

Alex Read was the afternoon’s most frustrated man after putting Brentwood ahead three times against Lewes,

who replied each time to earn a 3-3 draw and a replay at the Dripping Pan on Tuesday.

Read opened the scoring on 25 minutes and Karl Beckford replied before the interval with a penalty which even Lewes thought was harsh. Read’s second goal, on 55 minutes, was answered ten minutes later by Ben Godfrey. This time it took just a minute for Read to put Brentwood ahead again, and they stayed in front for seven minutes before Chris Breach earned his side their second chance.

The eagerly-awaited derby at East Thurrock was something of a damp squib. Sam Higgins headed Rocks into the lead against Thurrock on the half-hour and Charlie Stimson replied, also with his head, in the 68

th minute. It

finished 1-1 and they will try again at Thurrock’s Ship Lane base on Tuesday.

Grays, second in Ryman North, will have home advantage when they meet Whitehawk, third in the Premier, in

an intriguing replay on Tuesday. Hawks realised they had a task on their hands when Andy Pearson had to clear two shots off their line in the first 15 minutes. Jed Wallace put Hawks ahead midway through the second half but inexperienced substitute Dan Fry soon headed home a free-kick to make it 1-1.

Jonte Smith nabbed the 16th

goal of his short stay with Met Police to earn them a 1-1 draw at Leiston. It came

three minutes before half-time, wiping out Danny Thrower’s 12th

-minute effort for the hosts. Plenty of chances followed at each end but none were taken. The replay is one Wednesday and the Met, who face Crawley in the FA Cup on Saturday, could well have done without it.

Ramsgate had a long journey to Soham but made it an enjoyable return home with a 2-1 victory. Warren Schulz

gave the visitors an early lead which was wiped out by Rob Mason six minutes before half-time. Schulz restored his side’s advantage with a penalty before the break, however, and that was enough. Soham had Matt Robinson sent off towards the end.

Leatherhead edged out Ryman South rivals Whitstable with a 1-0 victory in Kent. Sam Blackman got the

decisive goal in the 74th

minute.

Concord were soon in trouble in their all-Premier tie at home to Enfield Town. Billy Coyne was sent off for

handling Liam Hope’s header on the line in the 13th minute and Hope converted the penalty. The ten men then

held out until the 79th minute, when Joe O’Brien made it 2-0.
