Rowing NSW Small Boats Regatta
On the first weekend in February a
small contingent of NUBC athletes
travelled to SIRC to compete in the
annual Small Boats regatta. Up against
Olympic medalist Kim Crow, Jessica
Richardson came 8th in the women’s
elite single scull and joined by Eleanor
Marshall from Sydney Rowing Club,
finished 4th in the women’s elite
double scull. Following Jess and
Eleanor, Bethany Kapira and Laura
Cowderoy finished 5th in the women’s
elite double scull. In an awesome race,
closely following Sydney Rowing Club
Rivals by ten seconds, Jack Hanley and
Chris Maytom placed third in the
men’s elite lightweight double scull.
Endeavour Rowing Club Regatta
The following weekend we competed
in our neighbouring club’s home
regatta at Berry Park. We raked up
numerous wins including first place in
the mix quad with Kevin Shaw-Taylor,
Georgina Shafren, Emily Wade and
Conrad
Bond, in the men’s C grade pair with James
Elliott and Damon Mills, and in the
women’s C grade four with Bronwyn
Flowers, Maddy Dupont, Caroline
Geoghegan and Erin Gardiner.
Our D grade men, Ken Boldery and
Thomas Marshall braved their singles and
scored third and first respectively. Great
rows were had by Matt Rimington,
Anthony Mujic, James Elliott and Damon
Mills, placing 1st in the men’s C grade
coxed four and by Conrad Bond in the
men’s B grade single where he finished
second. In a close race between two
University of Newcastle crews, we
finished 1st and 2nd in the mixed eights,
smashing Port Macquarie. Our winning
crew included Jess Mitchell, Rachel Evans,
Ro Maxwell, Erin Gardiner, Anthony Mujic,
Jason Nissen, Damon Mills and James
Elliott. Anthony Mujic then went on to
place third in the men’s open single, while
Kevin Shaw-Taylor and Ken Boldery, and
Matt Rimington and Tom Marshall fought
it out in the men’s D grade double, placing
second and first respectively. Silvers were
taken out in two separate divisions of the
women’s D four by Pru Garrett-Jones,
Georgina Shafren, Maddy Dupont and Erin
Gardiner, and Emily Wade, Jess Mitchell,
Rachel Evans and Penny Saltis.
Second places were also scored by
Bronwyn Flowers and Ro Maxwell in
the women’s B grade double and by
Jason Nissen in the men’s masters’
single scull. NUBC then finished the day
on a set of wins by our men’s D grade
four with Matt Rimington, Ken Boldery,
Damon Mills and James Elliott, our
men’s open quad with Conrad Bond,
Felix Dieu, Chris Maytom and Jack
Hanley, our women’s C grade pair with
Bronwyn Flowers and Ro Maxwell, and
our mix double of Aimee Peterson and
Lucas McBeath, of Newcastle Rowing
Club. Congratulations to all our
members who competed so
successfully over this long day.
NSW Championships
Over three days of tough competition,
six of our most competitive members
competed in the state championships
from the 15th to the 17th of February.
Jessica Richardson made it to the final
of the championship women’s under
23 single scull, placing eighth. In a
composite crew with friendly rivals,
Merran Holmes took out fourth place
in the championship women’s elite
lightweight quad scull, and in a great
finish to the weekend brothers Conrad
and Austin Bond were joined by Jack
Hanley and Chris Maytom in the
championship men’s elite lightweight
quad to take out fourth place.
Sydney Rowing Club Regatta
In what would turn out to be a weekend
the club would rather forget, Jack Hanley
and Jess Richardson competed in the
Sydney Rowing Club Regatta. Jess placed
third in the women’s under 23 double
scull with Eleanor Marshall from Sydney
and Jack 4th in the men’s lightweight
single. The club suffered from a trailer
accident on the freeway on the way to
Sydney which is still being resolved so if
you owe any money to the club make
sure you pay up as soon as possible as it
may well be needed.
Newcastle Grammar Regatta
NUBC cleaned up at the local Grammar
schools regatta held at Berry Park on
the 9th of February. The club earned
eight wins including taking home gold
and a $250 cheque in the men’s open
eight feature race. Congratulations go to
Conrad Bond, Thomas Marshall, Jason
Nissen, Anthony Mujic, Damon Mills,
James Elliott, Chris Maytom, Jack
Hanley and cox Bronwyn Flowers for
their amazing efforts in this feature
race.
Gold’s continued
coming in through the day with Matt
Rimington, Thomas Marshall, Damon
Mills and James Elliott taking first in the
men’s C grade coxed four, Merran
Holmes scoring first in the women’s B
grade single, and Conrad Bond also
taking out first in the men’s B grade
single. Georgina Shafren, Ro Maxwell,
Jess Mitchell and Emily Wade placed
first in the women’s D grade quad and
then backing up in the women’s D grade
four Georgina, Jess and Emily were
joined by Rachel Evans and cox Rachel
Kirby-Faust to take out first once
again. Our men’s open quad of
Conrad Bond, Felix Dieu, Chris
Maytom and Jack Hanley also took
out gold and were joined in their
celebrations by Aimee Peterson and
Lucas McBeath who won the mixed
double.
Other stand out performances were
had by our mixed quad of Emily
Wade, Matt Rimington, Ken Boldery
and Erin Gardiner who placed
second, along with Merran Holmes
taking silver the women’s open
single. Silvers were also seen by
Bronwyn Flowers, Ro Maxwell,
Maddy Dupont and Erin Gardiner in
the women’s C grade quad and by our
women’s open eight which included
Ro Maxwell, Maddy Dupont, Erin
Gardiner, Penny Saltis, Rachel Evans,
Jess Mitchell, Merran Holmes and
Jessica Richardson with cox Austin
Bond. Matt Rimington and Thomas
Marshall placed second in the men’s
D grade double and Conrad Bond
placed third in the men’s open single.
Ken Boldery then joined Conrad in
the men’s C grade double to score
third place. Such a great day of racing.
Sydney International Rowing Regatta This year’s National Championships were quite possibly the most exciting and successful for NUBC to date where the club took home both a silver and gold medal and where all the athletes could come back proud of their achievements over the week, especially when at times they were racing and beating world champions. Merran Holmes was unfortunately eliminated in her repercharge but had some great rows in the women’s open lightweight single scull. In a battle between our two men’s under 23 lightweight single scullers Chris Maytom and Conrad Bond unfortunately both missed out on finals but showed great determination and performance at the International Regatta. Conrad Bond was then joined by Oliver Couch from UNSW to compete in the men’s under 23 lightweight double final where they placed an exciting 6th and really showed great potential together. Conrad’s younger brother Austin Bond made it to the B final of the men’s under 21 lightweight single and finished in a strong fourth. After suffering illness early in the week Jack Hanley was forced to scratch his single scull in order to focus on his crew boat later in the week. This turned out to be the best decision he could have made when his men’s open lightweight quad scull came across the line in a close second, scoring a silver medal which he was sadly deprived of in the previous year. Jack and his crew mates James Waldersee (Balmain RC), Joseph Gubler (Canberra RC) and Will Clark (Mosman RC) were a close second behind the Sydney Rowing Club Quad who were to go on to compete in the Penrith Cup at the Interstate Regatta held the in conjunction with the National championships. The race was broadcast across the nation and it was so great to see the crew finally scoring that silver medal.
Not to be out done by Mr Hanley, Jessica Richardson also put in a competitive week of racing placing 4th in the B final of the women’s under 23 single scull. Jess was also invited to join Sydney University and UTS in the women’s under 23 eight where the girls beat all expectations and in a close hard race finished fourth. Jess jumped into three seat right before the race and after not having rowed bow side all season it was an interesting warm up but the crew changes meant major improvements were seen between the heat and final and the race was also covered on Fox Sports. One hour after the finish of the eight race Jess was back on the water and paddling up to the start of the women’s under 23 quad scull. Although there wasn’t time to rest between races the adrenalin and will to win pumping through her and her crew mates Alexa Hearn (UTS), Alex French (UQ) and Elise Andrews (UTS) pushed the girls into a convincing victory and brought home a Gold for NUBC. Congratulations to all the athletes that competed at the National Championships we are so proud to have you representing our club!!!
