Snowbirds outscore scrappy Onawayin finals for second year in a row
Leach of Onaway captures fourthplace in state finals at Auburn Hills
By Mike Dunn
ROGERS CITY There was
a storm raging outside the
Rogers City gym on Friday
night and a storm of another
kind brewing on the Hurons
gym floor. The St. Mary
Snowbirds of coach Kevin
Foster stormed the nets in
the Class D district champi-
onship game and secured an
impressive 75-39 victory over
the scrappy Onaway girls of
coach Marty Mix.
The Snowbirds pushed
their record to 21-1 and
advanced to the regionalsemifinals at Pellston on
Tuesday, March 6, against
Mackinaw City. It is the sec-
ond year in a row that St.
Mary defeated Onaway in the
district championship game.
Savvy senior wing Karli
Jacob and sophomore sharp-
shooter Kari Borowiak both
connected for 15 points to
pace a balanced Snowbird
scoring ledger on this night.
Chrissy Smith also fueled the
assault on the iron with 13
points of production and
long-armed Mary Spyhalskispanked the twine for nine
points.
Molly Cleaver made the
twine spin to the tune of 14
points to lead the young
Cardinals, who finished with
a solid 13-9 mark.
St. Mary reached the
regional championship game
at Pellston last year before
losing narrowly to talented
U.P. foe Brimley, 51-46. The
Snowbirds could face
Brimley again in the finals
this year.
St. Mary and MackinawCity squared off on Tuesday
after this issue went to press.
On the other side, Brimley
faced Posen in what was
expected to be a whale of a
game. The regional finals are
slated for Thursday, March 8,
in Pellston at 7 p.m.
The quarterfinals will be
held at Sault Ste. Marie on
Tuesday, March 13.

JOHANNESBURG -- The
Johannesburg-Lewiston girls
came just short in their
attempt to wrest a districtchampionship trophy for the
sixth straight year. The
Cardinals fell to talented
Tawas Area by a 50-45 margin
on Saturday at Oscoda. They
end their season with an
excellent 20-3 mark. Tawas
moved on to face powerful
McBain in the opening round
of the Class C regional tour-
nament at Inland Lakes.
J-L had the hot hand early
against Tawas, surging to a
15-10 first-quarter lead. TheBraves rallied, though, to
assume a 23-22 lead at half-
time and the game went back
and forth the rest of the way.
Tawas finally away in the
final 90 seconds by hitting
free throws.
Johannesburg-Lewiston
junior Abby Schlicher, a
three-year varsity starter for
coach Heather Huff, capped
a brilliant season with anoth-
er stellar showing. "Acetylene
Abby" torched the nets for ateam-high 11 points and very
nearly generated a triple-
double.
She also brought down
nine rebounds against the
Braves and she was a rejec-
tion machine on defense,
recording a whopping 10
blocks. She also dished off
four assists.
Katelyn Weaver waxed the
nets for 10 points and had a
double-double with 12
boards and she, like Abby, also was big into rejection,
notching five blocks. Hannah
Huff hammered the nets for
eight points and had a pro-
ductive night down low,
gathering nine rebounds,
and mercury-quick guard
Miranda House made the
twine twitch to the tune of
eight points to go with four
steals and four assists.

points to lead Tawas and
Abby Gentges garnered 18points.
ON THURSDAY, March 1,
J-L secured a workmanlike
50-32 victory over host

TRAVERSE CITY -- Thesurging Petoskey girls ofcoach Adam Dobrowolskihave come full circle from adreadful 1-8 start to the sea-son, capturing a Class A dis-trict championship on Fridayand accomplishing a featthat would have beenunthinkable back inDecember and January.
The peaking Northmenpushed their record to 14-9
while winning all three dis-trict games last week againstT.C. West, Gaylord and
Central. They advanced tothe regional semifinalsagainst high-powered, No. 1ranked Grand Haven (22-1)on Tuesday, March 6, atRockford (in a game playedafter this issue went to press).

Crittenden, who plays
defense with the demeanorof a hungry predator that has
the scent of dinner in its nos-trils, was assigned the chal-lenge of guarding Central's1,000-point scorer KatieKnudsen. The sweet-shoot-ing Knudsen, who had scored34 points in leading Centralpast Marquette in the semifi-nals, was held to 16 pointsand scored nearly all of herpoints at the charity stripe, connecting just twice fromthe floor.
Petoskey built an early leadand maintained it throughthe first three quarters, though Central was puttingthe squeeze on. The Trojans
did pull within a basket, 34-32, near the midway mark ofthe fourth quarter butPetoskey closed out strong tosecure the well-deserved
win. Alyssa VanWerden and
Ance hit clutch buckets tohelp the Northmen pull awayagain after Central got closein the final period.
When Central pulled closeagain late in the game it wasCrittenden who finally sealedthe deal with a pair of timelyfree throws.

In Div. 2, Gaylord senior
Eric Mason (189) captured
eighth place and senior
D.J. Burden of Mio (130)
did the same in Div. 4.
Other grapplers who
earned a berth at state this year included sophomore
Jeff Myers (189) and senior
Ryan Wrecker Randall
(215) of Grayling and jun-
ior Josh McDill (285) of
Cheboygan in Div. 3 along
with Onaway senior Bryer
McGinn (171) and senior
Tyler Aldrich (152) and
sophomore Keegan
Richardson (285) of
Mancelona.
Leach completes his
notable prep mat career
with a 50-8 record in his
senior season. He posted a
3-2 record in the statemeet. After losing to Sam
Mehan of Sand Creek in
the quarterfinals, Leach
faced Cody Symons of New
Lothrup and pounded out
an 8-1 decision to advance
to the third-place finals
against Jarret Wolford of
Reading. Leach battled the
highly regarded Wolford
tooth and nail from start to
finish but lost a narrow
decision to finish in fourth
place.
Handrich posted a solid
4-2 record at state to com-
plete his outstanding jun-
ior campaign for theVikings with a 45-5 record.
After losing his second-
round match to Isaac
Jensen of Allendale by
close decision, Handrich
had to battle back through
the consolation bracket to
secure his fifth-place fin-
ish.
He ended up facing
Jensen again in the fifth-
place finals and reversed
his earlier loss impressive-
ly, claiming a 13-6 deci-
sion.
Zach Mack of Mio
trucked through the 125-
pound class over the week-
end, going 3-2 to finish
with a solid 43-8 record
this season. After losing his
second-round match by a
razor-thin 7-6 margin to
J.D. Waters of Hudson,
Mack muscled his way toback-to-back victories over
Zach Francis of Lutheran
Westland and Ryan Smit of
Decatur to earn his berth
in the fourth-place finals
where he lost to powerful
Zach Glasco of Byron.
Fullerton of Onaway bat-
tled back after losing his
opening-round match of
the day to Kyle Miller of
Lawton, winning four of
his next five matches.
Fullerton concluded his
senior season with an out-
standing 52-10 record and
he leaves the Onaway pro-gram as the only wrestler
in school history to qualify
for state all four years.
In the final match of his
prep career, the fiery
Fullerton defeated Carter
Augustyn of Grandville
Calvin Christian by a 5-2
decision to capture fifth
place.
In the Div. 2 competi-
tion, Mason needed a vic-
tory over Ryan Casey of
Niles to assure himself of a
top-eight finish and All-
State honors. Concrete
Eric came through, pow-
ering his way to a narrow 5-4 decision over the rugged
Casey.
In the seventh-place
finals, Mason engaged in a
mat war with Brandin
Schultes of Warren Woods
Tower. The bout went into
overtime before Schultes
managed to pull out the
decision.
Burden of Mio faced his
blood match with Luke
Ragon of Dansville and
brought down his foe in
the second period. Burden
concluded his senior sea-
son with a 27-9 record and
a repeat berth at state.

PETOSKEY -- The season
came to an end for the game
Gaylord girls of coach Frank
Hamilla on Wednesday. The
young Blue Devils, with only
one senior on their roster,
finished a rebuilding season
with a solid 10-11 mark after
a 51-32 loss at Petoskey in the
Class A district semifinals at
Petoskey.
Petoskey, which had been
on a tear since the midway
point of the season, won for
the 12th time in 13 games
and went on to win at T.C.
Central on Sunday to capture
the district championship.
Gaylord looks toward what
appears to be a very bright
future. Though the team will
miss the grit and gameness of
departing senior Allie
Gooding, everyone else on
the roster is returning next
year and the Blue Devil JV
squad of Shelly Curtis fared
very well this season and has
several quality young players
climbing through the ranks.
Weve got a building
block," Hamilla said and the
Blue Devils must strive to use
it as a foundation for good
things.
Junior point guard Sarah
Polena pounded the nets for
10 points to pace Gaylord in
the loss at Petoskey and jun-
ior forward Alex Simmons
struck for eight points.
Gaylord's lethal left, junior
wing Mackenzie Edwards,
drew Petoskey defenders like
magnets during the game
and was held to six points.
Mac sitll had an outstanding
season, lighting it up for 15.5
points per game.
Junior Kelsey Ance con-
nected for 20 points to pace
Petoskey. Katelyn Crittenden
crafted a 12-point perform-
ance on offense and was
dogged on defense, as usual,
and 6-foot-3 junior Megan
Tompkins stuffed the iron for
10 points and employed her
height as an intimidating
force.

MACKINAW CITY The
Mackinaw City girls of coach
Adam Stefanski thrilled the
home crowd Friday with a
sensational come-from-
behind victory over Pellston
in the Class D district finals.
The Comets rallied from a
51-45 deficit to defeat the
Hornets 62-53 and win the
second district title in school
history.
The Comets improved to
14-8 and advanced to the
regional tournament at
Pellston where they faced
powerful Gaylord St. Mary
(21-1) on Tuesday. The last
time they appeared in the
regional tournament was
1999.
Mack City eighth-grader

happen, connecting on back-
to-back buckets to tie the
score at 51 with four minutes
to go, and senior Sarah
Rogala drained a pair of free
throws 30 seconds later to
give the Comets a lead they
would not relinquish.
Courtney Wallis, who has
been a crunch time player all
year for coach Stefanski,
went a perfect 4-for-4 from
the stripe in the final minute
to help secure the tense vic-
tory in the loud, packed-out
gymnasium.
Wallis waxed the nets for
18 points to pace the Comets.

13 oints and Hailee Paquet
and Kiara Zynewicz both
zoned in for nine points in
the biggest win of the year.

struck for 16 points to pace
Pellston, which finished with
a 4-18 mark but was playing
its best basketball of the sea-
son in the final weeks of the
campaign. Dana Zulski also
put some "zap" into the
Hornet offense, hitting for 13
points to go with six steals
and four assists, and angular
Emma Dunham delivered 12

Does YourInsurance Policy
Cover Roof Damage
Compliments ofEd Wohlfiel
The easiest way to know what'scovered or what's not, is to contact
your insurance provider. Coveragewill often depend on the age of yourroof, the area you live in, and manyother factors, so it's important toknow the specifics of your policy.
Most homeowner insurance poli-cies will provide coverage for roofdamage caused by unpreventablereasons such as vandalism or fire.Disastrous "acts of God" such as hur-ricanes and tornadoes are also usual-ly covered. Although wind, rain, andhail are covered by your home insur-ance policy, there are many factorsthat determine if your damage will be
covered, and if so, how much you willbe reimbursed. The same basics thatapply to your roof, may apply to yourexterior property as well. Exteriorproperty is considered anything thatis attached to the outside structure of
your home, such as siding and gut-ters.
Although wind, rain, and hail maybe covered by your home insurancepolicy, there are many factors thatdetermine if your damage will be cov-ered, and if so, how much you will bereimbursed.
Some policies take the age of yourroof into account at the time it isdamaged. For example, if your roof isunder 10 years old, you may be cov-ered for the full cost of repairing orreplacing the damaged section of
your roof at the time of the claim. Ifyour roof is over 10 years old, you mayonly be reimbursed for the depreciat-ed value of the damaged roof. Thedepreciated value takes the aging and
wearing of your roof into account, meaning its value has decreased prior
to any damage occurring. Dependingon where you live, some policies willonly offer roof damage coverage up tothe depreciated value, regardless ofthe age of your roof. Other policies
will cover the full cost of repairing orreplacing the damaged section of
your roof at the time of the claim, regardless of the age of your roof. Inmost cases, your insurance company
will send an inspector to your hometo investigate and verify your claim. Ifthe damage is determined to be fromaging, wear and tear, or poor condi-tion of your roof, it will typically beconsidered normal maintenance, and
will not be covered under your policy. In some instances, water damage
due to flooding or surface water, might have to be covered under anadditional policy. Mold caused bycontinued water damage or leaking, for example, also may not be coveredby your insurance policy. Preventingleaks and inspecting your propertyare crucial responsibilities of thehomeowner and could help avoid
unnecessary damage. If you are expe-riencing leaking due to a damagedroof, promptly remove any furnitureor other belongings that could sus-tain water damage.
Replacing a roof or other exteriorproperty can be a time consumingand expensive process. That's why it'simportant to take certain steps to pre-vent damage from occurring.
Get your roof inspected by atrained professional who can identifyareas that may need immediaterepair. Replace broken and wornshingles. Consider using impact-resistant shingles, which may bemore expensive at first, but aredesigned to resist damage from hail, saving you money in the long run.Remove any dead trees from around
your property that could potentiallyfall onto your home.
To ease the experience of theclaims process and to help youreceive proper settlement for yourloss, take a set of before photos of
your roof and exterior property.Update the photos whenever youhave maintenance or repairs done.
After damage occurs, take a set ofafter photos. Document and recordthe damage as well as any estimates, invoices and bills you receive. Havingall of this information on file will helpensure a smooth and hassle-freeclaims process.
Overall, it's important to remem-ber that all insurance companiescover roof and exterior property dam-age differently. Even the same com-pany can vary coverage drastically bystate or the age of your roof or prop-erty. Policies also differ in coveragelimits, deductibles and certain exclu-sions. The only way to be certain of
what your policy covers, is to speak with your insurance provider aboutthe details.
