Helpful TipsWhen You Are
Selling YourHome
Compliments of Ed Wohlfiel
Selling your house is a verytime consuming task; however, knowing what to focus on during
your preparation can save youtime and effort. The key to anadvantageous sale is prepara-tion. Below are some helpful tipson preparing your home, so that
you hopefully get a quick saleand a good price.
Stand in front of your house
and look at it; this is the firstglimpse of your house a visitor isgoing to see. Try and be openminded, don't look at it withgood memories, look objectivelyas a buyer will. If you can't beobjective then ask a friend orcolleague to give you an impar-tial opinion.
First impressions are impor-tant to make sure you play this to
your advantage. If you have alawn at the front of the home, make sure it is cut down, theedges are trimmed and it looksgood. Place potted flowers nearthe doors to make a feature ofthem, any weeds need to be dis-posed of, rubbish picked up,children's toys put away and anymess from animals cleaned up.Furthermore, do not forget tolook at all the walkways, walls, and patios for cracks and crum-bling. Use this as a chance to fixor replace those faults, not onlyon the exterior but the interior as
well; don't forget the roof anddrains. Just by repainting thedoor, cleaning the windows and
washing down the exterior canimprove the look of your house.
Make the rooms of your houselook more spacious and brighterby taking out clutter and makingsure the rooms are clean. Familyphotos and other personal itemsneed to be stored before thebuyer arrives, as they can be
quite distracting. One moreimportant task is to rearrangeclosets and kitchen cabinets. Besure that all your light bulbs arebright enough so that the homedoes not seem too dim.
Let the viewer enter a roomfirst, introduce them to the roombut avoid telling them what theroom may be used for; let themmake up their own mind. It isextremely important to makesure the whole property is cleanand tidy; this also means you

This has got to be one of the most fabulous horse ranches north of theKentucky border.
The set-up and setting are absolutely ideal for those who raise, show, and possess a passion for raising horses in the great Michigan north. Thebuildings, riding areas and pasturelands are all first class, meticulouslyfashioned by horse lovers to provide for the optimum care and content-ment for their animals.
Now before delving into the details regarding the grounds and out-buildings, lets take a look at the wonderful home that is situated on this 54acre slice of northern Michigan paradise.
Featuring a spacious, well designed layout encompassing approximately1,400 square feet, this ranch style home features three nicely sized bed-rooms and two full baths, including a master suite with an elegant attached
bath highlighted by tile flooring, separate soaker tub and walk-in shower.Beautiful tile flooring adorns much of this home, including the breezeway
between the home and attached two-car garage, the laundry, kitchen anddining area, and each of the full baths. Additional highlightsinclude gently vaulted ceilings in the main living area and masterbedroom, wood burning fireplace accented with a stone surroundand wood hearth found on the property, and lots and lots of cabi-net storage space in the kitchen area.
Back outside, there are two main buildings on the grounds. Thelargest is a fabulous structure that includes seven stalls, groomingarea, a spectacular 60 x 120 foot indoor arena and an attachedobservation area complete with bathroom. A second large polebarn is perfect for equipment storage, with a concrete floor andoverhead door access at each end of the building.
The grounds also includes a 60 f oot round riding pen, individualturnouts with run ins, and some of the most beautiful pasturelandin the north.
This is a truly horse lovers haven, only about six miles fromGaylord, and at a listing price of just $229,000 it is sure to be thehome of a some very happy horses, and homeowners, in the verynear future.

For over 50 years, the Redwood SteakHouse in Lewiston has offered a unique, steak house (and seafood) experienceright here in northern Lower Michigan. From the tantalizing, melt in your mouthflavors of hand carved Porterhouse, NewYork Strip and Tenderloin steaks and RoastPrime Rib of Beef, to the delicious delicacyof Lobster Tails, King Crab Legs, JumboShrimp that are steamed or hand dippedand deep fried, and tender, flakey OceanPerch, Fresh Whitefish or Icelandic Cod,the menu at the Redwood Steak House is avirtual roster of delight for northernMichigan residents and visitors to behold.
Redwood Steak House opened theirdoors back in April of 1958, and other than
two short breaks, one the result of a fireand the second during a change of owner-ship, this extremely popular dining desti-nation has been providing a tradition ofexcellence in dining and service eversince. The original 48-seat restaurant wasbuilt by Bill and Elda Butski, and pur-chased by brothers Curt and TommeeRender in 1967, who expanded the facilityto a seating capacity in the dining room to130, and added a bar area. In 1980, Rob
Chapman, who had been working for theRenders since 1969, purchased theRedwood Steak House and expanded thedining area even further to achieve a seat-ing capacity of 150.
Today, the Redwood Steak House offersnot only a first class dining experience;they also feature live entertainment orKaraoke on Friday and Saturday evenings.Regular performers include local musicalfavorites Sneaky Peat, Key West ComedyMagician, Frank Everhart, and MichiganMan Mike Ridley also performs at theRedwood Steak House on a regular basis.

Something we have just added is ourChefs Pasta Corner, which includes ourfresh salad bar, on Wednesdays, statesRob Chapman. Guests select their choice
of pasta dish, and then watch as our Chef

Another favorite specialty item at the
Redwood Steak House is The Steak Tray.
Servers bring a tray of sumptuous
Porterhouse, New York Strip o r Tenderloin
steaks for guest to select from, or they can
have a steak cut to order.
For over half a century, the staff at the
Redwood Steak House has been dedicated
to the highest of standards. Freshness is
always a top priority, and they prepare
their own dressings, soups and sauces
from scratch, and even bake their own
bread, corn muffins, biscuits and more on
a daily basis for their guests.
I encourage people to take a beautiful
drive to Lewiston and visit us, states Rob
Chapman. At the Redwood Steak House, they can select their own steak, or perhaps
enjoy some great seafood, and know that

have to spend time cleaning items such asthe cooker and refrigerator. Switch off appli-ances, particularly if they make a noise
when they are running; there is nothingmore disturbing than a constant buzzingsound when you are trying to imagine livingin a new home. A few fresh flowers in a nicevase or some potpourri is a great way tolight up a room and make it smell fresh as
well. Rather than have items left on kitchentops, put them away in a cupboard, espe-cially those that are not used often. You
want to show the buyer howpretty and big the kitchen isso they can imagine them-selves cooking in there.
Don't forget about the windows, not only do you
want to make sure they are not dirty, butyou also have to make sure they are in good working condition with no damage in theglass. You should pay special attention tothe bathroom; make sure that it is not dirty, replace the toilet seat and shower curtain, and put out fresh towels every day. It mayalso be a good idea to give your home a newcoat of paint in a neutral color. And don'tforget the basic truth - not only luxuryhomes can have luxurious appearance.

Health & Wellness
Two Michigan health care leaders were
honored Sunday evening with the 2011 MHA
Health Care Leadership Award, presented by
the Michigan Health & Hospital Association(MHA) during the MHA Health Foundation
Governance Leadership Forum in Plymouth.
Winners of the award included David T.
Buzzelli, retired Dow Chemical Companyexecutive and chair of the Board of Directors
at Northern Michigan Regional Health
System, Petoskey; and Kathleen Griffiths, president and chief executive officer (CEO) of
Chelsea Community Hospital.
David Buzzelli joined the board of trustees
of Northern Michigan Regional HealthSystem in 2007 and was elected its chair in
2010 during a time of considerable challenge.
The health systems CEO had unexpectedly
passed away in late 2009; negotiations were
under way to pursue affiliation with a largerhealth system; the pressure of uncompensat-
ed care was taking a toll; and several health
care services that Northern Michigan had
long offered to residents in the 22-countyregion were forced to close.
Buzzelli provided the organization with the
clear direction and focus the organizationneeded. By creating an open forum for
expressing varying perspectives, keeping the
board informed, and providing access to
resources, he strategically led the board tobecome a more cohesive group through its
ability to make confident, informed deci-
sions.
Under Buzzellis guidance, Northern
Michigan Regional Health System hasreceived a number of quality and service
awards, including achieving Magnet recogni-
tion from the American Nurses Credentialing
Center and attaining EnvironmentalLeadership Circle status for the third consec-
utive year from Practice Greenhealth, the
national membership group for health careorganizations that have made a commitment
to sustainable, environmentally preferable
practices.
Buzzelli is a leader, an innovator and avisionary, often proposing new ways to look
at issues. He also encourages others to lead,
creating the Futures Committee to help the
governing board respond to change in ways
that will determine the systems positive
future and implementing education require-
ments for trustees to arm them with knowl-
edge for making confident decisions.
Based in Lansing, the MHA represents all of
Michigans community hospitals and suc-
cessfully advocates on behalf of hospitals and
the patients they serve. The MHA addresses
key issues in the legislative and regulatory
arenas to advance initiatives that protect
quality, cost-effective and accessible care. To

Gaylord Otsego Memorial Hospital
(OMH) is taking multiple steps to improve
patient safety at the point-of-care. OMH has
been selected as one of 39 hospitals in twenty
states to receive grant funding from the
Cardinal Health Foundation to help U.S. hos-
pitals, health systems, and community health
organizations improve medication and oper-
ating room safety and efficiency. At the same
time OMH received news it was selected as aCardinal Health Foundation grant recipient,
the hospital joined the Institute for
Healthcare Improvements Project JOINTS
initiative, a federally-funded program
designed to speed adoption of proven meth-
ods to prevent surgical site infections (SSIs)
after hip and knee replacement surgery.
Michigan is one of five states participating in
the first stage of this three-year project;
Project JOINTS stands for Joining
Organizations IN Tackling SSI.
The Cardinal Health E3 Grant Program
awarded Otsego Memorial Hospital $37,000
to fund Patient Safety In the Operating
Room Using Surgical Checklists through
Otsego Memorial Hospitals patient educa-
tion program Joint Ventures: Making theConnection Between Your Physician, Your
Hospital and You. The goal of this program is
to increase patient education, and ultimately
reduce surgical site infections and enhance
effectiveness and efficiency.
This grant offers us the opportunity to
enhance our efforts in preventing surgical site
infections (SSI) for our total joint replace-
ment patients, said Kathy Respecki, RN,
CAPA, Surgical Services Manager at Otsego
Memorial Hospital. For example, we have
been able to add interventions to help reduce
the risk of staph infections, such as pre-oper-
ative home skin preparation soap and pre-
operative povidone iodine nasal antiseptic, at
no charge to our patients, through this grant.
As part of the Cardinal Health E3 Grant, total joint replacement patients each receive
a reusable OMH logo tote bag filled with edu-
cational materials, Cholorhexidine Gulconate
(CHG) antiseptic skin prep for home bathing
use and a Clorox hand hygiene product at no
cost to help reduce risk of surgical site and
staph infections. Included in the educational
materials is a patient pre-op checklist con-
taining information and instruction regard-
ing skin prep before surgery.
In order to increase patient safety, and the
reduction of SSIs, weve implemented check-
lists both for the patient and for our staff here
at the hospital, continued Respecki. These
checklists are part of evidence based practice
methods we have chosen to use to ensure the
highest quality of care and safety for ourpatients. Items on the checklist include
completion of skin preparation and applica-
tion of nasal antiseptic.
Julie OBrien, Performance Improvement
Coordinator at OMH, is credited with being
one of the champions of the Cardinal Health
Foundation grant. OBrien, a former surgical
services department staff member, spent over
170 hours researching and writing the grant
proposal as well as administering the grant
funding after it was received.
The educational materials and preventa-
tive measures that patients receive as part of
the Cardinal Health E3 Grant and Joint
Ventures program made Otsego Memorial
Hospital an excellent candidate to work with
the Institute for Health Improvements (IHI)Project JOINTS Initiative. Launched in April
of 2011, Project JOINTS is focusing on hip and
knee replacement surgery because infections
following these procedures can be cata-
strophic for the patient and those caring for
them.
The timing couldnt have
been more perfect, said
Sandy Oltersdorf, RN, MSN,
CNOR. We had already sub-
mitted our grant application
when we heard about Project
JOINTS, and we are excited
and proud to be a part of
such an initiative.
Healthcare facilities, like
Otsego Memorial Hospital,
that choose to participate inProject JOINTS commit to
implementing the IHI
Enhanced Surgical Site
Infections Prevention
Bundle, a set of five evi-
dence-based practices
designed to prevent SSIs in patients undergo-
ing hip and knee replacement surgery; evi-
dence-based practices OMH already partici-
pates in as part of through the aforemen-
tioned grant funded program.
Reducing surgical site infections and
increasing patient safety is a collaborative
effort, commented Respecki. Our Surgical
Team and our patients work together to
ensure everyone is aware of their role in pre-venting SSIs throughout the surgical
process.

Memorial Hospital, please visit the hospitals

The fountain of youth is an alkaline body. An alkaline body
is a body free from lifestyle diseases, and chemically bal-anced. The opposite of an alkaline body is an acidic body. An
acidic body is said to have the medical condition called
Acidosis.
Acidosis is a condition in which body chemistry becomes
imbalanced and overly acidic.
Symptoms with Acidosis include: frequent sighing, insom-
nia, water retention, recessed eyes, rheumatoid arthritis,
migraine head aches, abnormally low blood pressure, dry
hard stools, foul smelling stools accompanied by a burning
sensation in the anus, alternating constipation and diarrhea,
difficulty swallowing, burning in the mouth or under the
tongue, sensitivity of the teeth to vinegar and acidic fruits,
bumps on the tongue or the roof of the mouth.
Some causes of Acidosis are; kidney, liver and adrenal dis-
orders, improper diet, malnutrition, obesity, ketosis, anger,
stress, fear, anorexia, toxemia, fever, excessive amounts of
aspirin and prescription drugs. Acidosis occurs when the
body loses its alkaline reserves.
Do some of the conditions described sound like the prob-
lems of people suffering from old age? They probably do
because aging is defined as an accumulation of acidic wastes
in our body.
A simple test can be done to determine if you body is too
acidic, too alkaline, or just right. Test your body often; this way
you can monitor any changes and adjust your body accord-
ingly.
This test is called your PH Test;
Purchase PH Paper, (from your health food store, the PH
color graph will come with the paper), apply saliva /or urine
to a piece of the paper .The paper will change color to indicate
if your system is acidic or alkaline. Perform the test before eat-
ing or at least on hour after eating.
The scale called PH is;
1.01 to 6.9 is considered an acidic body
7.0 is neutral
7.1 to 14.0 is alkaline
7.2 to 8.0 is the ideal alka-line level
Continue to test your PH
level for the rest of your life;
this is a good barometer to
your internal health.
Are you concerned about
your PH level? You should be, if you ha ve an acidic body.
An acidic body corrodes your body tissue, your veins and
your arteries. Your body becomes a host for numerous life
style diseases such as cardiovascular disease, cancer, and dia-betes.
To learn more about the connection to Cancer and your PH.
Visit www.cureamerica.net and refer to the book The Calcium
Factor. This marvelous book describes how calcium helps
change an acidic body to an alkaline body.
Causes of your acidosis are mainly diet. Research shows
that when your food is broken down, it leaves chemical, non
combustible ash which when combined with body fluids,
yields either acidic or alkaline potentials of PH. Certain foods
are acid forming, while others are alkali-forming. So it stands
to reason that to change your body from an acidic body to an
alkaline body you need to change your diet.
The following is a list of Alkaline Forming Foods;
Avocados Honey
Corn Maple Syrup
Dates Molasses
Fresh Coconut Raisins
Fresh Fruits (most) Soy Products
Fresh Vegetables Umeboshi Plums
The citric acid in citrus fruits has an alkalizing effect on the
system.
Low level Alkaline Forming Foods
Almonds Chestnuts
Black Strap Molasses Lima Beans
Brazil Nuts Millet
Buckwheat Soured Dairy products
The best alkaline forming drinks are:
Pineapple Juice, citric juices and Lemon water. To make
lemon water; add 1 tbsp. of lemon juice to all the water you
drink. (Drink 8 to 10 glasses of water a day)
Avoid salt, antacids, alcohol, sugar & all white foods (white
flour, white rice and white pasta, white sugar).
Holistic cleanses are always an excellent way to change
your health. Dr. J Rodrigo says;
Almost all diseases begin in the digestive track. Your intes-
tinal tract is the origin of disease and it is also the origin of
your healing. To learn more about cleansing visit www.herbs4health.net,
open the E book, 9 Steps to a Healthy Vibrant Body refer to
Step Three, Cleansing the Body. We should all cleanse our
body at least twice a year.
Don't forget after you clean your body you need to feed
your body. All acidic people need to take calcium with mag-
nesium, and a multi vitamin
with minerals. These prod-
ucts should be a liquid, plant
extract.
Believe it or not, but an
alkaline body is a disease free
body. With an alkaline body
you will look younger and
feel more energetic. You will
have a healthy vibrant body

Grayling As part of an on-going ini-
tiative to expand services throughout
the Mercy Hospital Grayling healthcare
system, Orthopedic Surgeon and
Orthopedic Oncologist Dr. Cynthia
Rubert has joined the Mercy Physician
Network Orthopedics team which con-
sists of Syed Habib, MD, Kent Kirkland,
MD and Bill Crook, PA-C. Dr. Rubert
will begin seeing patients in October at
the Mercy Community Health Center in
Prudenville.
Dr. Rubert attended medical school
and completed her Orthopedic Surgeryresidency at the Medical College of
Wisconsin, and her Orthopedic
Oncology fellowship at the Washington
Cancer Institute in Washington D.C.
Upon completion of her training she
returned to Michigan to be closer to
family. She and her husband are com-
mitted to the northern Michigan com-
munities as Dr. Rubert is from Cadillac
and her husband is from West Branch.
Dr. Rubert has been working in solo
practice for 12 years in the West Branch
community. Many of Dr. Ruberts
patients are from Roscommon and
Prudenville/Houghton Lake areas,
where Mercy has outpatient clinics, and
she attracts orthopedic oncology
patients from all over northern
Michigan. She is one of only five
Orthopedic Oncologists in the state of
Michigan.
I am extremely dedicated to my
patients, noted Dr. Rubert. My hus-
band jokes that I practically tuck them
into bed at night. A patient centered
focus is a priority f or the Mercy Hospital
Grayling healthcare system and Dr.
Ruberts devotion to achieving excel-
lence in patient care reflects this vision.
She is a phenomenal addition to our
already exceptional Orthopedics team.Dr. Rubert is able to offer new proce-
dures that will broaden our scope of
orthopedic services, providing Mercy
Hospital Grayling with a more compre-
hensive orthopedics program that is
focused on the
patient, said Mike
Zdrodowski, Chief
P r a c t i c e
Administrator.
I am very
impressed with
the other orthope-
dic providers in
the Mercy
P h y s i c i a n
Network. Their
philosophy of care and patient commit-
ment aligns with my own and I am eager
to work with them, commented Dr.
Rubert. Working within the Mercy
Physician Network affords me access to
more resources, which translates into
better care for my patients.
Dr. Rubert will see patients at Mercy
Community Health Center in
Prudenville beginning in October. Her
new location is just 18 miles away from
her current practice, so her existing
patients will not have to travel much far-ther for an appointment. I am looking
forward to working in the communities
and providing the best patient care pos-
sible. At the end of the day, exceptional
patient care is my passion.
