As a whole, your home has

a great impact on nature. You

    can make your home more

    energy-efficient to save

    money and boost its per-

    formance. Although the

    most energy-efficient meas-

ures could require a large ini-tial outlay, the investment is

worth it since it will provide

    you great savings on your

yearly utility bills in the years

    to come.

Below are a few tips on

    making your home more

    energy-efficient:

    Proper insulation on the

attic and walls make it more

    energy-efficient. Proper

    insulation slows down the

heat that flows out of your

    home in winter or summer,

thus less energy is needed to

    cool or heat your home.

    Foam insulation materials,

    cellulose and fiberglass

    reduce the heat conducted

    on the wall system when

    they are properly installed.

    Use energy-efficient mod-

els to replace your leaky and

    old windows to boost the

    efficiency of your windows.

    Consider putting up storm

    windows or weather strip-

ping. You will be able to save

from 7 to 24 percent of your

    air-conditioning and heating

    costs when you replace old

    windows.

    Planting shrubs and shade

    trees help you save more

energy. The tress could blockthe heat of the sun in sum-

    mer and the bare branches

of the trees allow heat radia-

    tion to your home during

    winter.

    Use more energy-efficient

    bulbs like the compact fluo-

    rescent lights instead of your

    old incandescent light bulbs.

    While compact lights are

    more expensive, they last

    much longer and provide

Theres something very special about a ranch home design.Perhaps its the sense of spaciousness, the ease of single level liv-

ing, or maybe the subtle, low profile architecture of a ranch that

melds seamlessly with the surrounding landscape.

This wonderful ranch home is even more special in that is it

located in the fabulous Lakes of the North community, offering

year-round resort style amenities, situated southwest of Gaylord.

The home features nearly 1,700 square feet of living space, includ-

ing three good-size bedrooms, two full baths, large open kitchen,

beautiful corner fireplace, a huge 33 x 13 family room area, large

    sunroom/breezeway, and much, much more.

The large property surrounding the home has been very nicely

landscaped, and there is a commons area behind the property

and treed golf course in front, resulting in fantastic views that

make this a very scenic spot indeed. A 20 x 12 foot Toy Garage

offers extra space for lawn and recreational gear, and the attached

two-car garage and enormous (and partially finished) basementprovides even more storage space.

An extra bonus is that this outstanding home is located in the

amazing Lakes of the North community, and homeowners will

enjoy year-round resort style amenities. Those include club-

houses, swimming pool, two lakes, a golf course, horse stables, a

restaurant, an airstrip, and the DNR snowmobile trails and cross-

country skiingall located just a short distance from the doorstep

    of this home.

The listing price for this Lakes of the North ranch home is just

$129,900. For more information or to arrange a tour of this home,

It is one of the oldest family-operated restau-rants in Michigan, and one of the most desirableof dining destinations.

Founded in 1919 by George Dumas, the SugarBowl in Gaylord was launched as a homemadecandy and ice cream shop, employing what wasa common name at that time for candy empori-ums across the United States. Soon after open-ing, Georges brother Harry joined the operationand within a few years the Sugar Bowl beganoffering sandwiches to their customers, and thenearly 100 year-old legacy of this downtownGaylord landmark began.

Today, the Sugar Bowl Restaurant is operatedby George Dumas son, Bob, managed by TonyKaly, and offers a full traditional American stylemenu featuring a variety of specialties such asdelectably tender prime rib, fresh whitefish, gourmet salads, and tantalizing homemadedesserts highlighted by red raspberry pie, cheese cakes, and Greek rice pudding andbaklava. During the weekends, a Sugar Bowlspecialty is steaks grilled over charcoal andsauts created right before the eyes of the din-ers. Expertly prepared by head chef, BobKidder, who has overseen the kitchen at the

establishment for more than 35 years, the en tic-ing menu at Sugar Bowl Restaurant draws arearesidents and visitors to northern LowerMichigan back time and time again.

The quality our food, states Bob Dumas,

and the consistency of our meals and our serv-ice bring our guests back often. We are knownacross the United States as a restaurant destina-tion here in Northern Michigan.

The ambience inside the Sugar BowlRestaurant beautifully reflects the establish-ments 93-year heritage. It is elegant yet family-friendly, with a large family dining area servingbreakfast, lunch and dinner, and a formal diningroom featuring tablecloth service duringevenings after 5:30 pm. Vintage photos line the walls, providing a fascinating glimpse of earlyGaylord and Otsego County.

The care and attentiveness of the chefs andservers in providing customers with the ultimateup-north dining experience is an ongoing hall-mark of the Sugar Bowls legacy. The entire staffis dedicated to ensuring each customers visit isan enjoyable and satisfying one.

The Sugar Bowl Restaurant is located at 216West Main Street (M-32) in downtown Gaylord,

the same place the establish-ment has been since it wasfounded back in 1919. Hoursof operation are Monday thruThursday, and Sunday from 7am until 9 pm, and Friday andSaturday from 7 am until 10pm.

Jessop, Judy Koza, Eddi Offield, Jack Perry,

and Carolyn Rader. The arts center moved

into the downtown Petoskey former United

Methodist Church in 1980. In 2002 a full ren-

ovation of the facility was completed and

annually over 30,000 people enjoy their pro-

    grams and events.

great savings because they less use energy.

If the furnace you have was built before

1992, it is likely to waste about 35 percent of

fuel and most probably at the end of its serv-

ice. Replace your old furnace with a new

highly effective system such as the condens-

ing furnace. It provides up to ninety percent

yearly efficiency. This type of furnace wastesnot more than 10 percent of natural gas and

lets you save 27 percent on your heating

    costs.

Turn your hot water system to the warm

setting to improve efficiency. Insulate the

hot water lines so they will not cool off easi-

ly. Use low-flow showers in your baths.

It would be preferable to schedule an

energy audit on your home so you can get

expert advice from energy auditors and

raters. They use special tools and skills to

evaluate your home and recommend themost cost-effective measure to enhance the

efficiency and comfort of your home.

Release trapped air by bleeding radiators.

Shut down heating and loosen the bleed

valve located at the top of the radiator care-

fully. Do not forget to use rags in catching

    drips.

Double glazing helps in cutting heat less

on your windows by half. The costs of dou-

ble-glazing vary but you can enjoy great sav-

    ings on your utility costs

    every year. A more energy-efficient

home means you can get big

    savings on your utility bills

and is a good way to do your

share in protecting the environment and

preserve nature. Remember that the lesser

carbon footprint your home leaves, the bet-

ter it will be for everyone.

Have you turned down a chance to go out with family or

friends because you were concerned about falling? Have you

cut down on a favorite activity because you might fall? If so, A

Matter of Balance: Managing Concerns About Falls is a pro-

gram for you. Fear of Falling can be just as dangerous as

falling itself. People who develop this fear often limit their

activities, which can result in severe physical weakness, mak-

ing the risk of falling even greater. Many older adults also

experience increased isolation and depression when they

limit their interactions with family and friends.

A Matter of Balance can help people improve their quality

of life and remain independent. A Matter of Balance is

designed to reduce the fear of falling and increase activity lev-

els among older adults. Participants learn to set realistic goals

to increase activity, change their environment to reduce fall

risk factors, and learn simple exercises to increase strength

    and balance.

The Crawford County Commission on Aging & Senior

Center is offering A Matter of Balance: Managing Concerns

About Falls starting Monday, November 7th through

November 30th from 9:00-11:00am at the Crawford County

Commission on Aging & Senior Center. Classes are held twice

a week, Monday and Wednesdays for 4 weeks. Please call the

Crawford County Commission on Aging & Senior Center at

989-348-7123 to register or for more information.

    October is National Breast Cancer

women living in the United States will devel-

op invasive breast cancer, early detection

and medical advances have saved the lives of

    millions of women.

The public is invited to Be Enlightened, A

    Breast Cancer Awareness Event. Guest

speakers include Dr. Mary Seger NP, PhD,

Author and Kimberly Smith a local breast

cancer survivor and an accountant at St.

Mary Cathedral Parish. The Zonta Club of

Gaylord Area will host the event from 5:30-

6:30pm at Saturn Booksellers on Thursday,

    October 27th.

This is a free event, however, guests are

    asked to RSVP through

[email protected] or by calling Cherie

To encourage home radon testing, the

Health Department of Northwest Michigan is

waiving its $15 charge for radon kits during

National Radon Action Week. Free test kits

can be picked up during regular business

hours October 17-21 at Health Department

    offices in Bellaire, Charlevoix,

    Petoskey/Harbor Springs, and Gaylord.

Please bring your Property Tax Identification

Number with you; it is needed to map radon

levels in the f our-county Health District. The World Health Organization and U.S.

    Environmental Protection Agency predict

radon gas will be the leading cause of lung

cancer for non-smokers in 2011. One in 15

American homes contains high levels of

radon. Millions of Americans are unknow-

    i n g l y

    exposed to

    this danger-

    ous gas. In

    fact, a recent

    study by

    H a r v a r d

    U n i v e r s i t y

    ranks radon

    as Americas

    #1 in-home

    hazard.

    Scott Kendzierski, Director of

Environmental Health Services, said the only

way to know if you are exposed to elevated

radon levels is to test your home.

Fortunately, testing for radon is easy and

inexpensive. And if you discover that you

have a problem, the Health Department can

provide free consultation and if needed, help

you find a contractor to correct the prob-

    lem.

    Radon is a naturally-occurring, invisible

and odorless radioactive gas. It is dispersed

in outdoor air, but can reach harmful levels

when trapped in buildings. By taking simple

steps to test your home for radon and fix if

necessary, this health hazard can be avoided.

    The Health Department of Northwest

Michigan is mandated by the Michigan

Public Health Code to promote wellness, pre-

    vent disease, provide quality healthcare,

address health problems of vulnerable popu-

lations, and protect the environment for the

residents and visitors of Antrim, Charlevoix,

    Emmet, and Otsego counties.

For additional information about radon or

    radon testing, telephone Scott Johnston,

    Environmental Health Sanitarian, at 989-
