Mad ScienceMad Science It’s the end of week fi ve and our Eagle’s Landing campers are busy making scientifi c discoveries. Kiddie Kingdom learned about air this week. They explored the age old question: What is air? We did a fun experiment to learn about this. Our fi rst and second graders have been exploring the magical properties of magnets. We fi gured out what things are attracted by magnets and what things are not. Then we used our magnet knowledge and created a magnet car that was able to race across a paper track! Ever heard of pH? Well if you need a refresher, our third and fourth graders sure can help you out. We learned all about pH this week. We tested the pH of diff erent substances and sorted them into bases and acids. We even got to mix some of them to see how bases and acids react with each other. It was loads of colorful fun. Our Mad Science electives bounced their way into class and created their very own bouncy balls! We made up some “mad” experiments for them and put our bouncy balls to the test. But that’s not all! We all know how careful you have to be with your scientifi c discoveries. You don’t want someone stealing them, so we created our very own invisible ink to write down our great scientifi c ideas. Time sure fl ies when you are having fun in Mad Science. Week fi ve sure went by fast and we can’t wait for more fun in Mad Science!

- Olga, Mad Science Coordinator

Hot Fudge and Salted Caramel Blondies

Ingredients: ½ cup unsalted butter (1 stick), melted 1 large egg 1 cup light brown sugar, packed 1 tbsp vanilla extract 1 cup all-purpose fl our Pinch of salt, optional and to taste About ⅓ cup hot fudge About ⅓ cup salted caramel sauce

Directions: 1. Preheat oven to 350° F. Line an 8-by-8-inch baking pan with aluminum foil, spray with cooking spray; set aside. 2. In a large microwave-safe bowl melt the butter, about 1 minute on high power. 3. Wait momentarily before adding the egg so you don’t scramble it. Add the egg, brown sugar, vanilla and whisk until smooth. 4. Add the fl our, optional salt and stir until just combined; don’t overmix. 5. Turn batter out into prepared pan, smoothing the top lightly with a spatula. 6. Evenly drizzle the hot fudge over the top. 7. Evenly drizzle the salted caramel over the top. 8. With the tip of a table knife, lightly swirl the hot fudge and caramel into the batter. Don’t overdo the swirling because the hot fudge spreads and widens as it bakes, and if you overdo the swirling, the surface will look blackened and messy post-baking. It’s okay to leave some fairly bare and unswirled patches. 9. Bake for about 25 to 30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center (if you can fi nd a bare patch to test) comes out mostly clean, or with a few moist crumbs, but no batter. The hot fudge and caramel will be glistening, shiny and wet-looking so make sure you’re evaluating the blondie base, not the toppings, if you do a toothpick test. Allow bars to cool in pan for at least 30 minutes before slicing and serving. Bars will keep if stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 1 week, or in the freezer for up to 6 months.

- Taylor, Baking Coordinator & Callie, Instructor

The G1B Blue Furry Trolls G1B had the best time in the world this week! Sophia Coppolino had a blast playing Candy Crush and other games in Tablets. Marluz Santiago became a Ping Pong and Nok Hockey champ while playing under the games tent. Caylee Inselberg built a huge block tower and laughed with her friends in Legoland. Gianna Calle scored a lot of points and made plenty of shots playing Basketball. Jillian Watson fi nished learning the dance for the Lower Camp Show which we’re all very excited for. On Wednesday we traveled the world with a variety of fun international activities! We had a fantastic time this week and can’t wait for the weeks to come.

- Jillian, Counselor & Sabrina, Junior Counselor

LITs & CITs Five weeks down, three to go, and we have no idea where the time went! The LITs and CITs have had a fantastic summer and we are sad that we only have three more weeks left of camp. All of the LITs and CITs truly enjoy the time they spend with their groups and specialty areas and are always trying to fi nagle a bit more time with those areas. It is a true pleasure to see the younger campers yell their names, run up for a hug or play with them at the pool. All of these gestures are a testament to the impact they are having at camp. When we are together as a group you can always guarantee a laugh and they always seem to go full force in electives, tribes and meetings. The LITs have been busy making “plarn” (plastic yarn) for our community service and by next week we should have enough to start the mat making process. Thank you for all who donated plastic bags as they are currently being turned into plarn. The CITs have been just as busy working on their Parents’ Night Out fundraiser. It is incredible to see them step up and plan the whole event from start to fi nish. Please take advantage of a night out and drop your kids off on August 1st! All funds collected from that evening will be donated to Pediatric Crohns and Colitis research. All in all, it has been a FUN-nominal camp experience and we plan on making the most of the time left.

- Christina, LIT/CIT Division Leader

Creative Dramatics This week has been an exciting one in Creative Dramatics. Through a series of fun games, we’ve been practicing one of the most important aspects of performance (and politeness): eye contact! We played “Ninja Star, Baby Kitten, Angry Chihuahua” which is a game where campers can only pass an imaginary animal or object to their neighbor while looking them in the eye. We then took what we learned one step further with “Kitty Wants a Corner” which involved making eye contact with someone across the circle in order to silently switch spots! In addition to eye contact, we’ve also been practicing character movement with the game “Lead With Diff erent Parts of the Body” where campers would pretend there was a string attached to their nose, head, stomach, etc. and walk around in a circle. Overall, this week has been extremely fun! Thanks for sending your awesome and ever-enthusiastic campers my way!

Traveling the World with Kiddie Kingdom

This week Kiddie Kingdom became world travelers without even leaving the camp! They experienced many wonders of the world like making shamrock prints with bell peppers (Ireland), playing What’s the Time, Mr. Wolf? (Australia) and they listened to beautiful music from many countries. Ask them about the many places they visited just using their feet. We walked around and saw so many smiles that the camp was full of sunshine and rainbows from all of the children. We are having so much fun with the campers each and every day. You can catch us splashing around and sliding down the Frog Slide. We love being kids again! We can be seen kicking soccer balls, shooting hoops, making a craft, rehearsing our dances and even baking some delicious desserts with the campers. Our favorite time of the week is our Division Leader time. We spend all off -season planning special weekly events for the campers to participate in with us. The past couple of weeks we have had an animal scavenger hunt, animal races, scavenger hunts trying to save the trolls and a nature hike where everyone loved looking for the trolls again. The campers, counselors and the Division Leaders had a ball. We are looking forward to the rest of the summer where we have many special things planned. We also cannot wait to see all of you at our Kiddie Kingdom Show on Week 7! Thank you for sharing your children with us!

Fantastic Fun Fantastic Fun has been FUN-TASTIC! I have the pleasure of spending time with every Kiddie Kingdom and fi rst and second grade camper each week. What makes Fantastic Fun so fantastic?
