From the PrincipalThe Season of LentThe whole school gathered in the

gymnasium this week to mark Ash

Wednesday and to reinforce the

significance of this occasion. This feast

day asks each of us to re-evaluate

our lives and to make a commitment

throughout Lent to the welfare and

service of others. The placement of

ashes on the forehead of every student

and staff member reminds us of the

wonderful capacity for transformation

that we possess. We are challenged to

dispense with selfish and destructive

behaviours and commit to a future

characterised by goodness and respect

for the other.

In the tradition of our Church, the

observance of Lent involves the practices

of prayer, fasting and almsgiving. It is a

time of both self-denial and renewed

attention to the way we relate to God and

others. For those who fully embrace this

season it has the potential to be rich in

significance and experience.

Prayer provides meaning to the actions

we undertake during Lent. It enhances

our relationship with God and allows us

to express our gratitude for the blessings

we have received from Him. During this

time let each of us pray for the welfare of

others and for the strength to faithfully

fulfil our own Lenten promises.

Throughout this season we are also

encouraged to refrain from all excesses

and to fast as a way of fostering an

empathy with those who are hungry as a

result of poverty. Our fasting is a sign of

our awareness and responsibility for the

injustice suffered by the poor. It is also

representative of our trust in God and

His providence.

Almsgiving is a natural response to our

heightened consciousness of inequality

and expresses an understanding of

the fact that the needs of all are the

responsibility of all. Typically, alms are

given to someone from whom you

would not expect to receive anything

in return. In many ways giving to others

is the ‘fruit’ of prayer and fasting and

may achieve its expression in ways

ranging from contributions to Project

Compassion to increased involvement in

service activity. Regardless of the specific

form of expression, almsgiving provides

recognition of our own privileged status

and is an act of gratitude for the many

blessings that we enjoy.

I hope that all families are able to

make the opportunity to maximise the

possibilities of this special time.

Student ServicesIn recent weeks the College has

welcomed Mrs Jennifer Giancaspro to

the role of Student Services Secretary.

Jenny fulfils a critical role for many

families in that she is often the first

point of contact with regards to student

absence, sick bay or a myriad of other

general enquiries. May I remind parents

that the earliest possible notification of

student absence is always appreciated

and this may be registered by calling

9430 2007 or preferably by emailing

[email protected]

Number through the College before they graduate or leave for employment.

Maasin, Southern Leyte

19 September – 2 October 2014

The Philippines Immersion provides a

unique opportunity for Year 10 and 11

students to travel to a remote part of

the Philippines and assist the Christian

Brothers in their mission to provide

services to the poor and marginalised.

The Philippines Immersion programme

aims to:

• witness firsthand the power of

education to make a difference in the

lives of the poor;

• show solidarity with educators, health

workers and those who are at the

margins;

• develop greater awareness in cross

cultural and inter-religious dialogue;

Philippines Immersion• form students who understand the

church’s mission in the contemporary

world context;

• experience the charism of Edmund

Rice alive in the developing world.

In addition to working with the Christian

Brothers during their time in the

Philippines, students will have many

opportunities to experience a variety of

cultural activities and time to explore the

immense natural beauty of this part of

the world.

They will travel via Singapore and Cebu

in the Philippines. The final destination

is reached by a six hour ferry crossing.

Maasin, although termed a city by

Philippines standards, is a small town on

the edge of the jungle. Most residents live

in small villages surrounding the city.

The travellers will stay in a small hotel in

the city but each day will venture out to

where the locals live and need help.

The people of Maasin are predominately

Catholic (98%) and evidence of their

belief is obvious. There are numerous

churches and shrines dotted around

the area. The people are generous and

friendly and their poverty does not

dampen their enthusiasm for everything

they do.

On the return trip through Cebu there

is also an opportunity to do some last

minute shopping at the world’s 11th

largest shopping mall.

Page 7: Week 5 term 1

CBC Fremantle Newsletter | Week 5 Term 1

The cost of this two week immersion is

$2,950. This includes all transportation,

accommodation, insurance and most

meals. It is suggested that students may

want to allocate up to $500 for incidental

expenses.

An information evening for families will be

held on Tuesday 11 March at 7.00pm in

the Arts Learning Area at CBC Fremantle

(entry off High Street) and at this time

‘Expression of Interest’ forms will be

available.

Numbers are limited to a maximum of 10

students. Participation in this Immersion

is by invitation and students will need to

meet eligibility requirements. Applicants

will be interviewed by the Director of

Religious Education and Identity, Mr Craig

Dowsett, to help assess their readiness

and suitability for the experience

which may at times be challenging and

confronting.

Following acceptance into the

programme, a non-refundable deposit of

$295 (10%) will be required to confirm

a student’s place. A payment schedule

will be established with final payments

needed 60 days prior to departure.

“The Maasin immersion was a fantastic opportunity to see another part of the world and to experience a completely different culture.”Joshua Kestel, 2013 Philippines Immersion
