Editorial

Life is hard. You have to make so many decisions all the time, every one of them potentially life changing (if you believe in the butterfly effect), and when you don’t even know what you are doing half the time, that makes it even harder.

Life is one big cruel lesson that we have to go through whether we like it or not, no one is per-fect and no one will make the right decisions all the time.

Why so deep and philosophical, Will? I hear you ask. Well, I have hurt the person I care about the most in this world. The most wonderful, beautiful, kind hearted, loving person I have ever met, and for that I am truly sorry. My amazing girlfriend of 3 years, Hannah. I am sorry I hurt you, and we have had time apart. I love you with all my heart, and I want you and the world to know that.

I think we all need to open up more and express how we feel not just me but you out there as well, yes you! Reading this right now, you!. Don’t hold it all

inside you, talk about it, listen and learn from your mistakes otherwise you will just keep making them again and again.

Well that’s my life lesson article for the year, I hope someone takes away something from this and makes a change in their life for the better, that would put a smile on my face. If not we can just go back to drinking ourselves silly so we don’t have to deal with life, al-though I don’t recommend that.

Op shop formal this Wednes-day and from what it looks like, it will be a strong turn out so get your grandpa’s clothes and look incredible.

The Social Sport ReportStudent Article

Where are YOU on Wednesday Nights??

Is the Australian Music Industry in big trouble? Do we need more DJ’s playing nothing but the local 93.1 StarFM playlist? OR, are Uni students inundated with so much work that the histori-cal and culturally significant Wednesday Uni nights are becoming a ‘too hard’ proposition?

Last Wednesday night two great bands appeared at The Crow Bar! Local support band The Ghouls are a cred-it to this town and have a future if they decide to head to one of the cities. However New Gods, ex Little Red (probably the most request-ed band from students over the last couple of years) were fantastic! Trouble was there was hardly anyone there to appreciate them.

Now I hear that the work-load you guys are getting has increased big time. Assignments and pending exams are keeping you very busy, but hopefully not too stressed. Now if this is the case and poor showings at Wednesday night’s is because you are all indoors working and studying, well, fair enough, you are here to get an education and that’s what you paid your fees for.

However if it’s because there are issues or problems with what is on, how much it costs, or how we promote it, then let’s discuss!

Is Live Music Dead or Dying?

There was a time in both the Australian Music Industry and the national university touring circuit, where bands, performers, DJ’s relied heav-ily on the ‘college’ market to make or break them. Like in the USA, Uni gigs and college radio stations were where new talents and un-earthed names were given the opportunity to be cre-ative and be ‘found’ if they had something special to offer. Am I correct in saying that is all history now? Will you only attend a live gig if the band or performer has a string of hits on mainstream TV and radio?

The agents I deal with con-tinually sing the praise of up and coming bands by spruk-ing that they are on high rotation on Triple J. However who listens to Triple J? It’s obvious to me that only a certain, and small, student demographic listens to this station now. Bit of a shame really, this could mean the death of original bands & performers, and therefore a very depressed national music industry!

We all have music/songs on our smart phones, comput-ers, I-pods. However re-member, those acts had to start somewhere.

Only a very small percent-age of new artists find their way to fame by way of cheesy reality TV shows! If in the future you are happy to listen to remakes and re-mixes of old material, then that’s the way we heading I believe.

Cost?

The price to get in on that Wednesday was $10. This is just over the price of one drink, OK if you drink beer, two drinks. This is to cover the band’s fee, support band’s fee, transport, ac-commodation, PA hire, light-ing hire, door staff, promo-tion, drink riders etc. There are also bar staff wages, security wages, buses for you to get home safely or in to town, shuttle bus costs and driver wages, heating/cooling, power, etc, these costs come from the bar revenue.

So obviously, your student fund lost some money on the night. Now that’s not the end of the world, your SRC makes that money avail-able all in the name of your “student experience” while attending this campus and Uni. Everyone wants you to have a bloody great time while you are here, espe-cially me! You will only get these important social and fun years once in your life, please make the most of them!

Out of seven events this term, only two have a door charge, one request for a gold coin donation for charity, and the rest are free! When there is a door charge, this is only an at-tempt to put some money back into your student fund, that’s all. There is abso-lutely no chance that a profit is made from you, we don’t think like that in Student Services, and we don’t act like that!

I am still very proud to say that this campus still has the cheapest ticket prices when touring bands/acts hit our venue! Please in-vestigate if you wish! Most other campuses charge a lot more, and, let the public into the Uni venues as well. The Crow Bar still remains a student only venue with one sign-in per student allowed. This way you are always safe, have smart like-mind-ed people around you, and lets you enjoy your ‘student experience’ without thugs, drink spikers, predators and the like, and the extra secu-rity costs that this brings.

So, ticket prices have come down and are as cheap as you will find anywhere, there are a lot more free nights, please have a think about that!

What’s On?

Your SRC and myself des-perately try to cover all bases and demographics.

We try for a mix of theme nights (this term there is a Retro theme, Emergency Services theme, and an Op Shop Formal), there are also smaller bar nights with a DJ, band nights, Final Flings, and sometimes the bar is open for you to just relax and make your own fun. But we DO open every Wednes-day night, Uni night!

We will never get the mix right to all likes and tastes, this is impossible to achieve. Music, arts and even fun, are subjective things thank the gods, we all have very different opin-ions, which is what keeps our world turning!

However we also have very open and positive minds, if you have a suggestion or two, please let us know. There is no such thing as a dumb question or sugges-tion! I’m all ears!

So What’s Keeping You away?

If it’s the cold, your SRC has just cemented approval for some heating to the outside courtyard and table areas!

If it’s the drink prices, let us know!

If it’s drink choice from the bar let us know. Remember we brought back ‘goon’ for O Party and Toga Party!

If it’s the promotion, then get your Term Events Calen-dar in your house,

room or dorm, join The Crow Bar Facebook page, read Hungappa, down-load the Pop Up Gigs app to your smart phone, look at the promotion screen in courtyard, keep an eye out for posters, or just ask your ‘bestie’ what’s on next Wednesday at The Crow Bar, I’ll bet they’ll know!

In Conclusion

As stated, if on Wednesday nights you are busy doing the work you have come to Uni to do and achieve, well great stuff and the very best of luck to you all, and be very proud about your results and achievements, I sincerely mean that. How-ever if you need a break, would like to socialize, need some culture, need to dance, need to sing, feel like some good ol’ fashion FUN, then please don’t forget YOUR venue, The Crow Bar, it’s there waiting for you every Wednesday night run by staff with huge smiles on their faces with one purpose only, to give you a GREAT student experience!

See you at Op Shop Formal, and please come say hello, remember I’m all ears!

WORD FUN: SLANG WORDS BACK IN THE 1950s

Slang words of the 1950's described a more innocent time

compared with those used in the 60's, 70 and 80's. You

will not hear 1950's slang being disgusting or

unpolished. Here is some classic 1950s slang:

“Baby” (A term of endearment).

“Bag” (A term used to describe a person's

particular interest).

“Cats” (A term for people who play jazz music).

“Chick” (A term for an attractive and young

girl).

“Lame” (A term for something that does not quite

cut it).

“Pad” (A term for a house or home).

Split (A term to describe leaving). “Witch doctor” (A term to describe a member of

the clergy).
