For over 60 years, CDC has been dedicated to protecting health and promoting quality of life through the prevention and control of disease, injury, and disability. They are committed to programs that reduce the health and economic consequences of the leading causes of death and disability, thereby ensuring a long, productive, healthy life for all people

CDC is globally recognized for conducting research and investigations and for its action-oriented approach. CDC applies research and findings to improve people’s daily lives and responds to health emergencies – something that distinguishes CDC from its peer agencies.

Diseases and Conditions

For the purpose of this presentation, I wanted to present some basic information to show what the CDC is all about and what types of information can be found on their website. As there are so many different topics I could discuss (which would make for a very long presentation), I will focus the remainder of my presentation on Diseases and Conditions

Hantavirus (HPS)

In 2000, my father was diagnosed with Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome. Being the first confirmed case in New England, and one of only 284 confirmed cases at that time, I turned to the CDC website to do some research.

Research

I found there is an incredible amount of information not just about Hantavirus, but all other diseases and conditions. I will use Hantavirus as a reference though the information is representative of what can be found for other diseases and conditions.

What can be found

What is Hantavirus (HPS)? How do people get HPS? What are the symptoms? How is HPS diagnosed and treated? How can HPS be prevented? What is the history of HPS? Technical/Clinical Information

MMWR Weekly

There is a publication called “MMWR Weekly” which contains information on specific cases as reported by state and territorial health departments and reports on infectious and contagious diseases. I found this of interest as my father’s illness is documented in one of the publications. It includes the history of Hantavirus and a timeline of events. It also includes my father’s age, residence, and specific details about his condition at the time of his illness.

In closing, the CDC is all about protecting people and saving lives. They work to protect every aspect of our lives, from home and family to the workplace and community. My presentation is just a small sample of the incredible work that they do.

Questions

1. Are there any other Health & Safety topics you feel should be included on the CDC website?

2. If you had a chance to read the MMWR Weekly publication (link on page 14), given all the social media outlets, it may be easy to figure out the name of the person in the case study. Do you think the article details too much about the medical condition of the patient, considering anybody can read these articles?

3. Have you referred to the CDC website for research before? Did it meet your needs?

4. Is there something on the CDC website that is of particular interest to you?

5. Is there anything that you feel is not appropriate for the CDC website?
