ert said. Sometimes, I have brides

come in without any idea of what

want. In that case, I have books and

ms full of pictures from what we

done over the last 30 years. I justo work with them to get exactly what

    want.

s prices go, Colbert said most

ries charge by the serving. Colbert

ges $2.20 per slice and said her

s typically cost between $180 and

    .

or brides on a tight budget, many

ons are available to cut the cost of a

lexandra Beard, cake decorator forolas Heavenly Breads & Sweets,

she could design a fake cake that

    dramatically reduce cost.

t is a tiered cake, but it is made

f Styrofoam and looks like a

    cake, Beard said. Then you

have sheet cakes on the side that you

    serve to guests.

Another way to save money is to have

a main wedding cake for the wedding

party and sheet cakes for the rest of the

    guests.

A sheet cake is going to cost less

than the main cake, and that can be agood option especially in large

weddings, Colbert said. And if money

is not a concern, go with the biggest and

    best center cake.

    The wedding

    cupcake has

    become a popular

    trend the past

    couple

    of

years, according to Colbert and Beard.

The cupcakes usually are placed on a

multi-tiered stand, or tree, and served to

guests. The cupcakes also can be paired

with a main cake that is served to the

    wedding party.

We really just try to do what the

bride wants, Beard said. I try to helpthe brides dream cake come alive.

    hoosing a Date

    UE [email protected]

or everything there is a season.

nd brides can weigh the advantages

ch season when choosing theirding dates.

Choosing a date for the bride depends

    heir budget, especially in this

    omy, according to Natalie Taylor,

al events planner for Taylor Rental in

urn. If (the couple) chose a date that

f-season for vendors or event halls,

etimes they can get a discount.

Wanting a particular flower can play a

art in choosing a wedding date if the

has always foreseen it as part of herding. Certain flowers, such as tulips

some types of orchids or peonies,

not be readily available for more

few weeks a year or else at a

    ium cost.

t just depends what the bride

foresees for their wedding, Taylor said.

    Planning a wedding around holidays

    can be tricky.

Some people think if they schedule a

wedding around the holidays, likeChristmas, Labor Day and the Fourth of

July, they can get a lot of people to come.

Sometimes that ends up as either hit or

    miss, Taylor said.

The bride must do a lot of research to

make sure those who RSVP really intend

to come during holiday season. If a

couple choose a holiday wedding date,

they need to plan several events not

just one day for the wedding, Taylor

added. Some people do a golf outing on one

day. Others host a brunch and gift

opening the day after the wedding. These

    carryover events ensure something for

    everyone during a holiday wedding.

I think if you are going to have

people there for a holiday, you need to

adjust for these things. And you have to

figure this into your budget, too, Taylorsaid.

Travel also needs to be considered. If

family will be coming from all over the

    country, that becomes an additional

    budget item, as well.

    wedding for all seasons

Any season of the year can be rightfor a beautiful wedding.

think you have to schedule around

ly events, if that comes into play.

y of the couples getting married

dy have children, or are blending

lies, and you have to take that intount. Or they have very large families

    other weddings to work around,

    or said.

aylor has seen a trend for couples to

se a Friday or Sunday wedding,

h sometimes results in a discount

    reception halls and other wedding-

    ce providers.

The nice thing anymore, there really

t any more traditions or rules the

kind of do just whatever they want, aid.

vent planner Linda Grant of Wedding

ms by Linda in Antwerp, Ohio, offers

    ntages for each season:

    January, February, March People

t nearly as busy and guest attendance

is higher. The bride usually can get a

discounted rate from all vendors because

they are not as busy. White lights,

snowflakes and winter themes could be

used for decor. Flowers could be a lot of

calla lilies they are white and elegant,

    simple.

April, May, June Color tonesusually change to mores springy hues.

Black and white are the bridal colors all

year long, according to Grant, with the

accents from whatever color the bride

chooses. The advantage of April and May

is that the season starts to get busy, but its

not peak like June, so the availability is

better for reception halls and vendors.

Guests are not quite as busy as far as

    vacations, leading to better attendance.

June is definitely the No. 1 weddingmonth of the year. Grant has serviced

more than 13 weddings on the same date

    during the month of June.

July, August Brides often use the

same colors as summer. Warm weather.

September, October The fall is a

gorgeous time, Grant said, and October

is rated right up there with June as far as

    popularity.

The weather has cooled down, but

you dont have to worry about the snow.

might be a bit chilly, but its a good time

    of the year, Grant said.

November, December When yougo into November and December, you

enjoy the decor of the holidays, which is

nice, said Grant. She recently used more

than 40 trees with white lights, canopies,

uplighting and spotlights for a winter

reception. Some of the holiday weddings

are among her peak days for attendance.

Given the chance to suggest a partic-

ular month for a wedding, Grant chose

    November without skipping a beat.

The weather is still promising, thereis not going to be a blizzard. And its the

    least-busy month in the wedding

    business, Grant said.

But at the end of the day, Grant didnt

offer a negative for any season.

Any day is a good day, she said.

    OLE HACHA-THOMAS

[email protected] planning can be stressful,

once a bride and groom have

ded to walk down the aisle, the

    ations and wedding apparel choices

t have to be a hassle.

    e invitation

he invitation has been compared to

st impression. Deb Klink, owner of

    r Gourmet in Auburn, certainlyes.

What better insight into the event

what is to come than the invitation

    f? Klink asked.

    link said invitations can be

whelming. From the shape, size, ink

r and paper weight, to choosing an

invitation with a RSVP card or a return

postcard, the choices can be daunting. But, Klink said, couples shouldnt be

    discouraged.

    You shouldnt have to compromise

your hopes and dreams because of your

budget, she said. Often, a cheaper

    alternative can be found without

sacrificing the overall quality of the

    invitation, Klink said.

As for what is trendy right now,

Klink said brides are choosing to

incorporate their wedding colors into thedesign, and they are choosing pocket

    invitations that include separate cards

    inside each envelope with matching

    response cards, reception cards, hotel

    accommodation cards and direction

    cards. The bridal gown

    Perhaps the brides most important

part of wedding planning is selecting a

bridal gown. Everyones eyes will be

glued on the bride, and the right dress isimportant. Mandy Nowels, owner of

    Special Moments in Kendallville, said

    choosing a dress sometimes gives

women the most stress when they plan

    their weddings.

But, she said, it is important to work

with a shop you trust, where you feel

comfortable. She said brides often begin

their dress searches a year in advance.

And with weddings as stressful as they

are, worrying about the dress ordering, alterations or pickup shouldnt be

something a bride has to dread.

A bride should think about how a

shop operates, or how the staff makes

them feel, Nowels said. (Bridal shops

can get their hands on almost any dress.

It is about feeling comfortable with the

    people you are working with.

    Currently, nonwhite dresses are the

trend, with warm, earthy tones taking

the lead. Nowels said brides arechoosing ivory, champagne or blush-

    rooms attire probably isnt the

    talked-about aspect of a wedding.

    Mitch Davis of Mitchells Mens

hing and Tuxedo Rentals in Angola

there are a few choices grooms can

e to stylize a tuxedo.rom the length of the suit jacket to

whether a bow-tie is paired with a vest

or a cummerbund, the combinations are

endless, Davis said. Currently, he said,

couples are opting for the vest with an

accompanying long tie, because it offers

much more color than the alternatives.

    Cummerbunds are out, while longer

jackets are slowly making a comeback. As for long tails, Davis said they arent

as popular as they once were.

By far and away the best choice,

right now, is the vest and Windsor tie,

    Davis said.

    One other important decision to

consider, Davis said, is the shoes.

    Comfort is key, he said.

    Comfort-wise, the square-toe tux

shoes are the most popular, he said.Men dont want to wear pointy shoes

    all night.

    ENDALLVILLE When it comes

    oosing engagement and wedding

, its important to keep the costdable, according to a Kendallville

    ler.

ts really easy to overspend on the

ding set, said Morris Barker of

    ers Jewelry in downtown Kendal-

    e.

ouples need to put into perspective

they can afford for rings, factoring

    her wedding costs, Barker said.

A young marriage needs as little

s as possible, and financial stressa lot, he advised.

Word was put out about a decade ago

a young man should spend two to

months income on a ring, but that

a fabrication from people with a

    vested interest in selling diamonds,

    Barker explained.

Take a look at what you can afford.

Theres no disgrace in going small to

begin with. If youve got the money, itsgreat to go big, Barker said. If not, look

to go bigger in a few years when you

    can better afford it.

    A groom-to-be also should consider

his brides taste if hes shopping for a

ring without her along, Barker said. In

most cases, the bride is with the groom.

Factors include the color of the metal,

    Barker explained. Some women prefer

white gold to yellow gold, which affects

price.Traditionally, the center stone is a

diamond, but thats not a hard-and-fast

rule either, Barker said. He has set

    everything from cornflower sapphires to

emeralds in wedding sets. Couples often

put the brides and grooms birthstones

    in the rings.

Its important to know the shape of a

stone the bride would like, Barker said.

Right now, princess cuts and roundsare the most popular, he noted.

But there are a lot of other shapes for

    stones heart-shaped, oval, emerald-

cut, marquis and some fancy cuts with

unusual shapes and different types of

    facets, Barker said.

Once the shape is decided, Barker

said, the couple need to consider the

four Cs color, clarity, carat weight

    and cut.

Diamonds are priced differentlyaccording to the amount of yellow in th

stone, Barker said. To a point, less

yellow equals a higher price. However,

vivid yellow is a specialty, precious

ouve found your perfect mate.ouve got a date for the ceremony.ve got the church and pastor all lined

Whats next? If youre smart, youllplanning for the reception right away.llowing time to get the location you

want is a must, according to KendraKlink, operations director at the AuburnCord Duesenberg Automobile Museum, apopular reception site.

The bridge and groom should find

their reception hall at least a year inadvance, Klink said. Being flexible isalways important.

According to Klink, one of the first

things on the minds of brides and groomsis how much they will have to spend.

Cost is always one of the firstquestions, she said.

The No. 2 topic on peoples minds is

food. Many venues offer their own catering

services and others, including themuseum, have a selected list of caterers.Choosing a different caterer could costextra.

At the Potawatomi Inn, people are notallowed to bring in their own food, according to Diane Morey, the innsdirector of sales, but they are permitted tobring in a decorated cake.

Things to keep in mind include:

the guest list. If you plan on inviting300 people to your reception, dont pick asite with a maximum seating capacity of200. The occupancy level is one of themost frequently asked questions, according to Morey.

the site of the ceremony. Where willthe wedding take place? Will you beasking guests to drive a considerabledistance from that location to thereception?

your personal style. What kind of

location would you want? Somethingsimple? Something elaborate? Are yourtastes more down-home or fancy?

Once you have those criteria in place, make a list of possible reception halls inyour area. Then go through the list andeliminate the ones that dont match yourneeds, your vision or fit in with yourwedding-day budget.

Once your list has been narrowed, takesome time and visit the two or threereception halls you are seriously consid-ering. Get a feel for the layout. Will therebe adequate dancing area? Where wouldthe DJ or band be located?

Some receptions halls will allow thingother wont. The Potawatomi Inn, forexample, does not allow fog or bubblemachines, glitter or confetti.

Another factor to consider is the timeframe. Will you need to be out of thereception hall by a certain time? Is thereany flexibility or extra cost if the

reception runs over?Having a list of questions you want toask can help you make an informeddecision when visiting potential sites.

ne of the first things newlyweds needeck before planning their honeymoon

is their bank account.Experts recommend couples take a

hard look at their finances and make surethey can afford the trip they are dreaming

about. And if money happens to be tight, there are many affordable optionsavailable.

Consider factors such as how much

money you are earning, how much creditcard debt you think you can handle, andwhich expenses you will have to incurright after you get married.

Then come up with an estimated figurfor how much you are willing to spend onyour honeymoon.

Decisions have to be made. Do youwant to embark upon a two- to three-weejourney? Or is three to five days longenough for you to relax and enjoyyourselves?

If youre on a tight budget, you maywant to lean toward a shorter honeymoon because lodging costs are among thehighest charges on any final travel bill. Ifyou still want to lengthen your trip, consider low-cost options such as a roadtrip instead of airfare or relaxing at an in-town resort or hotel.

Newlyweds who want to make suretheir honeymoon is an enjoyable trip havemany options open to them.

Phyllis Howe, a travel agent forEdgerton Travels Mishawaka office,

recommends that a trip to one of theisland nations can be both unforgettableand affordable for those on a budget.

Any of the Caribbean islands havebeen very popular for newlyweds, as isJamaica, Howe said. The Dominican

ublic is also becoming more and morelar each year.

Want to stay in the United States?e says Key West, Fla., is a nicenation where you will pretty much be

anteed warm weather and sunshine.rlando also offers many opportunitieseople who want a domesticymoon.

Disney has numerous properties ande parks, and there are also a lot of

Disney options available in centralda, Howe said.new trend is for couples to set up a

ymoon registry so family and friendscontribute to a wonderful trip for they couple.

ont assume you have to jet off rightyou get married. There is no hard-fast rule that a honeymoon has to ben immediately after a wedding. Inits quite common for couples to

y their honeymoon for several weeksonths after they tie the knot.

Wedding planners have good adviceouples who, for a variety of reasons, take a real honeymoon right away.

at case, they recommend couples atsplurge and reserve the honeymoon

you cant afford it for the entireymoon, at least do it for the firstt. Many hotels and bed-and-kfasts have special honeymoonages with hot tubs, massages and

mpagne.nce a couple is on their honeymoon,

they need to take the time to do thingstogether they might not get to do at home. That includes moonlight walks on thebeach and picnics.

If you are in an area with water, take aboat trip alone or go kayaking and find alittle remote area where you can be alone.Be sure to bring a nice bottle of wine andcheese to snack on. A nighttime picnic

under the stars is always romantic. And while it may be obvious to most

people, dont forget to ask friends andfamily members for advice onhoneymoons. Find out what others havehad fun with.

Theres no need to re-invent the wheelJust have fun and keep it romantic.
