Brides, Grooms, and Wedding Enthusiasts,

Kudos to my dedicated and talented team who put together this issue. Quite an expanded issue. We attended more wedding shows, including the Total Wedding Show and the National Bridal Show, and we’ve partnered with high profile  organizations  such  as  Wedding  Saviours,  O.M.G.  Events,  and  Jane Dayus-Hinch Weddings. This issue features the launch of several advice columns to target specific topics you’ll need to think about as you plan your wedding. Check out our ever-growing group of Preferred Vendors. These companies have been personally reviewed and are some of the best wedding professionals in the Greater Toronto Area.

You’ve been planning, creating, meticulously putting every detail down to the T, hoping, praying by the Gods that you

haven’t forgotten a single detail because let’s face it, that could be disastrous. You deserve the best and your wedding should go off without a hitch. OOPS! Snap back to reality, as perfect as things may seem to outsiders we are always going to need those back up plans, those Band-aids so to speak.

So here it is, as if you don’t already have enough to think about. Let’s make another list, a SURVIVAL KIT for the bride and her bridesmaids.

Clothes– First we’ll start with what to bring for your clothing. Bringing a sewing kit will help ensure that any rips, snags or other catastrophes on your dress can be fixed. Safety pins are a good accessory to be included so that those who are unable to sew can so very quick fixes. White chalk to cover up staining, or a tide pen to help remove stains are a must. Nobody wants to see the beautiful bride, or her bridesmaids with wine stains on their dress, or any other stain for that matter.

Face - It is common for brides to get their makeup professionally done before the wedding but depending on when the makeup is completed (and of course uncontrollable circumstances such as the weather) your makeup may need some touch ups. Always pack some makeup basics to keep you looking your best. Include tissues, blotting papers, makeup remover wipes and q-tips to aid you in applying or fixing makeup mistakes. It also doesn’t hurt to have a compact mirror in case you don’t have access to a full sized mirror.

Hair – Women know how easily a beautiful hair style can fall to pieces, sometimes all it takes is a gust of wind. While you will likely get your hair done professionally, or have it completed before the beginning of the wedding, there are some useful items

to have alongside to keep your hair looking its best. A brush and comb, hairpins to re-pin any stray hairs, hairspray to hold any alterations you’ve made, and hair elastics just in case you need to tie off some hair.

Smile – The cameras will be flashing at you the entire day so let’s keep those pearly whites shining. Bringing a travel sized tooth brush and tooth paste, dental floss and mouth wash for all the hugs and kisses you’ll be receiving on your big day.

Nails – You’ll be sure to be embracing friends and family, shaking hands and how tragic would it be if your hands were rough and dry? Bring some hand cream to keep your skin feeling soft as well as a nail file, super glue and extra nail polish to keep your nails looking as though they are fresh out of the salon. An extra tip: Clean Nail polish works wonders on snagged pantyhose.

Body – All this planning may give you a headache, so let’s not let that ruin your big day. Pack along some Advil, Tylenol or Motrin. Some other important tag along items you should consider bringing are tampons so there are no surprises, Tums just in case all the stress upsets your stomach, hand sanitizer and deodorant to keep you smelling fresh.

Feet – Last but not least, we should not forget about your feet. Those lovely feet you will be standing on all day and evening long. Bring some slippers or flats to switch in and out of when you are not in your heels. Along with all your other first aid items be sure to bring foot cushions and foot slips just to prevent blistering and just in case any blistering occurs.

These items are just a few ideas to get you started on your list but don’t forget, you can never be too prepared. Be creative and search around. Try asking others about their personal experience. The more prepared you are the smoother your day will go!!

When most brides think about their wedding day, the saying is “Something Old, Something New,

Something Borrowed and Something Blue.” The original poem however goes as follows: “Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed, Something Blue and a Silver Sixpence in her Shoe.” This tradition started within Great Britain as far back as the early Victorian Era. Whereas Christianity has connected the colour blue to the Virgin Mary, each item refers to a good luck token for the bride. If the bride carries all four items on her wedding day, she will have a happy and prosperous marriage.

Something Old represents continuity with the Bride’s family and their past. Something New represents optimism and hope for the Bride’s new life ahead. Something borrowed represents an item from another happily married friend or family members whose good fortune in marriage is supposed to carry over to the new bride. Something Blue symbolizes love, modesty and fidelity. Before the late 19th century, blue was a popular colour for wedding gowns. This is shown in proverbs such as “Marry in blue, lover be true.” A Silver Sixpence represents wealth and financial security. Dating back to a Scottish custom where the groom puts a silver coin under his foot for good luck, it is optimum to have the Sixpence placed in the left show. A more modern twist is to use a dime or copper penny (now no longer in circulation!) as a substitute. The trend of Something Blue usually includes items

with a one day use – such as a garter, shoes or flowers. Although these items are fun, they don’t always last forever. A new idea is taking over engagement and wedding rings thanks to designer Vera Wang. She added the strong and gorgeous sapphire to her new engagement ring collection. All brides can now sport the “Something Blue for Eternity” collection. Some may argue that the sapphire has been seen for a few years now but the detailed placement of the gem right below the diamond is what makes this ring line all more special. It’s perfect for brides who love the sapphire but still want the classic engagement ring look.

The sapphire (made from blue corundum - it is the hardest natural mineral after diamonds) is a gorgeous stone next to the diamond. The sapphire represents sincerity, faithfulness and a solid foundation of truth. In Isaiah 54:11, the Old Testament the writer describes laying “foundations of sapphires,” with the gems representing truth. Some believe the sapphires also contain the energy of healing, love and power, as well as contributing to mental clarity and promote financial wealth. These dazzling rings have so much meaning and good fortune behind them so it would make sense to pair them with the tradition of the something blue. It is an extension of any bride and groom’s vows to each other nestled on the left ring finger connected to the bride’s heart for eternity.

As a Wedding Photographer, I am often asked by both the Bride and the Groom about unique ideas I have seen when photographing other weddings. As I typically meet with my clients during the

beginning of their planning stage and a couple more times throughout this process, I am privy to enjoyable conversation at each meeting, sharing in their excitement as the details come together.

It’s probably one of the most common desires a couple will have when envisioning their special day… being unique. It is not as easy as one might think primarily because most couples will start their planning process with big ideas, a fresh spirit and plenty of patience. As the details unfold, time passes and costs are realized, being unique can often take a back seat to just making sure all the traditional wedding checklist items are looked after.

It doesn’t have to be that way. It doesn’t have to cost any more then what you imagine a traditional wedding, and in fact may cost you less in some cases. The moment you implement one unique detail or one hundred unique details you have instantly removed yourself from the line up of brides waiting to pay ghastly prices to wedding venders… because they know you require their product or service. This day belongs to YOU and the one you love. Make the time and effort to make it personal and unique. Your guests will remember it forever but more so, you will have wedded in your own love story.

Coming up with unique details may certainly seem quite daunting at first, however I can assure you if you keep it simple and personal it can be very much the most stunningly unique event you’ve ever imagined. It’s in the little things, but not too much though {wink wink}. From custom flatware to pb & j sandwiches at midnight, fancy flowers and costume themed bridal parties, undiscovered backyard bands to vibrant pea green accents! The options are endless and if there is something that encompasses who you are together, it can be done!

I thought I would share a few wonderful details that have left a footprint in my creative memory in hopes to inspire and start your thought process with ease.

{Unique Wedding Details}Leave a personalized note for each guest at their place setting … ‘thanks for coming all the way from Ottawa Chris, it means a lot to us’

If you plan on having a photo booth, bring along white poster paper and thick black markers. Your guests will certainly enjoy writing messages, which will be used as the backdrop to all the photographs your guests will enjoy being in!

Instead of a boring and oh so traditional ‘guest book’ that will likely show dirt and dust and perhaps not stay together for very long, invest in a favorite book your and your bookworm share the love for and have your quests write on the pages of your wonderful coffee table quality book.

When sending out your wedding invitations, include a song request list on the reply card to ensure that your guests will be dancing the night away to the music they were hoping to hear.

Loving the monochromatic look but too afraid to use white? Put all your bridesmaids in white dresses, just make sure yours is a tad more beautiful {smiling}. There are no rules to being personal.

Put your head table amongst your guests. Be personal with them. Really share a meal together.

Hate speeches? So does everyone you ask to give one and they will sweat about it for weeks before the big day. Grab your videographer and have individual shorts recorded by those that would give a speech. Compile them and voila, you’ve got a personal home movie with personal messages delivered in a unique fashion… but the best part is that your bridal party and parents still send you a Christmas card for not putting them through that.

Have a Sunday Tea Party Wedding? Why not? If the element of drinking and dancing foolishly into the

night doesn’t appeal to you, have a Tea Party. Make it quaint and make it over the top! The

details can be extraordinary!

Go back in time! If you both enjoy the wonders of thrifting, transform your day into a time capsule. Your guests will talk about that for a very long time.

Location! You do not need to have a reception in a hall that is damp and dark! Locations are begging to be married upon and how cool they can be! Railway stations! Open strawberry fields! A deep wood festival! A historic library! A picnic! Farm! Lighthouse! Greenhouse! Apple orchard or even a movie theatre.

What tickles your fancy? It’s possible. Don’t live in regret by fast forwarding to ten years from now, after attending many

other weddings, you might wish you had more unique memories

of your own day.

Start at the beginning. Have a plan. Don’t lose your vision to wedding

stress. Don’t look elsewhere to come up with what is personal to you, create

it by taking what is meaningful and find a way to share a little bit of you with those

that are important in your lives that day…. {In your unique way}.

Ladies we can’t lie when it comes time to plan

your wedding, you will be the one calling all the shots. The groom will always be there to support you and help with whatever you may need, but if he has the bright idea for neon orange to be incorporated into the décor, I think we all know who is going to win that argument. So while you’re deciding on the wedding cake topper, why not top it off by adding another cake? No need to keep scratching your head with confusion, I am about to explain what I mean.

Your future husband won’t get much if any say in the wedding planning process, so why not get him a cake of his own to

show your appreciation. The cake can revolve around the ideas he had for the wedding that got shot down faster than tequila at a bar, or it could involve a theme of everything he loves or just one thing that he loves. One of the

more common trends for a groom’s cake is making it show off his favourite sports team. There are a variety of decorating platforms that can be applied to this idea which includes sculptured cakes or something simple like a one or three-tiered cake.

There is another option that could make this idea even batter (I know how to spell but couldn’t resist throwing in a good play on words) Depending on your vision and flexibility, your groom’s cake could make up one half of your actual wedding cake. One half of the cake can be how you the bride wish it to be and the second can be made up of what the groom wants. It’s a fairly new concept but one that shows true compromise, which isn’t always a piece of cake, but in this case it literally could be. One final idea for a groom’s cake

is to not even make a cake at all. Instead you could make a make-shift cake out of his favourite things, like beer cans put together in a cake formation. You could even get plexiglass bins in the different round shapes and fill it with a variety of his favourite items or things that have meaning for the two of you.

Any way you slice it, the ideas previously mentioned in the article are a great way to show your husband-to-be that you care and appreciate everything he does and puts up with during what feels like planning a circus instead of a wedding. Depending on what version of a groom’s cake you go with will vary in pricing, but remember when you include or surprise your husband to be with his own cake, his face and that moment will be priceless.

Sometime during a trip to Italy, Sabina Morell knew exactly what she wanted to do in life.

Morell, owner behind cremahh, a collection of artisan gelato and specialty drinks, says she loved gelato since she was a child.

“I always loved all the different gelato flavours they had and the taste was so authentic. On the last trip to Italy, my husband and I discovered crema fredda caffe which is a very thick iced espresso that tasted like heaven. I spoke to some of the gelateria owners and worked with them to learn some of the techniques to make the crema fredda caffee,” she says.

As soon as Morell returned home, she started thinking more and more about her tasty trip. She began thinking about combinations and toppings and asking herself, ‘which toppings would go best with soft gelato?’ In 2012, she took her thoughts and taste buds and opened up her own creation: cremahh.

“Yes, there is some nervousness as there should be [opening up a business], but I was confident and our initial response from the market was very positive,” she says.

Today, cremahh offers gelato for retail sale out of a production company and customers are also encouraged to order flavours online. Popular flavours include tiramisu or white chocolate gelato with ribbons of raspberry and meringue.

“The full cremahh gelato experience is really about customizing your own flavours to create a special and memorable

experience. Our cremahh gelato experience starts with our soft gelato in almost any flavour you can think of -- it is incredibly flavourful on its own but then when you add one of our wonderful marblings such as chocolate biscotti (ribbons of chocolate with little crunchy biscotti inside) and then top it with another complimentary flavour, it adds another dimension,” she says.

But there’s another reason why Morell’s gelato stands out. Because it’s not as cold as traditional ice cream flavours, it’s actually easier to taste all the flavours you’re mixing. She also stands by using fresh and high quality ingredients, and using local and natural products.

And when it comes to weddings and entertaining, let’s just say Morell has a secret weapon. cremahh also offers a speciality gelato bar – right at your event.

“It doesn’t get any fresher than that! We have unique flavour and topping combinations and work closely with our clients to truly customize their gelato experience to make sure that it complements the brides and grooms theme, colours and seasonal preferences,” she says.

Using a mobile gelato experience, cremahh is able to offer more to her clients. Each mobile gelato shop comes equipped with two baristas and specialized flavours that work with the bride and groom’s theme. The shop also offers specialty drinks like granita, crema fredda caffe and Italian sodas.

“We serve any time of the day, right after the ceremony, after dinner as the dessert or as a late night sweet treat,” she says.

So far, the most popular gelato choice at weddings is a creation of a salted caramel gelato with chocolate biscotti marbling, topped off with more caramel. And if you’re not a fan of dairy, don’t worry about it. cremahh also offers catering services with soy milk and rice milk.

And serving gelato may be an alternative way to serve dessert altogether. With many couples these days opting out of buying full wedding cakes and buying mini cupcakes, creating candy bars and serving smaller-sized cakes instead, maybe ice cream and gelato bars are trends to look forward to in 2013.

“I think in general Canadians are trending towards healthier eating habits and gelato is a great example. It is much healthier than ice cream as it has a lot less fat content in it.”

As Canadians, we don’t dare to expect mild days in January for fear of angering the weather gods. Yet, on

Saturday, January 19, 2013, without asking, we so humbly and so gratefully received. The Wedding Planner Magazine - Greater Toronto Area headed out on an unseasonably warm winter day to its destination: The Total Wedding Show at the International Centre in Mississauga. Stepping into the expansive space, we set out to interview exhibitors and get up close and personal with the people who make the wistful fantasies of a hopeful bride into reality. And we even got to enjoy the thrill of an entertaining fashion show too!

Just Temptations Dream Desserts & Wedding CakesOur eyes betrayed us first. The extravagant and ingenious dessert display at Just Temptations Dream Desserts & Wedding Cakes carried the promise of a delicious slice of culinary heaven. We were assured that we’d be addicted to the sweetness of the indulgent masterpieces and the claim was far from unfounded. Loathe to show our eagerness and exhibiting great restraint, we gingerly reached for a dainty piece of cake, and as our tongues made contact with the sweet ambrosia, we happily relished the sensation of the

dessert’s lusciousness. Just Temptations Dream Desserts &

Wedding Cakes takes great pride in working hard to gain a bride’s

D&W Entertainment GroupWe followed the entrancing beats emanating from D&W Entertainment Group and dropped by to speak to Wayde Salmon (co-founder of D&W) and DJ Craig Brooklyn (who was working the booth). Brooklyn, with 20-plus years experience (corporate, private, touring, celebrity events), believes that at the core the DJ business is all about being there for the bride and groom-to-be. It’s important to gage the clients’ interest and create an event that the couple will always remember. When a couple meets with Brooklyn, they are meeting with the actual DJ who will be working at the wedding. Fashion ShowA bridal fashion runway has the remarkable ability to raise the fluttering beat of a bride’s heart. Even before a single bejeweled stiletto graced the shiny white floor of the expansive stage, our attention was commanded by an extraordinary talent: Grenville Pinto. His masterful and evocative stroking of the violin strings made you forget all else. His heart wrenchingly beautiful music dominated the stage. Try and keep a foot still and not tap along, if you dared. Just before concluding his piece, he looked up, made eye contact with the mesmerized audience and sneaked in a beguiling smile.

Impression Bridal - Whimsical and romantic are the thoughts that came to mind as the model brides floated down in gowns from Impression Bridal. Details were not missed. The subtle yet eye-catching rhinestone beading exuded elegance. We were bewitched by the daring sophistication of the high slit gown displaying a stunning leg and dazzled by the extravagant taffeta ruffles on other dresses.

Mona  Richie  - A gasp of delight filled the show as adorably charming flower girls burst onto the stage parading their dresses. Whether simple or frilly, the girls posed to perfection. But it wasn’t just about the pretty girls, as precious as they were. A handsome ring bearer joined them with a gorgeous dog from the Oakville and Milton Humane Society. The brides then took the stage carrying bouquets from Ashton Creative Floral - a florist offering the highly unique service of personalizing your bouquet by printing a message. The gowns stood for sparkly elegance. The shine of the beading reflected ever so beautifully as the models came out with exquisite jewelry from Forever Feminine.

Tuxedo Royale - Providing formal wear for over 30 years, Tuxedo Royale carries 32 styles and a very substantial variety of vest and tie colours for the client to choose from. Not to be outdone by the bridal loveliness, the men and the darling little ring bearer came out in Tuxedo Royale wear re-enacting a morning of the wedding scene. Smiles permeated the room as we watched the nervous groom shake hands with the father of the bride while carefree groomsmen laughed in amusement.

David’s Bridal - Full and rich fabrics stormed the stage as David’s Bridal made its appearance. Showcasing White by Vera Wang, the newest of the Melissa Sweet collection as well as Galina

Signature, we were entranced by the details and discriminating yet powerful sparkle emanating from the creations.

The Bay - For those desiring a destination wedding-moon, the Bay provided a tasteful yet brilliant collection for the men and women. This celebration of colour was a welcome sight for our winter strained eyes and had us all pondering whether to jump on a plane and say “I do” on the warm sands of a tropical destination.

Josy’s Fashions - The little people of the day showed us all how to carry class and sparkle in creations that were both traditional and yet veered ever so cleverly off the sewing needle track. Displaying traditional white and cream gowns, they also had intense bold colours and dresses with intricate and intense detailing. As one of the brides entered, we were overcome by the beauty of a dress that had a cape-like layer of colour which would sashay as she walked. For brides desiring a stunning dose of glitter, Forever Feminine jewellery simply sparkled.

Brideabella and Moores for Men - Featuring styles for the bride which embodied their commitment for fit to perfection, they also showed how the bridesmaids can radiate dazzling allure in crisp fitted designs that would be sure to make them very happy to wear the badge of bridesmaid honour.

Sophie’s Gown Shoppe - Musical magic filled the air once again as Grenville Pinto played a rousing rendition of Gangnam Style whilst the little bridal people danced to joyous applause. Then, it was time to move to a more relaxed pace as the soft melody of Canon in D filled the air as the brides entered. Tight bodices and luxurious multi-layer ruffles set the scene for the final walk of the show.

Giveaways - We were enticed to stay in the seats after the show for the giveaway announcements. From photography packages, wedding decor consultations, gift certificates and more, some lucky fashion show viewers walked away with fabulous prizes!

“You never forget your first...” Carmelina Karas purred as she slid her fingers away from the keyboard and turned to face me, eyes blazing with purpose.

Karas, CEO and Editor of The Wedding  Planner  Magazine  - Greater Toronto Area, was responding to my question about why have a print magazine? In an age when we live instantly connected to the world through a small phone, I was curious to understand the value of a piece of paper.

A young and vibrant personality, Karas walked me through the steps of seduction as a bride enters her first bridal show. As that bride walks into the showroom she wants more than just to see, she wants to reach out and touch; grab what’s in front of her with eager fingers burning with excitement. The magazine becomes her muse. She can rip out sections with her friends as they all laugh with careless delight. Far beyond a flimsy page, the magazine represents a dream.

The chic and smartly dressed woman sitting beside her smiles smugly. Holding a steaming latte in her hand and taking a careful sip before speaking, she focuses her sleek and stunning brown eyes upon me. “Yes, the magazine paints a dream picture,” she affirmed. The polished presence in front me of me: Alexandria Damouni, owner of O.M.G. Events, an event planning and décor company. She then went on to tease, “Now imagine bringing that

picture on a page to rock the core of real life!” I was spellbound and craving to hear more.

There is a story to be told about a moment that will undoubtedly go down in bridal show history. The making of the French-inspired and sensuously named J’adore Wedding Gala which will be held on March 24, 2013 from 12:00-6:00pm at the Venetian Banquet & Hospitality Centre in Concord.

It all began, I’m told, on a Sunday afternoon. Karas, seeking refuge from the cool winds blowing outside, sat inside a popular coffee shop. Suddenly, Damouni appeared with her 2-year old son, Robbie in tow. Karas and Damouni were about to meet face-to-face for the first time. Having communicated through email, they each had an idea of what the other looked like. Spotting Karas and making discreet eye contact, Karas nodded and Damouni briskly walked over with a little person dangling from her hip.

Placing the toddler in the seat beside her and smoothly extending her hand to Karas in greeting, Damouni sat down and faced the magazine editor. The two business women had agreed to meet to discuss Damouni’s interest in advertising with Karas’ magazine. What happened next may seem astonishing yet it’s the plain truth.

Somehow, the conversation veered towards the two working together to develop a bridal show. With an eclectic mix of childlike imagination and astute business savvy, the two minds erupted in

creative collaboration. The small but curious eyes of Damouni’s son observed quizzically as the show’s central theme spewed out excitedly from Damouni: “Marie-Antoinette!” she exclaimed.

Inspired by the influential yet tragically misunderstood Austrian born princess who became one of the most famous queens of France and in fact of all of history; Damouni wanted to pay homage to a woman who had left her indelible mark as a timeless icon. As guests enter the J’adore Wedding Gala, they can expect to find a greeter styled very similarly in the manner of say, a baron, in the days of beautiful Marie-Antoinette and the French royal court. A horse and carriage will even be at the show as well.

There is no argument that a wedding is one of the most significant days in a bride’s life. As such, wouldn’t it stand to reason that having an enjoyable planning experience would only enrich the bride’s overall experience? And so Karas and Damouni couldn’t think of a better way than to delight an otherwise stressed and overworked bride than with a unique and relaxing bridal experience. In fact, the first 100 brides who pre-register online for the wedding exposition will receive custom swag bags valued at $40. If guests arrive feeling a bit peckish, they can first feast their eyes on the magnificent Marie-Anointette-esque strolling canapés and then of course, satiate their hunger with exquisite amuse-bouches.

Brides are encouraged to bring their bridesmaids, parents, and oh yes, their beloved fiancé as well, to take part in the J’adore Wedding Gala experience. Obsessed with details, these creative women have thought of it all. Stunning models will shine on the bridal show catwalk featuring not only haute couture fashions for the bride but also for the rest of the wedding party. Fashion show viewers can savour the signature “Versailles” cocktail while reveling in the bridal runway entertainment.

Following the second fashion show, TV celebrity and wedding planner extraordinaire Jane Dayus-Hinch of Wedding SOS fame, will address the audience, sharing the kinds of hints and tips which are not usually found in wedding books. In fact, a limited number of tickets for a 1-hour VIP experience with Dayus-Hinch (which would occur prior to the start of the J’adore Wedding Gala) are available. Brides can relax and nibble on pastries, croissants and also sip on coffee, tea, and sparkling mimosas. This extraordinary VIP experience will also include the bride having one-on-one time with Dayus-Hinch. For those unable to see Dayus-Hinch at the VIP experience, she will have her own booth at the gala and

So, you’re getting ready for a Summer wedding. You want  to  rock out  that  killer designer dress that MUST have been made just for you (“OMG! It was made for me!!!”) and look like a billion bucks!    Only  problem  is,  it’s  strapless.and perhaps  you’ve  neglected  to  keep  those  arms and  shoulders  in  tip-top  shape.   There  is  time!  And there is hope to get those bi’s tri’s and delt’s into fantastic shape and make that vision that’s in your head come alive on your big day!

Let’s face it, like it or not YOU NEED WEIGHTS.  This is for 2 reasons:

1.  Resistance training CHANGES your metabolism - cardio alone ain’t gonna do it.  Your  body  requires more  energy  to  simply maintain muscle mass. The more you have, the more calories you’ll burn even at rest - pretty cool, huh?

2.  Resistance training helps slow the aging process!   Well  sort of  -  resistance  training will help to prevent the pull of gravity (the dreaded  flabby  arm  sag!!!)  and  keep  you looking tight!

And  if  you’re afraid  you’ll  end up  looking  like The  Incredible  Hulk,  or  Captain  America, here’s  a  newsflash:  IT’S  10X  HARDER  FOR A  WOMAN  TO  PUT  ON  MUSCLE  THAN  IT IS  FOR A MAN.    This  is  because  on  average, men have 10x the amount of testosterone in their bodies than women do.  Having said that, most men  don’t  have  the  genetics  required  to  build huge  muscles  on  their  own!    There’s  a  huge supplement industry thriving due to that fact!

Now that I’ve decided I’m going to give it a go, what exactly do I do?

There’s a LOT of information out there and it can easily  become  confusing  enough  to  make  you want to take your ball and just go home.  Here are a few standard exercises that target the right spots:

Biceps  -  curls:  hold  a  dumbbell  in  each  hand with your arms at your sides, palms facing forward.   Without bending the wrists or moving your  upper  arm,  bring  the  weights  to  your shoulders by curling your arms.  The only thing that should move is your elbow.  The more work you can do by just flexing your biceps alone, the better  results you’ll get.   Finish off  the curl by slowly lowering to the starting position.

Triceps  -  overhead  triceps  extensions:  can  be done  sitting  or  standing  -  just  make  sure  you keep  your  back  straight.    Grasp  a  dumbbell around the shaft and raise it straight above your head so that your arms are fully extended. Lower the weight slowly, bending only at elbows so the weight  is  just  behind  your  head.    Now  extend your arms so the weight is again directly above your head.

Shoulders - shoulder press: start with a dumbbell in each hand, bending elbows and raising your upper arms to shoulder height so the dumbbells are  at  ear  level.    Press  dumbbells  up  and  in towards the center line of the body until the ends of the dumbbells touch lightly, directly over your head, and then lower the dumbbells back to ear level.  Don’t bend your neck - keep your head as straight as possible.

In order to make the most of these exercises, do 3 sets of 12 reps.    If you aren’t sure how much weight you need, use the heaviest weight you can complete 12 reps with.  And don’t forget to write down what you’ve done!  There are many, many different types of curls, extensions and presses -  these  are  just  a  few  of  the  basics  to  get  you started.   Variety will  keep  your  body guessing, which  is  important  because  it  prevents  your muscles from getting used to the same old ‘same old’ that can slow down progress.  If you are new to  weights,  you  need  to  know  that  2x  week  is more than enough.  Your body is actually doing a  lot  on  your  rest  (non-weight) days.   Besides, you’re  planning  a  wedding!    Keep  it  simple, and  those  arms and  shoulders will  be  Summer Wedding ready in no time!

O.M.G. Events moved quickly and purposefully into the pleasant respite found at Direct Energy Centre in Toronto to check out the National Bridal Show on Saturday, January 26, 2013.

Royal Posh -- the full princess experience After passing through the admissions booth, we click-clacked our walking boots with purpose towards the Royal Posh booth. Julie Adams-Tenzythoff, who co-owns the bridal, prom and occasion dress boutique with her spouse Doug Tenzythoff, greeted Karas, the Wedding Planner Magazine CEO and Editor, with a radiant smile and presented her with a stunning royal blue gown. Once Karas had draped herself in the fine soft fabrics, she was transformed by Royal Posh into a being of unmatched beauty and class. The bridal show experience had certainly begun with great promise.

As a child, Adams-Tenzythoff, would lovingly play with her dolls singing softly to them as she would brush their hair and carefully choose colourful frocks to adorn them in. As a mother, she has lovingly passed on that love for celebrating a girl’s natural beauty with her own daughter. With her spouse Doug Tenzythoff, this passion and longing to create beautiful dress dreams eventually culminated in the opening of the Royal Posh dress boutique, located in downtown Oakville. The elegant shop which opened in mid-December 2012 caught the attention of renowned celebrity wedding planner, Jane Dayus-Hinch, star of the TV show Wedding SOS.

I do! Wedding CakesHazelnut praline....pink velvet.... The titles caught our attention but it was the moist and decadent taste that lingered in our mouths well after we’d savoured the sweet bites that made us hunger for more. Bright and towering displays of cake filling our eyes with wonder, we hung around for a bit at the I do! Wedding Cakes booth to chat with Tuan, on behalf of owner Olivia. Tuan and Olivia are dear childhood friends and now collaborate side-by-side to make luscious cakes for a bride’s monumental day.

“Seeing dreams come true,” was the soft reply that Tuan gave The Wedding Planner Magazine - GTA after we asked what made the wedding cake industry dear to them. When a bride saunters into the cake shop, she may have an idea of what her cake should look like or perhaps she may not. Through insightful questioning, a dialogue will emerge and soon the wedding cake, which may have seemed but a distant blurred image, becomes a sweet tasting reality.

In the past, wedding cakes received negative attention on account that aesthetics were focused upon more than the flavour. I do! Wedding Cakes takes special care to ensure the designs only scratch the surface of the rich icing and the taste is the sweet surprise within.

Although there are 12 flavours on their signature list, I do! Wedding Cakes are always willing to experiment and if a bride has a flavour in mind, then all she needs to do is say so. Starting trends is a passion for these talented artists. The pink velvet that we tried at the National Bridal Show for example, is an inspired new flavour that they have created to enhance their already titillating taste collection.

Mindful also of giving back to the community, they have provided cakes and cupcakes for Ronald McDonald House on Family Day as well as for the cancer ward at the Hospital for Sick Children.

Iuliana and Brandon were going up to Sauble Beach for the weekend as they often did. However, the weekend started a

little different than usual. When they first arrived Brandon made one of Iuliana’s favourite desserts for her, a chocolate molten lava cake. Surprised by the behaviour but not wanting to complain, Iuliana enjoyed the unusual treat.

The next morning Iuliana woke up to her favourite breakfast in bed. Surprised again by the unusual special treatment, Iuliana questioned Brandon’s motives but he insisted he just felt like doing something nice for his girlfriend. Following breakfast they fulfilled their craving for some good outdoor time and went for a 5km hike by Walter’s falls. After the hike, Brandon suggested they go to see the sunset on the beach and then a nice dinner. So, Iuliana started getting ready and noticed Brandon’s anxious state as he paced about in the bathroom watching her get ready. He kept insisting they had to make it to the beach on time for the sunset. Iuliana unaware of his plans stated “there will be hundreds of sunsets for us to see, what’s the panic about?” Brandon replied that they had such a wonderful day he wanted to keep it going into the evening. So Iuliana got ready faster.

They arrived at the beach 20 minutes before sunset and while standing on the beach Brandon handed Iuliana an envelope with her name on it. She opened it and read the letter:

Dear Iuliana,

I promise... To wipe your tears when you cry,To make you tea when you are sick,To hold your hand when you are scared,To stand beside you and never leave,To help you succeed in whatever you do,To support you when you make mistakes,To make you breakfast on Sunday morning,To make you smile when you are mad,To love you...

After reading the last line she looked up at Brandon and he said “To love you forever and always” and he went down on one knee, opened the ring box, and said “Iuli will you marry me?”. Iuliana’s eyes filled with tears and she said “Yes, of course!”. After hugging and kissing, Brandon went over to the car and pulled out a blanket, laid it out on the sand, and then pulled out a bottle of champagne and chocolate truffles. They watched the sun go down followed by a lovely dinner at the nicest restaurant in town.

It all started a few months ago when Jon told me that his brother Josh, and Josh’s fiancee, Mandi,

wanted to go on a road trip to Nashville so that Josh can visit a guitar factory, and they wanted us to come with them. So fast forward to December, I get the time off of work and we drive down to Tennessee on Dec 28th. When we arrive there, we stop at the Opryland Hotel, which is a really fancy hotel that can hold something like 3000 people. All the rooms are located around the outer walls of the hotel, and in the middle are atria with a huge indoor rainforest. There are tons of real plants, waterfalls, and even a river running through one of the atria, with a riverboat ride that guests can take. I was surprised that we were staying somewhere so fancy, but I was told that Josh got a really good deal on the rooms.When the boys come back from checking us in, they tell Mandi and I that the hotel messed up our rooms, so they are giving us a free ride on the riverboat the next day, along with some money to spend at the hotel. So we decide to go eat dinner at the hotel, and ends with us all going to bed after such a long trip getting there (about 13 hrs of driving).

On day 2, we decide to sleep in, and go on a hunt for an IHOP for breakfast. After breakfast, we begin driving around looking for the alleged “guitar factory” that was, to my knowledge, the entire reason for the road trip. So we drive around Nashville unsuccessfully for about an hour, and decide to return to the hotel to relax in the hot tub for a while before dinner. As we are about to go in the hot tub, though, Josh announces that he’s not feeling well, but I am able to convince him to come to the hot tub for a while. While in the hot tub, Jon keeps asking what time it is, and reminding us that we have to be ready for our ‘free boat ride’ at 7 pm. We finally leave the hot tub to go freshen up before the boat ride, and

Josh, once again, starts feeling sick. Mandi decides to forgo the boat ride and stay with her ‘un-well’ fiancee, so she sends off Jon and I. When we get to the entrance of the boat rides, there is a huge line up of people, who must have been waiting for over an hour. Jon goes and talks to the lady working there, who says to him “Oh, you’re the private boat ride”. Jon agrees, and we are led to a privately set up boat, with a small covered table, champagne glasses, and chocolate. We are ushered onto the boat, where someone takes our picture, and music (all songs from Jon’s favourite bands) starts playing. It’s not until we are almost finished our boat ride that Jon pulls out a small red box from his pocket, and shows me the most beautiful ring I have ever seen. Once we are engaged, the lady driving the boat stops in front of a waterfall for pictures, and asks us to turn and look at one of the many bridges spanning the river. On the bridge, we see Josh and Mandi with a video camera, as well as Jon’s parents who had come down to Nashville for the occasion, and had been hiding out in the hotel for the past day, in fear that I would see them somewhere! The rest of the trip was lovely, we got to spend time together, appreciate the beauty of all the plants in the indoor rainforest of the hotel, and also got some shopping in!

So, where did Jon get this idea for his proposal? When he was in high school, his father had a business convention at that same hotel, and his parents took Jon and his siblings on the river boat ride. At that time, the tour guide mentioned that sometimes people rent out a private boat for the purpose of proposing. It was then that Jon told his parents that one day he would propose to his future wife on that same river boat ride. And over 10 years later, that’s exactly what he did!

Mike and I met 7 years ago through my ex boyfriend (he was friends with a guy named Trevor, Trevor had a girlfriend

named Brooke and Brooke was friends with Mike) I know confusing haha

anyways, we went to a party and I met Mike and I thought he was really funny, nice and really cool. We hit it off right away but of course just as friends.

About 2 years later my ex boyfriend and I broke up and Mike broke up with his ex, we started to hang out more and more and became best friends, he would tell me everything and I would tell him everything too.

It was February 18th, 2011 and Mike had asked a few of us friends if he wanted us to come up to his parents house for the weekend because they had gone away. I wasn’t going to because I didn’t feel like driving all the way up north and I thought I was coming down with the flu. But after he assured me he would take care of me and make me tea I agreed. I got up north on the Friday and all night I noticed he was sort of flirting with me which i thought was extremely weird since we had been friends for so long. That night he wanted to show me how to salsa so I said okay, and then he kissed me!

That kissed changed my life forever, I know there was something special about him and he said after that kiss that he has liked me for so long and he couldn’t hold it in anymore. I was completely shocked and didn’t know what to say i knew i felt the same was but was worried in case it didn’t’ work out how that would effect out friendship. I told him I needed time to think i knew I liked him but was just scared of getting hurt.

The next month was my birthday we had been talking but not as much in the weeks leading up to my birthday which i was celebrating in Niagara. Mike ended up coming and that night I knew I had to tell him. So I did and that’s when he kissed me again and it was the best feeling of my life.

We ended up spending our 6 month anniversary in Niagara so we did a bike tour, went camping and on the way home we were in a really bad car accident. I thought if we can survive this accident we can survive anything. About 5 months after that my good friend passed away of breast cancer, then on 31st it would have been my friend that passed away’s 31st birthday and I lost my job on that very day!

After that I moved in with Mike full time, and moved to a new city where I didn’t know anyone. Being at home all day by yourself takes a toll, and one day Mike came home and asked if I felt like going to dinner, I agreed.

We went out for dinner, and I felt like the entire night something was wrong, he wasn’t talking much and seemed really nervous. I kept asking what was wrong and he brushed it off. After dinner he asked if I wanted to go for a walk down by the lake I kept saying no it’s freezing... not even cluing in that it was February 18th our one year anniversary. So I finally agreed and we sat there for about 10 minutes and I kept complaining that I was cold, finally he said “ you are the best thing that has ever happened to me, and I will be by your side forever, I love you until forever will you marry me” I have never been so happy my entire life, at that moment I knew everything would be okay as long as he was by my side.

Mike and I will be getting married in the Mayan Riveria this January 28th, 2013. I can’t wait to spend the rest of my life with my best friend!

Welcome  to  the  first  real  estate  article  for  the Wedding Planner Magazine GTA!

Since  the  theme  is obviously  ‘weddings’  it  only makes sense to share my own ‘love story’ so you can get to know your resident real estate agent a bit better!

Everyone  has  an  endearing  story  about  how they met and married the love of their lives. Mine began on the front steps of a friend’s house when I saw a shadow of what appeared to be a very  handsome  guy!  Within  minutes  I  advised my friend that she had to introduce us. She eventually introduced us and believe it or not my first impression didn’t resonate with what I saw when we met!

At first glance I thought “you must be kidding” the guy has a comb in his back pocket to brush his goatee!  It’s  longer  then his hair,  this would never  work!  Needless  to  say  we  got  to  know each other and I fell in love almost immediately, 

writing those three little words on his back as he lay sleeping about a month after we met.

Three months  later we moved in  together and I put him on the “five year plan.” Now obviously I was  just  having  fun with  him  but  on  our  five year anniversary, after a lovely evening at our favourite restaurant we pulled into his parent’s driveway because he had to “pick up” something.

As we walked to the back door, around the corner of the garage, the stone walk way was lined with candles. Music  was  playing  in  the  background and just beyond the garden was a bistro set with a  bottle  of wine  chilling.  Immediately  I  started to  cry! We barely made  it  to  the bistro  set  and he was down on one knee. Of course I said YES!

We were married one year later, surrounded by eighty of our closest friends and family under a  tent  in  the  same  garden  that  he  proposed! Now twelve years after we met, we are happily married with two beautiful children.....www.KimberlyClark.ca

In a time when we strive to exemplify the motto of giving back, I fortuitously found myself at the right place at the right time to

live out the “pay-it-forward” philosophy. I had met a beautiful stranger - Sheryl Hammond, CEO of Bella Chic Events who introduced me to the world of Wedding Saviours. An initiative of businesses coming together and generously providing their time and services so that a couple in need can receive a free wedding. As part of the application process, the couples would be asked to describe how they would also give back to their respective communities.

A few short weeks after meeting Hammond, the Wedding Saviours launch date had arrived. I walked into the Italian Canadian Club of Milton and immediately felt inspirited by the energy in the bright vibrant hall. Soon I spotted Hammond smiling as she greeted me enthusiastically with a warm hug. The team atmosphere in the air was undeniable. Hammond introduced me to Brenda Holdsworth (uniquely and aptly titled Chief Wedding Officer) as Wedding Saviours is her brain child. Holdsworth in turn introduced me to Jane Dayus-Hinch, an internationally renowned wedding planner and TV host of reality show “Wedding SOS”.

I was soon introduced to Carmelina Karas, Editor and

CEO of The Wedding Planner Magazine - Greater Toronto Area. While we waited for the

event to begin, soothing piano music played in the background - a particularly memorable piece being a rendition of 1000 Miles by Vanessa Carlton.

Delicious appetizers were provided by RoJo Thyme Catering and Kelseys (Milton). A mouth-watering feast was to be had: beet salad with goat cheese on a spoon, delectable chicken wings, mushroom arancini with garlic aioli, mango and red onion bruschetta, cold cuts, and mini-pizzas. For those needing a caffeine rush and a boost of sweet sensation, Tim Hortons (Milton) was on the scene. Kelseys (Milton) also offered to cater the rehearsal dinner (April 10, 2013) for the Halton/Peel Wedding Saviours wedding.

Shortly before the event officially began, Hammond sauntered over to the bloggers and said, “Once the champagne is poured, the party begins!” Words to live or marry by, if you will.

The event was a multi-region Wedding Saviours launch for Halton/Peel, the Greater Toronto Area, Kitchener-Waterloo, and Red Deer (participating via Skype). Hammond took the podium and reminded us all of the value of us working together and not in silos: we are after

all, a team. Together. Everyone. Achieves. More. She then introduced the phenomenal woman behind this ingenious concept.

Brenda Holdsworth took the microphone and proceeded to tell us a story. One day, she was sitting on the deck of her backyard sipping wine when an idea came to her. What if, she mused, a band of businesses came together to throw a free wedding. Smaller businesses coming together and helping out a couple in need. A website contest was created from this idea. Holdsworth enlisted the aid of a friend who had worked on Gemini awards voting to create a voting link for the contest. Couples could apply online for a contest to ultimately win a free wedding. The website received a whopping 1.9 million hits!

Holdsworth confessed that she’d seen rough times in her life. She had gone through a zero budget wedding and struggled as an entrepreneur. Holdsworth further shared that Dayus-Hinch had found Wedding Saviours through Facebook and eloquently described how Dayus-Hinch gave Wedding Saviours the wings to spread out.

Holdsworth then turned the microphone over to Dayus-Hinch, a top UK wedding planner for 29 years. As the first-class event planner candidly told a captive audience, after planning 1000 weddings, she’d lost count. Mesmerized, we listened as Dayus-Hinch described the legendary experiences she’d had as a planner. Is there a book that tells us what to do if the bridegroom doesn’t show? Moreover and devastatingly, is there a book of procedure for when a mother dies in the front row? Dayus-Hinch has guided people through these very scenarios.

The vision for the Wedding S.O.S. show came after Dayus-Hinch having 4 days to plan a New York wedding and was asked to pick only 3 things that the couple could have. This savvy wedding expert felt that the couple should choose the 3 things. And so, from New York to Ontario, Dayus-Hinch, as fairy godmother to one couple, “saves weddings” in 10 days.

This wedding planner par excellence went on to explain that she wants to raise the Wedding Saviours profile across Canada, and truly believes that this is the start of a huge project. This is about making dreams come true for couples who can’t afford that dream wedding. It’s also about bringing great businesses together and creating a fabulously motivating networking experience. And so, with those

encouraging words ringing through the air, Dayus-Hinch asked us to stand up, take our champagne glasses and cheer exuberantly to toast the event, “Hip Hip Hooray!”

Rosanna Conteduca, owner of Allegra Organic Spa in Milton and Board Member of the Italian Canadian Club of Milton (ICCM) then came up to the podium. The Wedding Saviours mission was highly intriguing to the ICCM and very much mirrors their own core values. On behalf of ICCM President Dominic Pasqualino and Vice President Angelo Posteraro, she promised that the ICCM Wedding Saviours wedding for the winning couple in Halton/Peel on Friday, April 12, 2013 would be flawless and memorable.

The Wedding Saviours team leaders for the regions of Halton/Peel, Sheryl Hammond; the Greater Toronto Area Eddie Suliman; and Kitchener-Waterloo Kate Vanderlugt each took the microphone and proudly introduced their stellar teams that would work to create unbelievable weddings for the winning couples. The Red Deer Team Leader, Heather Markiw, introduced her great team via Skype.

Bruce Holdsworth then came up to the podium. This initiative’s purpose is to reach out to find a couple in need. In turn, the couple will keep the spirit of the pay-it-forward philosophy by finding ways to give back to charities in their own community.

Applications will be accepted until April 4, 2013, shortlist to appear April 5, 2013 and then voting between April 8-22, 2013 and the winner announced on May 14, 2013. The weddings will take place sometime in Autumn 2013.

The microphone was then turned over to Mayor Gordon Krantz of Milton. With his 55-year wedding anniversary just around the corner on June 28, 2013, an event bringing a beautiful wedding together certainly holds significant meaning for him.

Before kicking off the cake cutting (deliciously beautiful creation by She Bakes Me Cakes) and flurry of pictures captured by SNAP Milton, and Stacey Newman Photography; Hammond gently reminded us that if we could reach out to our networks and find more donations, even chicken, then it would be immensely appreciated. “We need your meat!” she cried out as roar of raucous laughter boomed ecstatically throughout the room.

And the best part is? This party has only begun.

So you’ve done it, you’ve both found your other half; the man has gotten down on bended knee and proclaimed to

the world that he wants to marry you, his wife-to-be. Now we understand you’ll be feeling very jittery and ecstatic and happy and every other adjective I haven’t used yet. However, when the initial hype has thus subsided you’re faced with a reality that hasn’t dawned on you till this moment: you now must plan your wedding. For starters, you’ll need about a million things and one planned out before you say I do. Luckily for you though, I will be providing you with only the important things that you have to account for, so for the sake of both you and your other half’s sanity, we’ll keep it to six important things.

One of the most important things is the ceremony itself, and as the most important part of a wedding we’ll be covering this first. Now, some couples who like yourselves have no idea what to do, leave the planning of the ceremony to the very end, well…maybe not the planning of the actual ceremony, but finding a place. If you neglect to find a suitable place to hold the ceremony first, then you’ll find yourself in the worst position possible: you’ll have the entire ceremony planned out, you’ll be visualizing it, maybe even dreaming about it and then suddenly you’ll cringe in the realization that you don’t have a place to hold the ceremony. So before anything, find a place first. Make sure as well that you ensure both the place and/or minister that you wish to have at your wedding to marry the two of you are available before putting down a deposit. Having a place for the ceremony is important, and equally so, is the place of the reception. If you’re planning on having the ceremony and reception separate, ensure the same thing: that it is available.

With that being said, it is important to understand that having a wedding that flows smoothly and one that is memorable is one of success. Success though, is a journey, not a destination; corny, I realize, but it is a journey that you will embark upon and to complete that journey you need to have a timeline. You need to know when you’ll be doing what and when something needs to be done. As you navigate your way through this journey, things will

become stressful and crazy. If you haven’t effectively planned ahead, reaching your destination (the Big Day) will not be as fruitful as it could have been – which is something nobody would want.

Now it’s to be expected that people of all walks of life are involved in your life and in saying so, it is expected that the people who attend your wedding will all have different tastes and preferences. I hope to the God in Heaven that I don’t hurt your feelings when I say this: who cares what they want and like. At the end of the day, it’s your wedding, so you plan according to what your tastes and your preferences are. Of course, it’s always good to consider if there are any food allergies and the severity of such, but beyond that, it doesn’t matter if Uncle Bob thinks that red table cloth is better than blue because red symbolizes luck and fortune according to the Chinese. Satisfying everybody is astronomically impossible, and since this is universally true, the only sensible thing to do is to satisfy yourself! Now in talking about planning according to what you like, everybody likes space, so make sure that the reception and the ceremony are well spaced out, for your sake and your guests.

Two more things before I let you go off into the world of planning weddings. One: always, always, always make sure you check and consider the weather around the time of your ceremony as I have seen some amazing weddings ruined by the lack of preparation and consideration of last minute contingency plans on the special day. Last and finally: the idea of hiring professionals or amateurs/friends to provide services at your wedding. It comes down to preference for this in particular as you have to be prepared that people who aren’t professionals aren’t as good, This may seem obvious and this may initially be okay with you, but just don’t regret it when you re-watch the video of your wedding ceremony and you see that they have missed the first kiss you took during your wedding.

decor. When you shop online, it is easier to find exactly what you want instead of being limited to what is provided in the local stores. While shopping online, you might be able to find second hand decorations that may be unique and one of a kind.

Rent your decorRenting is an amazing way to save money. When you buy

decorations, a lot of it goes to waste. There are many local party and event boutiques that can rent decors.

RaidRaid your friend’s closets. This is when you pop by all of your friends’ houses and ransack the place. You will be surprised at the beautiful things you can use for decorations. Those can be table cloths, baskets, furniture, anything that can make your wedding decor unique without spending a dime.

Pick a reception hall that does not need a lot of decoration If you can choose a spot that is beautiful without the need for a lot of decoration, you have found yourself a great way to save money. A beautiful garden, a beach or a local museum are some amazing places to host your wedding.

There are so many crafty ways you can save on wedding decor. Be creative. Creativity will allow you to be unique and make your wedding

different. Apply your style in your choice of decorations and it will make it more memorable.

Choosing locations for photography is an integral part of creating any bride’s wedding day schedule. When selecting locations that will be prominently photographed, such as for preparations and family and wedding party portraits, it is important to keep in mind that there are different types of light. While daylight and natural  sunlight are flattering  types of  light, artificial  indoor  light,  such as  tungsten, can provide some not-so-desirable results. Here are a few basic tips on how to plan your wedding photography locations with the search for the best light in mind:

• Use windows. Whether you’re preparing in a hotel room, at home or at your venue, consider utilizing windows. The natural  light  that pours  in  is much more flattering that  the artificial  tungsten light  that  is usually  available  indoors. Windows  can also be a  frame  for  images,  and drapes  can provide some creative ground for images with a fine art feel. Most makeup artists also prefer to work with natural daylight, so don’t hesitate to choose a window area for stages such as hair and makeup, as well as finishing touches for dressing both the bride and groom.

• Step outside. If windows are  small  or absent,  such as  in  church basements or halls,  take advantage of  the outdoors. Ask your photographer to capture your details – the dress, the shoes and accessories – outdoors, and step outside for the last few minutes of excitement during preparations. Similarly, if your ceremony location is dimly lit, opt for the outdoors for formal photographs of the wedding party and family portraits.

• Avoid harsh mid-day sun. Natural sunlight is most flattering in photography. However, the direct sunlight that pours down around the noon hour generally gives off a harsh effect to images, making skin look overly bright and  causing  subjects  to  squint  eyes. One way  to  avoid  this  severe midday  light  is  to  choose a  location  with  shade  options.  Large  trees,  buildings  and  covered  outdoor  spaces  are  great solutions that still allow natural daylight to be a main source of lighting without the harsh effects of the direct sun beams.

• Think of glamming up your reception lighting. Most photographers come equipped with lighting gear, such as flashes and speedlights for indoor shots. While it is not necessary to learn the intricacies of properly lighting a shot, a few extra details can add glamour and excitement to the reception images. Small sources of light, such as twinkle lights, tea lights or a lit backdrop, can create beautiful blurred spots of light in the image that is also known as bokeh. Consider placing your cake and any other special items that you would like photographed beside or in front of these lights. 

• Take a walk at sunset. If you’re fortunate enough to have a clear sky at sunset, take advantage and ask your photographer for a quick session in the warm golden light. This light, which appears in the two hours before sunset and after sunrise, is revered by photographers as it creates stunning images and allows for halos around the subjects and lens flare. Lens flare is when sunlight enters the camera directly and leaves a burst or spot of light on the image. It is technically considered incorrect in the field of photography, however it has become popular in recent years and, if done properly, can add a level of artistry to your images.

Before: Getting a Marriage LicenseFirst of all, what is a marriage license? A marriage license permits you to be married in the province of Ontario, and it is a requirement for marriages in the province. Ontario marriage licenses are valid for 3 months from the date of issue, so it is best to apply and get it out of the way, instead of having such a small – yet crucial – detail mar your big day.

In Ontario, there are a few things to consider before applying for a marriage license:

1. Age• You must be at least 16 years old to get married in Ontario.

If you are 16 or 17, you must have written consent from your parents (official consent forms are available wherever you choose to obtain your marriage license). If you are 18 years of age or older, you can apply on your own.

2. Type of Marriage • In Ontario, you can have a religious marriage, or a civil

marriage. The only difference is that, in a civil marriage, a judge, justice of the peace, or an authorized municipal clerk marries you instead of your chosen religious representative.

• NOTE: If you have a banns form, you may not require a marriage license. A banns form, which is obtained from and published by the church in a “publication of banns”, may replace a marriage license. However, make sure that you thoroughly explore this option, to make sure the choice is legal and official.

• Regardless of the type of marriage (or type of document), you, your spouse, witnesses, and the person who performed the marriage must sign the document immediately after the ceremony.

• It is normally the responsibility of the official who performs the marriage to send the complete and signed marriage license (or banns) to ServiceOntario so you can get a marriage certificate after you are married. However, just to be on the safe side, review this step with your chosen officiant.

Once you have considered all of the details, you must apply for the license. In order to get a marriage license, you will need:

• A completed marriage license application • Your intended spouse • Two pieces of valid identification (must be originals)

• Birth Certificate• Valid Passport• Valid Driver’s license• Canadian citizenship card• Canadian Government refugee travel document• Conditional release identification card• United States green card• Native status card• Record of immigration landing• Permanent Residency Card• Citizenship card from any country• Ontario photo card• NOTE: Ontario Health Cards/Social Insurance

Number (SIN) Cards are not considered to be acceptableformsofidentificationtoobtainamarriage license in Toronto. Rules may vary according to other municipalities.

• The fee

Once you have all of the above, you must bring it to the local town hall, city hall, or municipal office. Most offices do not require both of you to be there – as long as both signatures are on the application, and the applicant brings identification for the intended spouse. Again, this rule may vary according to municipality, so make sure you check the website!

Usually the whole process takes about 20-30 minutes. The provincial information is available online at: http://www.ontario.ca/government/get-married-ontario. Each municipality has its own Town Hall, and online application availability varies according to each municipality. The listing can be found here: http://www.mah.gov.on.ca/Page1591.aspx. 

After:GettingaMarriageCertificateAfter you are married, you will need to obtain a Marriage Certificate. This document will be required if you ever need to:

• Show legal proof that you are married • Apply for certain social benefits • Settle an estate• Change a last name

In Ontario, a “file-size” marriage certificate is $15, and a “certified” size is $22 (plus applicable delivery charges). Delivery is usually 15 business days by regular mail, or 5 business days by courier for an extra charge of $30 per certificate.

You can normally apply for a marriage certificate 6-8 weeks after the ceremony (to allow the receipt of the marriage license, which is normally sent to ServiceOntario by the officiant). To apply, you will need:

• The marriage to be registered in Ontario • First and last names of both parties to the marriage • Date of marriage• Name of the city or town in which the marriage took

place

The Marriage Certificate can be ordered online at:  http://www.ontario.ca/government/marriage-certificate. If you do not wish you purchase one online, you can visit your local town hall, city hall, or municipal office.

These two steps may seem unnecessary, but they will create a huge mess in your life if you forget to do them. Include obtaining a marriage license into your wedding planning around 3 months prior to the ceremony, just to be on the safe side. Afterwards, put a reminder in your calendar to apply for the marriage certificate 6-8 weeks following your ceremony. Then, sit back, relax, and enjoy being married!

Congratulations, you’re engaged! Now focus. At some point it’s imperative that you shift your attention from the sparkly new piece of hardware on your finger to the business of creating your wedding budget. And yes, I mean business.

A budget is key. It will give you and your future hubby a jumping off point. It will help you stay organized. And hopefully, it will keep you from sinking every last dime you own into flowers and favours.

Firstly, determine who is paying for what. Parents might want to chip in, whether it’s paying for a portion of the wedding or taking care of the bridal shower. Increasingly, couples are asked to shoulder the cost themselves. Use this time to evaluate each of your resources. Do you have a friend who is a baker that might be able to make your cake as a gift? These contacts can cut your costs a great deal.

Be realistic, never allow yourself to take on debt in order to plan your dream wedding. You and your partner need to take a long hard look at what you feel comfortable spending and stay true to that number. Having you both agree will save you some headaches down the road when the stress of planning a wedding sets in. Record the number of the overall budget and break down the cost of each subcategory.

Prioritize what is important to you as a couple. Ask yourselves, what do you want your guests to remember about your big day? You may want to allot some additional funds to offering your guests unique favours, or a band that will have them dancing the night away. Guests tend to remember the food, so make sure you don’t skimp on that!

Build in a contingency fund. This is a great way to avoid going over budget. Have some extra funds aside in case you encounter any unforeseen expenses – it will almost always happen.

Check in with your budget regularly. Engagements are typically a year or

even longer. Throughout that year you may be tempted to tack on costs. A way to avoid losing sight of your budget can be to remind yourself what it is from time to time. As you find ways to save money on your wedding, you can also adjust your budget accordingly.

It’s important to create your wedding budget as a couple.

keep each other from going from wedded bliss to financial miss.

WHAT yOU WILL NEED:

This past Christmas, I felt inspired to make a part of the gift I would be giving to my co-workers. I saw a blog post a while ago about making homemade vanilla extract. I figured I’d give it a go. After eyeing the final product, I decided this gift could also make an easy and affordable wedding favour.

The key to this project is bottling the extract months in advance as the vanilla will be more dark and flavourful with age. Think at least 8 weeks.

First wash your bottles with warm, soapy water. Let them dry completely.

I purchased these bottles at Creative Bags (http://www.creativebag.com/). In this case, I only needed two for the gifts, but the more you buy of a particular item the cheaper it is. Each bottle is about 125 ml.

Next, use a sharp knife to slice down the center of a vanilla bean. I purchased my vanilla beans at the local grocery story. They were EXPENSIVE! I suggest you look online, yet another reason to start well in advance. I found a website (http://www.bulkfoods.com/whole-foods.asp?wholesale=4483) that sells vanilla beans in bulk. Being that my bottles are smaller, I used only one bean per bottle. However, looking back, I would suggest using at least two beans per bottle.

Place the vanilla beans inside each bottle and fill the bottles with vodka. Put the cork on snug and store in a cool, dark place. Your vanilla should be ready in about 6-8 weeks.

Last step is to decorate your favours according to taste and the theme of your wedding. You can add a personalized label with you and your husband’s name and the date of your wedding. I even added a matching tag in order to hand-write a special note.

Voila! Here is what the final product looked like. Keep in mind this is only 2 weeks after being bottled.

This simple project is charming, thoughtful, and can come in under your budget.
