WebQuest designed by Valerie [email protected]

Introduction

Here in the USA we love the word “vacation.” Most of us have been away from home for a week or so, perhaps visiting relatives in another state or going with our family to a nearby beach. What if you could spend your entire summer vacation in Spain with three of your friends?

Pretend that you and three of your friends have been given permission to live with a family in Spain during

the months of June, July, and August. You will each be given $3,000 for the summer to use as spending money, to do whatever you want to do…under one condition.

While you are there, you cannot do what you would normally do on your summer vacation here in the United States! There will be no sleeping until 2:00 in the afternoon, spending the rest of the day chatting with your friends on the computer. Instead, while in Spain, you and your friends must act as if you are Spanish teenagers. You must eat typical Spanish foods, observe traditional Spanish mealtimes, and behave in ways that Spanish teens do.

While you are spending your summer in Spain, in order to receive your spending money, you must keep a daily journal. Since you will be taking your iBook with you, this journal will not be written in a traditional notebook, but must be recorded in a Keynote presentation. Each student in your group will record a different aspect of what your

summer in Spain was like, and you will combine all of the parts into one presentation to be shown when you return home.

1. Choose a city in Spain that you would like to live in for the summer. You and your friends will share the responsibility for writing in the journal that holds all of the details about your summer stay.

All of your activities will be recorded in the “we” point of view. (“On July 6, 2005, we went shopping at … but found that the stores were closed between… and ….”) Investigate all of the details associated with living in the city you choose. Dig around and find some cool things that you think will be of interest to your friends back at home.

2. For your research, decide who among your group members will be investigating the following:

daily routine (what time you get up, what time you eat, what time you go out, etc.)

typical foods of Spain

places to go for fun how much money (listed in the currency used in

Spain) you end up spending each day

3. In your Keynote journal, you must have the following

components:

an introductory slide that tells what city in Spain you’re going to be staying in for the summer

a picture/photo on each slide an journal entry with specific details that range

from the time you woke up to the time you went to bed) for each day of the week, for one whole week

details that show that you browsed around on lots of Internet sites to find out about Spanish food, typical activities, etc.

interesting things that you found out about the city you plan to live in and/or about the life of a Spanish teenager in general

a concluding slide that sums up your summer stay in Spain

Process and Resources:

Food specialist recorder:

After choosing the city you want to live in, find out what foods you will be eating there each day and whether or not, as a Spanish teen, you will typically eat at home or eat out in restaurants frequently. Visit some of the sites below to gather the information you need. Check to see if there are lots of fast food restaurants in Spain.

Keynote Tips:

In your Keynote journal, be sure to choose a template and font that will not be distracting or difficult to read when viewed. Your Keynote presentation will be shown to the rest of your classmates so that they can see where you

“summered” in Spain. Be sure to include lots of visuals so that they can not only read about what you did, but see where you went.

There is no minimum number of slides that you must use; just be sure to include enough to explain all the various aspects of your journey as required.

Remember to give credit to the sites you used for information, especially if you quote directly from the site.

List the members of your group who contributed to the Keynote journal presentation; the names may be listed in the beginning or end of your presentation.

Conclusion:

We will watch all Keynote journal presentations in class after all of the projects have been turned in. After viewing all of the journal presentations, your classmates will decide which city seems like the most interesting to live in.
