A note from the Editor, Chris MyersPlease join members of the Parish Council and fellow villagers on Saturday 4th October for the Litter Pick/village tidy up. It is the opportunity to give the village a spruce up before the bad weather sets in. It is hoped that some daffodil bulbs can be planted in the verges as well during the morning. Take your pick of what you fancy doing! If anyone isn’t able to come along on the Saturday morning but wants to sweep the piece of footpath outside of their home, please sweep the debris into the gutter and the West Lindsey street cleaner will come around the village on the Sunday morning of 5th and give the village a sweep.

Whilst mentioning bad weather – if you are not signed up to my email list of residents of Langworth please consider letting me have your email address. I will send out notifications that I receive to those on the list for things such as missed bin collections due to bad weather, road closures, etc. It is a good way of spreading the word and then can be passed on to neighbours who perhaps aren’t on email. My email address is [email protected]

The Langworth Local continues to grow with items coming in from far and wide for publication, please keep articles coming in – deadline for the November edition – 20th October.

ARE YOU CONCERNED ABOUT THEFUTURE OF YOUR VILLAGE?

Land for housing development in Lincoln is now very limited. Consequently, to meet the pressures by central government to provide new housing in the area, development opportunities in the surrounding villages are being identified and promoted. Land in the Langworth area has already been identified

Currently, as residents we get very little say in what happens here. Land is sold; small, medium and large scale developers are acquiring this land and subject to approval and conditions laid down by Lincolnshire County Council and West Lindsey District Council, properties are built.

However it needn't be like this. Because of The Localism Act 2011 we can put into place a Neighbourhood Plan. Most villages and towns around us have already taken this step and have either produced or are in the process of producing their own plans. In other words they will have a say in how development takes place in their area. LCC and WLDC have to (by law) take their Plan into account.

Langworth Group Parish Council has arranged for an expert on Neighbourhood Plans to come and talk to us. Please consider our futures and watch out for the date of this presentation.

PARISH COUNCIL REPORT - MEETING 2 ND SEPTEMBER 2014 Community Speed Watch – Lincolnshire Road Safety Partnership has launched the Community Speed Watch Initiative (CSW), designed to empower communities to help themselves tackle speeding issues.

Page 8: parishes.lincolnshire.gov.ukparishes.lincolnshire.gov.uk/.../79/Langworth_Local_Octo…  · Web viewIt is a good way of spreading the word and then can be passed on to neighbours

Following the cost of £40 to Lincolnshire County Council for a licence agreement for site assessment and approval, 6 passive notices are being offered at no charge to the community. An interactive speed device is also being offered at a cost in the region of £2,000.

It was agreed that the offer of the Passive notices be pursued, the sites to be assessed.

With regard to the Interactive device it was felt that further information was required regarding battery life, maintenance costs and enquiries would be made with the Road Safety Partnership. In the meantime Cllr Mike Herbert is looking at possible sites for a reactive device should the Council decide to proceed.

Offer from Bridge House of assistance in providing help to the community - An offer of assistance (either practical or financial) had been received from Bridge House. This offer was gratefully received by members and due consideration given to suggestions made.

The Clerk was asked to reply requesting that practical assistance be given to path sweeping, bulb planting and the attendance at the forthcoming litter pick. (Since the meeting a path sweep has been carried out near to the Station with the assistance of Jacki Myers on behalf of Bridge House. The WLDC street sweeper followed picking up the debris. This has made a considerable improvement for users of the footpath)

Bus shelter near to Station – A grant has been offered by Lincolnshire County Council for the replacement of the bus shelter near to the Station. The current shelter has been there for many years and is in poor condition, currently being a tasty feast for wood worm.

Hence the Parish Council have taken up the grant - a new bus shelter is being made by Knights of Langworth and will shortly be in situ – at no cost to the parish.

Daffodil bulbs – The Parish Council agreed to purchase daffodil bulbs to the value of £35 for planting in locations throughout the village.

Litter Pick – arranged for Saturday 4 th October – Residents are asked to participate in the litter pick/tidy up of the village. Please meet at the Memorial Hall at 10.00am. It need only take an hour and such a difference could be made in the village. If you are not able to come down to the Hall please consider sweeping the area of footway outside of your home – sweep the debris into the gutter and the WLDC street sweeper will come along on the Sunday morning of 5 th October and do a road sweep.

Date of next meeting – Tuesday 7th October 2014 – 7.30pm – Memorial Hall.

Vicar’s Blog: October 2014

Towards the end of the summer I had a couple of weeks off and was able to enjoying doing what I never make enough time to do – read. One of the books I read was called ‘The Hiding Place’ by Corrie Ten Boom. It’s a powerful read, since

Page 11: parishes.lincolnshire.gov.ukparishes.lincolnshire.gov.uk/.../79/Langworth_Local_Octo…  · Web viewIt is a good way of spreading the word and then can be passed on to neighbours

Corrie was imprisoned by the Nazi regime for hiding and protecting Jews, during the Second World War. Her sister died in the camp, Corrie survived. Her Christian faith sustained her throughout that period and through the rest of her life. In the book she tells of the very poignant and moving experience of meeting one of the chief guards who kept her captive in the concentration camp. After the war was over she was preaching at a church service on the subject of forgiveness. As she left the pulpit and came down to the centre of the church, she noticed a man coming toward her with his hand extended and a smile on his face. She recognized him as the chief guard in the concentration camp where she and her sister had been incarcerated and where her sister had died. The guard’s face was beaming in response to her preaching. "Fraulein," he said, "How grateful I am for your powerful message. To think that Jesus has forgiven my sins and washed them away." Corrie Ten Boom found herself paralyzed as the guard thrust his hand out toward hers.

She could not raise her hand from her side. She writes, "Even as the vengeful thoughts boiled through me, I saw the sin of them. . . . And yet I could do nothing about it. I could not feel even the slightest spark of love or charity. And so I breathed this silent prayer. ‘Jesus, I cannot forgive him, please give me your forgiveness.’ And with that prayer she was able to lift her hand from her side and touched the hand of the man who had persecuted her. "From my shoulder," she writes, "along my arm and through my hand passed a current from me to him . . . and in that moment I discovered that it is not on our forgiveness any more than on our goodness that the world’s healing depends, the world’s healing depends upon God. When our Lord tells us to love our enemies, he gives us, along with the command to do it, the love itself"

Peter once went to Jesus and asked him how many times you have to forgive someone….. The answer was simple, keep forgiving. We often confuse forgiving with forgetting, or excusing the act that has wounded us – and sometimes we are terribly wounded. It takes great courage to forgive, but too it is an act of God’s grace worked in us and through us – so necessary in a complicated and broken world.

Please see the letter over the page from Bishop David Court, Bishop of Grimsby.

Every blessing Penny

Letter from Rt Revd Dr David Court,

First impressions, it is said, are important, so what are my first impressions of the Diocese of Lincoln - after actually being here in post, as I write, all of one week!

Page 12: parishes.lincolnshire.gov.ukparishes.lincolnshire.gov.uk/.../79/Langworth_Local_Octo…  · Web viewIt is a good way of spreading the word and then can be passed on to neighbours

Well the welcome has been all we could have hoped for, and we have met some wonderfully warm, affirming and incredibly helpful people. The sun has so far shone, and I have seen the county at what I suspect is its glorious best - and we have discovered a church full of heart and positively wanting to move forward.

It is a contrast to how we are often seen by the world at large - and yet I love the description of the Church in 1 Peter 'but you' he says, 'are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a Holy nation, a people belonging to God'.

That, despite all our flaws, is how God sees us. It is what we are called to live out - and I am looking forward to working with you to build 'faithful, confident, joyful communities' in the years that now lay ahead.

Bishop David Grimsby

Local people needed to make Lincolnshire greener with trees

Page 14: parishes.lincolnshire.gov.ukparishes.lincolnshire.gov.uk/.../79/Langworth_Local_Octo…  · Web viewIt is a good way of spreading the word and then can be passed on to neighbours

A Grantham-based tree charity has embarked on a new scheme aimed at growing woodland across Lincolnshire - and now needs the help of local people to help make it happen.

Lincolnshire is currently one of the least wooded counties in the UK with only 4.2% cover, when compared to the national average of 10%.

To help increase the number of trees and areas of woodland for people to enjoy, the Woodland Trust is now looking for people who would like to plant trees on their land. Trees will be supplied by the Trust after receiving funding from Lincolnshire County Council to improve the county’s green and open spaces.

No previous tree planting experience is necessary as specialists from the Trust will work with all successful applicants to make sure only the most suitable trees are planted in the right areas.

John Tucker, the Woodland Trust’s Woodland Creation Director, said: “Trees planted as part of the scheme don’t have to take up a large block of land. They can be placed in a range of places, such as field corners, shelterbelts or in strips across land. Whether you’re a farmer and want to plant trees for practical benefits, such as shelter for livestock – or a smallholder, and would like new trees to attract more wildlife or provide fruit for cooking or drinks making – we would like to hear from you.”

Colin Davie, executive member for the environment at Lincolnshire County Council, said: "I think this is an excellent scheme and I'd encourage anyone with a spare bit of land to get involved. If you're interested in receiving some free training as well as some free trees, please get in touch with the Woodland Trust."

John Tucker continued “Woodland benefits the environment by improving habitats for animals, insects and birds, and provides healthy and relaxing places for people to enjoy. Trees also offer wonderful opportunities for children to learn about the vast range of wildlife we have on our doorstep.

“We’re delighted to receive support from Lincolnshire County Council, and are looking forward to seeing woodland increase across the county which can be enjoyed for generations to come.”

People have until Friday 28 November to apply for the Lincolnshire scheme. They can apply or find out more information by emailing [email protected] or calling 0845 293 5689. More information about the MOREwoods scheme can be found by visiting www.woodlandtrust.org.uk/plant-trees

 New energy switch opportunity

Page 15: parishes.lincolnshire.gov.ukparishes.lincolnshire.gov.uk/.../79/Langworth_Local_Octo…  · Web viewIt is a good way of spreading the word and then can be passed on to neighbours

Kicking yourself for being too late to take advantage of the county energy switch scheme which is already saving cash for thousands of households? Well here’s another chance to join the exclusive club saving money on their gas and electricity bills. The new Lincolnshire Energy Switch Scheme opens for business on Tuesday 2nd September 2014. In previous schemes 4,700 Lincolnshire households have registered to join forces to get better deals from energy suppliers, making the county’s residents one of the biggest groups to tackle the energy companies for better tariffs.

Households are again invited to register for the Lincolnshire Energy Switch scheme, organised by Boston Borough Council, Lincolnshire County Council, West Lindsey District Council, East Lindsey District Council,  South Kesteven District Council, North Kesteven District Council, Lincoln City Council and Community Lincs through the Home Energy Lincolnshire Partnership, administered by the UK’s leading collective switching expert, iChoosr Ltd.

In the most recent auction, held in June, the average saving per household to take up their offer was £234. Households wanting to register for the next scheme can submit their details at www.lincolnshire.gov.uk/switch (if you do not have internet access, a friend or family member can do this on your behalf), call 01529 301 990 (9am to 4.30pm, Monday to Friday) or visit your local county or district council offices.

Once households have registered their interest, the energy suppliers will be invited to compete with their best offers. The scheme is free for households to join and there is no obligation to take up the winning supplier’s tariff offer.  All can register, whether you rent your home or own it, whether you are on dual fuel, electric only, pay monthly or quarterly or have a prepayment meter. And you don’t have to live in Lincolnshire. This scheme is open to all in the UK – so let your friends and relatives further afield know about it.

Karen Lond, secretary to the Home Energy Lincolnshire Partnership, and herself a Lincolnshire Energy Switch Scheme switcher, said:  “Collective switching schemes have been successful in saving households on their energy bills – I am now saving on mine.  People want help to find a good deal on their energy bills and are comfortable seeking this help in a scheme promoted by their local council.  Many who find the switching process baffling end up doing nothing and paying more than they need to. “Collective switching offers a straightforward solution. The more people who register, the more interested the suppliers are in winning them as customers and so the better the deal they offer.  People who register are offered a deal after the auction and they choose whether to take it or not.  Yes or no.  Simple, but you have to register to have a chance to take up the saving so register today and tell your friends, family and neighbours to register too.”

LINCOLNSHIRE POLICE

"Families Working Together is Lincolnshire’s response to the Government’s Troubled Families Programme. We will work with families in Lincolnshire to help reduce crime and anti-social behaviour, non-attendance at school and worklessness.

The aim of the project is to address family problems in a joined-up way. This is done through a dedicated Key Worker.

If you know of families who may be involved in at least two of:

Youth crime and/or anti-social behaviour; Non-attendance at school; Claiming out of work benefits

Then please refer to us!  The latest referral form and more information about FWT can be found at the Lincolnshire County Council website (please note that this service is voluntary and the family must consent to the referral).

What is Families Working Together?

Some families often need support from many different organisations. For example a member of a family could have problems finding a job, setting up routines for their children or managing the family budget.

Families Working Together (FWT) is about supporting families to find ways of making positive changes to their lives that will help solve these problems.

Support time depends on the needs of individual families, as all are different and will need different levels of support during difficult times.

This opportunity is being offered to a limited number of families in Lincolnshire, giving them the chance to make changes they need to make.

Page 17: parishes.lincolnshire.gov.ukparishes.lincolnshire.gov.uk/.../79/Langworth_Local_Octo…  · Web viewIt is a good way of spreading the word and then can be passed on to neighbours

What is a Key Worker?

Your family would have its own dedicated Key Worker who will help you shape the support you want.

The Key Worker:

• is someone for your family to spend the time you need with, someone you can really get to know and trust.• will co-ordinate support, arrange meetings and other activities with the differentorganisations as necessary.• will support your family to decide the best way forward and help put together a plan of action to achieve this.• takes time to work closely and get to know you, supporting individuals through theinevitable ups and downs of family life.• with your agreement, will share your information with other agencies, to help themwork together better.• will work through an assessment with you, and produce a Family Plan that will be regularly reviewed with you.

How do you know it will work?

We know it works because it has proved successful in other places around the country and there has even been a similar scheme here in Lincolnshire which has made a difference to families.

Traditionally, different organisations have looked at meeting different needs for different family members in isolation. This fresh approach looks at meeting the needs of the family as a whole. It has already proven to be a better way of supporting families to meet their needs, and provides a way of making positive changes that last. Families who have benefitted say they can clearly see the advantages of getting involved in this type of project. As well as making great improvements to their lives, they feel they are a stronger family.

Pharmacy Update - As you are no doubt aware, NHS England chose to award the Pharmacy License to another company. We have now lodged an appeal with The Secretary of State against this decision.

A group of patients have started a petition against NHS England’s decision. If you wish to add your name to the petition it can be found in the surgery waiting room.

A huge thank you to our patients for their continued support.

Patient Participation Group Coffee Morning - In conjunction with our shingles vaccination/flu mop up clinic, our patient participation group will be hold a coffee morning on Saturday 15 November 2014 from 10.00 am until 12 noon.

Usual stalls – cake donations welcome!!!

The group continues to raise funds for the purchase of a new ECG machine and it is hoped that the money raised from this event will bring us close to our target.

Staff Training Dates – 2014 - The surgery will be closed on the following afternoons from 1.00 pm until 4.00 pm, 28 October and 19 November.

Saturday 9.00am – 3.00pm

Welton Family Health Centre

At the time of writing we are anticipating the arrival of ‘flu vaccinations and remind anyone in the “at risk” groups to book in as soon as possible for these. A reminder that 2 – 4 year olds are included in the cohort this year and the vaccine is administered to them via a nasal spray. Please do not wait to be contacted by the surgery – book your appointment as soon as possible or advise us if you do not wish to take up this service so that we do not contact you further.

Unfortunately our booking in screen in the waiting room is no longer functional due to external changes in the NHS IT software which have made it incompatible with our IT system and we apologise to those patients affected. We will be discussing the options further with our Patient Group in due course.

Welton Patients and Doctors AssociationI am writing this news for the parish magazines on a lovely warm, sunny Saturday in mid-September. I just hope we are as lucky with the weather on Saturday 18th October – the PDA Autumn Fayre. Items required for sale please, bric a brac, books, bottles or glass items, items suitable for the tombola, wine for the wine or water game or anything else they would like to donate to the event (except clothing) please give me a call (862570) to arrange collection or bring it along on the day. We will be at the Welton Village Hall from 9am to receive your donations so please turn out your cupboards to support a very worthy local cause.

The Fayre opens to the public at 2pm and there is no admission charge.

Two more dates for your diary are Thursday 23rd October when a Doctor from the practice will be giving a talk at the Health Centre starting at 7.30pm to which everyone is invited.

Finally the Christmas Lunch will be held on Friday 5th December.
