Street Furniture
Level 4
Module: DE0828Credits: 30Module Tutor(s): David Parkinson and Ian Hewitt
This project is one of several assignments that make up this module of study.
Objectives
The objective of this project is to enable you to practise and refine concept sketching techniques. Use of perspective and construction lines is crucial in accurately placing an object into a landscape/making it look three dimensional.
Context
In order that your thought process throughout the design cycle is fluid and efficient, you should be confident in your sketching and illustration techniques. It is critical that you are not labouring over the process of sketching but using it as a vehicle for creative thought and concept evaluation. It is not until you are fully confident with the sketching process that you will be able to ‘think’ and ‘create’ with appropriate speed and depth.
The accurate use of construction lines and perspective can help to improve/enhance your own sketching style and there are several techniques/exercises that may help you in doing this.
Assignment
You are to take a picture of a landscape, for example Northumberland Street, and using the perspective of the picture, accurately place a design concept for a piece/pieces of street furniture in the landscape. You will need to print your picture to an appropriate size, and using layout/tracing paper accurately construct perspective lines, and then using construction lines place your street furniture accordingly.
Street furniture can include: Lamp Posts Dustbins Benches Bike Stands Shelters
In order to develop your concept for a piece of street furniture, you will also need to produce many full and vibrant sketch sheets exploring possible forms and practicing perspective drawing techniques and the use of construction lines.

Level 4
Module: DE0828Credits: 30Module Tutor(s): David Parkinson and Ian Hewitt
This project is one of several assignments that make up this module of study.
Submission
You are required to hand in a minimum of six full sketch sheets exploring possible forms for your street furniture, demonstrating attempts at perspective drawing and the use of construction lines.
You are also required to hand in a final sketch of your concept(s) accurately placed in the landscape – this can be on a piece of layout paper that sits on top of your picture or on the actual picture itself if it has been made transparent using Photoshop.
Assessment Criteria
The highest marks will be awarded to projects where; sketch sheets are full, visually exciting, demonstrate appropriate line quality, and also show the critical appraisal and incremental development of your own ideas and abilities with respect to construction lines and using perspective.
Your final assessed mark for this component of your Design Communication module will be an overall grade, awarded during your portfolio review towards the end of the academic year. This review will assess and ‘average’ several projects undertaken throughout the year. This project is one of those to be assessed.
