Second Class work – Week beginning 05 / 05 / 2020 Hi all, I hope you are all well and staying safe. As this is my last week before beginning my maternity leave I would like to take this opportunity to thank you all sincerely for a wonderful year. I have loved every minute of working in Ballygarrett, getting to know you all and above all working with ‘The Dream Team’. The you for the warm welcome & making my year so enjoyable! A special note for the children: Second class, well done on all your hard work this year and all you have achieved. I am extremely proud of you all as I hope you are. Thank you for such a lovely year and for making my job so easy. From your determination and hard work to your laughs and good humour I have loved every minute of being your teacher and could not have hoped for anything more. I know it is disappointing that you won’t be making your First Holy Communion on the 23 rd as planned but try not to worry. When everything returns to normal we will plan a new date for your communion and it will be an extra special day that will be worth the wait! From next week, Ms. O’Sullivan will take over your weekly planning and will be your person of contact for the coming weeks. For this week keep sending your work and questions to me - I do enjoy hearing from you all and seeing the work you have done. I have really enjoyed the photos, projects and letters you have sent to date. Keep up the great work! A big shout out to Alex Crowe and Jim Byrne who are both celebrating their birthday this week. Happy Birthday boys! Have a lovely day and enjoy your day without school work!

Second Class work – Week beginning 05 / 05 / 2020

Hi all,

I hope you are all well and staying safe.

A special note for the children:

Second class, well done on all your hard work this year and all you have achieved. I am extremely proud of you all as I hope you are. Thank you for such a lovely year and for making my job so easy. From your determination and hard work to your laughs and good humour I have loved every minute of being your teacher and could not have hoped for anything more.

I know it is disappointing that you won’t be making your First Holy Communion on the 23rd as planned but try not to worry.

Thank you all again for the lovely, warm welcome to Ballygarrett. It really meant so much!

Take care and stay safe.

Reading

Class novel (read at own individual pace) while engaging with comprehension and reading strategies

Before reading: Predict what is going to happen next.

During reading:

1. Questioning. Include questions to which the answers can be found in the story, as well as ‘I wonder why…’ questions (the class have had lots of practice with this)

2. Find and take note of 5 words that you are unsure of exact meaning.

3. Explore:

· How do you feel about the main character? Why?

· Why does the character act / feel a certain way?

· Does the story make sense to you?

· Can you link or relate anything you have read to your own life? / How does this story remind you of your own life?

After reading:

1. Summarise what you have read.

2. Discuss favourite part of story. Why? Is there anything you don’t like about the story? Why?

3. Use dictionary to find definition of above 5 words. Either write out the definition or put the words into your own sentence to show your understanding.

4. Complete diary entry of character.

5. Sequence events (either orally or pictorially).

* If you have managed to complete Charlotte’s Web. Let me know how you got on with the book and any activities. Please try and keep up your reading by practising the above reading strategies with different books and novels.

** Note: Frys lists available in the learning support section of the school website for those children who had been working on these previously.

Writing

Handwriting book – continue

Creative writing: Poetry

Write a poem about how your daily tasks have changed. I have read lovely emails about all the different things you are doing now that you are not going to school. Some people are helping more at home, or on the farm. Some are baking more or building tree houses and bird feeders. Get creative and write it all in a poem.

Remember how we write poetry in school: Do a word web with all the words we associate with the topic. Do any of them rhyme? How can we structure the sentence to help the rhyming pattern. (I would love to see these)

Oral

Play word tennis using compound words ( see exercise in next section). One person gives the first noun of a compound word and the other person must give the next noun to make a compound word.

Recite a poem: Mr. Nobody by: Anonymous.

https://www.poetryfoundation.org/poems/42914/mr-nobody

Use expression and character to recite this poem. Have fun with it.

Spellings & grammar

Weekly spellings and spelling activity in Spell well.

Spelling websites : https://play.edshed.com/login and https://starspell.app/ (see below)

https://starspell.app/-> choose list -> Curriculum -> Curriculum yr 1 -> new consonant spellings -> click on spell tab below picture

Try to put some of these words into your own sentence.

Grammar: Compound words - when 2 nouns come together to form a new word. E.g. butter is a noun and fly is a noun. When you put them together you get a new word: butterfly.

Come up with as many compound words as you can.

Complete Worksheet 1 & 2 below.

Gaeilge:

Ócaidí Speisialta

1. Go to: https://www.folensonline.ie/registration/ and register in the teachers section using Prim20 as the roll number

(This vocab is all revision for the children. The only new words are Catach – curly and díreach – straight)

lch 116: write the correct word and discuss the picture.

Lch 117: Crossword

4. Resources: When you have page 112 open, in the green tool bar at the bottom you will see the number 6 – click on it to access resouces. (Comhrá, Póstaer, Pléasc an Balún, Luas Cártaí srl.)

There are very good interactive pieces in these resources that I would encourage the children to use – particularly in Comhrá and Póstaer.

Outdoor active learning

GAA:

Revision of ball handling skills: hand passing, kick passes, dribbling (bouncing and solos), kicking to a target/another person, throwing and catching, penalty shoot off (aiming, practising scoring).

Timed challenges: how many hand passes / solos / catches / kick passes can you do in a minute? (children can hand pass to a wall and then catch the ball and repeat if they don’t have a partner to do this with at home)

SPHE

Random act of kindness

Complete one random act of kindness (either for a family member in your house or by making contact with someone you feel might need a chat)

Record your random act of kindness (either pictorially or in writing… or both) in the copy you got home… I look forward to hearing all about these.

Mindfulness

Over the last number of weeks you have spent time being kind to others – now it is time to be kind to yourself.

Take some time out each day to be mindful. Sit quietly for 5 minutes and think about questions such as:

What makes you happy? (Complete happiness journal in your copy – Can you think of 2 things that make you happy today? Draw / write about them)

What are you grateful for?

What are you good at? (Complete worksheet “I am an amazing person”)

What are you learning / practising every day?

Is there anything you are worried about? Who can you talk to? (Complete worry doodle page – below)

Art

Get Creative!

Draw, paint, design or construct a kite.

https://artsycraftsymom.com/10-kite-crafting-ideas-for-kids/

OR

Use your imagination to respond to your English poem Mr. Nobody. Draw, paint or design your favourite scene.

You could make your creation very interesting by adding fabric and fibre for texture. Use scrap material you find at home. (We did this in school for the four seasons.)
