Mrs Murphy – Week beginning 18th May and Week beginning 25th May 2020
Hello to all of my First Class,
I hope you are continuing to keep safe and well. I am thinking of you all everyday and missing you all so much. I especially miss all of your
lovely stories and happy faces.
Some of you sent me emails of your school work, art, baking, gardening, farming and pets. I really love receiving these emails; it makes
me so happy to see photographs of you and your work .You really are working very hard. Continue to send me images of your work or if
you have any queries just email me on [email protected]
Again, I have set new work and activities for the next two weeks. I have provided screenshots from the various books for your
convenience. You can choose activities from the list below; you do not have to get everything done. The main things to focus on are your
reading and keywords, tables and some writing focusing on your spelling and sounds as you write.
Take care and stay safe.
Slán,
Mrs Murphy

SHAPE HUNT - Children can go on a shapes walk around the house or outdoors looking for 3D shapes. Children can record their findings in a variety
of ways, e.g. by drawing pictures, taking photographs, making a slideshow of pictures, writing about the shapes, etc.

Construction - Children can make 3D shapes using plasticine, play dough or márla and cocktail sticks or matches.
Colour by Shape - See worksheets at the end of the document.
What am I? - Use a hat and the 3D shapes labels. Stick a label to the hat. The child wears the hat but cannot see the name of the shape. S/he then
has to question their audience based on the characteristics, e.g. ‘How many faces has it?’ (6) ‘Is it a cuboid?’ (Yes/No) Can it roll? Has it square
faces? etc.
Play ‘Hide a Shape’. Hide a shape, e.g. a cube, in a bag and describe its properties: ‡
‘I have 6 faces which are square. My edges are all straight. I have 8 corners. I cannot roll along the floor. What am I?’
Invite the children to suggest what the hidden shape may be and then to check the answer by removing and examining the shape. Repeat the exercise
for the remaining shapes.
(Variation: Place a shape in a bag and invite a volunteer to close his/her eyes and attempt to identify the shape by feeling/handling it.)
