Brazil is in South America. The countries surrounding Brazil are Peru, Colombia, Chile, Argentina, Bolivia and Venezuela. Brasilia is the capital of Brazil and is located in the centre of the country. Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Salvador are all major cities on the coastline of Brazil.

Environment

The Amazon River is the second longest river in the World. The Amazon Rainforest is the world’s largest tropical rainforest. Almost 15% of the Amazon Rainforest was destroyed by forest fires. The name Brazil comes from a tree named brazilwood.

Population and Language

The population of Brazil is 210 million. The language spoken in Brazil is Portuguese. Some commonly used words are olá (hello), chou (goodbye), obrigado (thank you), por favour (please). Brazil is famous for the Carnival Festival which marks the beginning of Lent.

In the depths of the Amazon rainforest there lives tribes who have no contact with the outside world.

The feijoada is a popular dish in Brazil and is made with black beans and pork. Brazil’s geography makes it ideal for growing coffee beans and citrus fruits like oranges.

The Amazon accounts for one-tenth of all animal species in the world like armadillos and anacondas.

Sport & Tourist Attractions

Brazil is famous for its soccer team with players like Pele, Ronaldo and Ronaldinho. Brazil has won the World Cup five times. No other country has won the World Cup as often.

Brazil’s main tourist attractions are Christ the Redeemer statue, Copacabana beach and Iguazu Falls.
