Service Theme for This Morning

The Christian lives as wheat among weeds as he waits for the harvest. In the Prayer of the Day we ask for the spirit to live like wheat—to think and to do what is right—even while we live in this sinful world. Living with an eye on the coming harvest gives us encouragement, comfort, and hope.

The Opening Hymn No. 21

“Jehovah, Let Me Now Adore Thee”

1 Jehovah, let me now adore Thee,For where is there a God, such, Lord, as Thou? With songs I fain would come before Thee;Oh, let Thy Holy Spirit teach me nowTo praise Thee in His name thro' whom aloneOur songs can please Thee, through Thy blessed Son!

2 O Father, draw me to my SaviorThat Thy dear Son may draw me unto Thee;Thy Spirit guide my whole behaviorAnd rule both sense and reason thus in meThat, Lord, Thy peace from me may ne'er depart,But wake sweet melodies within my heart.

3 Grant that Thy Spirit prompt my praises,Then shall my singing surely please Thine ear;Sweet are the sounds the heart then raises,My prayer in truth and spirit Thou wilt hear.;Then shall Thy Spirit raise my heart to TheeTo sing Thee psalms of praise in high degree.

4 For He can plead for me with sighingsThat are unspeakable to lips like mine;He bids me pray with earnest cryings,Bears witness with my soul that I am Thine,Joint heir with Christ, and thus may dare to say:O heavenly Father, hear me when I pray!

5 When thus my heart in prayer ascendeth,Through Tine own Holy Spirit, unto Thee,Thy heart, O Father, kindly bendethIts fervent love and favor unto me,Rejoicing my petition to fulfilwhich I have made according to Thy will.

6 And what Thy Spirit thus hath taught meTo seek from Thee must needs be such a prayerAs Thou wilt grant, through Him who bought me,And raised me up to be Thy child and heir.In Jesus' name I fearless seek Thy face,And take from Thee, my Father, grace for grace.

Amen.

All:  (♫)   Behold, God is my helper; the Lord is with those who `uphold my soul.

He will repay my enemies `for their evil.

Cut them off in Your truth. Save me, O `God, by Your name,

And vindicate `me by Your strength.

The Collect for the Day.

Grant us, Lord, the spirit to think and do what is right that we, who cannot do anything that is good without you, may by your help be enabled to live according to your will; through Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. (♫) Amen.

The Old Testament Lesson Joel 3:12-16

Let the nations be roused.  Let them advance into the Valley of Jehoshaphat, for there I will be seated to judge all the nations. Swing the sickle, for the harvest is ripe. Come, trample the grapes, for the winepress is full and the vats overflow, because the nations’ wickedness is so great! Multitudes, multitudes in the Valley of Decision! For the Day of the Lord is near in the Valley of Decision. The sun and moon will be darkened, and the stars will stop shining. The Lord will roar from Zion and shout from Jerusalem. The sky and the earth will tremble. But the Lord will be a refuge for his people, a stronghold for the people of Israel.

The Gradual

ALL: (♫) `Alleluia. My Word will not return

`to me empty,

but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it. `Alleluia.

The EpistleRomans 8:26,27

In the same way the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we should pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groans that are not expressed in words.  And he who searches our hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints, according to God’s will.

The GospelJohn 7:14-24

Congr: (♫)Glory be to Thee, O Lord!

When the festival was already half over, Jesus went up to the temple courts and began to teach.  The Jews were amazed and asked, “How does this man know what is written without being instructed?”

Jesus answered them, “My teaching is not mine, but it comes from him who sent me.  If anyone wants to do his will, he will know whether my teaching is from God or if I speak on my own.  The one who speaks on his own is seeking his own glory. But he who seeks the glory of the one who sent him—that is the one who is true, and there is no unrighteousness in him.  Didn’t Moses give you the law? Yet none of you does what the law tells you. Why are you trying to kill me?” “You have a demon!” the crowd answered. “Who is trying to kill you?” Jesus answered them, “I did one work, and you are all amazed.  Consider this: Because Moses has given you circumcision (not that it comes from Moses, but from the fathers), you circumcise a man even on the Sabbath.  If a man receives circumcision on the Sabbath so that the law of Moses may not be broken, are you angry at me because I made a man completely well on the Sabbath?  Stop judging by outward appearance. Instead make a right judgment.”

Pastor: Here ends the Gospel

Congr: (♫)Praise be to Thee, O Christ!

The Nicene Creed Page 22

The Chief HymnNo. 611

"The Day is Surly Drawing Near”

1 The day is surely drawing nearWhen God's Son, the Anointed,Shall with great majesty appearAs Judge of all appointed. All mirth and laughter then shall ceaseWhen flames on flames will still increase,As Scripture truly teacheth.

2 A trumpet loud shall then resoundAnd all the earth be shaken. Then all who in their graves are foundShall from their sleep awaken; But all that live shall in that hourBy the Almighty's boundless pow'rBe changed at His commanding.

3 A book is opened then to all,A record truly tellingWhat each hath done, both great and small,When he on earth was dwelling; And ev'ry heart be clearly seen,And all be known as they have beenIn tho'ts and words and actions.

4 Then woe to those who scorned the LordAnd sought but carnal pleasures,Who here despised His precious WordAnd loved their earthly treasures! With shame and trembling they will standAnd at the Judge's stern commandTo Satan be delivered.

5 O Jesus, who my debt didst payAnd for my sin wast smitten,Within the Book of Life, oh, mayMy name be also written!I will not doubt; I trust in Thee,From Satan Thou hast made me freeAnd from all condemnation.

6 Therefore my Intercessor beAnd for Thy blood and meritDeclare my name from judgment freeWith all who life inherit,That I may see Thee face to faceWith all Thy saints in that blest placeWhich Thou for us hast purchased.

7 O Jesus Christ, do not delay,But hasten our salvation; We often tremble on our wayIn fear and tribulation. Then hear us when we cry to Thee;Come, mighty Judge, and make us freeFrom every evil! Amen.

The Sermon Matthew 13: 24-30, 36-43

He presented another parable to them: “The kingdom of heaven is like a man who sowed good seed in his field.  But while people were sleeping, his enemy came and sowed weeds among the wheat and went away.  When the plants sprouted and produced heads of grain, the weeds also appeared.  The servants of the owner came and said to him, ‘Sir, did you not sow good seed in your field? Where did the weeds come from?’  He said to them, ‘An enemy did this.’ The servants asked him, ‘Do you want us to go and gather up the weeds?’  ‘No,’ he answered, ‘because when you gather up the weeds, you might pull up the wheat along with them.  Let both grow together until the harvest, and at harvest time I will tell the reapers, “First, gather up the weeds, bind them in bundles, and burn them. Then, gather the wheat into my barn.”’” He answered them, “The one who sows the good seed is the Son of Man.  The field is the world. The good seeds are the sons of the kingdom. The weeds are the sons of the Evil One.  The enemy who sowed them is the Devil. The harvest is the end of the world. The reapers are angels.  Therefore, just as the weeds are gathered up and burned with fire, so it will be at the end of the world.  The Son of Man will send out his angels, and they will pull out of his kingdom everything that causes sin and those who continue to break the law.  The angels will throw them into the fiery furnace where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.  Then the righteous will shine like the sun in the kingdom of their Father. Whoever has ears to hear, let him hear.

The Sacrament of the Altar

Good Shepherd practices "closed communion." Closed communion is the Biblical Practice of admitting to communion only those members of the congregation who are in good standing (who confess sin, seek to turn away from it, and trust in Jesus for forgiveness) and those who are completely united with the congregation in faith and understanding.

Closed communion protects those who do not understand the danger of communing without self-examination or without recognizing the presence of the Lord's body and blood with the bread and wine. Therefore, we invite all members in good standing of an ELS or WELS congregation to join in Holy Communion with us, and we ask that all others please refrain and speak to the Pastor. Thank you for respecting our Biblical practice.

The Distribution

The Distribution HymnNo. 306

"Lord Jesus Christ, Thou hast Prepared”

1 Lord Jesus Christ, Thou hast preparedA feast for our salvation,It is Thy body and Thy blood; And at Thy invitationAs weary souls, with sin opprest,We come to Thee for needed rest,For comfort, and for pardon.

2 Although Thou didst to heav’n ascend,Where angel hosts are dwelling,And in Thy presence they beholdThy glory, all excelling,And though Thy people shall not seeThy glory and Thy majestyTill dawns the Judgment morning.

3 Yet, Savior, Thou art not confinedTo any habitation,But Thou art present ev'rywhereAnd with Thy congregation.Firm as a rock this truth shall stand,Unmoved by any daring handOr subtle craft and cunning.

4 We eat this bread and drink this cup,Thy precious Word believingThat Thy true body and Thy bloodOur lips are here receiving. This word remains forever true,And there is naught Thou canst not do;For Thou, Lord, art almighty.

5 Though reason cannot understandYet faith this truth embraces;Thy body, Lord, is everywhereAt once in many places. How this can be I leave to Thee,Thy Word alone sufficeth me,I trust its truth unfailing.

6 Lord, I believe what Thou hast said,Help me when doubts assail me;Remember that I am but dustAnd let my faith not fail me.Thy Supper in this vale of tearsRefreshes me and stills my fearsAnd is my priceless treasure.

7 Grant that we worthily receiveThy Supper, Lord, our Savior,And, truly grieving o’er our sins,May prove by our behaviorThat we are thankful for Thy graceAnd day by day may run our race,In holiness increasing.

8 For Thy consoling Supper, Lord,Be praised throughout all ages!Preserve it, for in every placeThe world against it rages.Grant that this Sacrament may beA blessed comfort unto meWhen living and when dying.

The Closing HymnNo. 446

"Rise, My Soul, to Watch and Pray”

1 Rise, my soul, to watch and pray,From thy sleep awaken;Be not by the evil dayUnawares o'ertaken. For the Foe, Well we know,Oft his harvest reapethWhile the Christian sleepeth.

2 Watch against the devil's snaresLest asleep he find thee; For indeed no pains he sparesTo deceive and blind thee.Satan's prey Oft are theyWho secure are sleepingAnd no watch are keeping.

3 Watch! Let not the wicked worldWith its pow'r defeat thee.Watch lest with her pomp unfurledShe betray and cheat thee.Watch and see Lest there beFaithless friends to charm thee,Who but seek to harm thee.

4 Watch against thyself, my soul,Lest with grace thou trifle;Let not self thy tho'ts controlNor God's mercy stifle.Pride and sin Lurk withinAll thy hopes to scatter;Heed not when they flatter.

5 But while watching, also prayTo the Lord unceasing. He will free thee, be thy Stay,Strength and faith increasing.O Lord, bless In distressAnd let nothing swerve meFrom the will to serve Thee.

6 Therefore let us watch and pray,Knowing He will hear usAs we see from day to dayDangers ever near us,And the end Doth impend--Our redemption nearethWhen the Lord appeareth.

Amen.
