So before we begin can you please introduce yourself ? Tell us, who

you are, and how long have you been creating these wonderful works ofart?

H i ! My name i s Ca r los E . Gomez , a penc i l ler a r t ist f rom Spa in. I have a lways been draw-ing , but I star ted ser iously when I turned 18.

Have you studied in any academies?

Nope, I am self taught ; I researched anatomy books and bur ied myself in comic books.

What are your tools of the trade?

Wel l , basica l ly I use a “Pr isma color copy-not non-photo blue” to sketch out the drawing, a normal 2H penc i l to sketch draw ings that w i l l be inked. and if I want a very clean resu lt a 0,5 2H lead mech-penci l . A lso I use Photoshop to adjust scann ing, clean the drawing etc.

Can you descr ibe your style/styles for the readers who have not seen your work?

Wel l I th ink I star ted out pret t y car toon, but than my st yle changed and got more ser ious as I got involved with Marvel . So I guess my style is Western comic with a smal l touch of cartoon. Let ’s say that Mad f i rst inspired me, than Carlos Pacheco ... and now I creat ing my own style.

Do you conform yoursel f to a certain style, and why?

Wel l I must say I don´t go out of Western style, Manga doesn’t rea l ly catch my at tent ion, I ’ve a lways read superhero comics and it ’s what I most l ike because of the act ion/angles and so.

If you can tel l us i f there is a project were you involved in? And what is it?

Wel l at the moment I am involved i n a fe w proj -ec ts . I just f i n ished Unbeatable I I ( M a t t Wo l f ’ s awesome comic, check it out ! ). A lso I am d raw ing Spect acu l a r Spiderman for Mar ve l UK sporat icly, Ne w Wa r r ior s d i g i t a l com ic for M a r v e l U S A , a hu morous WoW i nspi red com ic for a French publ isher ; Kant ik ( Les aventur iers d e l ´O a k ) . Other than that I basical ly do private commis-sions for people...

Do you prefer f reelance work or do st ick to a specif ic f i rm? Why?

I would l ike to st ick to a specif ic f irm, Marvel concretely but freelance a lways breaks rout ine, so I guess both have its pros and cons.

Where do you draw your inspi rat ion f rom whenever you start to work on a piece?

mmm, I don’t know, usua l ly I just t ake a sheet of paper and start drawing smal l sketches. When I have a few I just take the one I l ike most and carry that idea out .

Do you ha ve any art ist in general that you look up to?

Oh yes, now a days I just love Pacheco and Alex Ross, even though Madureira’s design have a lways fascinated me.

What do you aspire to achieve?

I guess the t ypica l answer f its here. Have a permanent cont ract , be known and l ive an easygoing l i fe w ith no st ress hav ing to work 24/7. Improve my art and create a un ique style, be an inspi rat ion to young ar t ists.

You use web art gal ler ies on the internet to display your art work, do you display your

work any other ways, or even more tradit ional l ike in an art gal lery? Normal ly I display my work at comicons or so, i f not in a comic-book format of course :)

What makes you use the internet to d isplay your ar t work? Wel l it ’s simply easy I guess. It ’s a lso fast and knowing that there are thousands of on l ine users these days makes it even more at t ract ive. It ’s a lso a good way to f ind work , since nowadays ha lf the ed itors scout the web for penci l lers and so.

What do you think about web art gal ler ies? Are they better then other methods of dis-

playing art work?

Wel l as I sa id above, I do th ink they are a qu ick way to get to people, even though I wont deny that the qua l it y of an on l ine image isn’t that good as a non-dig ita l one. I a lso th ink they may lose a bit of the enchantment a persona l ga l lery g ives.

Can you please give us a l ist of l inks for people to f ind your art work?

(Onl ine or addresses) I basica l ly use Deviantart . My personal address there iswww.nemafronspa in.dev iantar t .com . I a lso have my work on other sites, but they are less important .

Did you get any education other then art (for example I have a business degree but love graphic designing)?

I stud ied Animat ion and Mult imedia Design. It ’s basica l ly learn ing how to make webpages, f lash, interact ive CDs, and so... but from a l l I learnt I on ly use my Photoshop knowledge da i ly.

If you had any t ips for people that are just start ing to create art w h a t would it be?

I wou ld say read a l lot of comics, or whatever you want to draw. Ded icate A LOT of t ime to it , get inspi red and pract ice pract ice pract ice. Study basic anatomy and then exaggerate proport ions! It a l l depends on what you want to do, but remember; t ry to f ind your own style! . oh and btw, I have a tutor ia l that might help you guys :)

So b e f o r e w e b e g i n c a n y o u p l e a s e i n t r o d u c e y o u r s e l f ? Te l l u s , w h o

y o u a r e , a n d h o w l o n g h a v e y o u b e e n c r e a t i n g t h e s e w o n d e r f u l w o r k s o fart?

My name is Ceci l ia Gago, current ly 20 years old, and I was born in a country in South America ca l led Venezuela; and I have been drawing for approx imately 5 years or so now. I do it for fun and always try to learn more about different ways of improving the f ields I lack.

Have you studied in any academies?

Apart from the ar t classes schools offer as a regu lar cred it that one must obta in I have not taken any other t ype of ar t learn ing.

What are your tools of the trade?

My tools of t rade are pret ty easy to obta in. The th ings you need are regu lar ba l l point pens, Copic markers, Pr ismacolors, wh ite out , water-colors, sharpie markers, and of course an art ist ’s best fr iend, Photoshop.

Can you describe your style/styles for the read-ers who have not seen your work?

I wouldn’t consider to rea l ly hav ing a st yle, but I g uess i f one were to categor i ze it t hen colorfu l and sh iny?

Do you conform yoursel f to a cer tain style, and why?

When I do commissions I do tend to st ick to the same style because when I have many requests to draw that is the best way to make fast work.

If you can tel l us i f there is a project were you involved in? And what is it?

I am current ly not involved in any projects, but I ’m a lways free for the idea of col laborat ing with another ar t ist to make a project .

Do you prefer f reelance work or do st ick to a specif ic f i rm? Why?

I most ly do freelance work. It is easier that way.

Where do you draw your inspi rat ion f rom whenever you start to work on a piece?

Inspi rat ion l i ke many say comes f rom the mood we are in at that moment when we are cre-at ing the piece. I have to say most of my pieces go that way as wel l . My drawings wi l l come out bet ter when I am in anger for some reason, is as if I have to prove a point so I g ive it my a l l , I know most people say when they feel sad or when they are bored is when they draw the most .

Do you have any ar t ist in genera l that you look up to?

The ar t ist I have looked up to for years now is Kaoru-chan, she is a Deviantart ar t ist and her works are just to d ie for

What do you aspire to achieve?

In al l honesty I don’t th ink I wi l l ever make a career out of drawing an ime, because I’m not sk i l led enough to ach ieve the goal of perfect ion. R ight now I do it to get ext ra side money to buy more of the utensi ls I ment ioned earl ier. I wi l l a lways draw as a hobby.

So b e f o r e w e b e g i n c a n y o u p l e a s e i n t r o d u c e y o u r s e l f ? Te l l u s , w h o

y o u a r e , a n d h o w l o n g h a v e y o u b e e n c r e a t i n g t h e s e w o n d e r f u l w o r k s o f art?

My name is Cindy Grundsten. I l ive in Sweden in a town ca l led Esk i lstuna. Not so far from the capital city Stockholm. For three years ago, autumn 2007 I got an old computer from my daughter with an old Photoshop Element. I remember I loved to play with th is program, but I cou ld not anyth ing about Photoshop or ed it ing. I wanted to learn a l l the tools so I joined a group on internet to learn more about it . It was so fun, and I star ted to ed it my own photos. In 2008 I thought I wanted to learn more so I joined Dev iantar t . When I saw a l l the wonderfu l ar ts I a lmost cr ied. How cou ld anyone possible create such a beaut ifu l ar t? I sad to myself. And I decided to learn.

Have you studied in any academies?

To learn about Photoshop I study on distance once. It was on ly the basic Photoshop. But it was fun and helpfu l .

What are your tools of the trade?

I have Photoshop CS3, and I have a Wacom Intous 3 tablet . I a lso have a very good and strong computer w it h a l lot of work memor y so t hat Photoshop can run good. And a f lat screen, 24 inches.

Can you describe your style/styles for the read-ers who have not seen your work?

My style, wel l I am very scared to stuck in the same style. I love to t r y d ifferent st yles. It helps me to keep my inspi rat ion and imag inat ion a l ive. But I love to make fun, romant ic and happy images with beaut ifu l colors.

If you can tel l us i f there is a project were you involved in? And what is it?

I have done some CD -covers, a lot of work to models and photographer for por tfol ios. I have worked on a ca lendar. But most ly is it project with models and photographers.

Do you prefer f reelance work or do st ick to a specif ic f i rm? Why?

I th ink I prefer f ree lance work , and then I am f ree to do d i f fe rent t h i ng s and d i f fe rent projects.

Where do you draw your inspiration from when-ever you start to work on a piece?

It’s very different actual ly. Somet imes I just see a photo of a model , an imal or maybe a wonderfu l place, and th ings star t to happened in my head. And dur ing the t ime I work more and more ideas comes up.

Do you have any art ist in general that you look up to?

Oh yes I have for sure. There are so many many wonderfu l ar t ists as I l ike and admire. I can’t tel l the number of it , it ’s too many. But there is one very very specia l art ist . And he’s work is so specia l to me. I can look at h is art for hours and it touches my heart so deeply. His name is JohndeLano. And you can f ind his gal lery on Deviantart here . When I f i rst join Deva intar t I found h im r ight away. He rea l ly is someth ing specia l .

What do you aspire to achieve?

Well, actual ly I love to create art. Create is my l ife. But of course I want to be bet ter and bet ter. And that is one of my goa ls. My wish is a lso to become so good that I have the opportun it y to work with a l l the t ime. I t r ied once. And star ted up a smal l business. But it is d iff icu lt because an image takes so long to do. And you can not charge the pr ice that would be needed to make a l iv ing of it . So now I’m just create for my own joy. But of course I st i l l do commissions.

You use web ar t ga l ler ies on the internet to d isplay your ar t work , do you d isplay your

work any other ways, or even more traditional l ike in an art gal lery?

Only once in a hospit a l . There was a sma l l d isplay in a hospita l , and my ch i ld work is st i l l hang ing at the ch i ldren’s room at th is hospita l . I th ink it ’s a big honor for me that they wanted to keep it there for the ch i ldren.

What makes you use the internet to d isplay your art work?

Internet has become the place where you can reach out everywhere. The Internet can prove to the world. And I th ink that ’s good.

If you had any t ips for people that are just start-ing to create art what would it be?

Some t ips for those who want to lea rn how to create d ig ita l images. But f i rst ... do you love to create? Are you happy and inspi red when you create? Then you have the basics to become an accompl ished art ist . Create for your own sake, not for others. Never t r y to imitate any other ar t ist , f ind your own style. What is you. If you join an ar t ist , don’t see it as a compet it ion. A l l are at d if-ferent levels in their learn ing. And a l l are work ing at thei r own pace. Be a n ice person and support other. It is not who are important but qua l it y, so take your t ime when you create, and feel inside when it ’s f in ished and when you are pleased with your work.

Do not g ive up, pract ice and f ind solut ions, read the tutor ia ls . There are many good tutor ia ls on the net where you can learn d ifferent techn iques. Do not be af ra id to ask . There a re a l so many forums on the net that you can part ic ipate in to bee a good help.

This is art; let your imagination run wild. If the neigh-bor does not l ike what you do, ignore it. It is YOU who create, and it is YOU who wi l l l ike what you create. When you create someth ing you do not l ike, the resu lt wi l l not be good. It is your feel ing when you create that determines the outcome and feel ing of the picture.
