DAY TO DAY MAINTENANCEWith today’s advances in wood flooring stains and finishes, cleaning and maintaining your wood floors has never been easier. In fact, properly finished hardwoods are the easiest of all flooring surfaces to maintain.

Please use the microfiber dusting pad provided by Kimminau Floors to sweep your floors regularly. Dirt and grit will damage your hardwood floor by scratching the surface. If a microfiber dusting pad is not available, we recommend sweeping with a soft bristle broom or vacuuming with a soft brush attachment. In the event an accidentoccurs, wipe up spills immediately with a slightly dampened cloth.

PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCEIn addition to the regular day to daymaintenance tips listed above, we also recommend the following preventative measures. These tips will extend the life of your floors by lengthening the intervals between re-surfacing your floor. Here’s our list of Dos and Don’ts to keep your wood floor looking and performing well for generations:

• DON’T use oil soaps, liquid or paste wax, or other products containing lemon, citrus, tung oil, or silicon to clean floors. Self-polishing acrylic waxes cause wood to become slippery and appear dull quickly.

• DO use throw rugs both inside and outside doorways, in front of your kitchen appliances, or any other high traffic areas. This will help prevent grit, dirt, and other debris from being tracked in and scratching the floor. Please clean these rugs on a regular basis.

• DON’T use area rugs until the floor finish has had time to fully cure. The cure times can vary depending on the chosen finish but a minimum of 7 days is required for all finishes.

• DO use felt pads/soft fabric glides

on the bottom of all furniture legs to prevent scuffing and scratching. Replace these often as dirt and debris can become imbedded on the pad and act like sand paper on the flooring surface.

• DON’T wet-mop or steam mop a wood floor. Water and steam can dull the finish and even damage the wood.

• DO wipe up spills immediately with a slightly dampened cloth.

• DON’T wax or oil a polyurethane finished floor.

• DO keep your dog’s nails trimmed to minimize surface scratches. Even the hardest commercial finishes offered will scratch.

• DON’T walk on your wood floors with sports cleats and high heels. A 125-pound woman walking in high heels with an exposed heel nail can exert up to 8,000 pounds per square inch. This kind of impact can dent any floor surface.

• DO use a humidifier throughout the winter/dryer months to minimize gaps. Maintaining consistent humidity levels year round will minimize expansion in the summer months and contraction in the winter months.

• DON’T slide, roll, drag, or scoot anything like furniture or appliances across your hardwood floors. If you’re unable to pick-up and move the item, please use a dolly or cart with inflatable tires.

• DO use protective window coverings to block fade-causing UV rays and excessive heat from direct sunlight. Most wood types will gradually age when not covered, so it’s a good idea to rearrange rugs and furniture periodically to help it age evenly.
