Why iPads…Why iPads…

iPads are a popular technology device, also known as a tablet, that allows users to quickly browse the internet, read information, listen to music, look at pictures, download music, books, movies, and other items, and to interact with millions of applications (also known as apps).

The use of iPads is different for personal use than for educational- this is the reason we have come together to discuss the ways to use the iPads in the media center and classrooms.

Standards for the Standards for the 2121stst-Century Learner-Century Learner

The American Association of School Librarians gives us the starting point and reasons why we should incorporate new technology into our media programs and classrooms.

“Today’s students need to develop information skills that will enable them to use technology as an important tool for learning, both now and in the future” (AASL, 2007).

The ISTE (International Society for Technology in Education) has written a set of standards for educational technology.

Set of standards for administrators, educators, and students. Media specialists who become familiar with these standards and cover the standards will be incorporating technology the way expected.

We, as media specialists, must educate teachers and staff on standards and expectations in order for them to teach those same expectations to students. Media specialists are also responsible for teaching these skills to students.

In’s and Out’s of the In’s and Out’s of the iPadsiPads

The best way to learn about a new piece of technology is through hands on learning- trial and error.

Do not be scared of the iPads. Be careful when handling them, but these are tools for us to use and become comfortable when using. Use your neighbors for questions or misunderstandings, this will be an interactive hands-on activity that will allow you to follow along with us and get to know the device.

Time for questions and concerns on exactly what you want to know when it comes to these devices.

Time for sharing what media specialists learned during their hands on time.

iPrismiPrism

iPrism is the filtering system we will be using on the iPads. Teachers will be given their log in information and this is what students will use to log in also.

Teachers will be responsible for content viewed and mishaps to the devices. Be firm when explaining this to teachers and monitor teacher and student’s use of the devices in the classroom. This would be a perfect time for collaboration.
