From the Deputy Principal Attendance at School We are concerned about the number of students who are arriving late. Arriving late into class even if it is only a few minutes late can be disruptive to the class and unsettling for the student. The first bell is 8.45am which is when students collect their bags in the hall area and make their way to class. When the second bell rings at 8.50am students are ready to begin lessons and the roll is marked. Students who arrive after this time are to go to the office accompanied by their parent to receive a late slip. If pick up arrangements for your child at the end of the day change due to an emergency we ask that you phone the school by 2.00pm at the latest to have the message passed on. This will ensure that the office staff have sufficient time to inform your child. Afternoon pick up arrangements should be communicated to your child before they leave for school to avoid unnecessary calls to the office in the afternoon. Reminders at Parade Last Friday students were given the following reminders:

• Improved behaviour is required from some students as they wait in the hall before school. Contact will be made with Parents/Carers of students who are repeating causing disruption and ignoring school rules.

• Incidents of rough play and injuries that occur during playtime must be reported to the school staff on duty. It is important that we are informed of inappropriate behaviour, and also that first aid is provided if needed.

Your support in discussing and reinforcing these expectations with your child/ren is appreciated. Community Breakfast & Harmony Day Our Community Breakfast and Harmony Day activities will take place on Friday March 22 . The breakfast will commence from 7.30am. This will be followed by our Harmony Day Parade.

• Students are encouraged to wear a range or their national dress on the day.

• Each year level will take part in a Harmony Day related parade item.

• A Gold Coin donation for the breakfast will be collected on the day.

If you are able to help with setting up or serving at the breakfast please email [email protected] Regards, Edna Galea

6B shared with the parade the importance of showing RESPECT, being able to NEGOTIATE, having and demonstrating TRUST, showing ENCOURAGEMENT, SUPPORT and EMPATHY, and being able to LISTEN. When one of these building blocks is missing, relationships are not effective and conflict can arise. A very important message. Thank you to 6B and Mrs Lindley.

Curriculum at Wavell Heights SS

Supporting your child’s learning. Our school vision is Every Student Matters

Homework is underway for Term 1. Class Teachers have communicated the year level expectations in the Term 1 Curriculum Newsletter and at the Parent Information Session. We recognise the value of homework from an early age but also have an understanding that there must be a balance with other outside of school activities such as, sport, involvement in The Arts, and playtime. Good communication between home and school will ensure that your child’s learning is optimised. Homework is a valuable link between school and home. Please make contact with your child’s teacher if there is a problem with the level of homework or an issue around having it completed by the return date. At Wavell Heights SS, our homework policy is to:

• Revise, practise and reinforce work done at school. • Prepare and collect materials to be used in class. • Provide opportunities for parents to support their children’s learning. • Provide additional opportunities to develop skills essential for secondary

school and later life such as reading for pleasure, reading the newspaper, reading for research and using digital technologies.

Please find below a year level guide for homework time and activities. Sending home, return times and activities may vary across classes.

Regards, Edna Galea

Behaviour at Wavell Heights SS HIGH FIVE PROGRAM

What is High Five? It is an effective strategy to develop problem–solving strategies for our students. As a whole school approach it can also help to reduce bullying. It is a 5 step problem solving strategy that can be used in the classroom, in the playground and for perceived bullying incidents. How we implement High Five:

The High Five program is implemented throughout the year in each classroom to reinforce the strategies for students to use. All steps are modelled and taught through role play. High Five charts are visible in all classrooms and throughout the school and staff refer to it when reflecting on how students handled a difficult situation with another student.

In weeks 5 and 6 we will introduce the High 5 approach to all students in classrooms. We will then unpack, discuss and model the Ignore and Talk Friendly strategies.

You can help us at home by speaking with your children about the High 5 and how they can use them at school.
