School Shoes - Important Reminder

Just a reminder that school shoes are required to be plain black - preferably leather (try not to have white/coloured logos and soles). Please ensure that your child is in correct school uniform at all times. We are renown around the district for having our students look brilliant. People who visit our school regularly comment on how great our students look compared to other schools. We have a lovely uniform, which all students should be wearing with pride.Children who are talented enough to represent our school in swimming, athletics and cross country as well as our PSSA teams wear fantastic team uniforms. We thank you for your support.

This was a sensational day of fun, competition and participation. The ability to swim is massively important and I was impressed with the talents of many of our children. We do have a large number of students who have difficulty swimming or avoid attending carnivals because they can’t swim. I encourage all parents/carers to make this a priority as it could save your child’s life.I do want to congratulate the boys and girls who entered races. It was very impressive to see so many children trying their best. I do want to point out that we did have swimming judges monitoring correct stroke, correct finish etc. However, as we are encouraging participation we don’t tell every child who was disqualified as we are mindful of

children’s self-esteem. Basically, we want our children to be having fun and participating. The drawback in doing this is that we run the risk of a child thinking they won a race and believing they will receive a ribbon. The place ribbons will be presented in the near future. Well done boys and girls.A huge congratulations to Mrs Moore and Mr Geary for their very smooth organisation and to all staff and parent volunteers for their efforts on the day in the heat.Congratulations to the following age champions and runners up. You are very talented!

Child SafetySupervision for students in our playground commences at 8:30am. Please ensure your child does not arrive prior to that time. Remember our onsite WOOSH facility provides before school care for our parent’s convenience. Please be extremely careful when arriving or departing school both on foot or by car. Please abide by the parking signs around our school for the safety of our children. Healthy FoodPlease ensure your child has food and a drink bottle for recess and lunch. Please ensure your child has had enough to eat before they arrive at school. We have noticed some children accessing sugary snacks before 9:00am in the playground. This is not an ideal start to the day and doesn’t assist with productive learning. We would also love it if we could train our students to keep their rubbish in their lunch boxes to be disposed of at home in an attempt to keep our playground beautiful and free of litter. Your support with this idea would be greatly appreciated.Three Way MeetingsThese will be held in Weeks 4 and 5. Bookings for student/parent/teacher meetings will be online. Booking instructions have been sent home in a note. The idea is for parents to meet the class teacher, develop a relationship, learn about class expectations, educational and social goals for the year, upcoming grade events and pass on relevant information about, academic, social and/or medical requirements that will

School Activity Permission Notes and Payment - IMPORTANTPermission notes and money for school activities and excursions must be paid in full, one week prior to the excursion or event. If you are experiencing financial hardship you may contact Mr Osborne to organise a payment plan well before notes and payments are due.The reason for this is for the safety and wellbeing of the students attending the activity.Activity/Excursion organisers complete a risk assessment for every excursion. We have many students who require adjusted supervision, medication or care. One week’s knowledge of exactly who is attending the activity gives school staff time to ensure SLSO’s have been reallocated, work is prepared and appropriate supervision is planned for those students not attending etc.Parents/Caregivers will have to be organised to make payment and return permission notes one week prior to all events. Teachers will remind students regularly. We are committed to establishing and maintaining the safest procedures aligned to the Department of Education policies for the wellbeing of our students. For excursions that have limited numbers we send out a notification to advise when payment/deposit will be required. This ensures all students have an equal opportunity to attend these events.Thank you in advance for your cooperation and understanding.

assist your child and teacher.Supported Learning will host review meetings very soon and will receive a separate invitation. Kindergarten will hold meetings in Weeks 9 and 10. Year 6 ShirtsNotes have been given to Year 6 students who want to order a Year 6 shirt in the second and final order. Please return these by Wednesday 17 February so the order can be placed. Thank you, Mr Nicholson for coordinating the design and the ordering. They look spectacular.School Supplies Years K - 6The cost of the school supplies fee will be $20 for each child. This is a very small amount of money to pay and I’m hoping all parents/caregivers can pay this amount this year. Every child will receive a note. Eftpos facilities are available for your convenience. Label Everything PleasePlease clearly label everything your child brings to school. This includes items such as HATS, bags, lunch boxes, drink bottles, JUMPERS. EVERYTHING! I had a lost bag for a few hours last week. It was brand new with new lunch box, pencil case and drink bottle. None of the items had a name on it. Please be reminded on any given day we could have 658 hats, 658 bags, 658 jackets or jumpers and 658 drink bottles. Our lost property container already has several unnamed items in it.Aboriginal Education Consultative Group (AECG) MeetingYesterday, we hosted the first AECG meeting for the year. It was in person and via Zoom in our school library.

Without Their Friends? In 13 plus years of education, your child will eventually find themselves in a class without their close friends. It’s normal for them to initially feel a little anxious about this, so how should you handle it? Don’t rob your child of this opportunity to develop social skills. School is a place where our kids learn important social skills as well as academic ones. Finding their place and making friends in a new group is a vital skill to develop and one they’ll rely on their entire lives. The classroom is one of the gentlest places to start learning this because: Teachers turn a “bunch of kids” into a team every year. They keep an eye out for students who aren’t mixing in, and create opportunities to pair them up with different children. There’s still recess, lunch and sport time to play with their mates It’s also a great opportunity for them to learn about separating social time and work time. Lots of their classmates are in the same boat. Everyone is starting a new year, with a new teacher and a new classroom and many will be looking for new friendships too. Some kids choose a new “best friend” in every class they have, which builds a rich network of friendships over the years. Children learn different skills from different classmates. These days there are lots of opportunities for group work in class, when students team up and work through tasks together. Unlikely pairings can produce excellent workmates, who share a common language of learning and help each other along.

Cameron Osborne

Health Care Needs and EmergencyIf your child has a serious health condition I would ask that you ensure we have an up to date health care plan.We also need all parents to continually update contact details if phone numbers or addresses change at any time.BandLearning an instrument is a fantastic talent. We do have musical instrument tuition on Tuesday mornings. Lessons commenced on Tuesday. However, it is not too late to join. Please contact the school office if you require further information. Student Birthday CakesDue to the Covid situation we will continue not having home cooked cakes or cupcakes etc. or any store bought cake that requires cutting up. Please send in wrapped items such as ice blocks, chocolate bars etc. We can have store bought cupcakes if the teacher distributes these.P&C MeetingOur first P&C meeting for the year is this evening via Zoom commencing at 6:30pm. Using Zoom allows for an easier way for parents to attend and participate. It means your children can be in their home environment probably doing homework or cooking dinner while the parents are working on ways to improve our school. Please email Sarsha Walker on [email protected] or the Zoom link. We’d love to have new parents join and increase our numbers. A P&C volunteers note went to the eldest in every family this week.

Respectful, Responsible,

ResilientWhat are Wauchope Wonders and Class

Dojo?

Your child may have come home and told you that they are earning Class Dojo points in class or may have even received some Wauchope Wonders! Wauchope Wonders are ‘reward tickets’ that teachers give to students in class and on the playground to reward and acknowledge positive behaviour. Wauchope Wonder time with Mr Osborne and our School Leadership team is a popular event every Friday over our in-school P.A system! All Wauchope Wonders from the week go into a draw. Names from each grade are drawn and the lucky winners receive an ice-cream from Mr Osborne!Class Dojo is an in-class reward and acknowledgment system that all teachers are learning to use this year. Every student has a digital ‘dojo monster’ who earns points for positive classroom behaviour.

Both systems are used to encourage and promote our school expectations!
