This is the last

newsletter of the

school year. MIS

wishes everyone a

safe and fun

summer!

Planning for the 2017-2018 school year is now in progress and

we would like to inform you of the class offerings available to 6th

grade students. Required courses for all students include

language arts (two periods), math, science, social studies,

physical education/health, and study hall. Exploratory courses

that rotate every nine weeks include Art, Digital Citizenship,

Music, Real World Writing, and Engineering Lab.

Some students, however, due to academic needs as identified

through various assessments, progress monitoring data and

classroom performance, will be required to enroll in either

Math or Reading RtI (Response to Intervention) instead of being

enrolled in elective classes. These RtI classes are specifically

designed to support student needs and accelerate learning in

the given academic area.

Those students identified as participating in RtI will have their

performance reviewed on an ongoing basis. If a student has

successfully met the academic expectations of the Math or

Reading RtI course, they may be transitioned into the

exploratory rotation.

Attached is a description of each elective course, (please see

page 2 of this newsletter) outlining general information about

what will be taught in the class. Students will be assigned for

exploratory courses using the PowerSchool scheduling program

and will participate in four of the five offerings. If your child

chooses band they will not be assigned to any of the

exploratory courses and will have band as their elective class

every day.

FINE ARTS ROTATION CLASSES

ART

Students in 6th grade Art class will have the opportunity to explore a variety of ways of creating art.

We will work to improve drawing and painting skills while also experiencing printmaking, clay and

other sculptural materials. You will learn about art and artists around the world, as well as in your

own back yard!

DIGITAL CITIZENSHIP

Students will learn what it means to be a digital citizen and the responsibilities that come along with

this role. The course will focus on the student's personal relationship with their technology as well as

their relationships with peers and the world through the use of technology. Skills will be developed in

managing their personal data, working collaboratively in an online community, and using technology

to connect with a larger audience to serve their community.

MUSIC

A major focus of Music class consists of learning to play the piano and guitar. Each student is assigned

a keyboard and guitar to play. By the time a student leaves music class, he/she will be able to play

several songs on both the piano and guitar. Students will be introduced to the instruments of the

orchestra, as well as being exposed to famous composers such as Beethoven, Mozart and

Tchaikovsky, and listen to some of their well-known music.

REAL WORLD WRITING

Students will learn to make their point and prove it through the written word! In this class students

will voice their opinions, analyze and compare different pieces of text, use technology to produce and

publish pieces of writing, and learn to extract textual evidence to support claims. The skills taught in

this class will help students in school and prepare them for the types of writing they will need to

succeed in the "real world".

ENGINEERING LAB

During this 9-week course, students in Engineering Lab (E-Lab) will tackle real-world engineering

problems using the Engineering Design Process (EDP) along with creativity and collaboration. Students

will be immersed in an eight-step process where they will define a problem, brainstorm solutions,

develop prototypes, iterate on their designs and communicate their solutions to solve problems not

only in engineering, but also in other areas of their lives.
