The language we use to assess how well children are achieving in school each year has changed, with the removal of

National Curriculum Levels.

Children at our school are assessed in many different ways and in many different areas of learning. Every day

teachers use a range of observation, questioning and other techniques to gain an understanding of a child’s learning

at any given point in time. Every day, this valuable information is then used to help teachers plan lessons within the

curriculum, that are needed to consolidate prior learning and extend to the next stage, when each child is ready.

A tracking system is used in school which reflects the standards required of the New National Curriculum and is

used to measure where a child is working in relation to the Programme of Study for their Year group. This

‘snapshot’ of information is gathered half-termly and shared with Parents formally at Consultation Evenings in

Autumn, Spring and Summer and in the Mid-year and End of year report.

However, discussions about your child’s progress within a Programme of Study, or any other questions you may

have about your child’s progress, are of course welcome at any time during the year. Contact teacher/Drop in

sessions.

Key Stage 1 SATs consist of formal assessments in Maths, Reading and

Writing and take place in May 2017.

Children starting Year 2 in September 2016 and beyond will need to be

prepared for the KS1 SATs in 2017.

Reading

There will be two separate papers with fiction, non-fiction and poetry. Children will

be expected to answer questions about what they have read.

Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar

There will be three papers. One will assess children’s grammar and punctuation,

one will be a short writing task and one will be a spelling test. Handwriting will also

be assessed.

Maths

There will be two papers. One will be a mental maths test and one will be a written

paper assessing their problem solving skills.

The new-style KS1 SATs are due to be administered in May 2017.

Although the tests are set externally, they will be marked by teachers within the school. Instead of the old national curriculum levels, children will be given a standardised score.

Teacher assessment will also be used to build up a picture of your child’s learning and achievements. In addition, your child will receive an overall result saying whether they have achieved the required standard in the tests.

Other national curriculum subjects, including English writing, speaking and listening, science and computing, will be assessed by your child’s teacher based on work throughout the year.
