We also worked with Peninsula Township to plant 74trees in the Pellizari Natural Area, a new 63-acre park. Species include maple, tulip, spruce and serviceberry.

We also partnered with the City of Traverse City to plant 56 trees. Street trees are especially important for intercepting rain water and improving water quality; they provide canopy over impervious streets and sidewalks. Traverse City has more than 120 runoff outfalls to Grand Traverse Bay, the Boardman River and Kids Creek, so reducing runoff from streets is particularly important.

Coming up in 2012: planting 1,300 seedlings in the bottomlands of Brown Bridge pond. See article about Brown Bridge dam removal on pages 4 and 5.

Planting trees is the most rewarding part of our Water-shed Forestry Initiative. This year we planted more than800 trees along the Boardman River, in Pellizari NaturalArea on Old Mission Peninsula and in Traverse City.

We partnered with the Grand Traverse ConservationDistrict to plant more than 700 saplings along the Board-man River bottomlands near Lone Pine trail this year. That makes more than 1,200 trees planted along theBoardman in 2010 and 2011! Species include white pine, red maple, tamarack and red osier dogwood. This planting was funded by the Oleson Foundation.

These new trees will prevent erosion, absorb runoff, and filter nutrients and sediments to improve water quality.

Bryant Park Runoff Improvements We’ve partnered with the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality and the City of Traverse City to upgrade a runoff drain in Bryant Park. Funding comes from EPA’s Great Lakes Restoration Initiative.

The storm drain cap on the old system would often blow off during a rain, allowing runoff to flood the beach and flow right into West Bay. A brand new storm drain lid was installed and all the old piping was replaced so the lid no longer blows off during rain storms. A new runoff filtration system will be installed in spring 2012 that will decrease the amount of bacteria and other pollutants entering the bay. "The goal of this project is to reduce beach closures at Bryant Park due to high E.Coli counts, and to also remove this beach from Michigan's Impaired Waters list," said Sarah U'Ren, Program Director.

Rotary, EPA Funding Provides Muscle Thanks to the support of generous folks like you, we’ve increased our membership by a whopping 80percent since 2009! A generous three-year $98,000capacity building grant from Rotary Charities of Traverse City gave us the muscle we needed for effective fund-raising and public outreach. Expanding our donor base and funding sources in turn empowers us to better protect our Up North waters for future generations.

We also received $2.2 million from the U.S. EPA to install improved runoff filtration systems in Traverse Cityand Suttons Bay, and to manage sediments as two damsare removed on the Boardman River. This funding isfrom the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative.

More than 95 percent of this funding will be invested in on-the-ground projects in local communities. “We are honored to be awarded these critically needed funds to protect our vital water resources,” said Andy Knott, Executive Director. “Grand Traverse Bay and its 1,000-square-mile watershed are the foundation of our region’s economy and our Up North quality of life.”

The Traverse City project involves working with the City of Traverse City to install a runoff filtering system at East Bay Park to reduce bacterial contamination at the beach. “The ultimate goal is to remove East Bay Park from Michigan’s Impaired Waters list,” said Sarah U’Ren, Program Director.

The Suttons Bay project involves working with the Village of Suttons Bay to install runoff drain systems using green infrastructure techniques. The new drain systems will also eliminate bacteria sources originating from storm drains at the Village’s two heavily used family swimming beaches.

The Boardman dams project will manage sediment to protect aquatic habitat during removal of Brown Bridge and Sabin dams. “These funds provide a significant boost to the largest river restoration project in Michigan,” said Knott. See related article on pages 4 and 5.

Restoring a River,Building Prosperity

gtbay.org4 gtbay.org 5

The largest river restoration in Michigan’s history is happening right here in the Grand Traverse Bay water-shed. Removing Brown Bridge, Boardman and Sabin dams on the Boardman River will restore more than three river miles of native coldwater fish habitat, more than 250 acres of wetlands and nearly 60 acres of upland habitat.

The Watershed Center is integrally involved in two col-aborative efforts for the future of the Boardman River and its watershed. First, we’re part of a team of conservation organizations and government agencies focused on dam removal. We received $533,000 in EPA Great Lakes Restoration Initiative funding to manage sediment removal as the Brown Bridge and Sabin dams are dismantled. Managing sediment will protect aquatic habitat. This is critical; if excess sediments flow downstream, they could suffocate aquatic insects that provide food for fish.

Secondly, we are managing the development of an unprecedented new watershed plan that will establish a blueprint for the stewardship, economic well-being and quality of life of the Boardman River watershed. By in-tegrating economic, social and environmental objectives, this Prosperity Plan will serve as a model for long-term stewardship of critical watersheds throughout Michigan and the nation. The plan also builds on the success of the Grand Vision and will result in on-the-ground projects that support the Grand Vision’s guiding principles.

The Prosperity Plan is being led by a diverse team of partners: the Watershed Center, Grand Traverse Conser-vation District, Traverse City Area Chamber of Commerce, Traverse City Downtown Development Authority, Kalkaska Downtown Development Authority, Charter Township of Garfield, Traverse Area Association of Realtors, Grand Traverse Regional Land Conservancy, Rotary Camps and Services, Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians Natural Resources Department, and Conservation Resource Alliance.

The Boardman is a significant resource in our region. It is the second largest tributary to Grand Traverse Bay, supplying 30 percent of its surface water. The Boardman is also hailed as a Blue Ribbon trout stream, being one of the top 10 trout streams in Michigan.

The Boardman’s watershed is extremely diverse. It runs through some of the wildest and most urbanized parts of our region. It provides many benefits to our fresh-water community while facing many challenges. A com-munity-driven plan will celebrate benefits and address challenges for the long-term health of the watershed.

Water dawdowns have begun for the ultimate disman-tling of Brown Bridge dam. If you’ve recently enjoyed a hike in Brown Bridge Quiet Area, you’ve likely seen manyexposed tree stumps and a newly forming river channel, complete with new rapids. This surreal scenery is part of the magic of seeing a river reborn.
