Through these scholarships, students without financial means to pay have explored drawing, ceramics, mixed media, painting, photography, print-making and welding. In addition to these funded classes, Water Street Studios also offers Art Flow, an afterschool art program. Art Flow provides art activities to pre-K through 8th grade students at Batavia Apartments and reaches area high school students every Thursday afternoon at Water Street Studios. All of these programs exemplify our mission to bring art education and appreciation to all residents of the Fox Valley area. ■ My Life in CartoonsOnce merely considered a child’s past time, cartoons have become a legitimate form of expression for adults. The graphic novel has proven a powerful vehicle for expressing a dramatic story with depth and social significance. This class centers on the writing and drawing of an original autobiography in cartoon form. In addition to lessons on narrative breakdown, story development, character development, and page layout, students will read and discuss the popular biographical graphic novels Maus by Art Spiegelman and Persepo-lis by Marjane Satrapi (among others). Students will simultaneously write and draw an autobiographical or biographical story. These loosely structured sessions are designed to allow indi-vidual interpretation and practice. A facilitator will be present to provide feedback and critique, as well as discussion of basic principles of gesture, proportion, line quality, contour, light and shadow, and positive and negative space. Please note that space is limited, so if you choose paint as your medium, keep your set-up as compact as possible! You will need

Printmaking Equipment for these classes was made possible through a grant from the Kane County Riverboat program.

■ Linocut Collage Lab (Ages 12+)Linocut is a variant of woodcut in which the relief printing matrix is made of softer linoleum. A design is drawn onto the surface which is then cut with gouges, v-tools and chisels. The uncarved areas yield a mirrored image when printed. Students will learn to create imagery on linoleum, pink erasers, and flat rubber discs which will be used to experiment in print collage. Required materials: Speedball lino cutter set. Recommended materials: sketch-book, pencil, extra fine sharpie markers. □ Instructor Kimberly Fredricks□ M $125/NonMembers $145 (includes mounted linoleum block(s), paper, pink erasers, lino discs)□ Mon Jan 7, 14, 21, 28, Feb 4, 11 ► 7-8:30p PRT3104-A

■ Introduction to Woodblock PrintingThis class is designed to give students an introduction to the process of relief printing. Participants will learn the basics of this process by first working on black and white images then preparing them by removing the negative areas of the block or the white space, leaving the key image or black space as a relief. The surface of the block is then rolled in ink and printed by hand. Students will then work in color by using multi-block printing and the reduction cut processes. Participants will also be shown stamping and stenciling as easy alternatives to adding color to prints. By the end of this workshop, students will have developed an understanding of relief printing, therefore allowing them to

utilize the process after the workshop. Minimum 4 students. □ Instructor Pete Rangel □ M $250/NonMembers $280□ Sa, Su Jan 19, 20, 26, 27 Feb 2, 3, 9 10 ► Sa 2:30-5:30 Su 10:30-1:30p PRT3106-A

■ Color Relief Printmaking (Ages 16+) This class will take relief printmaking to the next level with the introduction and exploration of color relief printmaking. Students will learn the reductive woodcut process and multiple block printing process to achieve a multicolored image. The reduction woodcut process al-lows the printmaker to print as many colors as s/he wishes, yet only uses one block to print all the colors from. The multiple block process uses a separate block for each color with a final key block to bring the image together. Students will also learn registration techniques to keep imagery tight throughout each stage of printing. Required materials: 5 piece Miki-syo power grip set. Recommended materials: sketchbook, pencils, fine and extra fine point Sharpie marker, and soft rubber brayer. □ Instructor Kimberly Fredricks □ M $220/NonMembers $250□ Mon, Wed Feb 18, 19, 25, 26, Mar 4, 5, 11, 12, 18, 25 ► 7-8:30p PRT3102-A

■ Collagraph (Ages 12+)Collagraph is a type of printing matrix that results in an impression that is texturally and tonally rich. The word collagraph derives from the Greek kolla, meaning “glue,” and graphos, “to write”. Creating a collagraph is a constructive process: pieces of cardboard, tin foil, feathers, tape, fibers, fabrics, string and so on are glued to a base plate so that objects are in low relief on the surface. Ink is wiped into the collaged features of the plate. When printing, the paper is forced to stretch into the nooks and crannies to grab the ink. Students will create a variety of collagraph plates and learn to print them with in-taglio and relief printing processes. Required materials: small bottle acrylic gloss medium, Krylon crystal clear acrylic coating #1303. Recommended materials: sketchbook, xacto knife or box cutter, flat or bastard file, 5 piece woodcarving tool set, Elmer’s glue, spackling paste, fabrics, ribbons, leaves, tin foil, feathers, sand paper, various textured tapes, or any other interesting textured items no thicker than a penny. □ Instructor Kimberly Fredricks□ M $145/NonMembers $165□ Mon, Th Apr 1, 4, 8, 11, 15, 18 ► 7-8:30p PRT3103-A

■ Drypoint Engraving (Ages 13+)Drypoint is an intaglio (in-TAL-ee-oh) printmaking technique in which a sharp point is used to scratch into a metal or plexiglass plate. Drypoint is the simplest type of engraving. It is identified by its soft, furry quality of line. Ragged burrs of metal pushed up at the edge of the incised line give the softness that is the main beauty of drypoint. The technique of using a drypoint scribe is similar to drawing with a pencil. Ink is wiped into the burrs of the plate. When printing, the paper is forced to stretch into the nooks and crannies to grab the ink. Students will create a variety of drypoint plates and learn to print them with the intaglio printing process. Students will be exposed to other engraving techniques such as mezzotint and line engraving. Required materials: double pointed steel drypoint scribe with cork handle. Recommended materials: E.C. Lyons square burin #8 engraving tool, sketchbook, tracing paper, masking tape.□ Instructor: Kimberly Fredricks□ M $175/NonMembers $195□ Su, Wed Apr 14, 16, 23, 28, 30, May 5 (No class Su Apr 21) ► 7-8:30p PRT3105-A

■ Private Photography StudyDid you get a digital camera for the holidays, but are struggling to understand the instruc-tions? Or have you had one for a while and are not really sure what all of those buttons and knobs do. If you do not know the difference between “aperture priority” and “shutter priority” or why white balance is important (but you want to), this is a great class for you. The instructor will take you through the basics of the world of digital photography to help you make the most of your camera. These private lessons will help. Students are asked to bring in examples of pictures they have taken in the past and what they like about them. This will lead into discussion on the importance of different camera controls like aperture, shutter speed, ISO and white balance. Class exercises will be planned to exploit all of these different elements. □ Instructor Jim Kirkhoff□ $80/2 hour package or $150/4 hour package PVT3106-A
