The event consists of 4 per-formances and Thai food buffet, you have never seen before. They repre-sent Thai culture in many perspec-tives: Folkways, Dances, Poetries, and Martial Art. The festival aims to become a unique gastronomic and cultural event both through the authenticity of the dishes and of the ingredients and through the specificity of the decorative elements and of the entertainment pro-vided. The cooks and dancers, invited directly from Thai Students, will bring along traditional outfits and beautifully decorated masks. Moreover, the organizers invite you to discover these and many other surprises during this immersion into an exotic cultural space.

I would like to say thank you from the Thai stuffs who efforts this event to be the best as much as possible. Working with them pro-vides a significant numbers of experiences to me .

Chatchai Xivivadh President of Thai Society

I’m very honour to be a part of Thai society committee. It is an excellent opportunity for us to show our fellow members of the university of Warwick a taste of traditional Thai culture. We have worked very hard on the run down to bring the best ex-perience for the audiences. We intend to make the show to be a reflection of what traditions and cultures we have in the past, bringing them into modern lifestyle that apparently Thailand has been changed over time. Being responsible for actors and ac-tresses make up is a big responsibility and very challenging for me as many characters in the show are, somehow, not substan-tial, but are in antique novel and poetry. Therefore, it is very hard to make them real with all resources we have. However, all my teammates and I will put all of our efforts to make this happen.

I would like to thank to my lovely friends, Bow, Lek, Ray, Daow, Note that always support and provide good advices to me at all time. Thanks Wood, president of Thai society, who gave me this op-portunity. Thank you, all Thai friends that make this show happen. And you, the audience and friends, wish you all to enjoy this show.

Dear, our distinguish guests

I am proud of being one of many parts of ‘Warwick Cultural Thai Night 2011’. The concept or the theme of the event came from many inspira-tions, and slide of my life in Thailand, my birth country. The concept of this event called ‘Five Wonders Five Impressions’ which comprise five wonders in Thailand making five impressions every time I see. There-fore, it is a good opportunity for you to see Thai Wonders that you never seen before here. Thai costumes represent Thai’s pride, history and arts. Through the dresses used in this event, we can truly comprehend what the people are trying to express. Through the piece of cloth and design they are bearing, we can understand the Thai’s historical values..

Magical Perfromances

Speaking of Thailand, the remarkable thing shouldn’t be left mentioned is Thai Traditional Festival. Our tra-ditional festival is the legacy of our country inherited over hundreds years ago. The show ‘Magic of Water’ images our strong relation with river, representing Thai people’s way of life in the past that lived on the flow of river. For Thai people, river is very essential similar to the mainstream blood in generating our way of life, to be more precise, river means our life. During the month of April, we celebrate Songkran festival, the Thai traditional New Year celebration, by going to temples to pay homage and entertaining by splashing water to our peers. Later around the year end, as we depended on river in living and may by chance pollute it, so we apologise the revered water nymph on Loykra-thong day, the river gratitude tradition, by showing our gratitude and offering the flower decorative hand-made work to revere her. The show ‘Magic of Water’ will narrate the importance of river to our life and illustrate these two marvellous tra-ditional festivals through the flow of river and the appearance of the water nymph. As we are so proud of our tradition, we hope that you will enjoy our show and im-press by our legacy.

An inspiration of the show comes from my desire to convey “Thaism” through the universal body language of Thai Dance. The show is subdivided into 4 parts. The music, costumes and body language of performers pre-sented in each parts reflect unique characteristics of Thai citizens living in 4 dif-ferent regions of Thailand ; north, central, northeast-ern (Isan) and south regions respectively. I do hope that the show would at least drive an interest in Thai culture, particularly in The Art of Thai Dance, among international guests who have a chance to see and appreciate the beauty of Thai Dance through their eyes in The Warwick Thai Night. Also, I wish that the charm of Thai Dance in this show could more or less intensify the pride of “being Thai ” among all Thai students studying here at the University of Warwick.

The Third Wonders๓ Power of Thai

by Weerawat Choksaengthong

Thai boxing (muay Thai) is perhaps the one sport most identified with Thai-land. While it is a gruelling sport that demands a great deal of strength, flex-ibility and endurance from its combat-ants, it has a spiritual dimension that isn’t usually associated with sports.

The sport evolved from early forms of armed combat. It is first mentioned in 1411, but most likely evolved much earlier. The sport became so hard on the participants that it was banned in 1920, but was revived in 1937 with new rules to protect the fighters.

Today, Muay Thai is said to be one of the deadliest forms of mar-tial arts in the world. Although the number of participants has decreased over the years, Muay Thai is still a popular spectator sport. Television networks broadcast fights five days a week, and match results are reported in all major newspapers. International boxing is also very popular, and the country has produced dozens of world champions, who all started out as Muay Thai fighters. Recently, many Thai films have been made to celebrate the art of Muay Thai. ‘Beautiful Boxer’ tells the story of a fascinating trans-vestite boxer while ‘Ong Bak’ and ‘Tom Yum Goong’ feature Tony Jaa, Muay Thai sensation who has been hailed as the new Jackie Chan. These films seem to have revived Muay Thai’s popularity in Thailand and spread the art of Muay Thai all over the world.

Having been in-volved in Thai en-tertainment business as a stage performer, I always have huge interest in becom-ing a director of the show myself. The op-portunity of creating one massive show for Thai society as a way to spread the Thai culture in University of Warwick is, therefore, a good op-portunity I could not refuse to take responsibility.

The Beauty of Poetry Show is inspired by vari-ous old Thai popular poetries. These poetries are striking fictions which old Thai generations con-tinue telling to new generations and are involved fascinating story characters those often capture audience attentions. Hence, the idea of exploit-ing the beauty of these characters into a show will not only acknowledge others on Thai culture, but will definitely entertain them. I intend to create the show that inspires all of you to see real beau-ty of Thai poetries by setting up a fashion show which put focus on mesmerizing costumes and story-telling-performance. The show is worth seeing and sharing…I hope you will all enjoy!!
