Warm Up
1. Where are you supposed to be when the tardy bell rings?
2. How many sections should your binder have?
3. Where can you find your homework assignment if you forgot to write it down in class?
4. How many bathroom passes do you get per 9 weeks?
5. Name one administrator.
Make sure your name (1st and last),date, block, and “warm up” are on your paper
Note taking
Write title/subject to the left of the red margin line
Write explanation/definition to the right of the red margin line
This is called Cornell style notes
Test Taking Skills
Carefully read the directions and questionsFigure out what the question is askingRead each answerSlash the trashDoes your answer make sense?Go back and check your answersTrust yourself
Scientific Method
The Scientific method is a way in which Scientists conduct investigationsThere are 6 main parts of the Scientific method:1. Purpose2. Research3. Hypothesis 4. Experiment 5. Analysis6. Conclusion
1. Purpose
Identify the problem.Should be a question.
2. Research
Gather information about your topic
3. The hypothesis
It is a prediction or an educated guess of what you think will happen
Any valid (true/reasonable) hypothesis can be tested
4. Experiment
Time to test your hypothesisMake a materials list. List of procedures – the steps you will takeConduct experimentRecord observations
3 Variables for the Experiment
1) The independent variable – what you are testing. It is the only variable that is changed during an experiment.
2) The dependent variable – what you are measuring.
Variables
3) Constants - variables that do not change in an experiment
Collecting data – do not write
When we make observations in an experiment we record this information. This is our data.
Observations are anything we observe with our 5 senses. Sight, sound, taste, touch,& smell.
5. Analysis
Analyze your data collected during the experiment
6. Conclusion
Draw conclusion based on analysisConclusion should either support (prove) or
not support (disprove) our hypothesis.
Draw / illustrate
Get a textbook and turn to page 8Below your notes, draw figure 4Label it Scientific MethodAdd the name of each step in the appropriate
boxesMnemonic device??
What did you learn?
Close your binderName the 6 steps to the scientific methodIf you need help, quietly brainstorm with
someone near you, do not get out of your seat

Class work 1
Carefully get a workbook from the book shelf where the pencil sharpeners are
Turn to page 1Read pages 1 – 5Answer questions 3, 4, 5, and 6Write your answers in complete sentencesMake sure your name, block, date, and CW1
are on your paper
Warm Up – write out
1. Suggested explanation for an observation2. Organized procedure that involves making
measurements and observations3. Factor/variable in experiment that can be
manipulated/changed by experimenter4. Factor/variable in experiment that can change
if other factors are changed5. Factor/variable that does not change during
experiment6. List the 6 steps of the scientific method in order
Control
Standard for comparison that shows the results of an experiment are actually due to the condition being tested
Scientific theory
An explanation or model based on many tests or experiments (ex. Theory of Plate Tectonics)
Scientific LawA rule that describes the behavior of
something in nature (ex. Law of Superposition)
Bias
A person’s own opinion
EthicsA system of understanding what is good and
bad
Class Work 1
1. Carefully get a workbook2. Read pages 9-113. Answer in complete sentences the following
questions in the margins: 4, 6-84. When you finish, return your workbook and get
a worksheet from me5. Use the same piece of paper6. Answer questions 1-18 on your paper (skip
definitions), please do not write on the worksheet
7. Raise your hand for any questions you may have
Homework 2
Textbook page 30, questions 1-9Write out questions and correct answersStudy warm up and today’s notes for quiz
next block
You choose your activity
Your choices are1.Word wall poster – purpose, research,
hypothesis, experiment, analysis, conclusion, independent variable, dependent variable, constant; with a brief description
2.Mnemonic device – write down, will hang on wall
3.Song – write down4.Story – write down5.Index cards for memory game – I will collect to
use next week to study for the quiz
Mini-labs
1) Which dishwashing soap cleans best?
2) Which flashlight battery lasts the longest?
3) How many students are left handed/right handed?
Homework
Create your own mini-labIdentify the 6 steps of a scientific method
Review
Write down the six steps of the Scientific Method
Give a brief description of each
