Plot

The plot is what happens in the story.

In a plot, there is always a problem or a conflict, which is then followed by a resolution that solves the problem.

When Soralee was five years old, she and her mother planted a peach tree. The peach tree made beautiful, delicious peaches every year. They didn’t get to taste the peaches very often, though. The tree was right next to the street, and as people walked by, they would pick a few peaches and eat them. Every year, almost all the peaches got eaten that way. “I guess we could pick them before they’re ripe,” Soralee’s mother said. But nobody in the family wanted to do that because the peaches wouldn’t taste as good if they weren’t tree-ripened.

“I know what we can do,” said Soralee. “We can let people walking by have the peaches on that tree, and we’ll plant a new one closer tothe house that’s just for us.” So Soralee and her mother planted a new tree.

The sequence in a plot is the order of events, including a beginning, middle, and end.

Plot

In the beginning of the story on the previous slide, the tree is planted.

The problem (or conflict) is that the family love the peaches, but they don’t get to eat them.

The solution (or resolution) to the conflict comes at the end of the story, when Soralee and her family plant another peach tree for themselves

and let the people walking by have the peaches on the first tree.

In the middle of the story, people walking by eat the peaches, and Soralee and her family don’t get to eat them.

Plot

First, Soralee’s family plants a peach tree.

Then, the problem develops when people walking by eat most of the peaches.

Finally, the problem is solved when the family plants a new peach tree.

The sequence is the order in which events happen.

Plot

Cause and effect is when one thing makes another thing happen.

Here is one cause and effect from the story about the peach tree:

The effect is the thing that happens, and the cause is the reason the thing happens.

Cause:

The people walking by eat most of the peaches.

Effect:

Soralee and her family don’t get to eat many peaches.

Guided Practice with Plot

Read the story and answer the questions that follow.

Rennie kept going, putting one foot in front of the other. He and his two friends Randi and William had been hiking up the mountain all day. They were getting tired, but they had to reach the cabin. A storm was coming in fast. Just as Rennie had those thoughts, snow started falling. It quickly got thicker and heavier until it was hard to see the trail. It was at least half an hour more to the cabin. “If we get lost,” he thought, “we’re in big trouble.” Soon they stopped because they could no longer see the trail at all.

“What are we going to do now?” asked William. “I could build a snow cave if we have to spend the night outdoors. In a book I read once, an explorer built a snow cave.”

Guided Practice with Plot

Read the story and answer the questions that follow.

“I think that would be risky,” replied Randi. She didn’t know how to build a snow cave, and she knew that William probably didn’t, either. Just then the three friends were almost knocked over as a big Old English sheepdog bounded up to them.

“Fred!” Rennie exclaimed. “What are you doing here?

“Ruff, ruff!” barked Fred. Then he started heading up the mountain.

“Fred will lead us to the cabin,” said Rennie. “The snow won’t stop him from finding the way. Good boy, Fred!” Rennie called out to the dog. “We’re right behind you.”
