This guide is a go-to resource to help answer your questions as a new student of Waikato Management School.

Nau mai, haera mai, welcome to Waikato Management School (WMS)!

The Management Student Centre (MSC) (Hamilton) and Information Centre (Tauranga) have advisers available to help WMS students make the best study choices to suit your interests and career path, answer any questions about subject and degree requirements, help you change your enrolment if needed, and support you during your time at Waikato.

These support services provide a place for you to meet friends, study and use course resources.

Getting started

If you haven’t finalised your enrolment yet or have questions about your study, get in touch with your student centre.

Get to know important datesFamiliarise yourself with the important University dates for the year, including semester start/end dates and key events e.g. change of enrolment dates at waikato.ac.nz/study/key-university-dates

Manage your studies through MyWaikato and Moodle MyWaikato is the University’s student management system. You can check your timetable, assignment results, academic record or make changes to your enrolment through my.waikato.ac.nz

Moodle is the University’s learning management system. Moodle provides you with access to important course information including paper outlines, assessment details and deadlines, messages from teaching staff and more. Moodle is also where you sign-up for your class tutorials; places fill fast so sign up early. Tutorials generally start in the second week of each semester. You’ll learn how to sign up to tutorials in your first lectures. You can access Moodle by visiting elearn.waikato.ac.nz. If you are unable to log into Moodle, check your enrolment is complete via MyWaikato.

Prepare for your first classCheck your enrolment details through MyWaikato and ensure you’re enrolled in the right papers.

Take a look at the paper outlines for each of your courses by signing into Moodle. The outlines will tell you what you’ll be studying throughout the semester, and when your assessments will be due.

Getting started

Meet new people and get involvedSign up to the WMS student mentor programme to be paired with an experienced management student for one full semester (see page 12).

Join one of the student clubs or societies on campus by liking them on Facebook and signing up to them at Clubs Day. See pages 14-15 to check out some of the Waikato Management School Clubs.

Get to know the campusYour classes can be scheduled in any building on campus, not just within the Management School building (MSB). Use the campus map to familiarise yourself with the facilities and grounds, and to find your lecture theatres, tutorial and computer rooms. The interactive Hamilton campus map can be viewed at waikato.ac.nz/map. If you are based in Tauranga, information can be viewed at waikato.ac.nz/tauranga

What is expected of me as a student?University study requires that you take charge of your own learning - prepare and participate.

Staff are here to impart information, provide guidance and support, and challenge you to rise to higher levels of achievement.

You’re expected to:

• Review the set readings and any other specified materials.

• Attend all lectures and workshops, and take notes about the content.

• Complete, and correctly submit, all of your assessments on time.

• Check your emails daily and access Moodle frequently to be aware of updates and other information sent by staff.

• Manage your time effectively to ensure you meet your commitments in all courses.

What does the paper code mean?Every paper offered at Waikato has a code, showing the subject, level of study, semester of study and teaching location.

Example: STMGT101-19A(HAM) Introduction to Management

STMGT – subject (in this case Strategic Management)

101 – shows a 100-level paper

19A – A Semester 2019

HAM – shows the teaching location is the Hamilton campus.

How does the University timetable work?University classes typically run for 50 minutes. Some papers have two-hour lectures, streams or tutorials; often with a short 10 minute break.

Morning classes (8:00am – 12 noon) start on the hour.

Afternoon classes (from 1:10pm) start at 10 minutes past the hour.

Cultural hour is every Wednesday 1:00pm – 2:00pm, and is a time free of lectures and tutorials so clubs and societies can meet, and other University activities can be held.

How do I change my enrolment?You can change your enrolment by logging into mywaikato.ac.nz. Go to ‘Qualifications and Papers’, and select ‘Change of Enrolment’.

Typically you have until 5:00pm on the second Friday of A and B semesters and 5:00pm on the first Friday of T and S semesters to change your papers.

Which papers should I select?All management qualifications have a degree planner document which gives you an idea of the papers you’ll need to take at each level to complete your qualification. Undergraduate degree planners can be found at your student centre or online at management.ac.nz/qualifications.

When trying to decide on which papers you should:

• Look at the core papers for the qualification

• Look at the compulsory papers for the major(s) you have selected.

• Check when the papers are offered (i.e. which semester).

• Make sure your paper points for A and B semesters add up to a maximum of 60 points for each semester.

• Make sure you have met the prerequisites for enrolling in your chosen papers.

• Check the online timetable for any clashes. Be aware that timetable clashes of 2 hours or more may not be approved.

• Full-time study is considered equivalent to 120 points (i.e. 60 points or four papers per semester in A and B semesters).

• Check you have met any progression rules.

Progression rules

You must pass at least 60 points (four papers)at level 100 before enrolling in any level 200 papers, and at least 180 points, including 60 points at level 200, before enrolling in level 300 papers.

How do I enrol in tutorials? Enrol in tutorials through Moodle.

1. Log on to Moodle at elearn.waikato.ac.nz

2. Click on the paper name

3. Click on the ‘Sign up for your tutorial’ option

4. Click on the button next to the tutorial time you want

5. Then click ‘Save my choice’ at the bottom of the screen

6. Remember to make a note of your tutorial time and room

Where can I access a computer?Enrolled students have free internet access via UOW Students when using computers and WiFi on campus.

Hamilton

Waikato Management School computer labs are located on Level 0 of the main Management School (MSB) building and Level 0 in the ‘N’ building. The University Student Centre (‘M’ building) also has computers available for use and is open 24/7.

Visit the Security office to have after-hours access activated on your student ID card.

Tauranga

The computer lab is located on Level 1 (TCBD.1.03) in the new CBD campus building and will be open 24/7.

What if I don’t know which subject(s) I want to major in yet?Don’t stress – you don’t need to make this decision yet. If you’re unsure on what you’d like to major in, you can decide after you’ve tried a range of subjects in your first year.

I am doing a conjoint degree – what is the best way to plan my papers?Usually a conjoint degree (e.g. Bachelor of Business / Bachelor of Laws) is looked after by two faculties. Please contact both faculties to see what compulsory papers you need to complete in your first year.

Most of the business fundamental level 100 Management School papers are offered in both A and B semesters and possibly over summer school. This means you should choose your non-management papers first, and then add your management papers second.

TIP: If you have timetable clashes, you can usually swap the management papers to the other semester to avoid the clash.

What scholarship opportunities are there for me?A scholarship can open up a world of opportunities for you, no matter what stage of study you’re at. Whether you’re looking for support with study, fees or accommodation, Waikato has lots of options available to help set you up for the future.

What if I’m finding my assignments/assessments hard?

If you’re finding the academic content hard, have a one-on-one discussion with your lecturer during their office hours, or talk to your tutor or classmates. You can also take advantage of the free services available for students listed below.

If you’re struggling with reading, writing or oral presentation, contact the Student Learning team. Their tutors can help you develop academic skills such as mastering APA referencing, structuring your assignments and avoiding plagiarism through one-one-one tutorials and workshops. For more information or to book an appointment visit waikato.ac.nz/teaching-and-learning/student-learning.

The Library also offers tutorials for students throughout the year focusing on study and research methods. For more information or to sign up for a tutorial visit waikato.ac.nz/library/study/classes/about-tutorials.

Students taking Waikato Management School papers can access Studiosity, an online tutoring service offering personalised, live, online help from trained experts in two ways:

• Connect Live: Receive one-to-one interactive online academic support available Sunday to Friday 5pm – 2am.

• Writing Feedback: Upload your own piece of writing to receive constructive literacy, structure, grammar and referencing feedback support within 24 hours.

You can access Studiosity via your paper outlines in Moodle.

Alternatively, if you’re not enjoying your study, visit your student centre for advice about other possible options.

Not enjoying your study?You have until 5pm on the second Friday of A and B semester to change your qualification / papers with a full refund.

Where and how do I submit my assignments?

Online through Moodle

All assignments require a cover page, which includes your name, student ID number, paper code and assignment name. A

template is available under the Resources tab of all WMS Moodle papers. Please complete and save as the first page to all of your assignments.

When you upload your assignment, it stays in draft until you submit it. While it’s in draft, you can delete it and upload another version. Remember to submit your assignment before it’s due. You’ll receive an instant notification on screen once your assignment has been submitted correctly.

Late assignments may incur penalties, for further information please refer to your Paper outlines available through Moodle.

Handing in hard copy If you need to physically hand in your assignment, please remember to attach the assignment cover page.

Where and how do I collect my marked assignments? Assignments may be handed back to you during class time, or you may be asked to collect them from your student centre (bring your student ID card with you). Electronic grading will be posted on Moodle. Please note there may be delays between when you assignment grade appears on Moodle and when the hard copy is returned to the Centre for collection.

The centres keep assignments for 60 days. After that time, uncollected assignments will be shredded.

How do I apply for an assignment deadline extension?In special circumstances (e.g. bereavement, illness, accident, or other) you can apply for an extension for internally assessed work. Forms can be collected from course administrators.

Special Consideration applications must be made prior to the deadline for submitting the work and supporting documentation/evidence must be provided.

What should I do if I am impaired for an assessment or an exam?

Assessment

Apply to the course administrators in writing for special consideration within three days of the due date. Applications must include supporting documentary evidence e.g. medical certificate.

Examination

• To apply for special consideration you must consult with either a practitioner, psychologist or counsellor on the day of your examination or, if this is not possible, within 24 hours of the examination and complete the appropriate sections of the application form.

• Submit the application form to the Assessment Office within 72 hours of the examination affected.

What is plagiarism and what should I know about it?Plagiarism is presenting academic work which is the work of someone else as your own. Plagiarism is a serious offence and disciplinary action will be taken against those students who submit work that is not their own. This may include not referencing your work, or having work that is unusually similar to your classmate or a previous student.

Your assignment once submitted online is run through a plagiarism software tool called Turnitin, which easily identifies any similarities between your assignments, and published materials and other student assignments. Student Learning can help you with referencing to avoid plagiarism.

What is the Employment Skills Module and do I have to do it?Management Students who are enrolled in an undergraduate degree are required to complete the Employment Skills Module (ESM). The module covers the topics of planning your career, CV and cover letter writing, interviewing skills, and your employment rights and obligations.

Check the regulations for your specific qualification to see whether you’ll be required to complete the module in order to graduate.

What’s a completion check?If you’re in your final year of study, the Management Student Centre can undertake a completion check to ensure you’ve met all the requirements to graduate. All you need to do is email msc@waikato.ac.nz with your student ID number and add ‘Completion check’ in the subject line.

Where can I go for assistance within the University?For many students, the transition to university can be a time of increased freedom but also new responsibilities.

The University of Waikato offers a range of support services to help guide you through your studies and enhance your student experience including

• Health and wellbeing services

You can learn more about these services at the Information Centre (Tauranga) MSC, or visit the Student Information Centre located on Level 2 in Te Manawa (Student Centre in Hamilton). You can also view the services available online at waikato.ac.nz/student-life

The Waikato Students’ Union (WSU) also ensures students have a social safety net through Student Support and Advocacy. If you need legal advice, budgeting or finance support, or feel like your voice isn’t being heard, email WSU at support@wsu.org.nz

I’m interested in joining a student group, what are my options?There’s over 70 student groups and clubs ranging from academic clubs to lifestyle and interest you can join and get involved with on campus. The Waikato Students’ Union manages the network of affiliated clubs; if they can’t help you find a club that suits your interests then they can help you start one. WMS student mentor programmeLearn the ropes from other management students.The WMS student mentor programme can offer you free support by pairing you with an experienced management student for one full semester.

Your student mentor will draw on their own experiences to help and guide you on everything from classes, study strategies, student groups and resources to clubs and social activities in Hamilton.

This mentoring programme is free and currently available for all management students in Hamilton. We are looking to extend this service out to Tauranga students in the future.

Waikato Management School International Exchange ScholarshipThe Waikato OE student exchange programme allows you to travel overseas while completing your Waikato degree. You can earn the same points and pay the same fees as you normally would while studying at one of our partner universities around the world. Plus you can still receive your student loan and/or allowance while you’re on exchange.
