arts and culture: programme comparative arts and media studies

the programme Comparative arts and media studies focuses on the relations between visual arts, film, literature, television and the digital media, i.e. crossovers and interrelations between the arts and the media, but also within and between various media. these have been intensified with the arrival of the digital (hyper) medium insofar as the latter works through the interplay of words, images, and sounds on the screen, but also through the convergence of film, television, radio, news writing, e-books, and photography on the web.

the programme design Cultures focuses on product design, graphic design and fashion in a broad social, cultural and academic context. Central to the programme is the diversity of cultural processes where design has evolved as a practice, a product, an environment and a discourse in recent decades. the focus is on both the designer as ‘author’ and the complex chain of production, sale, consumption and criticism in which design operates and derives its many different meanings.

Biology is the study of life in all its fascinating manifestations, from viruses to human beings. By embracing new technologies, biologists have discovered that all life forms are governed by the same principles. the building blocks of life and the processes that make life possible are the same in mice, plants, bacteria and in people too. vu Biologists are specialized in these “universal principles” of life.

in the master’s programme in Biomedical sciences you can link research in infectious diseases with international publichealth, take up immunology and combine it with cell biology, or specialize in two separate subjects like cardiovascular diseases and brain and behaviour. or perhaps you would like to be the architect of your own specialization. in short, there are plenty of opportunities available.

law: specialization transnational legal studies

law and politics oF international security

the traditional distinctions between national, european and international law fail to capture the nature of law in a globalizing world. Cross-border phenomena such as terrorism, economic interdependence, migration, global warming and the internet invite us to use and think about law in ways that challenge traditional ideas of sovereignty and jurisdiction. Transnational Legal Studies focuses on law beyond the state in its social, political, economic, symbolic and policy context.

issues of international peace and security are becoming increasingly important in legal, political and administrative practice. the concept of ‘international security’ is no longer confined to traditional issues of war and peace, but now also covers topics such as terrorism and criminal law. the law and Politics of international security programme is based on the assumption that international law cannot be properly understood outside its political context, whereas contempo-rary international politics cannot be fully grasped without a solid knowledge of international law. the programme offers a multidisciplinary approach and gives students the opportunity to specialize in an increasingly crucial field of studies.

philosophy: christian studies oF science and society

Do you dare to question the purpose of your discipline? the master’s programme is a one-year course that aims at providing students with the intellectual tools for analysing key issues in contemporary science and society from a Christian perspective. this tradition, which means taking an open and critical approach to modern-day issues, stretches back to augustine and many other thinkers within the Christian tradition. With students from many different countries enrolled, the programme provides a unique opportunity for debating these issues in an international context.

Entirely new software architectures are required to develop large-scale, geographically distributed systems to allow billions of users to manipulate huge amounts of data. scalability of algorithms will be a key issue, as existing technologies fall short in this respect. New techniques are also needed in security, performance analysis, programming models and visualization. the master’s programme in Parallel and distributed Computer systems specializes in educating students in this new area.
