participatein.Thecourseremainsinexcellentshapedespitetheamountofplayitis

getting.Takefulladvantageoftheweather,asitwillnotlastforever.

Asfortheupcomingfall,thereisamembersmeetingscheduledforFridayOctober3,2014.

AtthismeetingnewBoardmemberswillbeelectedandimportantinformationwillbe

Asforourfinancialstanding,despitetherumormillandthe“peoplewhoknowall”,there

willNOTbeanyassessmentonthemembershipfor2014.Weshouldfinishtheyearat

abreak-evenpoint,basedoncurrentprojectionsandsomeadjustmentstoourbudget.

Despitethefactthatmembershipisdown,greensplay,outsidetournaments,restaurant

incomesareallup.

For2013duringourbudgetmeetingsitwasanticipatedthatwewouldhavea5%reduction

inmembership.Theactualnumberexceeded5%sotheadoptedbudgetneededadjustment

toonceagainbeinbalance.WiththeguidanceofourTreasurer,thenecessarychanges

weremade.

BSCCisaveryviablebusiness,whichprovidesexcellentgolfforthegolfingcommunity.

Howwekeepitongoodfootingandhowtokeepthemember-ownershappyisopenfor

discussion.

AsIgetreadyformylastmatchtonightagainstagoodfriend,Iamconfidentthatwithhard

workandagroupcommitmenttoimprove,BSCCwilllastformanyyearstocome.

andifthereisanythingwecandotostopthespread.Wehavebeeninformedit

isafunguscalled“RhizosphaeraNeedlecastonSpruce”anditismovingintothe

northeast.Thedeadtreeson7willberemovedthisfall/winter,whenStevehas

time,andwewilldetermineiftheremainingtreescanbesaved.Wewillalsocheck

onothertreesonthecourseandtrytopreventthespread,whichhappensinthe

spring.IwouldliketothankMaxineTuckerforhereffortsinresearchingthis

problem.

Asmentionedpreviously,thegreenscoverraffleisonholduntilspring.Therewill

bea50/50forthe“Men’syearend”outingandthecrosscountry.RickFunaroand

SteveLudwinareworkingondetails.Thiscouldgiveusenoughmoneyforatleast1

additionalcoverforthecomingwinter.

September EventsWewillhavemanysmallgroupsthatwillbehavingtheiryearendeventsatBallstonSpaCountryClubthismonthsoweaskthatyoupleasecallaheadtomakeateetimeoronlinetobookthetime.Thiswillmakethingsmucheasierforallandallowalltoenjoythecourseatatimethattheywillbeleastinconvenienced.Weareluckytohavealloftheseplayersplayourfacilityastheconditionofourcoursehasgottenoutandouroutsideplayhasincreasedsignificantlythisseason.

Calendar of EventsAstheseasoncontinuestomoveon,wewillstillhaveasomeeventsonthecalendar.AllscheduledeventsareontheCalendaronourwebsitesopleasecontinuetochecktheseoutasMemberEventsandOutsideEventswillcontinueforthemonthofSeptember.

Golf StatsIwantedtogivetheeveryonesomeinsightastosomeresultsofscoringaftertheNENYPNCGolfEventheldhereatBallstonSpa.With37GolfProfessionalsinthefieldandanaveragescoringof76.01overa36HoleEvent,onceagaintheback9wins.Theaverageontheback9was39.45.Somenotesofwhichholesplayedmostdifficultasfollows.Hole#14wasthemostobviouschoiceofthemostdifficultasthestrokeaveragewas5.09.Someuniqueotherswerethepar3’s.Holes6,15,and2wereinthetop6ofmostdifficultholesonday2.Hole#6wasthe3rdmostdifficultholeovera36holetotal.Ithoughtthatthiswasreallyinterestinginformationasitheldthetestwiththecontroversialtreethatwasremovedandthemanyopinionsthatfelttheholewouldbeeasierwithitgone.

Hole#1wasranked2ndondayoneandranked14thonday2.Thebigreasonforthiswastheholelocation.Ondayone,theholewascutdeadcenterbutinthefrontofthegreen.Onday2,theholewascutinthecenteralsobuttowardsthebackofthegreen.Ithoughtthiswasquiteinterestingastohowtheholesrankedandchangedfromdaytoday.Themainreasonforthiswastheplacementoftheholeforeachday.Thisshowsthatthehandicaprankforeachofourholesisuniqueandcanchangequiteabitbasedonwheretheholewascut.Our4par3’swereinthetop8forthe2days.Onceagain,thiswasallinformationthatgatheredfromallplayerscompetingfromtheBlueTeemarkers.Onelastnote,theprofessionalsplayedfromthe10thteewhenplayingthe4thholeforthe2days.

DearFellowMember, Iwould liketo takethisopportunity to introducemyselfandaskforyoursupportasIseekapositiononourclub’sBoardofDirectors.MynameisRickFunaroandIhavebeenamemberofBallstonSpaCountryClubsince1992.AsaformermemberoftheBoardofDirectors,servingfromMay2001throughMay2007andagainfromMay2008throughMay 2011, I was involved in many areas and chaired a number ofcommittees.Havingservedasco-chairof theGreenCommittee,andchairpersoninchargeofmembership,advertising,andinsuranceallowsmetobringagreatdealofclubexperiencetotheBOD.ServingasClubPresidentfor6years, fromMay2004toMay2007andMay2008toMay2011,providedmetheopportunitytobeinvolvedinallaspectsofclubbusiness.IfeelIcanoffertheclubagreatdealasaresultofmyexperienceandwouldcontinuetoworkhardforthebenefitofourentiremembership. I recently retired fromKnollsAtomicPowerLaboratorywhereIworkedfor33yearsandmanaged3differentITorganizationsduring the last 22 years. MynameisCindyWalkanowskiandIaskingforyoursupportinmycandidacyfortheBoardofDirectorsfortheBallstonSpaCountryClub.IamcurrentlyservingontheBoard,asIvolunteeredtofillarequestforavacancyleft inApril. IcurrentlyamamathteacheratBallstonSpaHigh School, where I have worked since 1998. I believemy teachingexperiencesaswellasmyinvolvementinactivitiesintheclubmakemeanexcellentcandidateforthisposition.Myhusband,Stan,andIhavebeenmembersof theclubsince2006.Throughoutmymembership, Ihavebeeninvolvedinmanyaspectsoftheclub.Ihavebeenthewomen’sleague coordinator for thepast sevenyearsand Ihave servedon thetournamentcommitteeforthepastfiveyears.YoumayalsoknowmeinmyPurple andGold as theBallstonSpaHighSchool VarsityGolfcoach,whichIhavecoachedforthepast11years.Ihavealsohelpedcoordinateseveraloutingsattheclubforthewomen’sassociation,thehighschoolandthegolfteam.Ifelected,mygoalsfortheBoardaretoincrease newmembership, retain currentmembers, and improve themembership experience. I believe this canbedonewith transparencyandcommunication.Asmanymembersstated,thisclubhasasenseofcommunityandmygoalwouldbetodevelopandenrichthatexperience.Iwouldliketothankyouforyourconsideration,andwouldappreciateyourvote.

Meet the 2014 Board Candidates

Membersince2010RetiredMilitary(U.S.CoastGuard)ItwouldbemypleasuretoserveontheBoardofDirectorsforBSCC.IfeelthatIcancontributetoBSCCandhelpmoveitforward.IfeeltheprimarygoaloftheBoardistopreservethelong-termviabilityofthecourseweallenjoysomuch,whilemaintainingitsvalues/necessities(i.e.greens,teesandfairways).Weareagolfclubnotacountryclubinthetruesenseofthemeaning.Thiswillnotbeaneasytaskwhenyouthinkofthecurrentstateofotherclubsintheareaandthecurrentdeclineinthegeneralpopulationwishingtotakeupthegame.Ihaveheardover the last fouryears frommembersandoutsideplayers, that thecoursehasneverbeenbetterandweaccomplishedthisonaverytightbudget.“BravoZulu”tooursuperintendentandhisstaff.Wealsowereabletoaccomplishalotofpositivethingsforthemembershipsuchasmaintainingduesatareasonablerate,coursewideimprovementsandtherecentlyinstalledfirepit.Iunderstandthatwhatisrelevanttosomemembersmaynotmeanmuchtoanother,butwenolongercanmaintainthestatusquo.Weneedtolookateveryoptionandthinkoutsidetheboxforthefutureofthiscourseandtheloveofthegameandtherelationshipswedevelopedbecauseofit.Werealizewearelivinginsomerougheconomictimes.Theclubneedstogeneratemorerevenueinordertomeetourbudget.Thepreferredmethodwouldbetogetmoremembersbutthatisnotthecurrenttrendiflesspeoplewanttoplaygolf.Theotheroptionisfromoutsideplay.Wecannotdothingsaswedidinthepastduetothefinancialconstraintsthatweare facing. Wemustbecareful inplanningeffortsandbecreative inordertosurvivethis downturn. Wehave to do everything possible to protect our beloved course andbeaccountableforourexpenses.Inmy30yearsinthemilitaryIbecameadeptatoptimizingourresourceswhileminimizingtheimpactithadonouroperations.Thisskillshouldnotbeconfusedwith“findingthecheapestway todo something”, rather Imadefinancialdecisions,which lookednotonlyattheshorttermcostbutalsoincludedthelongtermimpact.ItwouldbeanhonortobeabletousemyskillsasamemberoftheBoardofDirectors.IwouldappreciateyourvoteofconfidencesothatImayassisttheclubinanywaypossible.
