In keeping with

tradition, this issue

of “Aces and Insights”

celebrates our

scholarship recipients

and latest program grant awardees. This

year we congratulate 71 outstanding high

school seniors who will be receiving awards

ranging from $500 to $15,000 and thirteen

programs receiving funding ranging from

$10,000 to $30,000.

Early in June, there was a N

ew Y

Tim

op-ed article, “Rising Above I.Q.,” by Nicolas D.

Kristoff that focused on three ethnic groups

that have been unusually successful and the

lessons that might be learned. For everyone

concerned about the future of our nation’s

children, especially those in danger of being

left behind, it was fascinating and important

reading.

Kristoff wrote, “What’s the policy lesson from

these three success stories? It’s that the most

decisive weapons in the war on poverty aren’t

transfer payments but education, education,

education… e next step is intensive early

childhood programs, followed by improved

elementary and high schools, and programs to

defray college costs…Perhaps the larger lesson

is a very empowering one: success depends

less on intellectual endowment than on

perseverance and drive.”

Reading these words reinforced the beliefs

of USTA Serves – education is the key –

education opens doors – education empowers

children living in difficult circumstances.

e academic enrichment provided at our

funded programs and the college scholarships

to deserving high school seniors can be the

driving force in helping children believe in

themselves and succeed in school. us,

putting their feet on the road to responsible,

productive citizenship.

Our thanks to you, our donors, for making the

dreams of so many young people come true!

We look forward to seeing you at the Open.

Among the new recipients are Holliday Park Kids

in Topeka, Kansas and Special Olympics Alaska.

According to program director, Joyce Ritchey,

Holliday Park Kids, Parks & Recreation of Topeka,

and the local USTA have partnered to develop

“Tennis and Education in the Neighborhood

(TEN),” a new program for approximately 300

children, ages 7-14, in underserved communities.

TEN will provide youth with skills training in

computer technology, reading, math and tennis

over the course of a year at 10 community based

locations throughout Topeka.

Special Olympics Alaska, an Adaptive Tennis

program, will use tennis participation as a

vehicle for social inclusion, increased academic

achievement, and improved fitness and motor

skills. e tennis component of the project will

provide students with intellectual disabilities

and peer mentors without disabilities with

the opportunity to learn to play tennis.

Social inclusion through mentoring will be

accomplished through the interaction of the

participants in educational after-school activities.

When Jeff Marx died in February 2008 after

a heroic battle against cancer, his friends and

colleagues, stunned and saddened by his death,

were eager to find a way to memorialize a

man who had touched so many lives. Jeff, who

practiced internal medicine on Long Island,

was a dedicated tennis player and a man who

strongly believed in helping others.

What better way to pay tribute to his memory,

they reasoned, than a day of tennis

for a good cause? For the three

organizers – Mitch Pinckney (

Michelman, and Aaron Morgan –

USTA Serves was the perfect partner.

On May 16, 2009, the Jeff Marx Tennis

Memorial was held at the Racquet Club of

Old Westbury with more than 100 people,

including Jeff’s wife, son and daughter, attending.

e Racquet Club, where Jeff had played many

hours of tennis, donated the site, and a great

outpouring of support from many, many friends

made the afternoon a great success, raising money

for a New York-area tennis program for autistic

children funded by USTA Serves and

to purchase a Paver honoring Jeff on

the Avenue of Aces at the BJK USTA

National Tennis Center.

“ is was a labor of love for us to

remember a dear friend,” explained

Mitch Pinckney. “We hope this event

will serve as a blueprint for others

who want to memorialize loved ones. USTA

Serves is a very worthy cause and the Foundation

staff were really helpful every step of the way.”
