MESSAGE FROM MITCHELL
Dear Friends,
On behalf of the Board of Directors of Maloto, I am excited to share our annual Impact Report with you. Inside these pages is a showcase of our latest accomplishments and growth, none of which would be possible without your generous support.
Our goal may be easily stated, but is hard to accomplish: feeding, educating and empowering women and children in Malawi. In a country ravaged by HIV/AIDS, extreme poverty and food scarcity, Maloto’s programs have built physical infrastructure and people power from the ground up to be able to deliver life-saving and life-enriching services.
At their most basic, our programs nurture children and women in Mzuzu, Malawi, providing a foundation for them to thrive in all aspects of their lives.
But Maloto does so much more. In 2018, we provided over 350 children with hot meals three times a week. We educated hundreds of primary and secondary students, providing scholarships for many of them to attend our Mzuzu International Academy. We saw our largest graduating class, ever. And the original Kwithu Women have continued to be leaders of the community and entrepreneurs of an innovative tomato preserving business.
As the leader of a global HIV prevention organization in my professional life, I am thrilled to be part of Maloto that is able to deliver impact at the community level, disseminating information about HIV testing, prevention and treatment, allowing the people of Mzuzu and surrounding communities to live longer, healthier lives.
We’re proud of these 2018 milestones – all of which have been achieved by Malawian women who are the strong backbone of their Mzuzu community. Thank you for sharing our passion, believing in what Maloto does every day and providing support that makes it all possible.
With enormous thanks and warmest regards,
Mitchell WarrenBoard Chair
MESSAGE FROM ANNA
Dear Friends,
GREETINGS FROM THE WARM HEART OF AFRICA!
I want to thank you for your support of Maloto’s programs to feed, educate and empower women and children in Malawi. We owe a lot to the individuals and institutions that have helped us nourish and nurture the community of Mzuzu for more than a decade.
Because of great contributors like you, I am looking to the future with hope to increase the impact of Maloto this year and beyond. Maloto is effective because creative and determined Malawian women leaders helm our initiatives. These women are the heart of our organization, and are building on our past success by:
• Expanding the Kwithu Kitchen tomato business into new markets and with new products like honey
• Welcoming more students to Mzuzu International Academy• Reaching more women, men and young people with HIV
prevention and treatment education
As a Malawian woman, I am especially proud that local women from Mzuzu lead our innovations. They know best how to make lasting change for the next generations. Maloto programs have already had such a profound influence on the community by sharing warm, nutritious meals; helping students excel in their studies; and lifting up women to leadership through economic empowerment. I can’t wait to see what the next few years bring.
With deep gratitude,
Anna Msowoya KeysFounder & CEO

INTERVIEW WITH A LEADER FROM OUR YOUNG PROFESSIONALS BOARD
Maloto’s Young Professionals Board (YPB) are a group of twenty passionate volunteers early in their careers who come together to fundraise for Maloto’s programs. We spoke with Rose Allen, a stellar longtime volunteer and leader of the YPB.
Maloto: Why is the YPB important to Maloto, and to the members?
Young people are the future of the nonprofit. In order for us to make a difference in Malawi we need to engage younger people and grow their passion for the cause. We all give so much of our daily energy to our jobs and it’s important to have an outlet outside of your work so you can share your skills for good. Being involved with Maloto reminds us of the world outside the bubbles we live in.
Because many of the members of the YPB have traveled to Malawi – the next trip is in February 2019 – we can see the impact of our fundraising efforts. We become really great ambassadors for the mission of Maloto because we see the work in action. Awareness is one of the most important things because with increased visibility, there will be more support.
Maloto: How did you first get involved with Maloto?
After I graduated from college and was working in NYC, I attended a Maloto fundraiser. I was inspired by Anna Msowoya Keys’ powerful speech about feeding, educating and empowering women and children in Malawi. I knew in my heart I had found the organization I wanted to pour my time and energy into, and to make a long-term investment in.
Maloto: What keeps you involved?
I’m continually inspired by Maloto and Anna, who is a powerful woman leader creating lasting change in a vulnerable community. I’ve traveled to Mzuzu, and getting to meet the women and children she speaks of is amazing. The opportunity to learn from Anna, and from them, is extremely meaningful.
Maloto’s Mission & Vision
Mission: to transform the lives of vulnerable populations living in extreme poverty in Malawi and provide women and children with the opportunity to reach their full potential in an actively sustainable way.
Vision: to create educated, empowered and productive communities in Malawi and to provide an opportunity for Africans to help Africans.
Values: Maloto values the insights and knowledge of local communities. We work directly with local partners to ensure development is relevant to people’s lives and therefore sustainable.
