Structure of the Learning Unit:

Integrated Activity

This lesson is aimed at integrating ICT into current, relevant class curriculum. Using this approach

enables learners to use the computer not only as a working tool but also a as a relevant learning tool to

learn new concepts and skills or consolidate previously learnt work. This activity will take between 20 –

60 minutes (or 1-3 lessons) to complete depending on the ability of the learners and the time available.

e-Learner Assessment

The required assessment for each unit is completed by the ICT teacher by means of evaluating each skill

on the skills matrix. The ICT teacher can indicate on the skills matrix whether the skill is being practised

or developed by inserting a tick in the appropriate column next to the appropriate skills. Should the

teacher wish to formally assess the skills, a symbol of 1, 2, 3 or 4 is inserted into the matrix in the

assess column next to each skill assessed. The corresponding skills should also be marked off on the e-

Learner Administration System and forwarded to Head Office when completed. As a pre-requisite for

accreditation, all the required skills for each e-Learner unit need to be mastered. In this way, the level

of ICT competency as well as the progress of each learner can be monitored. This matrix may be printed

or photocopied for each learner.

INTEGRATED ACTIVITY

In order to promote relevant discussion, the following questions are

posed by the educator to the learners:

- What did dinosaurs look like?

- When and where did dinosaurs live?

- Can you name some of the notorious dinosaurs?

A short discussion takes place about the dinosaurs, when and where

they lived and some of the characteristics of the notoriously well-known

dinosaurs.

Explain to the learners that they are going to draw a picture of a

dinosaur doing dot-to-dot with a difference. Each dot is a subtraction

sum which needs to be solved. Once the dot-to-dot has been

completed, we are going to decorate the dinosaur with auto shapes.

Task: Today you are going to draw a picture of a dinosaur and

decorate it with auto shapes.

Note to the educator: This task requires the template:

minusaurus.doc which can be found by double clicking on the

Computers4Kids shortcut on the desktop.

1. Double click on the Computers4Kids shortcut on

the desktop.

2. Click on the relevant volume number and lesson

number.

3. Click on the template hyperlink under the Template Linx

heading.

4. The file which opens will look like this:

This will enable you to draw curved lines

between selected points.

8. Place your cursor on the green subtraction

sum (starting point) and left click

once. This will begin your curved line.

9. After solving the subtraction sums, click on the next appropriate dot

and click once more. This will connect your first dot to the second dot.

10. Continue connecting dots in this manner until you reach

the last dot (number 28). To finish drawing the curved

line, double click on this last dot. You will have one

continuous curved line connecting all the dots contained

within white adjustment handles. With the adjustment

handles present you may format the curved line so that it

appears thicker and darker.

11. Right click the mouse. A pop-up menu will appear. Select
