Students did a fantastic job representing the College and came away very inspired by the event. Many hours were dedicated to practicing and planning. Well done to the students and Musical Directors Mr Cammans and Mrs Mel Crawford.

GENERATIONS IN JAZZVocal ensemble the ‘Faithful Harmonics’ has become the first vocal ensemble from Faith to attend the Generations in Jazz Festival in Mount Gambier. Set on the outskirts of the township, the event was held from the 3rd to the 5th of May in a custom built marquee, the largest of its kind in Australia seating up to 6,100 people. Students rubbed shoulders with more than 5,000 like-minded students and teachers as part of this highly regarded competition. Daily concerts by national and internationally acclaimed Jazz artists delighted students and the clinics further cultivated their musical talents. The pinnacle of our student's experience was competing against 24 other schools in the choir division. Amongst more than 30 choirs, our students performed with confidence and skill ranking 6th overall, placing 4th in the Set Piece and

6th in the Free choice piece accompanied by Daniel Kitson on the Double Bass. A significant achievement considering the caliber of talent showcased at this National/International Jazz Festival.

BUSK TIL DUSKRecently some of our Year 7 and Year 8 students who play in a rock band competed in the Busk till Dusk competition. They took out the People’s Choice award and $400. Congratulations to Bailey ‘Bass’ Schwarz, Wils ‘Guitar’, Jayden ‘Singer’ and Kai ‘beat em down’ Bingham on drums. Congratulations also to Tristan Pearson who performed on the night and former student Eli Davis who won the overall prize with a very talented performance.

STRATEGIC DIRECTION UPDATEPrincipal Steve WilkschMay I extend my sincere thanks to parents, students, staff, and Board members who gave their time to participate in our Strategic Planning sessions last week. Dr. Neville Highett was very positive in his assessment about the high level of engagement of all who participated. We have already begun the process of collating feedback and there have been some very clear emerging trends. One of the strengths identified has been our College staff; dedicated, committed, students focussed, selflessly giving, focused on the Christian ministry of the church, having a heart for each student and going the extra mile. What a privilege it was for me to see all stakeholders of the College community recognise the outstanding contribution of staff and the immense value they bring to the College. May I wish you God’s blessing for the term ahead and again, thank you for your contribution to our strategic plan. Your input will have a significant influence on our future direction and we look forward to sharing more of these results once the report has been handed down.

ANZAC DAY REFLECTIONSThe first morning of Term 2 was an opportunity for our staff and students to attend a special ANZAC Day chapel. The men and women who served to protect our freedom were acknowledged and our Senior Choir gave a beautiful performance of ‘In Flanders Fields’ and ‘Advance Australia Fair’.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old;Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning

We will remember them.Lest we forget.

BEYOND THE SCRIPTURES As part of the College’s Easter celebrations inTerm 1, more than fifty Year 12 students performed a powerful and moving Easter service from the perspective of those closest to Jesus. Co-written by students and Chaplain Adam Yeager, the group interpreted the scriptures to compose a play highlighting the anguish, fear and betrayal felt by Jesus’ disciples, Pontius Pilot and his mother Mary during the time of his crucifixion. Accompanied by musicians and vocalists, the riveting performance served as an undeniable reminder of God’s love for us, and how his sacrifice offers forgiveness, hope, and eternal life for all who believe.

YEAR 9 FAMILIES ‘RITE JOURNEY’ UPDATECraig Chidgey on behalf of The Rite Journey teamSo often we hear about challenges facing teenagers, many of which are relevant and need to be considered when dealing with a child’s wellbeing. Let’s put on another hat. Consider some of the challenges parents come across in the parent journey. There is no ‘ready-made’ available ‘how to parent’ manual. As parents we might have some of the answers when faced with challenges our teenagers are going through. In saying there is not a ‘ready-made’ manual, there are some very helpful resources available to assist us in the journey. I would encourage you the consider looking at ‘The RITE Journey’ Facebook content. It has excellent content which is a mix of videos, quotes and links to useful websites. Visit https://www.facebook.com/theritejourney/Recently a ‘Mentor’ letter was sent home via your student. Please read through this letter carefully. It shares information about each student finding a suitable ‘Mentor’ for the remainder part of their ‘RITE Journey’ program this year. We would encourage you to have conversations with your son / daughter about this, and to work with them as they choose a mentor for the course.

In Term 1 students sold 124 meat chickens to Faith families and the broader community. Excellent customer service was reported including offering to assist customers to their cars with their produce. Students pictured left to right: Darcy Thompson, Zayden Storey, Jack Roocke, Max Jones, Finlay McCulloch, Isaac Zilm, Charlotte Thompson, Hamish Bourne and Will Falkenberg.

MYLOR YEAR 8 CAMP Jack Fechner and Caitlin White, Year 8 Year Level LeadersIn Term 1 Week 9, Year 8 students travelled to Mylor for the annual Year 8 camp. During the camp all Year 8 students, some Year 12 students and teachers participated in many exciting and uplifting activities. The camp also encouraged new friendships for us and teamwork in our groups. One of the activities we participated in was the giant swing. The giant swing was a really cool activity for us because it challenged a lot of us to break past the fear barrier, and it was also very fun. Canoeing was equally as entertaining. We had races and played many amusing games which were amazing for us to develop more teamwork skills. Another popular activity amongst the students was the Flying Fox. Beginning on a gum-tree covered hill, the 200-metre-long zipline stretched along an open, grassy area overlooking a large portion of the campsite. Speeding down the flying fox built up exhilaration and being high above the ground was breathtaking. On the final night of camp, each Village performed mock advertisements in the traditional camp concert. We had worked on them for the past few weeks with our Villages. Performing was in equal measures terrifying and fun and the Year 8s proved to be a very creative group.Overall, the Year 8 Mylor Camp was an amazing and exciting experience for all students involved. The diversity of activities brought us closer together and by the end of the breakfast sing-a-long on the last day we had a definite sense of belonging.

FUTURE PATHWAYSCharli Braid, a Year 12 student who is passionate about her Veterinarian pathway beyond school chose to complete an Adelaide Zoo Careers Awareness Day and work experience with the University of Adelaide Veterinary Hospital in Roseworthy in the April two week break. Charli negotiated this excellent opportunity independently, so well done, Charli! Please read her experiences. Trish Cirillo, Pathways Coordinator

I decided to attend the Zoo’s Career Awareness Day because I have a keen interest in working

with animals and a career at the zoo is definitely something I am interested in. A lot of the day was career focused and there were a number of zoo workers that spoke to the group about the types of jobs available in the zoo and how they got their jobs. These included zookeepers, a horticulturist, a vet nurse and an educator. There were also animal presentations and free time to visit the animals in the zoo. One of the zookeepers brought in a goat and galah from the petting zoo and performed a show while she was teaching us about the animal training they use in the zoo. We also had the opportunity to pet a corn snake and examine animal skins. As a group, we watched the daily tiger feeding and then had a Q & A with the head carnivore zookeeper. In small groups, we were assigned an enclosure and were asked to list the people involved in designing, building and maintaining the area for a specific animal. At the end of the day, a speaker from TAFE came in to discuss pathway options into jobs in the zoo and other animal-related careers. The day was amazing and so much fun. There were around 40 students in Years 10-12 from a huge range of schools that attended the day and it was great to get to know people with similar interests that are so passionate about animals. The speakers from the day were excellent and it was fascinating to hear their

stories and how they ended up in their varying careers. Learning about the range of careers as well as some different animals was so much fun and overall the day was just amazing. This day was definitely in line with my pathways beyond school as I would love to be a vet and I am particularly interested in wildlife so working in a zoo would be a dream. The TAFE speaker was great and introduced us to so many different animal-related careers and the pathways to get there that I had never considered. My week at the Vet Hospital was an amazing and informative week. I was able to observe spays, anaesthetising, preparation of animals, surgeries, consults and ultrasound surgeries.I had the fabulous opportunity to assist with animals during surgeries, with animals during consults and assisting animals with x-rays.During my week, I was fortunate to observe an emergency surgery, which was fascinating. I realised that you need to cope well in high-pressure situations and make quick decisions whilst communicating well with staff and clients with empathy and accuracy. After having completed my week at the Vet Hospital, it has confirmed my pathway of becoming a Veterinary and I am certainly looking forward to it.

On Thursday 4th April, 18 Year 12 students travelled to the SACE Art Show with Cherie O’Dea and Melanie Spehr. We also visited the Jam Factory where Tom Borgas addressed our students about his sculptural pieces for his show called, Concrete. Tom worked at Faith as our Design teacher a few years ago, and it was wonderful to see his most recent works. We enjoyed a street art walk back through City West, arriving at the Art Gallery of SA, North Tce to see the Ben Quilty Exhibition and the new curation of Australian and Contemporary art.

“The part I loved most about the Visual Arts excursion was seeing the Art Gallery of South Australia and being able to see many artworks from various cultures and different artistic styles”. - Brianna Setlhong

“I found the art and design excursion an awesome opportunity to gain inspiration for my upcoming folio and conclude the Visual Study element. The art gallery, particularly Ben Quilty’s exhibition, was a great chance to experience a range of different artwork created in a variety of mediums. I loved spending the day with all the art and design students together too”. Ariel Heinrich

"My favourite part of the day was visiting the SACE art and design show, I didn’t want to leave! Seeing the amazing works of past students has definitely inspired my upcoming Folio. It was also a great chance to connect with the other students in the class and take a ‘family’ photo on our street art walk." - Hannah Clarke

"The excursion to the SACE art show and the Adelaide art gallery was a wonderful opportunity as we were able to look at a number of different artists’work. This gave me heaps of inspiration for my Folio.” - Lucy Zilm

SEIBO STUDENT VISIT From the 22nd of March to the 2nd of April we had 24 students and 2 teachers from our Japanese sister school, Seibo Gakuen come to Faith for a short-term exchange. The students came with the purpose of being immersed in the English language and the Australian way of life. During their stay, the Seibo students attended lessons provided especially for them in the subjects of Art, English, Science, PE, History and Music. They were also given the opportunity to attend regular lessons with their host siblings and buddies. The Seibo students thoroughly enjoyed their visit to Gorge Wildlife Park, where they were able to hold a Koala and pet Kangaroos, and their walk to Murray Street, Tanunda, where they went souvenir shopping. The Year 7-12 Japanese classes also enjoyed the opportunity to interact with the Japanese students. Highlights included the Year 7’s practicing their Hiragana with the students and showing them their favourite activities, and the Year 9’s working with the Seibo students to teach each other about their language and culture. Thank you so much to all staff, students and families who were involved in the short-term exchange.

2019 FAITH STUDENT COUNCILKatherine Ahearn, Year 9 Year Level Leader

I chose to join the Student Council because I believed I would be a good representative for my peers and would be able to put forward their needs, wants and ideas to people who could make them happen. There were a lot of changes occurring in the College already and I wanted to be a part of making it happen. I also saw being a member of the Student Council as a great opportunity to put myself out of my comfort zone, and gain skills in teamwork, leadership, and public speaking.

Because many of the members of the Student Council are a little older than myself and my peers, sometimes it can be important to get opinions from the younger side of the school. I guess that’s where I come in! I can provide a differing point of view and also maybe be a little more relatable to the younger students.

The Student Council meets every Monday at lunchtime to discuss whatever has arisen that week. It may be ideas/requests from students, planning events in the school, or conversing about school policies/rules. From time to time extra meetings may be planned during the week for special occasions. This year one of our goals is to plan more things involving the Junior Campus. In primary school, I was the girl’s school captain. However, I’ve found the two roles are very, very different. This position involves a lot more of working with other people, and really being a representative for my peers. It’s really great knowing you have the council behind you, because everyone is there to support you, and knows the stress you can be under at times.

Bella Lehmann, Year 10 Year Level Leader

I decided to try out for Year Level Leader as I wanted to see what the role included, how much work was needed, and I wanted to be a voice for my year level. I had also seen all of the great ideas that the Student Council had done in 2018 and wanted to be part of it. We meet every Monday as a council and then all the leaders have their own meetings with their Year Level Wellbeing Leader. At these meetings, we’ll talk about any issues that the year levels have brought up, as well as plans to meet with Junior Campus and plan different weeks or events. This is the first leadership role I have had in a school setting, and I am really enjoying it. There is a lot of work that is involved, but I enjoy seeing how everything gets done and being part of it.

At such a high level of competition this is a fantastic effort by all the students involved! Their commitment to being in the team was outstanding, with most of the team attending the multiple training sessions that were held in the weeks leading up to the event. This was especially noticeable for the 4 x 100m Relay teams. Particular thanks to a number of students who put their hand up to fill in for the events of other students who had suffered injury or illness.

Thank you to the three students who volunteered to assist with our officiating duties on the day: Track Recorders – Georgie Smart, Bethany Hayes and Ashton Gladigau. Thank you to the parents and caregivers who travelled to support the team. Your support is much appreciated.A big thank you also goes to the PE staff for their hard work in organising the team, organising training sessions and officiating on the day.
