Upfrontby Emmanuel Legrand, Music & Media editor -in -chief

This year was heaven for magazines such as Music &Media.

Just think about it: the EMI -Warner Music merg-er and its subsequent abandonment; the AOL-TimeWarner proposal; Vivendi marrying Seagram andCanal+; Emap and GWR reshaping their organisa-tions; NRJ unsuccessfully bidding for RMC; Viva'scontinued expansion; the problems at Sony Music; acomplete shake-up of BMG's management; Bertels-mann proposing to Napster, and so on...

Such was the level of news events that M&M hasdecided to introduce this year its first ever "personal-ity/event of the year" accolade, designed to highlightthe most ground -breaking person or event of the yearin the opinion of this publication.

As far as people were concerned, there were threeserious contenders: Jean-Marie Messier, Mario Montiand Thomas Middelhoff. Messier because in less thansix months, he transformed his utilities group into anentertainment giant; Monti because his competition

department at the European Commission set theagenda in the EMI -Warner merger procedure; andMiddelhoff because he relentlessly tried to redefinehis business, not least by controversially teaming upwith Napster.

But after carefully reviewing the events of the yearwe came to the conclusion the "personality/event of2000" is...a new technology.

It was definitely the issue of file -sharing servicesthat best defined a year which produced an amazingturn of events. The significance of file -sharing anddigital downloads cannot simply be confined to thelegal battle over MP3.com, or even to the Napstercase. These technologies offer to the music industry auniversal platform on which to distribute music in adigital form-and thus radically transform tradition-al business models (see page 7).

If 2000 ushered in the age ofdigital awareness (and the year ofthe legal battle), it also opened thedoor to brand new legitimate busi-ness models which will almost cer-tainly come to fruition in the com-ing years. File -sharing representsthe way to the future-or at leastone of the ways.

"We have had a good responsefrom all parts of the industry andwe're confident that we have theirsupport," says Radioakademin'schairman Sven Lundberg.

The awards ceremony will beheld on March 8 at Stockholm'scultural centre in Nalen, and will

Nordic Web Radio starts life in Norwayby Kai R. Lofthus

OSLO - The Norwegian musicindustry is uncertain whether towelcome the November 29 debut ofNordic Web Radio (NWR), a new50/50 joint venture from NorwegianHot AC network Radio 1 and Inter-net portal Scandinavia Online.

The initial roll -out of five Inter-net -only channels on NWR's Min-Radio.com ("MyRadio.com") site, which also will serve as the domainname for yet -to -be -launched opera-tions in Sweden and Denmark, comprises B-2000 ("Today's SuperHit Music"); Boogie75 ("Soul,Funk, and Disco"); Glasnost84("New Wave and Pop"); Luna Zoo("Urban and Club"); and MustangAvenue ("Light Music and AC").

The FM feeds of the Clear Chan-nel Communications/Norsk Aller-owned Radio 1 and its affiliate sta-

tions The Voice (CHFt/Dance) andMerodi FM (soft AC) are also avail-able at MinRadio.com, along withlinks to the web streams of a num-ber of foreign music stations.

M&M understands that talkslast week between local labels'body IFPI Norway and NWR tostrike an agreement on the latter'sroyalty payments broke down, andthat record labels are now negoti-ating individually with NWR. Inthe absence of an established busi-

ness model, this is similar to thescenario in many other countrieswhere Internet -only radio is seek-ing to operate legitimately. Norwe-gian labels contacted by M&Mwere not prepared to make anypublic comment on the matter.

"We're interested in having thesame kind of dialogue with recordcompanies as traditional stationshave," says Leif Morten Synnevag, creative and programme directorat NWR. "We've contacted all rele-vant organisations and collectingsocieties and informed them aboutour activities."

The NWR site will rely on rev-enues from audio and banner adver-tising, and there will also be a facil-ity for users to stream specific songson demand and to buy these songson CD via SOL's price -comparisonshopping channel, which has linksto leading on-line retailers.

The power of file sharing:M&M's event of the year

for swapping song files online -and the furore it has causedthroughout the music indus-try-make it the clear winner of

M&M's first Event of the Year for 2000.The most well-known file -sharing

systems, such as Napster, Gnutella,Freenet et al (see panel, far right),might be the scourge of the legitimatemusic industry, but they have certain-ly caught our attention.

Basically, the format allows con-sumers to upload musical recordingson to the Net. Once online, anotheruser is free to roam the Internet land-scape to download the tracks-with-out paying a cent.

As a framework for distributingmusic to the masses, file sharingworks. Napster, the most user-friendlyversion, boasts a database of more than38 million regular users of all ages. Theworld's biggest commercial online ser-vice provider, America Online, has nomore than 25 million subscribers.

This wide appeal was not lost onBertelsmann's chairman ThomasMiddelhoff who sealed a "strategicallaince" with Napster's founderShawn Fanning. Middelhoff is plan-ning to transform Napster into a sub-scription -driven model.

"Napster was certainly the wake-up call the record labels needed,"declared US -based Darryl Franklin,VP business and legal affairs atInterscope/A&M/Geffen during theB2B Music Online 2000 conference inLondon on November 30.

However, it's the abuse of file -shar-ing technology that detractors arebattling against. According toForrester Research, file -swappingsoftware will contribute substantiallyto the $3 billion the music industryexpects to lose to piracy by 2005.

The regular exchange of musicalworks for nothing is a painful thorn inthe side of today's $40 billion interna-tional music business. But the majorrecording labels and industry organi-sations refuse to let the wound to fes-ter and spent this year hitting backwith a vengeance.

As Jay Berman, chairman and CEOof industry trade group IFPI, pointsout: "It's easy to give something away[for free]. But can you develop a legiti-mate business model from it?" On theindustry's tough response to Napsterand MP3.com, IFPI's Berman makesno apologies. "I believe that the com-panies did exactly what they needed todo, which was to try to define why, within the current legal structure inthe United States, their rights werebeing violated," he explains. "The onlything that one can say in retrospect isthat maybe the companies should havebeen there earlier with their own offer-ings, but that's a very difficult thing-it's always more difficult to create alegitimate business model, than anillegitimate business model."

    IFPI is currently developing sys-

The contentious issue of file -sharing has undoubtedly, been the main talking point for the music industry in 2000and is nominated by Music & Media as the Event of theYear. Juliana Koranteng looks at how the music industryhas responded to the advent of this new technology.

tems designed to search, track downand remove works illegally distrib-uted via the Web. There's a "need tocontinue responding to the growth ofpiracy in physical formats and devel-op tools to respond to Internet piracy,"Berman adds.

Yet, eliminate its abuse and file -sharing is considered a winning salesformat. Kevin Conroy, chief marketingofficer and president, new technologyfor BMG Entertainment, whose sistercompany BeCG (Bertelsmann e -Commerce Group) brokered thealliance with Napster, explains why.

"File sharing offers consumersease of use, a tremendous selection ofmusic from around the world and cre-ates a community for music fans," hesays. "These characteristics make filesharing a potentially important mar-keting and sales tool."

The file -sharing phenomenon isencouraging the development of sys-

tems that aim to track down musicbeing exchanged illegitimately online. They include UK -based SoundWrapand US -based CantaMetrix. Evenonline music service emusic.com hascreated a search engine that locatesits licensed songs when Napster usersexchange them without permission. Inthe New Year, UK -based Wippit.com islaunching what it describes as asecure system that enables users toswap only music files labelled withelectronic identification tags.

Berman concludes: "I think that sofar, from the perspective of the reso-lution of the MP3.com case, the proofis in the pudding and I'm confidentthat it is exactly the way the Napsterthing will turn out. We will get afavorable court decision indicatingour rights and Napster will have tofigure how to create a legitimate busi-ness model out of an idea that obvi-ously has popular appeal."

Key HappeningsThe lawsuitThe Recording Industry Associationof America (RIAA) and its members, including the five majors, suedNapster for copyright infringementlast December. Napster lost the casedespite arguing that its software didnot make unauthorised copies sincethe system only allowed consumersto exchange what they already had.The result of Napster's appeal isstill pending. In November, Napstergrabbed the headlines again afterforming an alliance with BeCG, thee -commerce unit of media giantBertelsmann. Bertelsmann agreedto drop its part of the lawsuit andencourage the other majors to do so.

The embarrassmentThe embarrassment set in whenAmerica Online (AOL) acquired

Nullsoft, a software company whosefounders also invented Gnutella. The planned merger with TimeWarner will make AOL the owner ofWarner Music Group, which hap-pens to be suing Napster. WhileAOL has asked Gnutella's founderto stop its development, thePandora's Box has already beenopened with a host of Gnutella off-shoots already in cyberspace.

The death blowScour Inc. has been forced to file forbankruptcy. Both Listen.com-which happens to be funded by thefive majors-and Liquid Audio havemade bids in the region of $5m forScour's assets. The ability to swapfull-length movies via the Scour'ssoftware unleashed the wrath ofboth the RIAA and the MPAA.

The share fileNapster(www. napstencom)Unveiled May 1999 and inventedby teenage student ShawnFanning, Napster is the mother ofall music file -sharing systems. Keyto its success is a central serverthat allows users to inform eachother about the music they own orwant. The existence of a centralserver also means the anti -piracypolice can shut it down.

Gnutella(www.gnutella.wego.com)Introduced last year and developedby Justin Frankel and Tom Pepper, who founded US software special-ist Nullsoft and invented Winampdigital music player. Technicallymore difficult to use than Napster, because there is no central serverto connect searchers of music filesto other Gnutella users. This alsomakes it difficult for anti -piracypolice to control or shut down.Gnutella's open system alsoallowed any Internet geek to cre-ate his or her own improved ver-sion. So we now have, among oth-ers, Newtella, N-tella, Bodetella,Gnotella and GNUqnutella.

Aimster(www.aimster.com)Compared with Napster andGnutella, Aimster is a closed sys-tem that allows mainly subscribersto AOL, AOL-Time Warner's portalservice, to share music files. Butthe need to be an AOL "buddy"(subscriber) means you needexplicit permission of another AOLuser before you can access therequested music file.

Freenet(www.freenet.sourceforge.net)Although still being developed,Freenet has the potential to be agreater threat to the music indus-try than Napster. Founder IanClarke, currently known as the"data anarchist." But could soon bedubbed the data antichristbecause, unlike Gnutella, Freenetguarantees complete anonymity.

Scour Exchange(www.scour.com)Launched in December 1997, thisis very similar to Napster. Butwhile the latter focuses on musicfiles, Scour enables users toexchange any type of media files, including movies.

  • YEAR IN REVIEW

Santana and Britney dominate sales chartsArtists both young-notably the unstoppableBritney Spears-and old-in the form of veteranCarlos Santana-foundsuccess in this year'scharts, when variety wasthe watchword, as SidStavenes Dove reports.

t was a Smooth, almost Supernaturalsuccess for Santana this year. Theveteran guitarist reached the peak ofhis long career with the Clive DavisA&R'ed album, released in 1999, but

which made the bulk of its impact in2000.

Supernatural (Arista/BMG) has sofar been certified five times platinumin Europe and is this year's top albumin Music & Media's year-end chart(see opposite page). It also containedthree singles (Maria Maria, Smoothand Corazon Espinado) which wereboth sales and airplay successes.Santana also tops the Artist Album-with three chart placings-and MaleArtist categories. He would also sure-ly win the "come back of the year" cat-egory, if it existed.

Aside from Santana's impressivetrack record, the year's charts weredominated by a combination of estab-lished and new artists, new sounds andmore conventional pop, continentalEuropean and Anglo-American acts.

The pop genre showed artists itsstrength with a massive sweep of thecharts not only by the Jive family ofartists (Britney Spears, BackstreetBoys, N'Sync), but also by the likes ofWestlife (RCA), Ronan Keating(Polydor) and even the Corrs (143/Lava/Atlantic), who confirmed theirinternational appeal with In Blue win-ning the Group Albums category (seepage 10). They had four albums in thecharts by over the curse of the year.

Pop phenomenonThe pop phenomenon of the year wasundoubtedly Britney Spears, who hasindeed done it again, with the year'snumber three album, number sevensingle and the winner in three cate-gories-Female Artist Albums,Female Artist Singles, and Top ArtistSingles (with no less than five titlescharting throughout the year).

Just like the previous year, therewere quite a few invitations to MoveYour Body in this year's Europeanrepertoire. Aside from the aforemen-tioned track by Italy's Eiffel 65,Mousse T and Welsh veteran TomJones got the best of the dancefloorwith Sex Bomb (Gut/V2).

Significantly, the much covetedposition at the top of the year-endSingles chart is occupied by aEuropean act, Finnish sensationBomfunk MC's, with Freestyler(Epidrome/Sony). The band also topthe Group Singles and ContinentalArtists Singles categories. OtherEuropean winners include France'sModjo, UK's Sonique and the mighty

Vengaboys from the Netherlands.Anastacia also made an impressive

European debut this year, with I'mOutta Love (Epic), M&M's numberfour single of 2000. Sony may havehad a tough year, yet they managed tobreak two significant new acts inBomfunk MC's and Anastacia.

British guitar rock is representedby Travis, Coldplay, Radiohead andOasis. The new wave of British acts, including Craig David and DavidGray, is starting to build following intheir homeland and abroad.

Overall, it was a year without amajor seller but with consistent salesfrom established acts such as Bon Jovi,Whitney Houston, Red Hot ChiliPeppers, Madonna, and Moby, whoenjoyed one of the most outstandingsuccesses of the year with Play (Mute). M&M's year-end charts are com-piled by adding the number of points

accumulated by each title (album orsingle) during its charting life in theEurochart Hot 100 Singles and theEuropean Top 100 Albums charts. This system, which gives a snapshotof the year, tends to favour albumswith a long shelflife such as the RedHot Chili Peppers' Californication, rather than albums with very strongsales in a small period of time. Thisexplains why The Beatles' 1 is onlyplaced at number 46, as it only had afour -week chart presence when thecompilation was calculated.

Pop is flavour of the year on European radiopop, in its various different guises, was theindisputable flavour of the first year of the ' newmillennium on European radio.

Whereas last year's top of the pops was the Cheiron-produced Britney Spears' smash hit Baby One More Time(Jive), this year's of pop are The Corrs. The Irish group are now firmly established on radio, andBreathless spent an incredible 23 weeks in the chart-five of which at number one-before it was outplayed byIrresistible (both 143/Lava/Atlantic).

Madonna has grazed on the radiochart with permanent presence for threeyears. In 2000, American Pie(Maverick/Warner) spent 23 weeks inMOTs European Radio Top 50 airplaychart and came second in M&M year-endairplay compilation chart (see page 13).The track managed five non-consecutiveweeks in the number one spot, regularlyswapping positions with All Saints' PureShores (London), the fifth most playedtrack on European radio this year.Madonna's Music has so far spent 19weeks in the radio top 50, whereas Don'tTell Me (both Maverick/Warner) is thecurrent number one.

As in 1999, almost half of the songsin the chart come from US signings.Continued output from acts such asBritney Spears, Backstreet Boys andBon Jovi combined with the return ofSantana-who featured heavily onplaylists with the hits Maria Maria,Smooth and Corazon Espinado (allArista)-and fellow Latinos RickyMartin and Enrique Iglesias, keep thepercentage high. At the other end ofthe spectrum, the likes of Eros Ramazzotti's Fuoco NelFuoco (Ariola) at 82 and Paola & Chiara's Vamos ABailar at 91, both enjoyed support from radio acrossEurope despite being sung in Italian.

2000 was also the year that brought UK garage toEurope. Craig David's 7 Days (Telstar) is still in thechart after 18 weeks, and Artful Dodger's radio hits Re -Rewind and Movin' Too Fast have now been followed byPlease Don't Ttirn Me On (all ffrr) into the radio top 50.Accessible dance continued to be a radio favourite duringthe year, thanks to continental European successes suchas Modjo's Lady (Hear Me Tonight) (Barclay), Spiller's

Groovejet (Positiva) and Fragma's Toca's Miracle (GangGo Music) bouncing from the Ibiza summer season intothe dark European autumn.

This year also surprisingly brought a wave of Finnishmusic to the airwaves. Bomfunk MC's Freestyler(Epidrome) spent 16 weeks in the radio top 50, and is alsothe fourth most played single in the year-end BorderBreakers chart. Darude's Sandstorm (16 Inch Records)was a huge summer hit and HIM's Join Me (RCA) is atnumber 11 in the Border Breakers chart.

Border Breakers are singles by con-tinental European signings which scoreairplay on stations outside their coun-try of signing, so this chart is directlyrelated to a record's ability to cross bor-ders and appeal to an audience beyondits home market.

Eagle -Eye Cherry tops the chartwith Are You Still Having Fun?, whichis also the 20th most played record onEuropean radio in 2000. The SwedishNew Yorker also topped the BorderBreakers chart in 1998, with SaveTonight (both Diesel).

Last year Sweden had 29 tracks inthe year-end Border Breakers chart, but this time it only has 16. But forevery loser there must be a winner, andthat accolade goes to Germany, thebiggest country with 21 entries. A -ha,French Affair, ATC, Sasha andReamonn all contribute to total.Meanwhile Dutch dance acts had theirusual impact, with Vengaboys, AliceDeejay and Rednex leading the way.

France had a remarkable year withno less than 14 titles charting in the

Top 100 Border Breakers, most of them from the elec-tronica genre, including Modjo's No.1 European hit Lady(Hear Me Tonight) (Barclay), Daft Punk's One More Time(Virgin), Superfunk's Lucky Star (Labels/Virgin) and BobSinclar's I Feel For You (Yellow/East West).

Norway's three tracks in last year's year-end chartamazingly all reappear in 2000: Where I'm Headed,Unforgivable Sinner, and Sitting Down Here, all byVirgin's Lene Marlin, are all still spinning on Europeanradio stations, with the latter just sneaking into theyear-end radio top 100.

  • A year of quality AND quantityMake no mistake, 2000 hasproved a bumper year forcontemporary music.Quality and quantityhave been evident in

equal measure and even combined onalbums by the likes of U2 (UniversalIsland) and Eminem (Interscope).

Every year spawns new move-ments and 2000 was no different. Inthe UK, garage evolved from theunderground onto national airwavesand into the charts under the expertguidance of Artful Dodger (FFRR) andpin-up singer Craig David (Wildstar).Across the Channel, French electroni-ca found itself at the top of theEurochart Hot 100 thanks to Modjo(Barlcay/Universal) and Daft Punk(Virgin). Meanwhile St Germain(Blue Note/EMI) came up with one ofthe albums of the year and Madonnaendorsed the genre by hiring the pro-duction talents of Mirwais (Naive) forMusic (Maverick/Warner Bros).

    I Music review 2000

    International Heavyweights

Eminem(Interscope)His name is...we know already! MarshallMathers, aka Slim Shady, aka Eminem, has managed to achieve what few US rap-pers have done before and that's crackEurope (M&M, issue 30). The break-through came with The Real Slim Shadysingle which followed the million -sellingMy Name Is and went top 10 in eight of themajor territories on the Continent andnumber one on the Eurochart Hot 100.The single was taken from The MarshallMathers LP which itself went to numberone on the European Top 100 Albumschart and spawned a potential Christmasnumber one single in the UK with Stan.Interscope puts the rapper's phenomenalcrossover appeal down to his colourfulvideos and rebellious lyrics, but the fact heis also the first credible white rapper has, ironically, played a part in gaining accep-tance on the Continent.

Bon Jovi(Mercury/Universal)Big hair, big choruses, big sales. Not a lot'schanged in Bon Jovi's world since theyfirst hit the big time back in the '80s in aflash of tight trousers and hairspray. Thisyear they celebrated 17 years in the busi-ness and worldwide sales of 80 millionwith the release of Crush, UniversalMusic's biggest release since its mergerwith PolyGram and the band's first albumfor five years (M&M, issue 23). It wentstraight in at number one in the EuropeanTop 100 Albums having topped six majorterritories in its first week, and has soldthree million copies to date in Europealone.

Moby(Mute)Although released in 1999, Play byAmerican dance maestro Moby deservesrecognition in this year-end issue forstorming back into the European Top 100Albums at number 3 in May, 2000 (M&M,issue 20). Impressively it remains in thetop 30 having gone three times platinumand spending over 50 weeks on the chart.

2000 was a millennium year for many acts. AdamHoworth looks back without anger while M&M writersreview the performances of some of the year's mostremarkable successes.

Gently bubbling under the surfaceis the alternative country -folk frater-nity-featuring Badly Drawn Boy(Twisted Nerve/XL), Grandaddy (V2),Elliott Smith (Dreamworks) andLowgold (Nude)-who should shapethe landscape for guitar music overthe next 12 months. Over in the US,sportz metal of the variety peddled byLimp Bizkit (Interscope), Slipknot(Roadrunner) and the BloodhoundGang (Geffen) was not only makingthe transition to European radio butfilling arenas at the same time. Thebiggest US export east though wasrap in the form of the prodigalEminem, who became one of the firstartist in history to take the genre tothe top of the charts across Europe.

Outside of the US, Germany has provedthe biggest market for Moby, second tothe UK, but every major European terri-tory has come on board for the artist andhis independent English label Mute.Moby's skill is in blurring the boundariesbetween dance, rock and pop while pro-ducing an end product that is equally asappealing to each market. A string of big -selling, atmospheric singles-Why DoesMy Heart Feel So Bad?, Porcelain andNatural Blues-and a triumphant liveappearance at Privilege in Ibiza have con-firmed Moby as a suitably eclectic star fora new century.

U2(Island)Not only do they have arguably the bestmanager in the business, U2 this year ben-efitted from being on the biggest label inthe world behind the launch of their newalbum All That You Can't Leave Behind(M&M, issue 48). The result saw the bandsell five million copies in less than twoweeks and go to number one in 31 differ-ent countries-an achievement their man-ager Paul McGuinness told M&M heranked as the pinnacle of his career todate. Still working the first single off thealbum, Beautiful Day, the band will start aworld tour in the US next March, in a cam-paign their manager believes should spana further five singles, taking them throughto Christmas 2001.

Radiohead(Parlophone)The follow-up to OK Computer-regardedby many in the industry as one of thegreatest albums of all time-was alwaysgoing to be a stiff challenge. Radiohead'sresponse was to change their formula andadopt an avant garde, piece meal approachto constructing music that left criticsdivided. Their supporters saw Kid A as atriumph of invention over staid guitarmusic while their detractors regarded thealbum as an easy cop out by a band thathad run out of melodic ideas. Consumerson the other hand bought the record in

The year in pictures (from top):Eminem, Moby, Limp Bizkit,Britney Spears, Madonna.'

Winners in the "where did theycome from?" category includeAmerican singer Anastacia with I'mOutta Love (Epic), UK guitar slingersColdplay with Parachutes(Parlophone), and Finnish actsDarude with dance classic and debutsingle Sandstorm (16 Inch Record)and chart toppers Bomfunk MC's(Epidrome/Sony).

2000 was also the year of the bigcomeback. Bon Jovi returned afterfive years and went straight to the topof the European charts with Crush(Mercury). U2 did the same with AllThat You Can't Leave Behind, whileRadiohead exceeded all expectationswith their eagerly -awaited fourthalbum Kid A (Parlophone) which not

only dominated European charts butalso took the top spot in the US.

Other big hitters who maintainedtheir profiles as truly global acts wereMadonna, The Corrs with In Blue(143/Lava/Atlantic), and the ubiqui-tous Britney Spears who replicatedthe success of Baby One More Time byrecording a similar sounding follow-up in the form of Oops!...I Did ItAgain (Jive). In a year when everyonefrom Poptones CEO Alan McGee toGeorge Michael and Bono werebemoaning the seeming omnipotenceof pure pop, two of its finest examplesRobbie Williams and Kylie Minoguehit the top of the charts both indepen-dently and together on the duet Kids(Chrysalis).

All in all quite a year and, with mil-lions upon millions of units shifted andstyles as diverse as St Germain andAlejandro Sanz (WEA) enjoying com-mercial currency, popular music movesinto 2001 with a clean bill of health.

droves, despite there being no singlerelease, taking it high into the top 10 in 14of the key European markets in its firstweek of release and straight in at numbertwo in the European Top 100 Albums.Famously, Kid A also took the act fromOxford in England to the top of theBillboard 200 in the US.

Limp Bizkit(Interscope)On the back of six million sales in the US,Limp Bizkit dented Europe with their sec-ond album Significant Other. Initially lin-gering in the lower reaches of theEuropean Top 100 Albums chart, therecord shot up to number seven in Julyafter both radio and TV picked up on thesingle Take A Look Around which doubledas the soundtrack to Hollywood block-buster Mission Impossible 2. The Bizkit'sthird album Chocolate Starfish And TheHotdog Flavored Water peaked at numberone in M&M's album chart in November.Current single My Generation went on salein October and the forthcoming Rollin' willbe in the shops in January.

Britney Spears(Jive)Teen star Britney has shown this year thatshe is far from a one -hit wonder with hersecond album Oops!...I Did It Again mir-roring the success of Baby One More Time. The title track went to number one in theEurochart Hot 100 prior to the albumlaunch in Paris in May (M&M, issue 21),then the album itself took the top spot asdid follow-up single Lucky. Current singleStronger is enjoying enormous supportfrom radio. Britney's European tour thisautumn also ensured the singer was neverfar from the limelight in Europe for long.Britney even has a Christmas present forher followers-she features on the compi-lation album Platinum Christmas with thetrack My Only Wish (This Year).

Madonna(Maverick/Warner Bros)After her successful collaboration with UKdance producer William Orbit, Madonnarepeated the formula with French elec-tronica whizzkid Mirwais. The result wasMusic which, released in September, had

  • YEAR IN REVIEW

sold over 12 million units worldwide attime of press. The video to accompany thesingle Music was on heavy rotation onMTV and on domestic TV music channels. Her live performances at the MTV EuropeAwards in Stockholm and, triumphantly,at the Brixton Academy in London weretwo masterly crafted marketing strokesthat helped push the album back into thehigher levels of the charts. It capped ayear when her cover of Don MacLean'sAmerican Pie also reached number one inthe Eurochart Hot 100 Singles, despite aless than rapturous reception from critics, but with strong support from Europeanradio.

    European Champions

Anastacia(Epic)Coupling an authentic '70s R&B vocal per-formance with an MTV friendly face,Anastacia Newkirk took Europe by stormthis summer (M&M, issue 44). Under thedirection of Epic executive VP DaveMassey in New York, Anastacia dominatedthe Eurochart Hot 100 Singles with debutrelease I'm Outta Love and sold over onemillion units of her album Not That Kindon the Continent within its first threemonths of release. She also topped the sin-gles charts in Australia and dented the UKtop ten in September. Epic's Europeanoffices put her success down to a majornew talent singing a great song and-importantly-promotional access to theartist. If Epic can replicate Anastacia'sEuropean success in her domestic marketin 2001, the likes of Britney and Madonnawill have new a rival.

    Coldplay

M&M first alerted its readership to thetalents of young London four -pieceColdplay back in the Spring New TalentSpotlight (M&M, issue 15). At the timethey had released just two singles TheBlue Room EP and Bigger Stronger, bothof which displayed an effortless gift with amelody combined with some deft guitarwork, without troubling the chart watch-ers too much. After some triumphant festi-val appearances, Coldplay topped the UKsingles and album charts with Yellow andParachutes respectively, the latter peakingat number 12 on the European Top 100Albums. In the space of 12 months theband have gone from being unknown toone of the largest live draws in the UK. IfEMI can keep the momentum up with therelease of the act's sophomore album,Coldplay can join Travis in carrying theflag for British guitar music.

Badly Drawn Boy(Twisted Nerve/XL)Another indie act that's gone from obscuri-ty to widespread acclaim in 2000 isManchester's Damon Gough, aka BadlyDrawn Boy (MM, issues 32 & 39).Ploughing similar acoustic, country tingedfurrows as Elliott Smith, BDB crossedover on the back of his Mercury MusicPrize-winning debut album The Hour OfBewilderbeast. Renowned for the oftenextended length of his live shows, theBadly Drawn Boy album offers similargood value for money featuring 18 trackswith a distinctive, uncontrived feel tothem. Despite the oxygen of publicity theMercury Music Prize generates, the wool-ly -hatted Gough has not seen huge salesfor The Hour Of Bewilderbeast. However, the feeling at the Beggars Banquet -ownedXL label is these are still early days for anartist whose songwriting is already beingcompared to the likes of Beck and JohnLennon.

Eros Ramazzotti(BMG)Eros Ramazzotti has succeeded wheremany Italian artists have failed-to gainpan-European success (M&M, issue 45).This year's album Stilelibero (BMG/Ariola)has consolidated his popularity, withEuropean sales topping the 1.7 millionmark. the album has maintained a con-stant top five position in M&M's EuropeanTop 100 Albums since its release at the endof October and all of this a full three yearsafter his last studio album, ErosRamazzotti. The Roman artist has workedhard to achieve this level of popularity, having recorded his first single fully 18years ago. UK Garage2000 was the year that garage emergedfrom the UK underground of clubs andpirate radio to achieve chart success(M&M, issue 17). The ball began rollinglast year with The Artful Dodger's Re -Rewind (Public Demand) and gainedmomentum this year with hits such asSweet Female Attitude's Flowers (WEA),MJ Cole's Crazy Love (Talkin' Loud) andThe Architects' Body Groove (Go!Beat), allof which featured strongly in M&M'sEurochart. French ElectronicaMusic sounds better when it's from Francethese days...Madonna-an expert in latch-ing on to the music vibe of the times-hadalready sent the right signal by teamingwith composer/producer Mirwais on Music. But with two number one hit singles atopof the Eurochart Hot 100 this year, Modjo'sLady (Barclay/Universal) and Daft Punk'sOne More Time (Labels/Virgin), Frenchelectronica has made an impressive returnto form and proven that the 1997-98 wavespearheaded by Daft Punk and Air was nota fad (M&M, issue 47). The success of the"French touch" is not limited to the afore-mentioned. Names as Bob Sinclar (Yellow/Eastwest), Benjamin Diamond (Epic),Etienne de Crecy (V2), Mirwais (Naive),Mellow (Atmospheriques), Saint Germain(Blue Note/EMI), veteran DJ LaurentGamier (F Comm.) and many others havecarried the flag outside their native coun-try during 2000. 2001 is likely to fuel thecurrent tidal wave, with albums due fromAir, Daft Punk and Modjo, among others, set to groove the world.

  • YEAR IN REVIEW

A year of all shapes and sizesEMI/Warner +AOL/Time WarnerOn paper it made sense to marryWarner and EMI and create thebiggest music group in the world. Butthe promoters of the project neveranticipated that it would receive somany negative reactions-not leastfrom European regulators-and thatten months after trumpeting the deal, the parties had to face the humilia-tion of having to "withdraw" their pro-posal, such was the level of reserva-tion for the plans. That a few people, like Frenchman Patrick Zelnik orindies' organisation Impala, did a lotto derail the course of the actionwould come as no consolation. In theend, Time Warner decided to sacrificethe EMI deal to secure a much morestrategic-and financially attrac-tive-deal with AOL. The AOL/TimeWarner entity prefigures the compa-nies of the 21st Century, combiningcontent and distribution platforms.

The importance ofBrussels confirmedOn a number of occasions, Europeanpolicy -makers and regulators madedecisions which had a direct effect onthe music industry, confirming thestatus of Brussels as the real centre ofpower in the European Union. However, one of the ways it expressedthis power came as one of the biggestdisappointments of the year for themusic industry, because despiteadvances there was still no vote of aCopyright Directive which hasalready been four years in the mak-ing. A final text should eventually bevoted on by the Parliament at thebeginning of 2001. Also in the worksis the Directive on e -commerce which,at some levels, remains unsatisfyingin terms of protection for rights own-ers, while in December Brusselsunveiled the first draft of a Directiveon piracy, which will introduce protec-tion for right owners and penalties foroffenders.

But it's in the area of competitionthat the sword of the EC has beenfelt, as Mario Monti's department hasbeen scrutinising the proposed merg-ers of EMI/Warner Music, AOL/TimeWarner and Vivendi/Seagram/Canal+. While the latter two wentthrough the process with just a fewundertakings, the former was with-drawn when it appeared thatEuropean regulators would veto theproposal.

NRJ backs out of RMC dealThe acquisition of the financiallytroubled full -service station RMC wasbound to transform NRJ Group intothe indisputable leading radio compa-ny in France, but things turned outdifferently. Because of a new census, the parameters used to monitor own-ership had changed and would havepushed NRJ Group's properties wayover the ceiling of 150 million poten-tial listeners if the acquisition had
