The Himalayan Kingdom has a lot to offer to its discerning

travelers. The pious and spiritual are mesmerized by the

magnificent temples, and others are just in awe of its architecture,

especially in Kathmandu, which is full of examples of old and

intricate architecture. Other places of interest in Nepal are the

tourist streets of Pokhara and trekking in the Himalayan region.

KathmanduKathmandu in Nepal is a popular “traveler’s choice” because of its

rich scenic beauty and cultural heritage. Volunteering Solutions

has many international volunteering opportunities in Kathmandu.

There is a summer volunteer program which is a mix of travel and

volunteering opportunities. In our other programs- Orphanage

Volunteer work at an Orphanage is one of the most challenging and

rewarding experience for the volunteers whereby they can render

invaluable support to the orphanage and children centers. The

orphanages lack the resources and volunteer help is very much

appreciated.

VolunteersVolunteers working in the Orphanage Work Program in Nepal will

render invaluable help by giving love and affection to the children, act

as an older sibling to the children, teaching them basic conversational

English, helping them in their school subjects, guiding them about

personal hygiene and sanitation, taking them out on small excursions

and engaging them in extracurricular activities and doing

administrative work with the Orphanage staff.

Volunteers participating in the Teaching English Program will teach

English at local Nepalese public or private schools which are short of

staff and are in need of regular volunteers. Tourism is a major industry

in Nepal and knowledge of English is very important to get good jobs.

OurOur volunteers mainly play the role of teacher assistants and are also

sometimes required to teach a class on their own. Volunteering as an

English Teacher is a great way to gain valuable work experience

abroad. Volunteers should have good English speaking abilities and

lots of enthusiasm to work with children. Starting with basics of the

language, the kids can be delighted if they are able to learn simple,

short sentences which enables them to understand English and

expressexpress themselves in the same language. Volunteers also assist the

local staff of the schools and evolve new ways of teaching in a play-way

method.

So, why do I have to pay for volunteering abroad? I mean, I want to help them and all and still I will have to pay? That is a

common question people ask. People often forget that volunteering is never free. Volunteering Abroad is definitely a choice,

and when you choose to do so, you have to pay. For what? For your airfare, for your lodgings, for your meals, for local com-

mute, airport transfer, for your project placement tie-ups! There is more in the list, but again, all of us dread the word "pro-

gram fee"

So, we thought we should simplify it for you. Your program fee solely aims to provide you comfort, while you volunteer

abroad. It is structured to meet your most basic needs.

Most people are surprised to hear that they have to pay to volunteer abroad. What they often do not realize is that there

are significant administrative costs involved to arrange for a worthwhile volunteer abroad placement. Volunteering Solu-

tions is not supported by any government funding and runs its programs entirely from the fee that volunteers pay to take

part in the volunteer programs. Volunteering Abroad, involves incurring of many costs such as food, accommodation,

transportation, transfers, project selection etc. The program fee charged by us, goes into providing you all these services.

The money that you pay to us is distributed at various stages to provide you a meaningful volunteer abroad experience. The money that you pay to us is distributed at various stages to provide you a meaningful volunteer abroad experience.

It is necessary for an organization to employ full time staff to recruit and manage volunteers. There is lot of work that goes

side by side ensuring that you are supported before and during your program. We are dedicated to make your volunteering

abroad a memorable experience and ward off of all possible hunches at every steps. Our administration cost is 28% of the

total cost which include advertising, staff salary, website maintenance, taxes, volunteer recruitment and other expenses.

The application processing fee is part of your administrative costs, unlike many other volunteer travel company we do not

chargecharge any additional credit card processing fee. These companies can charge as much as 6% on your application fee taking

it to a difference of almost $100 extra. We have a flat rate and that is what we charge.

Administration

You may be endowed with exceptional skills and acumen in your area of expertise but to figure out your exact role in the

placement agency and to gain insights of its operations require training. To know cultural practices and etiquettes is of sub-

lime importance to carry out your tasks. So you need someone who could impart training and dispel your doubts at every

step, obviously he/she doubles as your friend and trainer.

Good grasp of the local language is an added advantage that helps you to communicate effectively and learn the culture

promptly so in some cases they also assign language trainers to help you out who is paid by program provider.

Training and orientation

We charge for food and accommodation based on your preferences. You may decide to do home stay or group accommo-

dation or relish the cuisines cooked by host family and pay them. You may cook for yourself if you find it economical or your

placement organization may provide you lunch. You have plethora of options to choose from and charges are determined

accordingly. Host organization provides a safe and welcoming atmosphere for the volunteers. Food and accommodation

charges cover 40% of your total expenditure.

Food and accommodation

Volunteer service organization often employs in-country staff to provide local support and to make your volunteering

abroad experience memorable. As long as you are volunteering outside which may take up to six months, our staff is con-

tinuously working for you behind the screen. So we pay them from program fees we receive despite other sources like

grants and donations.

NothingNothing can be more discomforting than to struggle for getting basic services like healthcare, banking or even visa review-

ing in a foreign land that otherwise would have been comparatively less difficult in an English speaking country. As a volun-

teer, you have not been tied up to the agency only but you may roam around the city to watch historical places, zoo, movies

etc. and should have total access to everything in order to distress yourself. VolSol has incredible in-country support

(around 12%) to ensure your trip runs smoothly.

In country support

The most important part of the volunteering fees is on the project which you have chosen. Program fees help fund the proj-

ect activities and resources. Thus organizations need paid staff member to ensure continuity of your program and adminis-

trative duties. Project development involved 11% of the total program fee.

Chitwan “heart of the Jungle” is located in south west of Kathmandu. Chitwan was established in 1973, which was awarded

UNESCO world heritage status in 1984. Elephant riding and thick forest having a diverse selection of wildlife, are highlights

of this park and attract thousands of tourists each year. Nepal's oldest national park, Chitwan is home to endangered

Bengal tigers, one-horned rhinos and crocodiles, and more than 450 species of birds. Visitors can explore the park on

elephants or in a safari vehicle. The best time to visit Chitwan is between October and February (so that monsoon season

and very high temperatures can be avoided).

Go on safari at Chitwan National Park

The most iconic attraction in Nepal and one of the world’s most daring feats, Mount Everest is the ultimate test of physical

endurance for climbers and hikers. It is said that climbing to the Everest Base Camp requires a lot of training to reach a very

high level of fitness. However, if you can’t make it to the summit or even base camp, you can view its glory from the window

of a plane. Most domestic airlines provide scenic flights, which are available from Pokhara and other locations. So just fly

into Kathmandu and hook up with a local experienced Sherpa guide who will lead you towards the ‘roof of the world’.

Explore the Everest Region

Namche is a busy working tourist town. There are a large number of lodges and numerous restaurants, cafes and even a

couple of delicious bakeries. There is a post office, telephone facilities, internet, and health facilities. It is worth visiting the

weekly market, where traders from Tibet sell their wares (often Chinese goods) in exchange for Nepali and Indian food and

goods brought up from Lukla by lowland porters. You’ll catch more than a glimpse of Sherpa life as well as visitors from all

over the globe.

Relax in Namche Bazaar

One thing that every traveler love when visiting a new place….. is FOOD! Here visitors can enjoy the authentic cuisines in

Nepali restaurants. Many restaurants of Kathmandu and Pokhara offer traditional song and dance performances by local

artists. The delicious King’s Curd of Bhaktapur, Momos with various fillings and Dal bhat praised as the best street food in

Nepal, will not be found anywhere else.

Taste Diverse Cuisines

There are many specialized ayurvedic clinics, meditation centers and yoga classes in Kathmandu, Lumbini and other tourist

cities in Nepal, which will help you to achieve the different dimensions of health-physically and mentally. It also open up the

mind for greater relaxation and awareness, all within the beautiful natural environment provided by the Himalayas.

Tejal Ladha, 25-year-old HR and Admin Manager, volunteered in Nepal with

Volunteering Solutions during year 2011. She is from Nairobi, Kenya and at-

tended school at Oshwal Academy. Her hobbies include: mountaineering,

swimming, Taekwondo, photography, camping, soccer, and basketball.

Meet Tejal Ladha

Since I was going to be mountaineering for nearly 2 months, I decided to make my volunteering schedule short and I enrolled for

"volunteering at a local orphanage for 1 week program," which by the way I regret sincerely for not extending.

My day to day activities were as follows:

Early morning - help out the children get ready for school, so I'd help them put on their clothes, do there hair ,make sure all the books and

lunch tins were in there bags. This particular orphanage, Save Lives Foundation, had early morning English tuition's so I'd help the

children out with the extra help offered to them by the organisation.

OnceOnce the children left for school, the house help and I would wash and iron their clothes, clean up their rooms, arrange the shelves in the

study room and practically tidy the place up before they arrived back in the evening. As soon as the kids got back from school they'd have

supper, which was prepared earlier on, and then they all get together in the study room where they have a tutor come in and help with

their homework, so I'd help out too.

OnceOnce they are through with all the school work they get together and sing, dance and play outside. This other volunteer who was there at

the same time as I was would join in and play along. Just before bedtime we'd chat and get to know the different personalities of the

children and they'd read their story books, we'd exchange our personal experiences of life and share some of our pictures with them,

which they loved.

The children have karate classes once or twice a week, the trained "OM" would come and the children loved it. They trained for about an

hour and so did I.

Describe your day to day activities as a volunteer.

The specialty about volunteering abroad was the hospitality both with the locals and the unique host Uma at Save Lives Foundation. The

warmth, homely feeling and the respect that I experienced from all the children and the team there will be cherished my whole life.

Uma, the host, was not just a mother to all the children but was so friendly with all the volunteers. Being a vegetarian, I was unsure in the

start that I'd get proper food but she proved me wrong and made sure she made food for me that was served to me separately. The tiny

little things she remembered about me made me realize that I was not a guest but was and will always be a part of the family at Save Lives

Foundation.

What made this volunteer experience unique and special?
