April Showers bring eh … Snow Showers?

As tax day dawned on April 15th in middle Tennessee we were greeted with a

wintery mix of sleet and show showers. Now I know to you folks who live

above the Mason-Dixon line that this is not so uncommon of an occurrence. In

fact, Andre Chretien told me that the snow in Gaspe, Quebec does not melt

until about May 15th. However, looking from my office that morning gave me

a feeling of being trapped inside a freakish snow globe especially since it had

been in the upper sixties over the weekend!

Although not wishing to sound like the tax man, we still have a few members

who have not renewed their dues for 2014. Jack has sent follow-up letters to

make sure your dues have not been lost in the mail. If there is a particular rea-

son the you have for not renewing with regards to the club itself please let me

know. For those who have not renewed, this will be the last Edseletter you will

receive by mail.

Moving on to summer activities, I hope everyone is holding the third week in

July on their schedule open to attend our 46th annual rally in Corning, New

York. This promises to be a great time and the New York Chapter has worked

hard to put on a great show.

And finally, on a more somber note, our club has lost a great American hero

with the passing of longtime member Buddy Spivey of Little Rock, Arkansas.

Having risen to the rank of Captain in the U.S. Marine Corps, Bubby was blind-

ed and lost his right leg in an explosion in Vietnam in 1966. Many will remem-

ber his black 1960 Ranger convertible with white top, red and silver interior,

and continental kit. I first met Buddy in 1978 and got to drive his convertible

from the EOC meet in Indianapolis to our meet being held in my hometown of

Nashville. Buddy always called me “BR-549”. I had the opportunity to talk

with Buddy at numerous Edsel rallies over the years. Everyone who met him

was impressed with him and I know he will truly be missed me and others in

our club.

Nashville Glass: During the three day interim between returning to Nash-

ville with Buddy’s car and Thursday’s beginning of the Nashville rally

activities in 1978, we drove my ’58 Hee Haw car, my ’59 and Buddy’s ’60

to the Ford Glass Plant where my father worked to pose all three years of

Edsels in front of the main office. Glass in each of these cars had been

manufactured at the Nashville Glass Plant. Unbeknown to us, Mr. Bill

Kemath, the plant general manager and my dad’s boss, saw the cars from

his office window and came out with the plant photographer to make pho-

tographs. He told us that his first job with Ford was to design the molds to

produce the vertical 1960 Edsel taillight chrome housings in Sandusky,

Ohio. He asked to get a photo of himself in the ’60 since he had worked on

the design of those parts and that's me seated on the passenger’s side.

The Dan King family and friend Jerry Aldridge with Dan’s Citation hardtop at the 50th

Annual Darryl Starbird Rod & Custom Show in Tulsa, OK. Below: Customized

Roundup owned by Floyd Dutton featured ‘59 Mercury headlights, chrome hood scoops

and forward swept door window frames similar to the ‘55-57 Chevy Nomad wagons.

As many of you know, Darryl Starbird is a custom car and hot rod designer and builder,

known for his innovative and futuristic space-age car designs, especially his bubble tops.

In the late 1950s and early 1960s, Darryl Starbird was among the top automobile design-

ers and artists including Ed “Big Daddy” Roth, George Barris (designer of the first Bat-

mobile), Norm Grabowski, and Dean Jeffries. Along with Rock & Roll music, drag rac-

ing and hot rods were a big part of popular American culture, and these guys routinely

had their cars featured in Hot Rod Magazine, which, as a teenager I loved to read and

dream about some day having my own hot rod. Probably you did, too.

This past February 14th – 16th was the 50th anniversary of the Darryl Stabird Tulsa Rod &

Custom Show. I’ve been participating in this show for the last six or seven years.

Among the over 1,000 cars on display this year were my ’48 Dodge and ’58 Edsel. I

sincerely hope that I have not left out anyone from our club who may have been there as

well, but I did not notice anyone else. Some of the featured cars were Starbird’s latest

bubble top creation the “Moonbird”, an extensively customized ‘57 Cadillac Brougham

nicknamed “The Shark”, and a large display of Bubble Topped cars. The “Go For the

Gold” Fine Nine top prize was $10,000 in cash. One of the Fine Nine contestants was a

’58 Edsel Roundup station wagon presented by Floyd Dutton, who lives in Harrah, OK.

A good time is what everyone had at this year’s 50th anniversary rod & custom show.

I’ll be back again next year for sure.

Edsel Convertible Top Vinyl Project! IEC member Bill Brzoza of New York has located an original supplier of the 1958-1959 Edsel and

1957-1959 Ford convertible top material to Ford Motor Company. Many who own a 1958 or 1959

convertible will know that the original top material

had a pin-point pattern vinyl outer layer in the ap-propriate exterior color of the top with a tan cloth

material sandwiched underneath. If Bill can get ten

orders for white tops then the company that made these top years ago will make a special run of the

vinyl and cloth combination material. Once the

order for white material is complete then a second run of black top material may be made. For more
