The guestspeaker at this year’sbanquet will be ScottSeu, P.E., VicePresident, EnergyResources and Operations, of HawaiianElectric. He will speak on the state of cleanenergy in Hawaii, the challenges and opportu-nities we have before us, and the role each ofus needs to play as we continue on the path toa clean energy future.

At Hawaiian Electric, Mr. Seu has executiveresponsibility for planning, renewable energycontracting, deployment of new energy tech-nologies, and operation of the Oahu electricgrid. He has been with the company for twentyyears, serving in the environmental, customerinstallations, and energy project developmentareas, and over the last five years has helpedto lead Hawaiian Electric’s clean energy trans-formation strategy. In this capacity, he hasplayed an active role in many of the renewableenergy projects that now dot our islands.

In addition to his work at Hawaiian Electric,Mr. Seu serves on the boards of the BishopMuseum and Hale Kipa, and is Chair of theDean’s Council of the University of Hawaii atManoa College of Engineering. He is a pastpresident of the Hawaii Society of ProfessionalEngineers (HSPE), and continues to serve asan officer for the HSPE EducationalFoundation. He received both Bachelor’s andMaster’s degrees in mechanical engineeringfrom Stanford University, and is a proud gradu-ate of the Kamehameha Schools.

Engineers Week Begins atPearlridge Center

Engineers Week will begin in Honolulu at thePearlridge Center. Static engineering exhibitswill be on display at Uptown Center Court fromSaturday, February 15 through Monday,February 17, 2014.

On February 16, 2014, Center Court willcome alive with the first Hawaii VEX IQ StateChampionship among qualified elementaryand middle school teams. The Hawaii Councilof Engineering Societies and Pearlridge Centerwith the support of the Pearl City High Schooland Highlands Intermediate School RoboticsTeams, will sponsor the HCES PearlridgeHawaii VEX IQ State Championship(http://www.robotevents.com/robot-competi-tions/vex-iq-challenge/hawaii-vex-iq-state-championship.html) as part of the 2014Engineering Week in Hawaii. Eighteen VEX IQteams which qualified through earlier regionaltournaments will be competing for four slots forthe World VEX IQ Championships to be held atthe Anaheim Convention Center in April 2014.

DECEMBER HIGHLIGHTS: CHRISTMASCAROLING – It was another successful activityfor the organization in spreading the spirit ofthe Holidays, and at the same time maintainingour tradition of merriment and camaraderie thatalways keep the FALEA singers & carolersbusy at year-end. Thanks to Suzie Agraan &the Board of Directors for their efforts onceagain to keep our “clients” happy & keep upwith their timely support & donations.CHRISTMAS BANQUET – This was held at thePacific Beach Hotel’s Grand Ballroom onDecember 15 & highlighted the final year-endactivity for 2013. Angie Armas & the BanquetCommittee did a very commendable jobputting the program together for yet anotherhappy ending to the organization’s wide varietyof year-round activities. Current PresidentJeoffrey Cudiamat gave his welcome remarks& introduced the Emcee for the evening. RenieAgsalda, a past president, did the invocation.The entertainment following dinner consistedof two solo ballroom dance performances, anda group dance routine performed by membersof the Kapolei Chapter of the Hawaii BallroomDance Association. The FALEA carolers alsoserenaded the audience with their repertoire ofChristmas songs. Joey Resurreccion onceagain had put together a video presentation ofFALEA’s activities this past year. This was fol-lowed by the presentation of the three scholar-ship awards given out this year to three deserv-ing recipients. Special guest Joey Manahan, amember of the City & County of Honolulu CityCouncil, also presented the organization withthe FALEA “20-Year Commemoration.” TheFALEA Games led by Angie Armas & LeiJaramilla was hilarious, and definitely added tothe festivities of the evening. The grand finalewas “Santa Claus is Coming to Town,” to thedelight of the children who received gifts from“Santa” Ferdi Guinto. Throughout the evening,door prizes were given out in-between the reg-ular dancing and line dancing. The GrandPrize, courtesy of the Board of Directors wasdrawn by VP/Pres-Elect Frank Cruzata as hegave his closing remarks to end another chap-ter in the history of FALEA, now in its 20th year.By the way, d’New Year is just around d’corner,or it’s already here by d’time you read this. TheYear of the Horse could mean success, speedysuccess, as the horse is a symbol of trans-portation or traveling… it can give people aride to their destination. HAPPY NEW YEARTO ALL!

The primary reasons for not attendingthe convention, in order of importance, were“Travel and hotel cost too high” followed up by“No time, too busy” and “Technical seminarsnot interesting”.

The suggested methods to increase partici-pation, in order of priority, were “Have majorityof conventions on Oahu”, followed up by a tiebetween “Reduce registration cost by select-ing lower cost venues” and “Reduce registra-tion cost by reinstating technical session regis-tration fee only”. There was also a substantialvote for “Change frequency of convention tobiannual basis”. Other common suggestedmethods to increase participation includescheduling the convention during summermonths and improving quality of the technical

sessions.The Board would like to thank those who par-

ticipated in the questionnaire and theConvention Committee will take these com-ments into consideration when planning futureconventions to better serve the needs of ourmembers.National Council of StructuralEngineer Association (NCSEA):

The NCSEA requested SEAOH to vote tosupport or not support NCSEA’s position state-ment for Continuing Professional Development.The SEAOH officers and directors voted to sup-port the NCSEA position statement forContinuing Professional Development of alllicensed structural engineers. A copy of theNCSEA position statement will be posted to theSEAOH website.

SEAOH YMG The SEAOH YMG (Younger Member Group)

held a dinner meeting on November 11th at theSSFM International office sponsored bySEAOH. Bennett Fung from SSFM Internationalgave an inspirational and dynamic presenta-tion on “How to Take Over the World”. He pro-vided tips for the group of young engineers toadvance their careers and constantly improvethemselves. In addition to the presentation,this year’s meetings, community serviceevents, and other activities were reviewed. Atentative schedule of events for next year wasplanned and a new chairperson was selected.Starting January 31, 2014, James Aoki will bethe new chairperson of the SEAOHYMG.Legislative Committee:

committee are continuing their work on gettinga bill to provide funding for the State BuildingCode Committee and to increase the numberof members from 9 to 14. Gary is also workingwith the State Building Code Committee on theamendments to the 2012 IBC code.

We plan to commemorate our 50 years ofservice throughout 2014 by recognizing ourpast presidents and celebrating our memberfirm’s contributions to Hawaii and ACECH atour monthly membership meetings,Engineering Excellence Awards banquet onJanuary 19th at the Koolau Ballrooms, annualmeeting on April 10th at the Honolulu CountryClub, and at the ACEC National FallConference which will be held at HiltonWaikoloa from October 22nd to 25th.

Companies (ACEC) will be awarding up to 6national scholarships for 2014. Applicationsaccepted from students who are entering theirjunior, senior, fifth, or master’s degree year (inthe Fall of 2014). Applicants must be a U.S. cit-izen pursuing a Bachelor’s or Master’s degreein engineering or in an accredited land-survey-ing program. ACEC Hawaii (ACECH) will benominating two (2) candidates for the GeneralScholarships and one (1) candidate for theSpecialty Scholarship. Although these arenational scholarships, historically there havebeen few applicants nationwide, so the proba-bility of being selected is reasonably good.
