February 2020 The National Chevy AssociationTM 1
Hi from Nat’l. Chevy, We’re keeping busy around here. It looks like it’s time to start getting cars done for summer shows and cruises. Today in Minnesota it almost feels like summer as our temps are in the 30’s and it is raining. It looks like we have about a week of this weather but we could use some sun. Hopefully it will melt some of the lots of snow we’ve gotten. I’m going to try something new to get some of you to send us some pictures of and information
about what you’ve done, like the great cover car this month has. We need pictures of your car(s) or pictures you’ve taken at car shows you’ve attended. There will be some cash or a free T-shirt. I haven’t figured it all out yet, but there will be more information next month, so start thinking about it now. Hopefully you’ll participate. Be sure to check out the specials this month and save some $$. Everyone likes to do that! ‘Til next time....

1950 SPECIAL CHEVROLET DATA
DID YOU KNOW? ... The wheelbase of the 1949
Chev was shortened 1” to 115” but looked longer than previous models.
In 1949 Chevrolet had 2 Station Wagons - a conventional wooden bodied model and an all-steel version which looked almost identical from a short distance away.
1950 brought a real winner - Powerglide - the first automatic transmission to appear in the low price field.
In 1950 the car length was increased to 197.5” but the wheelbase remained 115”.

Cover Car _________________________My first connection to my 1953 Chevy was in 1971, when I came to Menomonie, Wisconsin to attend college. I found a part-time job in the service department of the local Chevrolet dealer. One of our customers, Hattie, had bought her new ‘53 Chevy 210 when she retired (in 1953) and every winter thereafter she had it stored in the dealership’s basement, which held about twenty cars. For several years I was the one who prepared it for storage in the fall and made it ready for driving again in the spring. I had taken a keen interest in this car since it was nearly identical to the first car I owned at age 17. I had gotten to know Hattie pretty well, and at one point, mentioned my interest in buying her car should she ever decide to sell it. In the summer of 1978, I received a call from her asking if I was still interested. She was 93 and had decided she shouldn’t drive anymore.
Forty-one years later, I’ve cared for this car in a way that would have pleased Hattie. It’s always had a roof over it and never driven in the winter. With the help of NCA, I’ve kept it going mechanically and added some accessories along the way. The only options that came with the car were a powerglide, power steering (thankfully), and a spotlight. I’ve put about 15,000 miles on it; it now has 63,000 miles. The power train is all original. It has a couple small oil leaks from the engine and transmission, but it still runs great. The car is sound and totally rust free.
It’s a joy to drive, listening to a 50s rock and roll tape and being immediately transported from age 74 to age 17 again.
P.S. I have a wonderful grandson (age 4) who has his eye on it.
Dave BergstrandMenomonie, Wisconsin

1952 SPECIAL CHEVROLET DATA
DID YOU KNOW? ... 1951 brought few changes to
Chevrolet - it grew again to 197.8” but the wheelbase remained 115”.
Bendix brakes replaced Huck brakes and after an absence of 1 year Carter Carbs were used along with Stromberg and Rochester’s.
1952 changes were primarily the new but similar horizontal grill with five perssed “teeth” in the central bar.
Adding to the cosmetic ap-peal of the new grill this year’s Chevrolet had the largest selection of body colors and
two-tone combinations ever in a low price line of car with a choice of 129 colors and
two-tone exterior and interior variations.
