Türkiye'nin en büyük tıp öğrenci topluluğu olan TurkMSIC (Turkish Medical Students' International Committee – Türk Tıp Öğrencileri Uluslararası Komitesi) ülkemizdeki tıp öğrencileri arasında oluşturulmuş ve onları bir araya getiren bağımsız, siyasi olmayan, kar amacı gütmeyen en köklü kuruluştur.

TurkMSIC, 1952 yılında kurulmuş olup ülke çapında 37 tıp fakültesinde organizasyonel şemasını tamamlayan üye öğrenci toplulukları aracılığıyla Türkiye’deki 30.000’den fazla tıp öğrencisini temsil etmekle birlikte, uluslararası platformda ise kurulduğu yıldan bu yana ülkemiz tıp öğrencilerinin sesi olmayı sürdürmektedir. 1952 yılından beri üyesi olduğu IFMSA (International Federation of Medical Students’ Associations- Uluslararası Tıp Öğrencileri Birlikleri Federasyonu) ile olan yakın ilişkileri sayesinde Birleşmiş Milletler (UN) ve Dünya Sağlık Örgütü (WHO) tarafından resmi olarak tanınan Türkiye'deki ilk ve tek tıp öğrencileri forumudur.

___________________________________ TurkMSIC is the largest and the oldest

organization of the Turkish medical students in Turkey which works without any political, religious, social, racial, national, sexual or any other discrimination.

TurkMSIC was founded in 1952 and since then

it has been keeping to be the voice of the Turkish medical students on the international platform. Today it is representing more than 30.000 medical students throughout the country via the local committees which have fulfilled their organizational schemas. TurkMSIC is the first and only medical students’ association in Turkey recognized by the United Nations (UN) and the World Health Organization (WHO) by the agency of the IFMSA (International Federation of Medical Students’ Associations).

TurkMSIC SCOPE takımının ortak çalışması-nın eseri olarak ortaya çıkmış Turkuvaz’ın ilk sayısı huzurlarınızda.

Dergi fikri ilk olarak 59. Ekim Genel

Kurulu’nda, Kayseri’de editörlerimizden Gurur Garip tarafından ortaya atıldı. SCOPE ayrılmış oturumunda sunulan fikir daha sonra bir KÇG çalışması ile detaylandırıldı ve geliştirildi. Tüm SCOPEcilerin beğenip desteklediği bir fikir olarak Turkuvaz çok kısa zamanda hızla ilerleyen bir projeye dönüşüverdi.

Turkuvaz birçok şeyi değiştirecek. Giden

öğrenciler değişim tecrübesini ilk elden yazılmış bir yazıdan okuma fırsatı bulacaklar, gelen öğren-ciler Türkiye’ye gelmeden evvel okuyacakları yazılar sayesinde onları bekleyen değişimi hayal edebilecekler, TurkMSIC SCOPE’nin tanınırlığı artacak ve belki de en önemlisi Turkuvaz her yıl yüzlerce öğrenci değişimi yapan TurkMSIC SCOPE’nin hafızası olma özelliğini taşıyacak. Unutmayın, yazı kalır.

The first issue of the Turquoise magazine emerged as a collaborated work of TurkMSIC SCOPE team. The idea of publishing a magazine was first in-troduced by one of our editors, Gurur Garip, in 59. TurkMSIC General Assembly October, in Kayseri. It was discussed and detailed in a SWG after its presentation in the SCOPE session. As an idea liked and supported by all SCOPEans, Turquoise trans-formed into a rapidly improving project in very short time.

Turquoise will change many things. Outgoing

students will have the opportunity to read an arti-cle written in the first-hand experience, incoming students will be able to imagine the exchange wait-ing for them through the articles they read before-hand, the visibility of TurkMSIC SCOPE will be in-creased and the most importantly Turquoise will be the memory of TurkMSIC SCOPE that exchange the hundreds of students each year. Don’t forget, the inscription remains. Turquoise is the result of TurkMSIC SCOPEans’ nine-month intensive work. As the editors, we are proud and happy to share this result with you.

TurkMSIC which is formed by the volunteers and combining them with its comprehensive vision is the oldest and the largest non-profit, non-political medical students’ organization in Turkey.

To identify the problems of youth and to base the youth policies on those identifications are lying within non-governmental organizations’(NGO) responsibilities. Through the mentality of assuming an united society as symbol of modernity and with the trend projects to strengthen the society by NGOs, our organization has become more and more valuable today. TurkMSIC brings up its difference on behalf of the youth sc. the healthy people of the future right here.

Therefore, TurkMSIC which brings the medical

students together, sometimes elevates us with the power of our unity and becomes a roof to us has a different value. “Every precious thing is not able to measure, every measurable thing might not be precious.” TurkMSIC which became the combination of rising values of civil society for Turkish medical students is itself in the category of “unmeasurables” through its potential.

TurkMSIC aims to improve the intellectual skills

of tomorrow’s doctors by bringing them out. TurkMSIC’s philosophy is to create common positive values by common mind, to convert the common mind into action by completing it with tolerance and to be transparent at the same time. It allows the medical students to express their creativity. They gain the experience to execute a planned organization through improving their skills with the help of being in an intersection point of the civil society and the student community and they are inspired by an environement in which their projects are directed in national and international scales through the official contacts with the leader organizations such as WHO, UNESCO, UNICEF and UNFPA.

Turquoise is the first concrete output on behalf of

SCOPE’s change and devalopment which has a special meaning for me as it was the first sub-committee I met in TurkMSIC. I would like to thank all volunteers who expended their efforts in the process of publishing this magazine and hope you, TurkMSIC followers will enjoy while reading it.

In the national and international integration

process of the medical students, I wish for us being able to walk together on the way that TurkMSIC showed to us with change and progress.

Türkiye'nin en büyük tıp öğrenci topluluğu olan TurkMSIC ülkemizdeki gönüllü tıp öğrencileri arasında oluşturulmuş ve onları geniş kapsamlı bir vizyon ile bir araya getiren bağımsız, siyasi olmayan, kar amacı gütmeyen tıp öğrenci organizasyonları arasında en köklü kuruluştur. Gençlik sorunlarının tespit edilmesi ve gençlik politikalarının bu tespitler üzerine oturtulması bu alanda çalışan sivil toplum kuruluşlarına düşmektedir. Bugün çağdaş toplum,birlik olan toplumdur anlayışıyla dünyada sivil toplum kuruluşları tarafından, toplumsal kesimleri güçlendirmeyi öngören akım dahilinde; 59 yıl önce kurulan birliğimizin değeri daha da anlaşılmaktadır. İç dünyalarına akıl terleriyle yolculuk yapanların birliği olan TurkMSIC, tıbbiyeliler nezdinde gençlik ve dolayısıyla geleceğin sağlıklı toplumu adına farkını işte tam bu noktada ortaya koymaktadır. Before going to the city of Sibiu, Romania with IF-MSA exchange programme, the only thing I know about Romania was that once upon a time it has been within the borders of the Ottoman Empire. I searched on the internet to get more information about Roma-nia and its cities. My first choice of city has been Si-biu after I saw it on the internet as the European capital of culture 2007. What I had heard about Ro-mania wasn’t so bright, but to stop worrying and wait until seeing there with my own eyes in July were the most reasonable things I could do. To get passport was quite simple. I worked out the visa transactions together with Tiber, who was a friend of mine going to Romania also. I took my first step into Romanian by talking to the Romanian officers in the consulate. (“buna” , “la revedere” : “hello” , “see you”). Because my LEO explained to me what should I do item by item with an e-mail, I didn’t have much problem in the preparation stage.

At last I’ve been through all the procedures and

next thing to do was getting my luggage and boarding the plane. After a journey of about an hour me and my fellow traveller, Tiber arrived at Romania. Be-cause we were going to the different cities, Tiber to Iasi and me to Sibiu, I said goodbye to him in the air-port.

Turkmsic değişim sınavı ile Romanya’nın Sibiu şehrine gitmeden önce Romanya hakkında bildiğim tek şey bir zamanlar Osmanlı İmparatorluğu sınırları içinde yer almış olmasıydı. Romanya ve şehirleri hakkında daha fazla bilgi edinebilmek için ise internette küçük bir

araştırma yaptım. 2007’de Avrupa Kültür Başkenti olduğunu öğrendiğim Sibiu’yu gitmek istediğim şehirler sıralamasında en başa yazdım. Romanya hakkında çevremden duyduklarım pek de parlak değildi. Endişelenmeyi bırakıp, temmuza kadar beklemek ve orayı kendi gözlerimle görmekse en mantıklısıydı. Pasaport almak oldukça kolay oldu. Vize işlemlerini de benim gibi Romanya’ya gidecek olan Tiber’le hallettik, Romenceye ilk adımı konsoloslukta çalışan Romen memurlarla konuşarak attım. (“buna” , “la revedere” : “merhaba” , “görüşürüz”) Tüm bu hazırlık aşamasında Leo’muz neler yapmamız gerektiğini madde madde açıklayarak bizlere mail attığı için ben pek sıkıntı yaşamadım.

En sonunda tüm prosedürler hallolmuş sıra bavulları yüklenip Romanya uçağına binmeye gelmişti. Yaklaşık bir saat süren bir yolculuktan sonra yol arkadaşım Tiber’le Romanya’ya vardık. Gideceğimiz şehirler farklı olduğundan ben Sibiu’ya, Tiber Yaş’a gitmek üzere havaalanında ayrıldık.

Bilmediğim bir ülkede tek başıma seyahat edecek olmanın verdiği heyecanla elimde Contact Person‘ın verdiği yol tarifiyle otogar, otobüs, metro derken 5-6 saat sonra Sibiu’ya vardım. Sadece bu yolculuk bile beni çok etkiledi ve Romanya hakkında internette bulamayacağım birçok şeyi öğrenmeme sebep oldu. Romanya sosyalist rejimin etkisinden hala kurtulamamış, bununla birlikte insanları çok yardımsever ve cana yakındı. Otogarda beni karşılayan contact person’ım Alina arabasıyla beni bir ay boyunca orada kalacağım çok şirin bir öğrenci yurduna getirdi. Oda arkadaşlarım Danimarka’dan gelen Sarah ve Kenda’yla tanıştım. Bambaşka bir milliyetten bambaşka insanlarla hem de Romanya’da yaşayacak olmanın heyecanı tüm yorgunluğumu unutturdu. İlerleyen günlerde İspanyadan gelen arkadaşlar Lucia ve Sergio ile 5 kişilik süper kadromuz tamamlandı :) Birbirimize çok çabuk alışıp bu kısa sürede beklenmeyecek şekilde çok çabuk kaynaştık.

Stajımı genel cerrahide yaptım. Saat 08:30’da doktorlar ve asistanlarla sabah toplantısı yapılıyor, ameliyat edilecek hastalara uygulanacak prosedür tartışılıyordu. Ardından vizite çıkılıyor, ameliyat olanlar kontrol ediliyor ve küçük bir moladan sonra yeni ameliyatlar başlıyordu. Biz de ameliyatları seyretme imkanı buluyorduk. Başta bizle ilgilenen Prof. Dr. Kiss ve tüm ameliyathane ekibi bize karşı çok iyi niyetli ve yardımseverdi. Romenler doktor olup ameliyat yapsalar da yine rahat ve şakacı insanlardı. Bayan cerrah sayısı ise oldukça fazlaydı. Kadın erkek eşitliği Romanya’da her koşulda sağlanıyordu. Her yeni gün, yeni bir şey öğrenmek için harika ve kaçırılmaması gereken bir fırsattı.

I arrived to Sibiu after 5-6 hours of a journey get-

ting through buses, bus stations and subway with the excitement of travelling alone in a country which I don’t know and with the help of the description of the way to Sibiu sent to me by my contact person before-hand. Even this journey has just impressed me a lot and caused me to learn many things about Romania which I will not find on the Internet. Influence of the socialist regime in Romania was still existing. Never-theless the people were very helpful and friendly. My contact person, Alina, who met me in the central bus station brought me with her car to a very cute dormi-tory where I was going to stay for a month. I met my roommates, Sarah and Kenda from Denmark. The excitement of being to live with different people from a completely different country, besides in Romania, made me forget all my tiredness. Our super team of 5 people had been completed with the joining of Lucia and Sergio from Spain. We got socialized and used to each other very quickly.

I did my clerkship in the general surgery depart-

ment. At 08:30 in the morning doctors and assistants were assembling and the surgical procedures to be performed for the patients were being discussed. Then we were going for a ward round to visit the op-erated patients and after a short break new opera-tions were getting started, so we were finding the op-portunity to watch the operations. Particularly our tutor Prof. Kiss and also the entire operating room team were very gracious and helpful to us. Romani-ans were relaxed and playful people even if they were surgeons. The number of female surgeons was quite high also. Gender equality was being provided in all circumstances in Romania, so each new day was a great opportunity to learn something new which you shouldn’t miss.

We were going to explore the city we live, Sibiu, in

our remaining time from the hospital work. Sibiu was the former capital of Transylvania region, therefore it was home to many magnificent cathedrals, churches, buildings and lovely stone houses. The protection of the city’s original form which had been built in ba-roque style between 15th and 19th centuries was mak-ing me feel like travelled in time back into the middle ages. When we went to that restaurant serving the typical Romanian dishes, a little surprise was waiting for me there: Ciorba and sarmale, in other words çorba* and sarma**.

Hastaneden arda kalan zamanda ise yaşadığımız şehri yani Sibiu’yu keşfe çıkıyorduk. Sibiu Transilvanya bölgesinin eski başkenti olduğundan görkemli katedrallere, kiliselere, binalara çok şirin taş evlere ev sahipliği yapıyordu. 15 ile 19. yy ‘dan kalma barok tazında yapılandırılmış tüm şehrin orijinal şeklinde korunması ve yerli yerinde durması kendimi sanki Ortaçağ’a ışınlanmış gibi hissetmeme neden oluyordu. Tipik Romen yemeklerinin yapıldığı restauranta gittiğimizdeyse küçük bir sürpriz beni bekliyordu; çiorba ve sarmale yani çorba ve sarma.

Osmanlı’nın kültürel etkisi Romanya’da hala devam ediyor, bir çok Türkçe kelime günlük Romen dilinde hala kullanılıyordu. Acil bir işiniz mi var burada? Haydeee haydeee demeniz yeterli Türkçedekiyle aynı manada. Bunlardan ötürü Romanya’da hiç yabancılık çekmedim diyebilirim. Sırf kaldığımız şehirle de sınırlı kalmadık tüm değişim öğrencileri Brasov’da buluştuk hem gezdik hem yeni arkadaşlıklar edindik hem de Sibiu grubu olarak arkadaşlığımızı daha da pekiştirdik. Staj zamanının sonları geldiğinde Lucia ile kardeş kadar yakındık. Bir ayı doldurup da dönüş vakti geldiğinde dünyanın çeşitli ülkelerinden harika arkadaşlıklar kurmuş, bir ay Romanya’da genel cerrahi stajı yapmış, yeni bir ülkeyi keşfetmiş ve hayat tecrübeme yepyeni ve her anlamda dolu dolu bir sayfa eklemiştim.

İspanyol arkadaşım Lucia ile ise arkadaşlığımız hiç kopmadı, yazın sonunda buraya geldi, birlikte İstanbul turu yaptık, o da benden Ispanya’ya gelmem için söz aldı. Umarım bir gün tekrar buluşabiliriz. Herkese bu değişim programını kesinlikle öneririm.

The Cultural impact of the Ottoman Empire still con-tinues in Romania, a lot of Turkish words are still in use in daily Romanian language today. Do you have an emergent condition? All you need to do is shout-ing: Haydeee haydee*** same as in Turkish. Because of these I can say that I did not feel myself as a for-eigner in Romania. We didn’t stint ourselves just to the city we stay. We met the other exchange students in Brasov. We walked around, had new friends and strengthened our friendship even more. As the in-ternship was coming to an end me and Lucia were as close as two sisters to each other. When a month went by and the leaving time came by, I had made great friends, completed the general surgery intern-ship in Romania for a month, discovered a new coun-try and added a new and full up page to my life ex-periences in every sense.

Our friendship with my Spanish friend Lucia didn’t

have a break till now, she came to Istanbul at the end of the summer, we made a tour of Istanbul together and she got a promise out of me to come to Spain. I hope we can meet one day again. Definitely I recom-mend this exchange program to all medical students.

I am very happy to write this article about my exchange program and I hope it will help other stu-dents to spend a good time in Turkey.

I am a medical student in Egypt and my story

started when I first heard about the medical students’ exchange program with SCOPE. I thought it would be very interesting to exchange experience and get in contact with other students from different countries and cultures. I decided to take this chance and have my first travel abroad. This program was to bring me many exciting memories and a marvelous holiday.

I was very lucky since the minute I reached the

airport in Istanbul. A man who couldn’t speak Eng-lish insisted to help me find my CP (Contact Person), and waited with me nearly two hours, after he was sure I was safe and found Yunus Emre we said bye to each other. And I could assure you I had absolutely no problem getting in touch with my two CPs; Erkan and Yunus Emre who were very cooperative. First we met on the Facebook group and they gave their phone numbers so I could easily reach them on my way to Kayseri.

Kayseri is the city I spend most of my time and

I had my exchange! The hospital had very good op-portunities, especially in the “Genetics Department”. Doctors helped us to do the lab investigation and ob-serving clinical cases was amazing. We had the chance to explore other departments too; I also at-tended an operation once! I could say the program was very helpful to me, I learned a lot about DNA, RNA and their extraction. I strongly recommend you all to get to work in a field you feel interested in. Our doctors were very nice and helped us during the whole time. We enjoyed spending time together, so we did see each other after work time, we even went to a circus together! Also, because it was Ramadan one of the doctors cooked a special dish for us which was very delicious.

Değişim programım ile ilgili bu yazıyı yazdığım için çok mutluyum ve umarım ki bu yazı diğer öğrencilerin de Türkiye’de güzel vakit geçirmeleri için onlara yardımcı olur. Eğitim hayatına Mısır’da devam eden bir tıp öğren-cisiyim. Hikayem tıp

öğrencilerinin SCOPE ile olan değişim programlarını duyduğumda başladı. Değişim tecrübesinin ve farklı ülkelerden farklı kültürlerdeki öğrenciler ile temas kurmanın ilginç olabileceğini düşündüm. Bu fırsatı değerlendirmeye karar verdim ve ilk yurtdışı seya-hatimi gerçekleştirdim. Bana heyecan verici anılar sunan bu program benim için muhteşem bir tatil oldu.

İstanbul’a ulaştığım dakikadan itibaren çok

şanslıydım. İngilizce konuşamayan bir adam CP’ye ulaşmam için ısrarla yardım etti ve benimle, CP’im olan Yunus Emre ile buluşuncaya kadar yaklaşık 2 saat bekledi. Yardımsever CP‘lerim Erkan ve Yunus Emre ile iletişimimde hiçbir problem yaşamadım. Önce Facebook aracılığı ile görüştük sonra bana tele-fon numaralarını verdiler böylelikle onlara Kayseri yolculuğumda kolaylıkla ulaşabildim.

Kayseri, değişim programımı gerçekleştirdiğim

ve zamanımın büyük kısmını geçirdiğim şehirdi. Has-tane özellikle genetik anabilim dalı olmak üzere çok iyi imkanlara sahipti. Doktorlar labovatuarlarda gözlem yapmamıza yardımcı oluyorlardı, klinik vakaları incelemek şaşırtıcıydı. Diğer bölümleri de keşfetme şansı bulduk: hatta bir keresinde op-erasyona bile katıldım! Program bana çok yararlı oldu diyebilirm. DNA, RNA ve onların izolasyonu hakkında çok şey öğrendim. Herkese ilgilendikleri alanlarda tercih yapmasını öneririm. Doktorlarımız çok iyilerdi ve her zaman bize yardımcı oluyorlardı . Onlarla vakit geçirmekten zevk alıyorduk bu yüzden mesai saatlerinden sonra da görüşüyorduk, beraber

Biz Antalya Olimpos’a; Kapadokya’ya; Asya ve Avrupa yakalarıyla İstanbul’a; muhteşem şelaleleri ve Erciyes Dağı ile birlikte çok güzel bir kent olan Kayseri’ye gittik. Beyti ,iskender ,kebab ve pide gibi geleneksel yemek-lerden tattık, baharatlı yemeklerden kaçındık ama Türkler baharatları kullanmayı çok seviyor gözüküyor. Ayrıca özellikle de geleneksel bir yemek sipariş vermişseniz genellikle yoğurt ile servis edili-yor.

Karşılaştığım tek problem, hostelimle hastane

arasında ulaşımdı. Hostelim şehre biraz uzakta kalıy-ordu ve otobüse binmem gerkiyordu. Önceleri Türkçe konuşamadığım için zorlandım, fakat harika CP’im sayesinde hemen halloldu ve yoğun programıma geri dönebildim! Umarım size Türkiye’de değişimin nasıl olduğuna dair ufak da olsa biraz bilgi verebilmişim-dir. Fakat unutmamak gerekir ki Türkiye geniş bir coğrafyaya sahip, gezmek istenilen şehirler birbirler-ine çok uzak olabilir bu yüzden zamanında göz önünde bulundurarak plan hazırlamak gerekir. Bir de Türk insanın yardımsever güler yüzlü oluşu beni şaşırttı. Onlarla biraz zaman geçirin, çok ilginç olduk-larını göreceksinİz. Türkiye’ye bir gün yine gelmek isterim. Oradaki otuz günüm benim için cennet gibi-ydi! Herkese çok teşekkürler.

I spent my happy days with my fun group of

friends: Paula, Evit, Lara and Khaled. We went to Antalya, Olympos; Cappadocia, Istanbul-both the Asian and the European sides- and Kayseri which is a very beautiful city with lots of waterfalls and the mountain Erciyes. As for the cuisine, we tried some traditional food like Beyti, Iskender, Kebab and Pide, and beware the spicy dishes, as Turkish people seem to use spices a lot; also yogurt is served quite often, especially when you order a traditional food.

The only problem I personally faced during my

stay was the transportation from my hostel. It was a bit outside the city and I had to take a bus to get to the city center, so it was hard in the beginning since I didn’t speak Turkish, but thanks to my great CPs this problem was solved quickly, and I was back on my busy schedule!

I hope I gave a tiny peak into what exchange in

Turkey is. Just don’t forget that it is a wide country and you have to plan your trips in advance to make the best use of your time, since the cities you want to visit might be very far away from each other. Besides that it was amazing for me, Turkish people are very nice, helpful and always smiling. Spend some time with them; you’ll see they are very interesting. I hope to come to Turkey again one day; these were thirty days in heaven for me! Thank you all.

Hi, I’m Bengisu and I’m a second year medical

student. When I first learned about the exchange pro-gram TurkMSIC was offering, I thought I should defi-nitely try it, because it was a great chance to get to know a different culture and have an internship in hospital, which would make me feel closer to the field I was to work in, medicine.

Yes, but why Mexico? Despite my mother’s dis-

approval, Mexico was always a country to draw me and my father. Very much like Turkey it is a cross point for many different cultures and has an amazing nature. Plus, my mum’s prejudice was only because of the movies we used to watch and the distance be-tween two countries.

Arrival to Culiacan and first impres-

sions: After a long and exhausting journey I arrived in

Culiacan. Before I landed I saw it was raining and felt happy because in Turkey when it rains the weather cools down, but unfortunately I was wrong this time, the rain in Culiacan makes it much harder to stand the heat. Culiacan is the capital of State Sinaloa and is famous for its tomato cultivation. It is only one hour away from the Pacific Ocean shore.

In Culiacan, I stayed with a family with two

children. The older sister was a medical student like me, and during my stay in their home they did every-thing possible to make me feel comfortable. They gave me a private room, cooked me traditional Mexi-can dishes everyday and drove me to the hospital every morning. I don’t remember to have met more hospitable and nice people before.

In this small city everyone lives in separate

houses and every family has at least two cars. Be-cause of the weather conditions people are used to drive even to the closest destinations. “Oxxo” is a very common place to find in there. It is a small market where you can find everything from medication to detergent. So if you find an oxxo on your way, it means you have found a life-saver. Also Mexicans are very nice, cheerful, funny people who make jokes all the time. They have made Fridays nights their official party time. Loud music, few chairs, friends and booze are enough to turn their night into a fantastic one.

Ben Bengisu Keskin ve Ege Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi'nde ikinci sınıf öğrencisiyim. TurkMSIC tanıtımında değişim programlarını duyduğumda çok hoşuma gitti ve staj değişiminde şansımı kesinlikle

denemeliyim diye düşündüm. Böylece hem hastanede staj yaparak tıp bilimine kendimi daha yakın hissedebilecek hem de başka bir kültürü yakından tanıyabilecektim.

Peki, neden Meksika? Annemin bütün itirazlarına rağmen Meksika babamla beni en çok çeken ülke olmuştu çünkü Meksika da tıpkı Türkiye gibi birçok eski medeniyetlerinin buluştuğu bir yer ve birçok doğa harikasına ev sahipliği yapıyor. Annemin itirazlarının nedeniyse Amerikan filmlerinden dolayı oluşan önyargılar ve tabii ki Meksika ile Türkiye arasındaki mesafenin fazla olması.

Culiacán’a varış ve ilk izlenim:

Uzun ve zahmetli bir yolculuktan sonra Culiacán'a vardığımda beni yağışlı bir hava karşıladı. Uçaktan yağışı gördüğümde hava serin olacağı için sevinmiş-tim; çünkü Türkiye'de yağmur bizi serinletir ancak Culiacán'da yağmur havayı daha da bunaltıcı yapıyor. Culiacán, Sinaloa eyaletinin başkenti ve dünyada do-mates yetiştirmesiyle ünlü. Büyük Okyanus kıyısında ve sahile sadece bir saat uzaklıkta.

Culiacán'da iki çocuklu bir ailenin yanında kaldım. Evin büyük kızı benim yaşımda bir tıp öğrencisiydi. Bir ay boyunca beni rahat ettirmek için ellerinden geleni yaptılar. Bana özel oda verdiler, her gün Mek-sika'ya özgü yemekler yaptılar, beni her sabah has-taneye bıraktılar. Hayatım boyunca bu kadar misafir-perver ve sıcak insanlar görmedim.

Bu küçük şehirde herkes müstakil evlerde yaşıyor ve her evde en az iki araba var. Hava koşullarından dolayı en yakın mesafeye bile arabayla gidiyorlar. Her köşe başında “oxxo” var. Oxxo bir çeşit küçük market ancak içinde her şeyi bulmak mümkün. Kahveden tutun ilaca ya da deterjana kadar... Eğer bir oxxo ile karşılaşırsanız hayatınız kurtulmuş demektir. Meksikalılar çok eğlenceli insanlar, her cumayı parti akşamı ilan etmişler ve sürekli ev partileri düzenliyorlar. Son ses müzik, birkaç sandalye ve içki stoku onların akşamlarını renklendirmek için yeterli. Ayrıca çok da neşeliler, sürekli gülüyor ve şaka yapıyorlar.

Hastanede hayat:

Preklinik öğrenci olduğumdan hiçbir klinik deneyimim olmadan gitmiştim. Stajım jinekoloji bölümündeydi ve başlamadan bazı çekincelerim vardı; çünkü hem İspanyolca bilmiyordum hem de henüz jinekolojiyle ilgili hiçbir bilgim yoktu. Beni ilk gün bir doktora emanet ettiler ve böylece staja başladım. Daha önce hiçbir deneyimi olmayan küçük ben, ilk doğumu izlerken karnımda sancılar hissetmeye başladım. Doktorum bana şimdilik izle bir dahakine sen yaparsın dediğinde ise kendimi yerde buldum. İlk günkü bayılmamdan sonra kendi kendime eğer tıp okuyorsan bunlara şimdi alışman gerekiyor dedim ve ertesi gün benim için yeni bir gündü. Bir ay içerisinde sayısını hatırlayamayacağım kadar sezaryene, bir laparoskopiye girdim. İki doğum yaptırdım ve birçok şey öğrendim. Doktorlarım bana karşı çok sabırlı davrandılar ve her şeyi en başından anlattılar. Tıbbi şeylerin yanı sıra bana hastalarla nasıl iletişim kuracağımı da öğrettiler. Ayın sonlarına doğru artık hastalarla iletişim kurabiliyordum, İspanyolca tabii ki.

Life in the Hospital: As I just had finished first grade I had no ex-

perience in any clinical department. My internship was in the Gynecology & Obstetrics departments, so I had serious concerns. I didn’t know any Spanish and had no experience in this field. On my first day, I met my attending doctor and I watched my first operation which was him delivering a birth. When he said I was allowed only to watch this first time, I felt the butter-flies in my belly. But when I heard I was to deliver the baby on the second birth case I opened my eyes on the floor. After my blackout in the operation room I reminded myself that I was studying medicine, and all this was part of my job, so I started my second day as a fresh and new person. In the time of my intern-ship I attended many Caesarean sections, one laparo-scopic surgery and I also delivered two babies! I learned many interesting things, from communicat-ing with patients in Spanish to many medical instruc-tions. My attending doctor was very patient and ex-plained every procedure to me, also gave me tips on how to get into contact with the patients and under-stand them.

When compared to our educational system in medical faculties, students study seven years of gen-eral medicine and take a test in order to become as-sistant doctors. The length of the program depends on the department and the specialty. Despite the enormous amount of work they have to do, doctors in Mexico are always smiling and happy of their lives. Plus, music was playing all the time in the delivery room!

Trips and social life: My Mexican sister prepared such a busy social

program for me that I had absolutely no time to get bored. Even though there wasn’t a lot to see in Culia-can as sightseeing, the people I met there were very nice. Besides the trips we made in the city, we drove to another city very close to the ocean, so I had my first experience in the ocean and it was something I wasn’t very used to. In order to be able to fight against and swim in between such waves you have to take a deep breath and dive two or three times into the water. Otherwise, you could turn upside down or suddenly find yourself naked! After five minutes in the water I felt so exhausted that I don’t remember how I got to the shore. My Mexican family also took me to another city where one of their relatives was having a birthday party, so for the first time in my life I found the chance to pick up my own tropical food.

Buradaki intörnler, asistan doktorlar ve uzmanlarla iletişim kurarak iki ülke arasındaki mesleksel farkları görme şansını elde ettim. Meksika’da da tıp eğitimi ve doktorluk çok zahmetli ve uzun bir yol. Orada öğrenciler yedi yıllık bir eğitimin ardından asistan doktor olma şansını elde

ediyorlar. Asistanlık ise bizim ülkemizdeki gibi sınavla ve uzmanlığına göre süresi değişiyor. Burada doktorlar da diğer Meksikalılar gibi çok neşeliler. Yapmak zorunda oldukları onca yorucu işe ve uykusuzluğa rağmen sürekli gülümsüyorlar ve birbirleriyle şakalaşıyorlar. Ayrıca doğumhaneden müzik sesi hiç eksik olmuyor.

Geziler ve sosyal hayat:

Meksikalı kız kardeşim benim için epey kalabalık bir sosyal program hazırlamıştı, dolayısıyla sıkılmak için hiç vaktim olmadı. Küçük bir şehir olan Culiacán'da görülecek pek bir şey olmasa da oradaki insanlarla paylaştığım her an çok güzeldi. Şehir içi gezilerin yanı sıra Culiacán yakınlarındaki okyanus kıyısı bir şehre gidip hafta sonunu orada geçirdik ve böylece okyanusta yüzmüş oldum. Okyanus benim deniz anlayışımdan epey farklı. Dalgalardan korun-mak için dakikada iki üç kere suya dalmanız gereki-yor. Aksini denerseniz tepetaklak ve çıplak bir şekilde kendinizi kıyıda buluyorsunuz. Beş dakikalık yüzme maceram sonrasında kendimi zar zor kıyıya atabildim. Meksikalı ailem beni küçük bir kasabaya bir akrabalarının doğum günü için götürdü ve birçok tropikal meyveyi orada dalından koparıp yeme şansı buldum.

Mexican cuisine: I didn’t feel much distant to the Mexican cui-

sine since it is similar to the Turkish one. In most of the restaurants you could find burrito and quesadilla which are very common dishes. I loved the food as long as it wasn’t too spicy, but luckily they bring the hot sauces separate from the food. I also ate a lot of tropical fruits which are very hard to find in Turkey or are not common at all, and I also loved eating co-conut while drinking the juice of it.

The only problem to me was that, they added

lemon and chili (pepper) to every single dish. Lemon was ok, but chili was not so much. I think they should seriously keep it away from fruits and des-serts!

Adios amigos: It was very hard for me to say bye to this

amazing small city and all the lovely people I met. It was a great experience and I learned a lot. Now, I can’t wait to host them!

Meksika mutfağı

Meksika yemekleri bize çok da yabancı değil. Neredeyse bütün yemek yerlerinde Burrito, Quesadilla tarzı Meksika yemekleri satılıyor. Acı olmadıkları sürece yemeklere bayıldım, neyse ki genellikle acı sosları yemeklerin yanında ayrı getiriyorlar. Türkiye'de çok yaygın olmayan birçok tropik meyveyi evinde yeme fırsatını buldum. Kabuğunun içinden hindistan cevizi yiyip yanında suyunu içmek çok keyifliymiş.

Tek sorun her şeye chili (biber) ve limon koyuyor olmaları. Tamam, limon konusunda hemfikirim, biber ise yemeklerin içinde gayet hoş olabilir ancak meyvelerden ve tatlılardan uzak olmalı bence!!!

Bu küçük şehre ve bu harika insanlara güle güle demek benim için çok zor oldu. Birçok güzel şey yaşadım ve birçok şey öğrendim. Şimdi ise ben onları evime bekliyorum.

Dr. Karahan was born in Adana on 14 July 1961. He completed his secondary education in Tarsus American High School in 1979. During his secondary education (1977-1978 academic year) he studied at the U.S. state of Ohio with AFS international ex-change scholarship for one year. He graduated from the Faculty of Medicine, Hacettepe in 1985. Dr. Karahan began his specialization at Marmara University Faculty of Medicine in 1988. He got his associate professorship in 1998 and professorship in 2004. Currently, he is a board member of Turkey Sports Injuries, Arthroscopy and Knee Surgery As-sociation (TUSYAD), Shoulder and Elbow Surgery Association (ODCD), The Education Council of Turk-ish Association of Orthopedics and Traumatology (TOTE). He is also working in the Health Boards of Volleyball Federation, Rowing Federation and Ka-rate Federation. Can you tell us your history of TurkMSIC? M.K: An older brother of ours graduated in 1982 was carrying on the presidency in Hacettepe. I have taken over from him. TurkMSIC was an organization which was interested basically in the exchange of students. I have started to work in TurkMSIC in 1982 and gradu-ated from Hacettepe in 1985. I was the President of TurkMSIC between 1983 and 1985, have been to the General Assemblies. TurkMSIC wasn’t a legally regis-tered organization in Turkey in those days. Turkish Medical Association gave us a room in their office in Ankara, we were using it, they took us under their wings. There were many doubts on the students after the 12 September 1980*, we were neither an association nor an organization legally. Everything was restricted, we were being chased, giving explanations for everything we do. Under those circumstances we managed to do the exchanges by using our individual relations only. The primary health care centers in Ankara were an important source for us, the people from the North-ern Europe Countries were preferring them very of-ten. As for the students from the Southern Europe, they were coming more to Istanbul. In our team in Ankara there was Önder (Ergönül) and Önder’s close friend Murat Rezaki, he has died in a traffic accident, was a psychiatrist. We worked day and night. Another one of the people we worked was Teoman Benli, a professor in orthopedics, we still see each other. We were organizing the examinations together and he became the examiner of the orthopedic community now.

Dr. Mustafa Karahan 14 Temmuz 1961 tarihinde Adana’da doğdu. Orta öğrenimini Tarsus Amerikan Lisesi’nde 1979 yılında tamamladı. Orta öğrenimi sırasında (1977-1978 öğretim yılında) AFS uluslararası değişim bursu ile 1 yıl

süre ile Amerika’nın Ohio eyaletinde eğitim gördü. 1979 yılında girdiği Hacettepe Tıp Fakültesi’nden 1985 yılında mezun oldu. 1988 yılında Marmara Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi’nde ihtisasa başladı, 1998 yılında Doçentliğini ve 2004 yılında Profesörlüğünü Marmara Üniversitesi'nde aldı. Halen Türkiye Spor Yaralanmaları, Artroskopi ve Diz Cerrahisi (TUSYAD), Omuz ve Dirsek Cerrahisi Derneği (ODCD), Türk Ortopedi ve Travmatoloji Derneği Eğitim Konseyi (TOTEK) yönetim kurulu üyeliğini yürüten Dr. Karahan Voleybol Federasyonu, Kürek Federasyonu, Karate Federasyonu Sağlık Kurullarında görev yapmaktadır. TurkMSIC geçmişinizden biraz bahsedebilir misiniz? M.K.: Hacettepe’de 82 mezunu bir ağabeyimiz başkanlığını yapıyordu TurkMSIC’in. Ben ondan devraldım. TurkMSIC kabaca öğrenci değişimi ile ilgilenen bir organizasyondu. 85 mezunuyum ben hacettepeden, 82 yılında çalışmaya başladım. 83-84, 84-85 yılları arasında TurkMSIC başkanlığı yaptım. GA’lere gittim. IFMSA’in Türkiye’de karşılığı yoktu o zamanlar. Türk Tabipler Birliği Ankara ofisi bize bir oda vermişti, orayı kullanıyorduk, kol kanat germişlerdi bize. 12 Eylül’den hemen sonra olduğu için öğrencilerin üzerinde şüphe çoktu, dernek değildik, organizasyon da değildik. Herşeyimiz kayıt altındaydı, takip ediliyorsun, hesap veriyorsun. Zor şartlardaydık ama bu değişim işini de bireysel ilişkileri kullanarak yapıyorduk. Ankara’daki sağlık ocakları çok önemli kaynaktı, kuzey ülkelerinden çok sık geliyorlardı, Kuzey Avrupa’dan. Güney Avrupa’dan da İstanbul’a geliyorlardı, Çemberlitaş’taki öğrenci yurdunu ayarlıyorduk. Ankara’da çalıştığımız arkadaşlar Önder (Ergönül) bir tanesi, diğeri Önder’in yakın arkadaşı Murat Rezaki idi, trafik kazasında vefat etti, psikiyatristti. Gece gündüz çalışıyorduk. Yine çalıştığımız insanlardan bir tanesi Teoman Benli, ortopedi profesörü, hala görüşürüz. Sınav yapıyorduk onunla, o da ortopedi camiasının sınavcısı oldu şu anda.

Sınava kaç kişi giriyordu o zamanlar? M.K.: 500-600 kişilik sınav yapıyorduk, 60 kişi falan yurtdışına gönderiyorduk. Sınavda soruları biz hazırlıyorduk, yatağımızın altında tutuyorduk kimse görmesin diye. Şu anda 2500’e yakın kişi sınava giriyor ve 300’e yakın kişi de değişime gidiyor. Soruları profesyonel partnerler ile hazırlıyoruz. M.K.: Biz hazırlıyoduk, biz hazırlıyoduk. Yani önceden gelmiş soruları düşünüyorum, ne kadar güvensiz bir durum. Ben AFS liyim. 1978 yılında Amerika’da 1 sene kaldım, onun için bu değişim işleri bizim ruhumuzda var. Bugün hala ortopedi camiasının önde gelen 1-2 uluslararası adamından bir tanesiyim, o yüzden bu işler insanın içinde olunca yapıyor . IFMSA ve TurkMSIC hakkındaki görüşleriniz nelerdir? Size neler kattıklarını düşünüyorsunuz? M.K:Birçok bireysel kazançlar sağladım. Çok güzel arkadaşlıklar edinildi, gelenlere güzel ortamlar sağladık, bizler gidip güzel ilişkiler kurduk. Önder (Ergönül) gibi bir dostumu o ortamda kazandım. Çok disiplinli çalıştık kesinlikle. Gelenleri evlerimizde ağırladık, özel programlar ayarladık. Mecburi hizmete gidenlerin yanına gönderdik, bunu pazarladık, tabi böyle bir program yarattık, dedik ki sizi mesela Trabzon’un köyüne gönderiyoruz. Tek tek arkadaşlarımızı aradık “senin yanına öğrenci gönderebilir miyiz?” diye. Ooo bayıldılar. 20-30 kişi... Yani kurumsallaşmış bir şey yoktu, bir bireysel ilişkiler düzeneği kurmuştuk.

How many people were taking the exam at that time? MK: 500-600 people were taking the exams, approxi-mately 60 people were being sent abroad. We were making the exam questions and keeping them under our bed. Now, 2500 people are taking the exam and about 300 people are having the chance to go for an exchange. The questions are prepared with professional partner corporations. M.K.: We were making the questions in those days. So I think of the questions have come in the past, no matter how insecure the situation was. I had AFS** exchange. I have stayed in USA for 1 year in 1978, so exchange is in my soul since then. Today, I am still one of the leading international people in the ortho-pedics, so if you have these things inside you, you are able to do it. What are your views on the IFMSA and TurkMSIC? What did they add to you? M.K: I had many individual avails, had very good friends. We provided good conditions for the incom-ing students, we went abroad also and have estab-lished good relations. I met a very good friend Önder (Ergönül) via TurkMSIC. We worked in discipline. Sometimes we had accommodated the incomings in our houses, arranged special programs for them. We sent them to the primary health care centers where our friends practicing their obligatory service*** and marketed it, so we have created such a program. For example, we said to the incoming students that we will send you to a village of Trabzon. We phoned our friends and asked if we could send students there. Our friends loved the idea and said yes. 20-30 peo-ple... So there was not an institutional organization, but we had set up a mechanism of individual relation-ships.

As you know, there are now 6 sub-committees in TurkMSIC: SCOPE, SCORE, SCOPH, SCOME, SCORA and SCORP. All has been working separately. So what do you think of the place of professional student exchange within IFMSA and TurkMSIC? What might an exchange add to a medical student? M.K: “Global citizenship” must be the main idea. So it’s not the same anymore. I have also sent all of my students abroad. In this regard there is nothing to discuss and TurkMSIC is the ideal organization for it. You're going abroad, together with the other out-goings from all over the world, in the same atmos-phere... just great... Sometimes I also see foreign stu-dents here, I love it. They're coming here, sharing the same air and the spirit with you. TurkMSIC is very important, but the institutionalization has to be pro-vided also. We couldn’t manage to do it in our period. Have you ever been to an IFMSA exchange? What have you experienced? M.K.: No, I have never been to an exchange of IF-MSA, but been to the General Assemblies, for exam-ple I went to Egypt where I rode a horse for the first time in my life. Then we have been to Sweden. With limited money... first I went to Thessaloniki and then from there to Sweden by train. But along the way I have stayed in the students who had come to Turkey before. I haven’t paid for the hotel. For example, in Nijmegen (Netherlands) 10 people welcomed me. I stayed there 36 hours awake, we drank, had fun and again they put me on the train. On the way back home I was out of money, when I came to the island of Korfo. I had only a 100 dollars banknote and some change. From there I will pass to Turkey finally. I was talking to a man and suddenly I realized that I lost my money. I was out of money, only I had an Inter-Rail ticket. Then I met a Portuguese boy, he shared his food with me, we slept in a park, although he couldn’t speak English and I couldn’t speak Portu-guese. What do you think about the academic quality of the exchanges? What can you suggest in terms of making the exchanges academically more useful for the medical students? M.K: It’s very difficult to increase the quality of the internships. This is an entertainment, a social pro-gram. It can’t be as giving grades to the students in their summer vacation. The first goal need to be gain-ing skills in social communication, then the science or the research should come. But the following condi-tion should be provided: the incoming students should have the chance to do the same job with the local students. So they won’t be hanging out in pubs there. They will work there just like any other local student.

Şu anda TurkMSIC’in altı tane alt komitesi var bildiğiniz üzere: SCOPE, SCORE, SCOPH, SCOME, SCORA, SCORP. Hepsi ayrı ayrı çalışmalar yapıyor. Peki sizce profesyonel öğrenci değişiminin IFMSA ve TurkMSIC içerisindeki yeri nedir? Bu değişimler tıp öğrencilerine neler katıyordur? M.K: Dünya vatandaşlığı esas. Yani artık eskisi gibi değil. Ben kendi öğrencilerimin hepsini de yurtdışına gönderdim. Bu konuda tartışılacak bir şey yok. TurkMSIC de bu iş için ideal. Gidiyorsun öğrencilerle bir arada, okulun içerisinde, aynı atmosferin içerisinde... Muhteşem... O yabancı çocukları görüyorum mesela bayılıyorum. Buraya geliyorlar, sizlerle aynı havayı, ruhu paylaşıyorlar. TurkMSIC çok önemli, tabi orada da kurumsallaşma önemli. Bizim dönemimizde kurumsallaşma yoktu. Siz hiç TurkMSIC ile öğrenci değişimine gittiniz mi? Neler yaşamıştınız? M.K.: Değişime hiç gitmedim. Ama GA’lere gittim, Mısır’a mesela, hayatımda ata ilk orada bindim. Sonra İsveç’e gittik. Para yok, pul yok. Önce Selanik’e gittim oradan İsveç’e kadar trenle. Ama yolda hep zamanında gelmiş olan öğrencilere uğradım. Hiç otel parası falan vermedim. Mesela Nijmegen’de (Hollanda) beni 10 kişi karşıladı. 36 saat kaldım orada, 36 saat uyanıktık, içtik, eğlendik, tekrar beni trene koydular. Yolda gelirken Korfo adasında param bitti. Bir 100 dolarım bir de bozukluklar vardı. Oradan Türkiye’ye geçeceğim artık. Orada konuşurken adamın biriyle bir baktım para yok. Para kalmadı. Bir interrail biletim var. Sonra Portekizli bir çocukla karşılaştım, o yemeğini falan paylaştı benimle, parkta yattık. Ne o İngilizce biliyor ne de ben Portekizce biliyorum. Değişimlerin akademik boyutu hakkında neler düşünüyorsunuz? Tıp öğrencilerine bu açıdan daha yararlı olabilmesi için neler yapılmasını önerirsiniz? M.K: Çok zor. Stajların kalitesinin yükselmesi çok zor. Bu bir eğlence. Sosyal bir program. Bir yaz tatilinde gidip de böyle not üzerinden vererek olmaz.

Approximately 300 students will go for ex-change this year. The internet is very impor-tant especially in terms of managing the process of exchange and in the preparation of the students’ documents. How were you mak-ing the communications in those days? M.K.: By mail…typewriters, until dawn... was taking a lot of time. I failed two internships: ENT and oph-thalmology, because of the nonattendance. Everyone has finished in August, I have finished in November. What are the contributions of TurkMSIC to your profession? MK: I do not have a contribution in terms of individ-ual relationships. Today I don’t know where those people work, I mean the people I know in those days. But I had chance to see the different point of views, views to Turkey from outside. These things are not valid for you today, but at that time Turkey was an isolated country. Thanks to this, the difference between me and the closest one to me became out and away. Currently in my age group I am the one with the highest number of the foreign relationships. So I gained a lot. But this is not true for you. You are growing international anyhow. Can you be informed about what TurkMSIC is doing today? M.K: No, I can not, but I'd love to. You should invite us more to meetings, etc. Some interested people will be found for sure. What do you think about the TurkMSIC SCOPE team’s magazine project? M.K.: Super, super. Finally, do you have something to add? MK: I wish you luck. It’s fun and very nice. Birinci amaç sosyal iletişim becerilerini kazandırmak, yani bu değişimi bu ağırlıkta yapmak; daha sonra araştırma mı dedin bilim mi dedin o kapsamda yapmak daha doğru. Ama şu şart: Oradaki öğrenci ne yapıyorsa buradan giden öğrenci de aynı işi yapacak. Yani gidip orada publarda dolaşmayacak. Oradaki öğrencinin işi neyse onu yapacak.

Bu sene 300’e yakın öğrenci değişime gidecek. Özellikle bu öğrencilerin belgelerinin hazırlanması ve değişim sürecinin yönetilmesi açısından internet çok önemli. O zamanlarda bu iletişim nasıl sağlanıyordu? M.K.: Posta,posta. Ohoo... Daktilo, sabahlara kadar... Çok zaman alıyordu. İki stajdan kaldım: KBB ve göz. O da devamsızlıktan. Herkes Ağustos’ta bitirdi, ben Kasım’da bitirdim.

TurkMSIC içerisinde görev almış olmanın mesleğinize ne gibi katkıları olmuştur? M.K: Yani bireysel ilişkiler açısından bugüne bir katkısı yok. O gün tanıdığım kişi bugün şurada diye bir katkısı yok. Ama oradaki bakış açılarını görüyorsun, Türkiye’ye bakış açılarını. Bunlar sizin için geçerli değil, o zamanlar Türkiye çok izole bir ülkeydi. Benim en yakınımla aramdaki fark fersah fersah oldu bu sayede. Şu an benim yaş grubumda en çok dış ilişki sahibi olan benim. Yani çok şey kazandırdı. Ama sizin için bu geçerli değil. Sizler zaten uluslararası yetişiyorsunuz. Bugün TurkMSIC’in neler yaptığından haberdar olabiliyor musunuz? M.K: Yok, olamıyorum, ama çok isterim. Yani bizleri daha çok davet etmelisiniz, böyle toplantı vs. Eskilerden meraklı olanlar da çıkacaktır. TurkMSIC SCOPE’nin bu dergi projesi hakkında neler düşünüyorsunuz? M.K.: Süper, süper. The line at the the airport was a long one. My huge backpack was starting to hurt and sleeplessness was finally getting to me as I tried to tune out the screeching of the children whose parents were 2 rows ahead of me in the line and uncaring of their offsprings’ behaviour. Still, absolutely nothing could drown out the happiness that was brewing inside me, nor supress the excitement that was trying to claw its way out. But how did I end up here? OK, let me rewind and start from the very beginning.

It all started when I decided to take the annual exam that TurkMSIC organized every year. The year before I had to cancel my Spain Research Exchange so I was feeling somewhat bitter, but I still had an aim: doing a Professional Exchange in Japan. I tried not to get my hopes up, though. It was a bit over-the-top goal; many people wanting, only few getting. Then the exam came and passed, and all I could do was wait. Next thing I knew, the results were being announced and I had a neon red flashlight in my head that read: “Japan, here I come!”

After that, time flew by so fast that I nearly couldn’t catch up. Visa was no problem, since Japan offered all Turkish citizens “Visa on arrival” unless they would be staying for longer than 3 months (or seek to reside and/or obtain employement in Japan). I prepared all the other necessary documents, sent them and waited for news from my to-be-Contact Person (CP); whoever that would be.

A short while later, my CP got in touch with me and informed me that I would be doing my Exchange Study at their university which was in Utsunomiya (a city that is 2 hours away from Tokyo by train). She was very patient with all the questions I asked and tried to make the process as easy as it could be for me. She answered everything I asked about the hospital, the staff dorm that I would be staying in, the city in general and even the most trivial stuff that I was concerned or curious about with patience.

aileleri tarafından önemsenmeyen ve iki sıra önümde çığlık atan çocukların seslerini duymazdan gelmeye çalışırken, sırt çantamın omuzlarımı acıttığını ve uykusuzluğun kendini belli ettiğini fark ettim. Yine de etrafta olup biten hiçbir şey mutluluğumu azaltamaz ve heyecanımı dindiremezdi. Peki, her şey nasıl başlamıştı? Gelin en başa dönelim.

Her şey TurkMSIC’in geleneksel olarak

düzenlediği sınava kayıt olmamla başladı. Bir önceki sene İspanya’daki araştırma programımı iptal etmek zorunda kaldığım için hala üzgündüm; ama artık yeni bir amacım vardı: Japonya’da değişim programına katılmak! Kendimi fazla umutlandırmadım, pek çok kişinin istediği ama pek azının kabul edildiği bir programdı. Sınav dönemi gelip çattı ve ardından yapabildiğim tek şey beklemekti. Sonuçlar açıklandığında ise kafamda aynı cümle dönüp duruyordu: Japonya, işte geliyorum!

Bu sürecin ardından zaman o kadar hızlı geçti ki,

bazen yetişemediğimi hissettim. Vize sorun olmadı; çünkü Japonya, üç aydan az kalacak Türk vatandaşlara (orada çalışma ya da yaşama istekleri dışında) havaalanında vize alma şansı sunuyordu. Vize dışındaki tüm gerekli belgeleri hazırlayıp, kim olduğunu henüz bilmediğim CP’den (Contact Person) irtibata geçmesini bekledim.

Kısa bir aradan sonra CP’m bana ulaştı ve

değişim programımı kendi üniversitelerinde, Utsunomiya’da (Tokyo’ya olan uzaklığı tren ile iki saat) yapacağımı söyledi. Bu süreci benim için olabildiğince kolaylaştırdı ve tüm sorularıma sabırla cevap verdi. Hastane, kalacağım yer, şehir ve aklıma gelen tüm detaylar konusunda kendisine rahatlıkla danışabildim.

CP’m bana olabileceği her konuda yardımcı olmasına rağmen yine de heyecanlıydım. Dünyanın diğer ucuna tek başıma gidecektim! Yolculuk vakti geldiğinde, midemi karıncalandıran tüm o duygular gitti, uçağın bir an önce inmesini ve bu kadar uzun süredir hayalini kurduğum ülkeyi görmeyi arzuluyordum. On iki saatin ardından kelimenin tam anlamıyla “hayaller gerçeğe dönüştü”.

CP’m bana iki anabilim dalı seçmemi söyledi:

her birinde iki hafta süren stajlarım olacaktı. Büyük bir şans eseri ilk tercihim olan Dermatoloji ve Plastik Cerrahi stajlarına kabul edildim. Staja Dermatoloji ile başlayacaktım. CP’m ile anabilim dalı başkanıyla tanışmaya giderken biraz heyecanlıydım (Japonların yabancı kişilerle pek anlaşamadığını duymuştum), ama anabilim dalı başkanı çok nazik ve yardımcıydı. Diğerleri de en az onun kadar naziktiler, beni evimdeymişim gibi rahat hissettirmek için ellerinden geleni yaptılar, Türkiye konusunda da oldukça meraklıydılar ve durmadan sorular sordular.

Hastanede deneyimim olmaması ve Temel Bilimler derslerimi yeni bitirmiş olmam nedeniyle daha çok gözlemci olsam da hastanedekiler beni her şeye dahil etmeye çalıştılar. Hastayı muayene ve tedavi ederken bana gerekli açıklamaları yaptılar. Anabilim dalı toplantılarını (tabi ki Japonca yapılıyordu) bana kısaca anlattılar. Stajım süresinde servisteki tek öğrenci bendim ama çalışanlar kendimi yalnız ya da dışlanmış hissetmemem için çaba harcadılar. Dermatoloji, uzmanlığımda düşündüğüm dallardan biri ve staj sırasında genel hatlarını görüp, artı ve eksilerini kıyaslama şansı buldum. Bundan daha iyi bir motivasyon düşünebiliyor musunuz ?

Even though my CP helped me as much as she could, I was still a bit nervous. I would be going to the other end of the world on my own! But when the time for me to finally depart came, all those feelings of being on pins and needles left me; instead, I couldn’t wait for the plane to land in the country I’ve been dreaming of visiting for so long. And after 12 hours; it was literally a “dream come true”. My CP had informed me that I would have to choose 2 departments in which my study would last for 2 weeks each. I was lucky enough to be accepted to my first two departments-of-choice; which happened to be Dermatology and Plastic Surgery. I started out with Dermatology. When my CP introduced me to the Head of Department I was a bit nervous (I had heard that Japanese people didn’t exactly get on well with foreign people) but he was so kind and helpful. The others were just as kind if not more; they did everything they could to make me feel at home and at ease. They were also very curious about Turkey, and asked questions non-stop. Even though I was more of an observer since I had only completed my pre-clinic studies and hadn’t experienced much about hospital, they tried to include me to everything they did. They explained and tutored me while examining and treating patients. They translated the basic stuff that was discussed at the board meetings (all of which were, naturally, in Japanese) At the time of my visit, I was the only student at Dermatology but the staff made sure I never felt lonely or left-out. Since Dermatology is one of the deparments I’m considering specializing in, it was a great experience that assisted me to have a general idea about the department and compare the pros and cons. Can you think of a better motivation?

Plastic Surgery proved to be a bit more handful. The working hours stretched unavoidably depending on the severity of the operations; but it was still amazing to participate in. It was also pretty eye-opening about how exhausting any sort of surgical career could be; and at same time how thrilling. If I may be so bold, I can even say that both departments offered me a great opportunity to experience the lives of Dermatologists and Plastic Surgeons first-hand. Since I spent the whole day with them; watching them, hearing them, at times discussing with them and learning with them; I was able to gain more familiarity and vision than I could have hoped for. It was a once-in-a-lifetime chance in more ways than one.

I spent most of my remaining time with the other exchange students and the Japanese students I met there. I was lucky enough to be in an environment that was so full of enthusiastic and helpful folk. Japanese people are actually very shy in general, so at first they seemed a bit distant but once you get to know each other, they open up and let you see how warm and friendly they really are. Everyone I met was so understanding and they did their best to make our Japan and exchange experience an unforgettable one. My CP and I are also trying our best to keep in touch even though sometimes school and other stuff keeps us extremely busy.

Plastik cerrahi ise daha yoğun bir dal olduğunu

kanıtladı. Çalışma saatleri vakanın komplikasyonuna göre önlenemez bir şekilde uzuyordu, ama yine de bunun bir parçası olmak çok zevkliydi. Aynı zamanda cerrahi dalların ne kadar yorucu olabilecekleri konusunda gözüm açıldı diyebilirim, tabi ne kadar heyecan verici oldukları konusunda da.

Kulağa oldukça iddialı gelse de her iki departman

bana Dermatolog ve Plastik Cerrah olarak yaşamanın nasıl bir şey olduğunu gösterdi. Vaktimin çoğunu onlarla, onları izleyerek, onları dinleyerek, onlarla tartışarak, onlardan öğrenerek geçirdim ve umduğumdan çok daha fazlasına sahip oldum. Gerçekten pek çok yönden hayatta bir kere yaşanabilecek bir fırsat yakalamıştım.

ve Japonya’da tanıştığım Japon öğrencilerle geçirdim. İstekli ve yardımcı kişilerin olduğu bir çevrede bulunduğum için gerçekten şanslıydım. Japonlar aslında oldukça utangaç insanlar, bu nedenle ilk zamanlarda size mesafeliymiş gibi gelebilirler; ama onları tanıdıkça aslında ne kadar sıcak ve arkadaş canlısı olduklarını göreceksiniz. Tanıştığım herkes çok anlayışlıydı ve bu değişim programının unutulmaz olması için gerçekten çok çalıştı. CP’m ve ben, dönem dönem okul programlarımız bizi zorlasa da, iletişimimizi sürdürmek için elimizden geleni yapıyoruz.

Japonya konusuna gelince, ne söylemeliyim bilemiyorum… Beklediğim ve umduğum her şeyin üstündeydi. Görmek istediğiniz ülkenin hayalini bu kadar uzun süre yaşayınca, gerçekten oraya vardığınızda her şey gerçek dışı kalıyor. Bazen hala stajım sanki bana ait bir hayal ürünüymüş gibi geliyor. Japonya sonu gelmez bir harikalar diyarı, etrafta gözlerinizin bakmaya doyamayacağı harika manzaralar, inanılmaz bir tarih ve içinde kaybolacağınız sınırsız sayı ve çeşitte geleneksel güzellik mevcut. Tüm bunlara ek olarak benim ülkeye sadece gezmek için değil, Japonya’nın en büyük araştırma hastanesinde bir ay boyunca tıbbi staj yapmak için gelmem heyecandan titrememe yetmişti. Hayal ettiklerimden çok daha fazlasıydı bu. İtiraf etmeliyim ki, buraya veda etmek benim için çok zor oldu, ama ne derler bilirsiniz: “Her güzel şeyin bir sonu vardır”.

Sona yaklaşırken, TurkMSIC’e ve staj değişimim

sürecinde çalışmış, benim inanılmaz bir akademik süreç geçirmemi, unutulmaz anılar yaşamamı ve dolu dolu gezmemi sağlamış herkese teşekkür etmek istiyorum. Umarım bu yazı, staj değişimi konusunda size ufak da olsa bir fikir verebilmiştir. Eğer daha fazlasını öğrenmek isterseniz, şey, aslında neden bu fırsatı denemiyor ve bu unutulmaz deneyimi kendiniz yaşamıyorsunuz?

As for Japan; well that is a bit hard to explain I guess…What can I say, Japan was everything I expected and more. When you dream about one day visiting the country you so badly want to see, it feels more surreal than anything you’ve ever known when it finally happens. Sometimes I still feel like that one month I spent there was a distant dream in the most wonderful dreamland ever. Japan is an endless fountain of wonders; there are so many beautiful landscapes for your eyes to feast upon, so much amazing history to experience and get lost in and an extremely vast array of traditional beauties beyond imagination. All of those combined with the fact that I was there to not only travel, but also experience a month of academic study on medicine in one of the biggest research hospitals in the country made me shake with excitement. It was so much more than I could have dreamed of. I have to admit it was painful to have to say goodbye; but I guess they have a point when they say “All good things must come to an end.” As my article comes to a close, I want to thank TurkMSIC and everyone who worked through the process of my exchange for making it possible for me to experience this unbelievably beautiful one month full of medical training, excessive travelling and invaluable memories. I hope that my article conjured up an image of what a Professional Exchange is like, even if it’s only vague. Hi everyone! I am Selin Tanyeri from Ege University Faculty

of Medicine TurkMSIC Local Committee. I am a sec-ond year medical student right now; I had my first experience in TurkMSIC through the incoming stu-dents, when they came to do their internships in our hospital in the summer of 2010. I would like to men-tion that, it was one of the best summers I had so far.

By this adventure I have experienced so many

things; such as meeting different cultures and im-proving my English by practicing, that I can not transfer all of them into an article entirely. If we con-sider that each experience we have always teaches us something; I’ve learned a lot. I have figured out that it wasn’t so easy to organize trips, to work as a team, to make sure you meet the widely variable of needs of people and solve their problems. As you become more involved in the job, you start to realize the abundance of things to be done and the details should never be overlooked. However, as long as you love what you do - I can say that it also brings a very big responsibility within -, you start to feel the joy of overcoming those problems.

Herkese merhaba! Ben Ege Yerel Kurulu'ndan Selin Tanyeri. Şu an ikinci sınıfım, TurkMSIC'te ilk deneyimimi 2010 yazında hastanemize staja gelen yabancı değişim öğrencileriyle yaşadığımı söyleyebilirim. Hemen eklemeliyim ki bu, şimdiye kadarki en güzel yazlarımdan biriydi. Gerek farklı kültürlerle tanışmak açısından,

gerekse İngilizce pratik açısından bana oldukça faydalı olan bu macerada, aslında bir yazıya tümüyle aktarılamayacak kadar çok şey yaşadım. Her deneyimin, bize birşeyleri mutlaka öğrettiğini düşünürsek, çok şey öğrendim. Geziler organize etmek, takım çalışmasının içinde bulunmak, gelen insanların çok çeşitli gereksinimleriyle ve mutlaka çıkan aksaklıklarla ilgilenmek olsun, pek de kolay işler değilmiş. İşin içine girdikçe, aslında yapılması gerekenlerin ve gözden kaçırılmaması gereken ayrıntıların ne kadar çok olduğunu fark ediyorsunuz. Ancak bunu severek yaptığınız sürece-ki bunun çok büyük bir sorumluluğu da beraberinde getirdiğini söyleyebilirim- önünüze çıkan problemlerle baş etmenin zevkini de yaşıyorsunuz.

Yabancı arkadaşlarımızı dekanlığımızın desteği ile öğrenci köyümüzde ağırladık. Hafta içi günlerde öğle saatlerinde bir buluşma noktası belirleyerek neredeyse her gün İzmir'in farklı semtlerine geziler düzenledik. Şehrimizdeki tüm müzeleri gezdik ki bu daha önce buraları görmemiş İzmirli arkadaşlarımız için de yararlı oldu. Hafta sonları çevre turistik bölgelere konaklamalı geziler düzenledik, bunların arasında Çeşme ve Kuşadası da vardı. Yaz sezonunda bol güneşli sahillerimizden yararlanmamak olmazdı tabi! Son olarak da İstanbul'a 3 günlük bir gezi düzenledik ki bu kendi adıma en çok keyif aldığım gezimizdi çünkü koca İstanbul'da iki İzmirli ve yaklaşık on tane yabancı arkadaşımızla pek çok yeri gezdik.

Geziler dışında, bir yemek partisi düzenledik. Bu

sırada çektiğimiz "Yemekteyiz" programı tadındaki videoları bir mini-film haline getirme planlarımız var.

Empati kurduğumuzda hepimizin rahatlıkla

anlayabileceği üzere, size çok yabancı bir ülkeye gittiğinizde(bu kararı alma aşamasında dahi) güvenilir insanlara ihtiyacınız vardır. Sizi yüzüstü bırakmayacak, herhangi bir sorununuz olduğunda başvurabileceğiniz, size rehberlik edecek... Ben de bu niteliklere sahip olmaya çalıştım, bunu başardığımı da düşünüyorum çünkü ayrılırken "arkadaşlarımızdan" aldığım geribildirimler bu yöndeydi. Diliyorum bu yaz da geçen yazki kadar eğlenceli bir ay geçireceğiz. Ülkemizi ve güzel şehrimiz İzmir'i en iyi şekilde tanıtmaya devam!

We hosted our incoming friends in our Student

Village with the support of our dean. By defining a meeting point at noontime on weekdays we organized trips to the different districts of Izmir, almost every day. We visited all the museums of our city and I guess it was also useful to our friends from Izmir who haven’t seen those places before. At the weekends, we organized trips with accommodation to the surround-ing touristic areas including Çeşme and Kuşadası. It wouldn’t be nice for them to miss our very sunny shores during the summer. Lastly we organized a trip to Istanbul for 3 days; which I enjoyed myself most, because we visited lots of places in large city of Istan-bul as only two people from Izmir and about ten for-eign students.

Beside the trips we organized a dinner party.

We took videos during the party and we are planning to bring those videos into a mini-movie in the taste of a TV show.

As we can clearly see by empathizing, when you

go to a foreign country (even in the decision-making process), you need reliable people who will guide, not neglect you and help you solve your problems. I tried to have these qualifications and I think I managed to do so; because the feedbacks from "our friends" led me think this way. I hope this summer goes by as en-tertaining as last year’s summer. We will continue to show our country and our beautiful city of Izmir to the incomings in the best way!

An exchange in Tunisia was an unexpected and surprising choice for many people when they heard about it. Tunisia, one of the North Africa’s developing countries, has a typical Mediterranean culture and provided me a very pleasant summer internship and met many of my expectations.

Tunisia has the typical Mediterranean climate

with an always-bright sun and many beautiful beaches. The country has been occupied several times in the history due to its natural beauty. It is a unique combination of many different cultures with the Ro-man-era structures, Ottoman-era effects which can be felt in many details, the Islamic-Arabic culture as the main of course and lastly with the French culture impressions.

It showed very similar features with Turkey with respect to socio-cultural perspective such as the life-style, cuisine, family structure etc. Primary and the mother language of the Tunisians is Arabic. Because most of their education is in French, almost everyone speaks French very fluently also. In addition, many people speak Spanish and/or Italian but few people speak English well. Therefore I decided to improve my French, which was at the beginner level then, in order to contact people there more easily. In Tunisia, the only faculty that accepts incom-ing exchange students was located in Tunis, the capi-tal. As for department selection, I was interested in only one: Pediatrics. I wrote my motivation letters and selected the departments according to it. Then I got accepted to the Pediatrics.

Tunus’ta tıp stajı, pek çok kişi için beklenmedik ve şaşırtıcı bir tercihti. Kuzey Afrika’nın gelişmekte olan ülkelerinden, tam bir Akdeniz ülkesi olarak kültürü bize çok da yabancı olmayan Tunus; benim için oldukça keyifli bir yaz stajı imkanı sağladı ve beklentilerimin çoğunu karşıladı. Ayrıca bana

birazdan okuyacağınız pek çok keyifli anı ve ilginç deneyimler kattı.

sayıda güzel sahile ve daima parlak güneşe sahip bir ülke... Tarihinde doğal güzellikleri sebebiyle defalarca işgal edilmiş. Roma döneminden kalan pek çok eser ve yapılara ek olarak hemen her ayrıntıda hissedilen Osmanlı döneminin, İslam-Arap ve son olarak da Fransız kültürünün yoğun etkileriyle ilginç bir sentez oluşmuş.

Hayat tarzı, yemek, alışveriş, aile yapısı vb.

özellikleriyle sosyo-kültürel açıdan Türkiye’ye oldukça benzerlik gösteriyordu. Ayrıca Türkleri ve Türkiye’yi çok sevdikleri için bu her yerde bir avantaj getiriyordu. Halkın ana dili Arapça, ancak eğitimlerinin büyük bölümü Fransızca olduğu için hemen herkes iyi derecede Fransızca konuşuyor. Ek olarak İtalyanca ve İspanyolca bilenler de var, ancak İngilizce bilenlerin sayısı oldukça düşük. Ben de daha rahat iletişim kurabilmek için gitmeden önce başlangıç seviyesindeki Fransızcamı geliştirmeye karar verdim.

Tunus’ta değişim öğrencisi kabul eden tek

fakülte, Tunus’un başkenti Tunis’teydi. Departman seçiminde ise ilgimi çeken tek bir bölüm vardı: Pediatri. Tercihlerimi ve motivasyon mektuplarımı da ona göre düzenleyince Pediatri’den kabul aldım.

In Tunisia, the only faculty that accepts incoming exchange students was located in Tunis, the capital. As for department selection, I was interested in only one: Pediatrics. I wrote my motivation letters and selected the departments according to it. Then I got accepted to the Pediatrics. The tickets were taken, all the preparations were completed and the time to fly to Tunisia came. One of the ASSOCIA-MED members came to the airport to meet me. At the same time, the business partner of my father came also and gave me support in my first day there. Then I settled to the hostel. All the incoming students (appx. 60 people) were stay-ing in the same big student hostel, which meant to me so many people to meet. It was my first abroad trip alone and I was staying at a hostel for the first time in my life. However, soon I adapted to the con-ditions even easier than I expected. I think the most important reason for this is that everyone was more or less in the same situation. Everyone came to this country for the first time, all of us were medical stu-dents and we had common features although we are from different cultures. After the short adaptation period, soon we started to make warm conversations with each other and plan social activities together for our free times.

Bilet alındı, tüm hazırlıklar tamamlandı ve

Tunus’a uçma vakti geldi. ASSOCIA-MED üyelerinden biri havaalanına beni karşılamaya gelmişti. Aynı zamanda babamın geleceğimi önceden haber verdiği bir iş arkadaşı da eşiyle gelip ilk günümde bana destek oldular. Sonra yurda yerleştim. Tunus’a gelen tüm değişim öğrencileri (yaklaşık 60 kişi) olarak büyük bir öğrenci yurdunda kalıyorduk. Bu da tanışacak pek çok insan demekti. Bu benim hem tek başıma ilk yurt dışı seyahatim hem de ilk öğrenci yurdu deneyimimdi. Ama koşullara beklediğimden daha kolay ve kısa sürede alıştım. Sanırım bunun en önemli sebebi herkesin aşağı yukarı aynı durumda olması idi. Kimse mükemmel İngilizce konuşmasa da birbirimizi çok rahat anlıyorduk. Herkes bu ülkeye ilk defa geliyordu, herkes tıp öğrencisiydi ve bambaşka kültürlerden de olsak hepimizin ortak paydaları vardı. Kısa sürede yurttaki hemen herkesle muhabbet kurup boş vakitlerimizde birlikte sosyal aktiviteler planlamaya başladık.

Bir haftalık gecikmeden sonra görevli bir öğrenci

Pediatri grubumuzu Pediatri Hastanesi’ne götürdü ve bizi bölüm başkanıyla tanıştırdı. Tunus’ta yazın mesai saatleri öğleye kadardı. Biz de 08:30 - 12:00 arasında hastanede kalıyorduk. Yurt ile hastane arasındaki ulaşımımızı taksiyle sağlıyorduk. Hastane çıkışı yoğunluktan taksi bulmakta oldukça zorlanıyorduk ama bir süre sonra bu konuda uzmanlaştık.

After a one week delay, a student, took us to the Pediatrics Hospital and we met the head of the de-partment there. In Tunisia, working hours end at noon in summer. We stayed at the hospital between 08:30 to 12:00 everyday. We traveled between the hostel and hospital by taxi. It was hard to find a taxi in rush hours, but we mastered in how to find a taxi in no time. Every morning, we started by attending morning reports. These meetings were held in French but since they talk very fast, it wasn’t easy to understand. After the meetings, we needed to find some residents to hang out with. They didn't assign a special assis-tant to look after us but the residents were helpful enough so we didn't have many problems. Although not so many, there were people who speak English well, with whom we communicated more conveniently. Still, with our smattering - French we could contact with most of the people in the hospital. However, the pre-school age patients couldn’t speak French, so the doctors explained their situation to us and then we were doing the physical examinations mostly. I have been in the Pediatric Oncology, Neonatal and General Pediatrics Services and the general clinic for pediatrics called Emer-gency, respectively. The residents in the Pediatric Oncology department were very helpful. They wanted to make sure that all of us understand the situation and the disease of the patient. We witnessed the

Bu toplantılar Fransızca oluyordu ama çok hızlı konuştukları için anlamakta biraz zorlanıyorduk. Toplantı sonraları kendimize peşine takılacağımız bir asistan bulmamız gerekiyordu. Bizden sorumlu belirli bir asistan atamadılar ama yardımsever asistanlar sayesinde çok sorun yaşamadık.

Fazla sayıda olmasa da iyi derecede İngilizce

bilenler vardı, onlarla daha rahat iletişim kurabildik ama çoğuyla çat pat Fransızcamızla da olsa anlaşabiliyorduk. Hastalar, özellikle okul öncesi yaşındakiler Fransızca bilmediği için onlarla pek diyalog kuramadık, ama asistanlar bize onların durumunu açıklıyordu ardından da muayene ediyorduk. Ben sırasıyla; Onkolojik Pediatri, Prematüre ve Genel Pediatri servisinde bulundum, sonra da Acil adı verilen klinik bölümünde çalıştım. Onkoloji bölümündeki asistanlar çok yardımcı oldular. Her birimizin seviyesine göre hastalıkları açıklayarak anladığımızdan emin olmak istiyorlardı. Onkolojik Pediatride bulunduğumuz süre içerisinde tedavisi tamamlanan 14 yaşındaki bir osteosarkom hastasının taburcu oluşuna tanık olduk. En güzel elbiselerini giymiş, mutlulukla hastaneden ayrılan kızın yüzünün ifadesi her şeye değerdi.

Serviste ilginç ve kronik pek çok vakayla

karşılaşma şansımız oldu, ancak 2. haftanın sonunda daha fazla şey yapabilmek için klinikte durmaya başladım. Sürekli yeni hasta görmek, muayene etmek ve teşhis koyma aşamasında bulunmak açısından bu bölümdeki vaktimin daha verimli ve eğlenceli geçtiğini söyleyebilirim. Klinikteki problem ise zaman kısıtlaması sebebiyle bebeklerin sakinleşmesini beklemeden hızla, çoğu zaman da zorla(!) muayene etmek ve bebeklerin de muayene boyunca ağlıyor olmalarıydı. Ancak bu koşullar altında nasıl muayene ve teşhis yapıldığını görmek de benim açımdan önemli bir deneyimdi. Genel olarak değerlendirdiğimde bu staj sonunda Pediatri uzmanı olma isteğim değişmedi, ancak üzerinde tekrar daha gerçekçi bir şekilde düşünmeme ve hayallerimi ona göre oluşturmama etkisi oldu. Ayrıca bir pre-klinik öğrencisi olarak klinik anlamda yaptığım her şeyin bana katkısı olduğunu, dolayısıyla motivasyonumun klinik öğrencilerine göre daha iyi korunduğunu söyleyebilirim.

discharge of a 14 year-old girl who has osteosarcoma within our rotation there. The big smile of the girl who wore her most beautiful dress was worth every-thing. We had the chance to encounter many inter-esting and chronic cases in the service but at the end of the 2nd week I started to do some clinics in order to practice more. I would say that the clinics were more useful and fun: seeing new patients everyday, examining and witnessing the diagnosing process etc. I think the main problem in the clinics was the quick and even forced (!) examinations to the crying babies without waiting them to calm down because of the time constraint. However, it was still an important experience to learn how to examine a crying baby in a short time. In general, I did not changed my mind to be a Pediatrician after that internship, however it helped me to think and reform my future plans in a more realistic way. Moreover, as a pre-clinical stu-dent, every clinical experience is important for me, therefore I could maintain my motivation better than the clinical incoming students.

After leaving the hospital, we were going straight to the dorm. While eating the lunch, we were decid-ing on the social activity to do that day. Tunisia is very rich in terms of touristic places. Although, the public transportation was not so good, we were able to go anywhere we want because the taxis were cheap and we were traveling in groups. "Medina" market, located at the city center was the place we visited most frequently. After getting used to the prices spe-cial to the buyers(!) and bargaining, it was an inter-esting market that you can find many authentic gifts. The multilingual and eloquent sellers were cutting the prices to 5 dinars, when they see that you are not happy with the initial price, which is 50 dinars. In every weekend, ASSOCIA-MED held paid tours for us to outside of the city. The most amazing and unforgettable experience among them was the desert trip. In this 3-day trip, we did everything that can be done in the desert: Camel tour, ATV racing, crazy tour with 4x4 cars, a visit to Tatooine, the city designed for Star Wars... In other weekends, we vis-ited other touristic cities of Tunisia. We did diving, paragliding, and many such activities. In addition, although not much interesting for me, there were a lot of party activities and of course an IFMSA classic: "International Food & Drink Day". In the kitchen shared by 4 rooms, we tried to represent our country with a single pan, a single cooker and a plenty of co-operation. As the only Turkish intern, I made lentil patties and buttermilk with the help of my Saudi roommate. With the amazement of seeing a salty drink for the first time, they found buttermilk re-freshing and tasty. Since I couldn't find the actual ingredients, I made the patties with couscous but they found it delicious. Some people even asked for a recipe.

Hastaneden çıkınca doğrudan yurda gidip öğle yemeğimizi topluca yerken o günün sosyal aktivitesine ve kimlerle gideceğimize karar veriyorduk. Tunus turistik mekanlar açısından çok zengindi. Toplu taşıma ve ulaşım ağı fazla iyi olmasa da taksilerin çok ucuz olması ve grup halinde gezmemiz sebebiyle istediğimiz her yere rahatlıkla gidebiliyorduk. Uğrak yerlerimizin başında şehir merkezindeki “Medina” çarşısı geliyordu. Satıcıların kişiye özel(!) fiyatlarına ve sıkı pazarlığa alıştıktan sonra bin bir çeşit otantik hediyeler bulabileceğiniz, ilginç bir çarşıydı. 5-6 dil konuşan ve laf cambazı satıcılar, başlangıçta 50 dinar dediği bir şeyi sizin fiyata razı olmadığınızı gördükçe 5 dinara kadar indirebiliyorlardı.

Her hafta sonu ASSOCIA- MED’in bizim için

ayarladığı ücretli şehir dışı geziler vardı. Bunlar içinde en unutulmaz ve en güzeli Çöl Gezisiydi. 3 gün olarak planlanan gezimizde neredeyse çölde yapılabilecek her şeyi yaptık: Deve turu, ATV yarışı, 4x4 jiplerle çılgın tur, Star Wars için yapılmış olan Tatooine şehrinin setine ziyaret… Diğer haftasonları da Tunus’un turistik şehirlerine gittik, dalış, yamaç paraşütü gibi etkinlikler yaptık. Bir de şahsen çok ilgimi çekmese de bol bol parti etkinliği vardı, ve tabii ki bir IFMSA klasiği: “International Food & Drink Day”. 4 oda ortak kullandığımız mutfağımızda 1 tencere 1 tava bol yardımlaşma ve sevgimizle ülkemizi temsil etmeye çalıştık. Ben tek Türk olarak Suudi oda arkadaşımın da yardımıyla mercimek köftesi ve ayran yaptım. İlk kez tuzlu bir içecek içmenin şaşkınlığıyla beraber, ayranı ferahlatıcı ve güzel buldular. Mercimek köftesini malzeme bulamadığım için kuskustan yaptım ama çok sevildi ve tarifini isteyenler çıktı.

"Couscous" has a very important role in tradi-tional Tunisian food culture. It is a hearty meal that is made out of semolina with the mixture of vegeta-bles and meat, it tastes like grains. There are two things that is never missing in their salads: eggs and tuna. In addition, you can taste Harisa, a special spice made with hot pepper, in every meal you eat. Their green tea with mint is also worth mentioning. It is brewed in a special brewer with lots of sugar and drank after every meal. Although I heard about some beautiful places more where I didn’t have the chance to see, the time passed so fast and saying good-bye was even harder than I guessed. We gave a Good-bye party in our kitchen with Turkish coffee and delight in my last night. It is a great pleasure to have friendships with future doctors with whom I shared so many things in a month, which is beyond everything for me I have mentioned. I certainly recommend Tunisia and the medical exchange experience in a foreign country with no doubt. I believe it will be one of the most beautiful memories of your life and you will be back home with pleasant rewards. Thanks to IFMSA, AS-SOCIA-MED and of course to TurkMSIC.

Tunus’un geleneksel yemek kültüründe “kuskus” büyük bir yer tutuyor. İrmikten yapılan, tadı bulgura benzeyen ve özel bir biçimde sebze ve etle pişirilen doyurucu bir yemek… Salatalarından hiç eksik olmayan iki şeyse: yumurta ve ton balığıydı. Ayrıca Harisa adı verilen hayli acı pul biberden yapılan özel baharatı da her yemeğin içinde bulabilirsiniz. Yemek kültürü demişken tabii ki naneli yeşil çayından bahsetmemek de olmaz. Özel bir çaydanlıkta yapılan bol şekerli ve taze naneli yeşil çay bizim Türk çayı gibi her yemekten sonra içiliyor.

Hala gidemediğim ve güzelliğini duyduğum

yerleri kalsa da zaman göz açıp kapayıncaya kadar geçti ve ayrılık tahmin ettiğimden de zor oldu. Son gecemde de Türk kahvesi- lokum ikilisiyle mutfağımızda ufak bir veda partisi verdik. Dünyanın pek çok köşesinden, 1 ay boyunca yediğimiz içtiğimiz ayrı gitmeyen ve çok güzel şeyler paylaştığım doktor adayı arkadaşlarımın olması çok harika bir kazanım, bana göre tüm bu saydıklarımın da ötesinde. Bu deneyimi ve ayrıca Tunus’u önermekte hiç tereddüt etmiyorum. Hayatınızın en güzel anıları arasında yer alacağını ve keyifli kazanımlarla döneceğinizi umuyorum.

What is SCOPE, and what does it mean to you? SCOPE means a lot to me and is very special. When I was in my last year in high school, I heard about the SCOPE exchange program and thought to myself “What a nice thing they do”. As I started med school I looked for TurkMSIC (Turkish Medi-cal Students’ International Committee), so I was a SCOPE volunteer right from the moment I entered the faculty. It’s been two years now, and everyday I feel as excited as I was on my first day, and I try to share my experience with the new SCOPE vol-unteers and help everyone with the best I can. Briefly SCOPE means “medical faculty” in a way to me. What is T4PE, why is it organized? T4PE “Training for Professional Exchange” is the most important project of SCOPE. I think, in order for all of our effort, paper work and the endless hours working on our database to succeed, a suc-cessful T4PE should be organized annually. In fact T4PE’s form is very simple. Every year we send more than 300 students on Professional Ex-change, but are they ready for this? What do they expect from this exchange? Are they aware how to behave when they meet a different culture? T4PE contains all the answers to these questions and every year it aims, before the busy summer season when we send our outgoing students on exchange, to prepare the students for the exchange via edu-cation.

SCOPE senin için ne ifade ediyor? SCOPE'nin benim için çok ayrı bir yeri var. Henüz lise son öğrencisiyken haberim olmuştu benim SCOPE değişimlerinden. 'Ne güzel şeymiş' demiştim o zaman kendi kendime. Fakülte başladıktan sonra da hep aradım nerede bu TurkMSIC diye. Yani daha tıp fakültesine girdiğim dakikadan beri bir SCOPE gönüllüsüyüm. İki yıldır her gün bu aileye yeni katılmış gibi heyecanla herkes için elimden geleni yapıyor, bir yandan da tecrübelerimi yeni 'SCOPEcilere' aktarabilmek için çabalıyorum. Kısacası SCOPE benim için 'tıp fakültesi' demek bir anlamda. T4PE nedir, neden yapılıyor? T4PE dediğimiz şey aslında SCOPE'nin en önemli projesi. Bu güzel kısaltmanın acilimi 'Training for Professional Exchange-Profesyonel Staj Değişimi Eğitimi' Tüm yıl boyunca yaptığımız onca çalışmanın, topladığımız belgelerin, databasede harcadığımız saatlerin amacına ulaşabilmesi için her yıl iyi bir T4PE geçirilmeli kanımca. Aslında çok basit bir mantıkla oluşturulmuş T4PE. Biz su anda yurtdışına 'Profesyonel Staj Değişimi ile 300'u aşkın öğrenci göndermekteyiz her yıl. Peki, bu öğrencilerimiz bu değişime ne kadar hazır? Bu değişimden beklentileri neler? Farklı bir kültürle karşılaştıklarında nasıl davranabilecekleri konusunda fikir sahibiler mi? Bunların hepsini içeren T4PE en çok öğrenci gönderdiğimiz yaz donemi öncesinde öğrencileri SCOPE değişimine hazırlamayı kendisine misyon edinmiş, teması eğitim olan etkileyici bir proje.

Koordinatörlüğünü üstlendiğin bu T4PE’in sana kattıkları nelerdir? T4PE koordinatörü olmak benim için çok önemli bir adımdı. Yusuf'un koordinatör seçildiğime dair mailinden sonra ne kadar çok sevindiğimi unutamam. Bu andan T4PE Sertifika Töreni'ne kadar gecen zamanda T4PE'in bana kattıkları yadsınamaz. Aslında bu benim ilk organizasyonumdu. Bu yönden ayrı bir özelliği var benim için. Ayrıca bu sene T4PE'i koordine ederken yepyeni bir T4PE yapma isteğindeydim. Bu sebeple içerdiği tüm eğitimleri elden geçirmek gerektiğini düşünüyordum. Düşündüklerimin birçoğunu başarmış olmak da beni ayrıca mutlu ediyor. Tüm bu organizasyon sırasında takım olarak çalışabilmek ve zaman planlaması yapabilmek konusunda kendimi çok geliştirdiğime inanıyorum. Gecen yıla göre T4PE bu yıl daha erken yapıldı, bunun yararları, fikirlerin? Evet, bu sene T4PE'i daha erken yapmak istedik. Aslında bunun gelecekte de böyle olması gerektiği düşüncesindeyim. T4PE'in eğitim yapısı aslında biraz farklı. Biz eğitimleri 'LEO'lara veriyoruz. Onlar gidip kendi yerellerindeki giden öğrencilere bu eğitimleri aktarıyorlar. Bu sebeple LEO'ların geri döndüklerinde bu eğitimi verecek zamanları olduğundan emin olmak istedik. Dediğim gibi T4PE kesinlikle geç kalmaması gereken bir proje.

Being this year’s coordinator, what were the benefits of T4PE for you? Being T4PE coordinator was very important to me. I can’t forget how happy I was when I got Yusuf’s (Yusuf Dursun, NEO) mail telling me, my application was accepted. I can’t deny how much I have benefitted from that time till the moment I gave the certificates to the T4PE par-ticipants. Actually, this year’s T4PE is very spe-cial to me because it was my first organization. Also this year I wanted to create a brand new T4PE, I thought a revision was necessary and went through all the previous trainings. Being able to succeed most of what I planned also gives me pleasure. I believe during the whole process I improved mostly on time manage-ment and working as a team. Compared to last year T4PE was held earlier, what were the benefits, your thoughts? Yes, we wanted to organize T4PE earlier this year. Actually, I think it should be like this in future too. T4PE’s form of training is a little bit different, we train the LEOs (Local Exchange Officer) and they train the outgoing students in their Local Committees. This year, we wanted to make sure the LEOs had enough time to pass the trainings. As I said, T4PE should never ever be delayed.

Are the outgoing students informed about T4PE, how were the feedbacks you got from them? I don’t think they are informed enough, yet. There are different reasons to it: first, T4PE is a very new project, we just organized the third one this year. Second; previous T4PEs were organized a bit late, so the training was not delivered as planned. As we work on timing, T4PE will become more widespread and reach its goals more effectively. Was there anything you wanted to add to T4PE’s program, but you couldn’t due to time restriction? What else can be included? In fact T4PE has a broad spectrum of contents. Looking at T4PE as a trainer I realized that there are so many different trainings that could have been in-cluded; but I think it is best to keep the mandatory ones. Adding extra trainings will slow down T4PE and might change the emphasis it tries to put on cer-tain subjects. So, there wasn’t anything I couldn’t add to the program, but good ideas might come up in the future.

Outgoingler T4PE’ten haberdar mı, geri bildirimler nasıl? Bence henüz yeterince haberdar değiller. Bunun farklı nedenleri var: birincisi T4PE daha çok yeni bir proje. Bu sene üçüncüsünü yaptık henüz. İkinci nedeni ise geçmiş yıllardaki T4PE'lerin biraz geç kalması dolayısıyla eğitimlerin yerellerde tam olarak uygulanamamış olması. Zamanlaması iyi yapıldığı zaman T4PE yavaş yavaş daha iyi bir şekilde yayılacak ve amacına çok daha iyi ulaşacaktır. T4PE’e eklemek isteyip, zaman sıkıntısı nedeniyle sığmayanlar neler? Daha başka neler eklenebilir? T4PE çok geniş bir konuya sahip aslında. Eğitmen kimliğimle düşündüğümde pek çok eğitimin T4PE'e uygun olduğunu fark etmiştim. Fakat ben her zaman sadelikten yana olan bir insan olarak sadece zaruri olan eğitimlerin verilmesi taraftarıyım. Programa eklenecek çok fazla konu ve eğitim T4PE'i hantallaştıracak ve amacından uzaklaştıracaktır. Bu sebeple T4PE'e eklemek isteyip ekleyemedim bir şey yoktu. Ama neler eklenebilir konusunda belki ileride güzel fikirler T4PE'in gelişmesine katkı sağlayabilir.

What were the difficulties you experienced from the moment you sent your motiva-tion letter to the NEO until now? Yes, I still remember the moment I wrote the mail, then I was chosen as coordinator, and I knew I had to start preparing right away. The first difficulty was choosing the appropriate date, we didn’t want to be late; yet, we had to find a date that was suitable for everyone. After that, as an innovative person, with the help of our New Tech-nologies Support Division Coordinator Mert Çam, we designed a new logo for T4PE. This logo was appreciated by TurkMSIC, which kept us moti-vated and enthusiastic. Then, it was time to pre-pare the T4PE agenda; I sat down and excluded all the trainings I thought were distractive on T4PE’s aim and mission. I worked on forming new modules, and when all was done, I was very happy to see all these changes were useful. Did you get any help during the organiza-tion, from whom? Of course, all this would not have been possible without ‘my teammates’. With the help of our Local Committee President Melis Baykara, treas-urer Battal Emre Şahin, my assistants Selin Naz Erdem and Serkan Orhun Ocak, we succeeded everything together. Also our former TurkMSIC president (also a well known TurkMSIC Trainer) Ahmet Murt and our current TurkMSIC president Davut Çekmecelioğlu helped me during the whole process and supported me all the time. I would like to thank them one more time for their contri-bution on T4PE.

NEO’ya motivasyon mektubu attığın andan su ana kadar karşılaştığın zorluklar oldu mu? Nelerdi? Evet, hala hatırlıyorum o mektubu attığım anı. Ardından 'T4PE koordinatörü' seçildiğimi öğrendim. Ve tabi ki hazırlıklara başlamalıydım. Karsılaştığım ilk zorluk tarih belirlemeydi. Geç kalmak istemedik ve çoğu kişiye uygun bir tarih olmasına dikkat ettik. Bunun ardından yenilikten yana bir insan olarak T4PE logosu üzeride 'Yeni Teknolojiler Destek Birimi Koordinatörümüz Mert Çam'la beraber çalıştık ve yeni bir logo oluşturduk. Logomuz tüm TurkMSIC çevrelerinden beğeni topladı. Bu da motivasyonumu oldukça arttırdı. Ardından sıra T4PE agendasını hazırlamaya gelmişti. Eğitmen kimliğimle masaya oturdum ve T4PE'in amacından uzak olduğunu düşündüğüm eğitimlerin birer birer üstünü çizdim. Yeni eğitim modülleri oluşturmak için çalıştım. Her şey bittiğinde bu değişimlerden hepsinin yararlı olduğunu görmek beni çok mutlu etti. Organizasyon konusunda yardım aldın mı, kimlerden? Tabi ki yerel kurulumdaki 'takım arkadaşlarım' olmadan bunların hiçbirini yapamazdım. Başta Başkanımız Melis Baykara ve Mali Koordinatörümüz Battal Emre Şahin olmak üzere yine pek çok kişinin yardımı sayesinde ben ve asistanlarım ( Selin Naz Erdem, Serkan Orhun Ocak) tüm yükün altından kalkmayı başardık. Ayrıca eğitimlerin hazırlanması sırasında eğitmen kimlikleriyle hem eski TurkMSIC başkanımız Ahmet MURT hem de şimdiki başkanımız Davut ÇEKMECELİOĞLU yardımlarını çekmediler ve bana destek oldular. Hepsine bir kez daha T4PE'in bu şekilde geçmesine katkılarından dolayı teşekkür ediyorum.

Did you feel any loss of motivation, if so how did you overcome it? Actually I did not have any loss of motivation about T4PE itself. But, of course when I was feeling ill or when I had an exam, I tried to compensate the frus-tration with the best time management I could ar-range. Do you think T4PE should become a national project, why? T4PE should definitely become a national project, now without a doubt we all agree on T4PE’s neces-sity. Obviously, after three T4PE’s we have a serious amount on information and output to share. From this moment on, TurkMSIC should come together and think how they can improve this project, so as a result T4PE needs to be a national project. Do you think participants other than LEOs should be accepted to T4PE? Should it be-come a broader organization including all the students who will go on exchange? Actually, it is a question I ask to myself too. I would say “yes, other participants should be included”, but the main concern is not a question of should or shouldn’t, but how. No one imagines a T4PE in a form a boring lecture, with more than 300 people. In the future T4PE can be opened to different partici-pants but the core concept should not be deformed.

Motivasyon düşüklüğü yaşadın mı, yaşadıysan bunun üstesinden nasıl geldin? Aslında T4PE konusunda motivasyonum hiç düşmedi diyebilirim. Ancak sınav, hastalık gibi zamanlarda küçük düşüşler yaşasam da zaman planlaması yaparak elimden geldiği kadar bunların üstesinden gelmeye çalıştım. Sence T4PE ulusal proje olmalı mı, neden? Bence T4PE kesinlikle bir ulusal proje olmalı. Artık T4PE'in gerekliliği konusunda kimsenin bir şüphesinin kaldığını sanmıyorum. Bu sene de üçüncüsünün de düzenlenmesiyle beraber çıktılarının da belli bir düzeye geldiği aşikar. Bu noktadan sonra TurkMSIC el ele verip bu projeyi nasıl geliştirebileceğini düşünmeli. Bunun için de T4PE bir TurkMSIC ulusal projesi olmalıdır. T4PE’e LEO’lar hariç katılımcılar alınmalı mı? Daha geniş çaplı bir proje olmalı mı, değişime hak kazanmış tüm öğrencilerin katılım göstereceği bir organizasyon olarak mesela? Bu aslında benim de kendime sorduğum sorulardan biri. Aslında kendi kişisel görüşüm 'evet, alınmalı'. Ama bu noktada bence asil soru ne yapılacağından çok nasıl yapılacağı. Kimse amfide 300 kişinin toplanacağı ve birinin ders anlatacağı bir T4PE hayal etmiyor, etmemeli. İleride farklı katılımcılar da eklenebilir. Fakat dediğim gibi konsept deforme olmamalı.

Application and acceptation procedure Every student in our faculty can apply for

IFMSA exchange program after his second or third year of study. In second year for research exchange, in third year for professional exchange... Students have to pass an English test. The test consists of Eng-lish grammar and medical vocabulary. Students can get some extra points for their participations in IF-MSA projects - for administration work, project lead-ing or temporary participating. Extra points mean definite percentage of student’s result in English de-pending on activities in IFMSA. According to their result students can choose from the list of countries.

In my case, I have got this internship possi-

bility in Turkey in the second round, one student did not cooperate as it was required and this place was offered again.

After the typical acceptation procedure starts,

students have to pay the entrance fee (300 Euros), fill the application forms as required and wait for the card of acceptance (CA). I was very lucky that I had been accepted to Ege University in Izmir (my first choice of university), in the Department of Internal Medicine (my second choice of department). More-over, my schoolmate Petr and another student from Medical faculty in Olomouc, Eva were also accepted to this University.

Preparation for the trip to Turkey After getting my card of acceptance I bought

a flying ticket. Visa or special vaccination was not necessary.

Arrival to Izmir, accommodation,

meals When we arrived to İzmir, Turkish students

(Contact People) were waiting for our Czech group in the metro station and they took us to our dormitory. We had a room with two beds, our own shower and toilet. Kitchen was available for all the students in one building; it was without equipment so we did not use it at all. Washing machine was available for a small fee. Dormitory was clean and comfortable. Meals were provided in the hospital, I enjoyed them a lot! We had one meal per day, portions were big enough and we had possibility to try typical Turkish home made meal. Breakfasts and dinners were on our own; mostly we bought some food from supermarkets or visited some of the cheap restaurants nearby. Prices were close to the prices in the Czech Republic.

Kayıt ve kabul işleri Bizim fakültemizde öğrenciler ikinci veya üçüncü sınıftan sonra IFMSA’in değişim programına katılabilmekte. İkinci sınıftan itibaren araştırma değişimine, üçüncü sınıfla beraber de profesyonel staj değişimine...

Öğrenciler, İngilizce dilbilgisi ve tıbbi terimler bilgisini ölçen bir sınava giriyorlar. IFMSA etkinliklerinde rol alındığında da -proje sorumlusu olmak veya projelere destekte bulunmak, aktivitelere katılmak gibi- fazladan puan sağlanabiliyor. Bu puanlar da direkt yüz üzerinden sınav sonucuna ekleniyorlar. Tabii en sonda da elde ettiğiniz toplam puana göre listeden ülke seçmek kalıyor.

Bana gelirsek, ben Türkiye stajı imkanını

ikinci turda elde ettim. Bir başka öğrenci gereklilikleri yerine getirmekte gecikince, bu kontrat tekrardan sunulmuştu.

Öğrencilerin, kazandıkları yeri kabul ettikten

sonra, değişim ücretini -300 avro- yatırıp, kayıt formlarını doldurup kabul cevaplarını beklemeleri gerekiyor. Benim şansıma, İzmir’de Ege Üniversitesi’ne kabul edildim ki ilk tercihimdi zaten. Bölüm olarak da hemen ikinci tercihim olan Dahiliye Anabilim Dalı’na gidecektim. Ayrıca fakülteden arkadaşım Petr ve Olomouc’taki tıp fakültesinden bir başka öğrenci arkdaşım, Eva da bu üniversiteye kabul edilmişti.

Türkiye yolculuğuna hazırlık Kabul yazımı aldıktan sonra uçak biletimi

satın aldım. Ülkemden vize istenmiyordu. Aşı olma gerekliliği de yoktu.

Practice in hospital As I have already mentioned before, I was

accepted in the Department of Internal Medicine. First day I had an appointment with the chief of the department, Prof. Dr. Fehmi Akçiçek. He arranged two weeks of clerkship in the Nephrology Depart-ment and two weeks of clerkship in the Cardiology Department. I spent this time with two other Czech students. We took a part in ward rounds, our super-vising doctor explained us some basic facts about patients with renal failure and other usual nephrological diagnosis. We also had a possibility to observe a kidney biopsy and bone marrow aspira-tion. My stay in cardiology was more interesting for me. We had a perfect tutor, Associate Professor Dr. Oğuz Yavuzgil. Every day started with a ward round with presentation and discussion of the cardiological cases, treatment plans and differential diagnosis. We learnt how to interpret X-ray pictures, ECG and laboratory results. We observed some catheterization procedures and we were taken to the transplantology unit. Dr. Yavuzgil told us a lot about the health care system in Turkey, about ethical principals of doctors’ occupation, about specificities of Turkish culture and Turkey as a whole. I really appreciate this clerkship in cardiology and I am sure that it will help me in my future studies and my work itself.

We spent from 2 to 7 hours in hospital every

week day; it depended on the program of our super-visor.

İzmir’e varış, konaklama, yemekler Vardığımızda, Türk öğrenciler bizim Çek

öğrenci grubumuzu bekliyorlardı. Metro istasyonunda buluştuk ve onlar bizi kalacağımız yurda götürdüler. Odamız iki kişilikti, kendi duşu ve tuvaleti vardı. Binadaki mutfak bizim kullanımımıza açıktı; ancak fazla gereç olmadığı için kullanamadık maalesef. Çamaşır makinalarından ufak bir ücret karşılığında yararlanabiliyorduk. Yurt tamamen temiz ve rahattı. Öğle yemekleri hastanede temin edildi ve gerçekten onları çok lezzetli buldum! Günde bir öğünümüz karşılanıyordu; ama porsiyonlar fazlaca büyüktü. Ayrıca klasik ev yapımı Türk yemeklerini tadabilme olanağı elde ettik. Kahvaltı ve akşam yemeklerini kendimiz sağlayacaktık. Onlar içinse çoğunlukla marketlerden alışveriş yaptık, yakınlardaki ucuz retoranlara gittik. Fiyatlar Çek Cumhuriyeti’ndeki fiyatlara yakındı.

Hastane

Daha önce dediğim gibi Dahiliye’ye kabul edilmiştim. İlk gün Anabilim Dalı Başkanı, Prof. Dr. Fehmi Akçiçek ile görüşmem vardı. Kendisi iki haftalık Nefroloji ve yine iki haftalık Kardiyoloji stajlarını bana açıkladı. Bu zaman zarfında diğer iki Çek öğrenciyle beraberdim. İlk stajımda serviste vizitlere katıldık, danışman hocamız böbrek yetmezliği ile diğer yaygın böbrek hastalıkları tanısı ve hastaları hakkında temel bilgiler anlattı. Ayrıca böbrek biyopsisi ve kemik iliği aspirasyonu işlemlerini gözleme fırsatı bulduk. Kardiyolojideki stajım benim için daha anlamlıydı. Harika bir hocamız vardı, Doç. Dr. Oğuz Yavuzgil. Her sabah vizitlerle, vaka sunumlarıyla, ayırıcı tanı ve tedavi yaklaşımlarını tartışmakla geçiyordu. Sonra, X-ray filmlerini, EKG ve labaratuvar sonuçlarını yorumlamayı öğrendik. Kateter uygulamalarını ve transplant unitesini gözlemleyebildik. Dr. Yavuzgil bize Türkiye’deki sağlık sisteminden, buradaki doktorluk mesleğinin etik temellerinden, Türk kültürünün özelliklerinden ve genel olarak Türkiye’den bahsetti. Ben gerçekten kardiyolojideki stajımdan çok memnun kaldım ve eminim ki, ilerideki çalışmalarımda ve işimde bana yardımcı olacak bilgiler edindim. Hastanede hafta içleri 2 ile 7 saat arasında vakit geçiriyorduk, bu süre danışmanımızın programına göre değişiyordu. Türk ve Çek Hastane Karşılaştırması

Sadece bir ay kalmam nedeniyle Türkiye ve Çek Cumhuriyeti hastanelerini karşılaştırmak zor. Zaten ben de bu ayrımı yapabilmek için tıbbi girişimler, uygulamalar, tedavi planları, hasta yönetimi gibi konularda yeterli bilgi ve birikim sahibi değilim. Fakat, bu süre dahilinde bazı farklılıklar, özellikle de organizasyon ve çalışma düzeninin yönetimi, dikkati kolaylıkla çekiyor.

Comparison of Turkish hospital to

Czech hospital After just one month of staying, it is very

hard to compare Czech hospitals to Turkish ones. I am not educated and experienced enough to see the differences in medical procedures, treatment plans and patient management. On the other hand, I could recognize some differences, mostly about the organi-zation and the administration of work during my days in the hospital.

The capacity of Ege University hospital is

very similar to my university hospital in Brno. There is also a separate Children’s Hospital in Brno, the same was in Ege Hospital-Izmir and is it was proba-bly renewed. All of the rooms for patients and doctors were equipped with new furniture and air-conditioned. Instruments and equipment were in very high quality. I could notice just one bigger differ-ence: In Brno and the Czech Republic generally com-puters are much more used. We use a few types of computer programs created specially for the hospitals or outpatient clinics. In Ege University computer sys-tem is the same in whole hospital and every lab re-sult, X-ray pictures, MRI pictures, patients’ docu-mentations etc. are hold in this system. Beside this, we use also paper documentation.

I was also surprised when I heard that the

relatives can be with their patient the whole day. In my country relatives are allowed to be in hospital just for a few hours per day. (Except children patients, in these cases parents can be with their child all day long). This made an impact on me. It definitely helps patients in psychological area; they can feel safer and they can share their pain and problems with their relatives. And moreover, the family can help the pa-tient to deal with the problems in both psychological and physical ways.

Ege Üniversitesi’ndeki hastanenin kapasitesi benim Brno’daki üniversite hastanemle benzerdi. Brno’daki gibi ayrı bir çocuk hastane binası vardı ve muhtemelen yenilenmişti. Tüm hasta ve doktor odaları da yeni mobilyalarla döşenmiş, ve klimalıydı. Aletler ve malzemelerin hepsi en iyi kalitedeydi. Bir de şöyle bir farklılık vardı: Brno’da ve Çek Cumhuriyeti’nde bilgisayarlar daha çok kullanılır, birden çok bilgisayar yazılımı hastaneler veya poliklinikler için ayrı ayrı programlanmıştır. Ege Üniversitesi’nde bilgisayar sistemi tüm hastanede tek ve her bilgi, laboratuar sonuçları, X-ray filmleri, MRI’lar, hasta dosyaları vs. tek bir program dahilinde. Bunun dışında biz de kağıt üzerinde belgelemeyi kullanıyoruz.

Beni oldukça şaşırtan başka bir konu ise hasta yakınlarının, hastaların başında tüm gün kalabilmeleriydi. Bu izin benim ülkemde sadece günde birkaç saattir (Pediyatrik hastalar dışında; tabii onların velileri hep yanlarında olabiliyor). Bu bende önemli bir etki yarattı. Çünkü bu durum hastalara psikolojik açıdan kesinlikle olumlu yansıyacaktır, kendilerini daha güvende hissedebilirler, sıkıntılarını ve problemlerini rahatlıkla yakınlarıyla paylaşabilirler. Yakınları da hastaya hem fiziksel olarak hem ruhsal olarak destekte bulunabilirler.

Sonuçta, Türkiye’nin böylesine önemli bir

hastanesinde bulunmak, Türkiye ve Türkiye’deki sağlık sistemi hakkında bu kadar çok şey öğrenmek harika bir deneyimdi.

Sosyal program ve etkinlikler

İzmir’deki sosyal programımız oldukça zengindi. İlk haftasonu Kuşadası plajlarında, ikinci haftasonuysa Çeşme’nin yazlık yerlerinde vakit geçirdik. Daha sonra CP’lerimiz tarafından Efes ve Şirince’ye geziler düzenlendi. Son haftasonumuzda ise İstanbul’daydık ve sanırım en çok beğendiğim gezi de bu oldu. İzmir’in içinde de gezip görülebilecek birçok yere gittik tabi ki. Haftaiçleri, öğleden sonra bizleri Agora’ya, Asansör’e – ki burda çok eski, tarihi bir asansör bulunmakta-, pazarlara, Kordon boyuna, Kadifekale’ye, İzmir‘in tarihi ile ilgili müzelere, etnografya ve arkeoloji müzelerine götürdüler. Gece klüplerinde eğlendik, Bornova Küçükpark’taki restoranlarda, kafelerde Türk mutfağından bol bol tadabilme imkanı bulduk. Elbette iletişim dilimiz hep İngilizce’ydi ve ben de pratik yapabilme şansı bulduğum için ayrıca mutluyum.

En son olarak Bu olağanüstü deneyim için IFMSA’e

gerçekten teşekkürler. Hastane pratiği, gezmek, yeni insanlarla tanışmak ve kültürel farklılıkları gözlemlemek... Tüm bunları kapsayan muhteşem bir organizasyondu. Bunu sağlayan herkese teşekkürler, özellikle de Argin Kubin, Selin Tanyeri ve Gurur Garip’e.

Finally, it was a perfect experience to stay in such an important hospital in Turkey and to learn more about the medicine and Turkey itself.

Social program and free time activities Social program in İzmir was very rich. We

spent the first weekend on the beaches in Kuşadası and the second weekend in seaside resort in Ceşme. For the third weekend, we had a trip, arranged by our CPs, to Efes and Şirince. And we spent the last week-end in İstanbul, which was probably the best trip ex-perience. We visited a lot of places in İzmir also. We were taken to Agora, Asansor – ancient elevator, ba-zaars, Kordon, Kadifekale Castle and history muse-ums of Izmir: Ethnographical and Archeological Mu-seum during the week in the afternoons. We also had a lot of fun in night clubs and we had the chance to try a lot of typical Turkish cuisine, in restaurants in Small Park, Bornova. Of course, the main language of the conversations was English and I am really happy for the opportunity to practice it.

Conclusion Many thanks to IFMSA organization for this

amazing experience. It was a perfect connection of hospital practicing, travelling, meeting new people and learning about cultural differences. I am grateful for all of the organization; special thanks to Argın Kubin, Selin Tanyeri and Gurur Garip.

harika bir dört hafta hayal edin – Başkent Prag: en görkemlisi Prag Kalesi olan ve onun altında boy gösteren yüzlerce tarihi kule. Tarih ve modern mi-mari birbiriyle o kadar yumuşak bir biçimle iç içe geçiyor ki herşeyin aynı dönemde inşa edildiğini düşünebilirsiniz.

Güney Moravya’nin incisi – Brno her yana yayılmış üzüm bağları ve şarap mahzenleri ile çevrelenmiş, “kadınlar, şarap ve şarkı söylemek” deyiminin ne anlama geldiğini tam anlamıyla göre-bileceğiniz ve size Moravia ruhunu tattıracak Brno şehri.

Cesky Krumlov – Avrupa’nın en güzel şehri olduğu söylenen ve güney Bohemya’da bulunan ketum bir kent. Ve tüm bunlar dışında katılabile-ceğiniz pek çok gezi – geziler yerel sorumlunuz ve contact person’ınız tarafından planlanacaktır ve emin olun bu deneyimi yaşamaya değer!

Tüm bu aktiviteler için yeterli enerjiniz olmay-acağından mı şüpheleniyorsunuz? Merak etmeyin! Çek mutfağı enerjisi yüksek yiyecekleriyle ünlü. Çek Cumhuriyeti’nde yemek alışkanlığı dünyanın geri kalanına göre oldukça farklı. Bizim geleneksel içe-ceğimiz bira ile kombine edilmiş oldukça ağır bir öğün. Yemekler oldukça lezzetlidir ve bu tat tomur-cuklarınız için harika bir deneyim olacaktır. Yemek yemek Çek milli sporudur diyebiliriz, göbeklerinin hakkını veren pek çok insanla tanışabilirsiniz, biz de onların göbeklerine “bira hamileliği” ya da “beerceps” adını veririz.

Klinik staj veya araştırma programına katıldığınızda en son teknoloji ile donatılmış or-tamlarda çalışacak, modern tedavi metodlarını ve en üst düzey araştırma projelerini izleyeceksiniz. Doktorlar çok samimiler ve tıbbın şaşırtıcı dünyas-ında size yol gösterecek tüm deneyimlerini aktar-maya hazırlar.
