As the song says- ―We wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year‖. At this writing we have just finished celebrating Thanksgiving and are looking forward to the remainder of this 2012 Holiday Season. Also in looking back over this year, we have so much to be thankful for and are looking forward to another prosperous and eventful 2013 at Lodge #1648. I would like to make you all aware of a couple of noteworthy services to the community your lodge has done recently: On November 19, 50 Thanksgiving meals were taken to the caregivers at Tut Fann Veteran’s Home. These meals included a turkey and all the fixings for a complete dinner. Thanks to those who helped with this effort. Funding for this was provided by a Beacon Grant from the Elks National Foundation.. On November 27, we had the incredible pleasure of presenting Space Camp Scholarships to the entire 5 th grade class of Chaffee Elementary School. The kids were totally surprised and so thankful for this wonderful gift. Our 1967 PER Elmer Hargis made this very generous endowment providing local children the opportunity to have (what the CEO of Space Camp described as) this ―life changing‖ experience. All of the television stations were there along with repre- sentatives from both Space Camp and the Huntsville School System. This was truly a proud day for your lodge. We will be further recognized by the Huntsville City School Board with an official commendation at their meeting in December. The Chaffee class will be going to Space Camp on February 17, 2013 and we will be attending their graduation on Friday morning. We held our 8 th annual Christmas Tree Lighting service on November 28. This was attended by over 30 children who definitely enjoyed the evening. This event serves as the official beginning of the holiday season for our lodge. As the song says- ―We wish you a Merry Christmas and a

Happy New Year‖. At this writing we have just finished

celebrating Thanksgiving and are looking forward to the

remainder of this 2012 Holiday Season. Also in looking

back over this year, we have so much to be thankful for and

are looking forward to another prosperous and eventful

2013 at Lodge #1648.

I would like to make you all aware of a couple of noteworthy services to the

community your lodge has done recently:

On November 19, 50 Thanksgiving meals were taken to the caregivers at Tut

Fann Veteran’s Home. These meals included a turkey and all the fixings for a

complete dinner. Thanks to those who helped with this effort. Funding for this

was provided by a Beacon Grant from the Elks National Foundation..

On November 27, we had the incredible pleasure of presenting Space Camp

Scholarships to the entire 5th grade class of Chaffee Elementary School. The

kids were totally surprised and so thankful for this wonderful gift. Our 1967

PER Elmer Hargis made this very generous endowment providing local children

the opportunity to have (what the CEO of Space Camp described as) this ―life

changing‖ experience. All of the television stations were there along with repre-

sentatives from both Space Camp and the Huntsville School System. This was

truly a proud day for your lodge. We will be further recognized by the Huntsville

City School Board with an official commendation at their meeting in December.

The Chaffee class will be going to Space Camp on February 17, 2013 and we

will be attending their graduation on

Friday morning.

We held our 8th annual Christmas Tree Lighting service on November 28. This

was attended by over 30 children who definitely enjoyed the evening. This event

serves as the official beginning of the holiday season for our lodge.

Check the calendar for upcoming events as there are several over the next few

weeks.

In closing, I sincerely wish you all the best and hope this holiday season finds

you happy and well. Exalted Ruler

HOUSE COMMITTEE REPORTS

We hope that all of our Members enjoyed a wonderful Thanks-

giving Day with family, friends, and other loved ones. As the

holiday season continues…..

A few private parties have already been booked in December –

but there is still room on the calendar for others interested in

hosting an event. Please encourage your friends and employers to

check our Lodge out for their holiday (and all other!) events – our

facility has been in the process of being upgraded and improved

over the past several months – with new furniture and equipment

coming in. Additionally, we compare very favorably with other

facilities in terms of rental costs and catering prices.

Wheel barrel tickets are now available and we urge everyone to

buy as many tickets as possible. The price is $1.00 each or 6

tickets for $5.00. Please note that tickets sales are also open to

Members’ families and other guests in order to maximize sales.

This years ―barrel‖ is again large and definitely a great value for

the price! All proceeds from the ticket sales fund the employee

bonus pool. This is a meaningful way to truly express our grati-

tude for the hard work and dedication exhibited by our

employees. The drawing for the wheel barrel will be Friday –

December 21st – at 9:00 PM.

Upcoming events are as follows:

December 1st – Saturday – begins with the monthly Members

breakfast at 9:00 am – 10:30 am. Please come down and enjoy

this great (if we do say so ourselves!) breakfast – the meal is deli-

cious and a bargain to boot. We encourage all of you to promote

new Membership and bring a new friend along as well to intro-

duce them to our Lodge.

December 2nd – Sunday – Elks Annual Memorial Service. The

traditional service will take place at 1:00 pm, with a luncheon

buffet immediately following the ceremony. Price is $7.50 per

person – menu: Oven baked ham, macaroni & cheese, green

bean casserole, sweet potatoes, salads, rolls, and desserts.

December 4th – Tuesday – Lodge meeting night – 7:00 pm (this

is the only Lodge meeting in December).

December 11th – Tuesday – Dirty Santa Pot Luck Party! – gift

value $20.00 - starting at 6:30 pm. Bring a favorite holiday dish

to share with friends. If you are a woman, bring a female gift –

men bring male gifts. This is a lot of fun, and more makes it

even merrier!

December 21st – Friday – Wheel Barrow drawing - 9:00 pm.

December 22nd – Saturday - Elks Christmas Party starting at 6:00

pm – entertainment sponsored by Levoy Smartt & Smartt Realty.

Holiday attire requested. We will have a DJ, a door prize, and a

buffet featuring heavy hors d’ouevres – $6.00 per person

donations.

December 23rd – Sunday - Employee Christmas Party 6:00 –

8:00 pm.

December 24th – Monday – the Club will CLOSE at 4:00 pm.

December 25th – Christmas Day – Egg Nog served from 10:00

am – 12:00 pm.

December 26th – Wednesday – Club open at 12:00 pm – bar only

– no lunch service.

December 31st – Monday – Karaoke New Year’s Party – starting

at 7:00 pm. The kitchen is not open so bring along a covered

dish for ―Pot Luck‖. The Club will provide the champagne at

midnight for the toasts!

January 1st – Tuesday – New Year’s Day - the Club will reopen

at 12:00 pm – bar only – no lunch service.

January 5th – Saturday – begins the first Members breakfast of

the New Year – 9:00 am – 10:30 am. Follow through on a new

year resolution to bring a new friend that might be interested in

becoming a member.

January 11th – Friday – a ―Salsa and Swinger‖ dance evening

has been proposed by an outside entertainer. Details are not yet

finalized – and we will post notice in the Club and on the Elks

email system when a decision is made to proceed.

Other upcoming events being discussed in the late January thru

February/March timeframe – include having a special card night

event, a ―Sinatra‖ night with Dave McConnell, a Mardi Gras din-

ner party with a Cajun band (already on the schedule for Saturday

– February 9th) , and a Neil Diamond night in March. Again,

check out your email and the posted notices in the Club as the

details are finalized for these and other activities.

A final House Committee reminder – Members are responsible

for signing all guests in on the visitor book located at the East

(Club) entrance of the building. All guests must depart the build-

ing when their Member host departs.

Last House Committee meeting in December is Monday, Decem-

ber 17th. Next House Committee meeting will be Monday, Janu-

ary 7th, 2013. We wish all of our Members and their families a

very safe and festive holiday season. Merry Christmas! Happy

New Year!

HUNTSVILLE ELKS LODGE SENDING CHAFFEE ELEMENTARY 5TH GRADERS TO SPACE CAMP—FEBRUARY 17—22, 2012

Chaffee Elementary School’s fifth grader got the surprise of their young lifetimes on Tues-day, November 27, when they learned that they would receive a free trip to Space Camp. The weeklong trip, at a cost of just under $30,000, is an endowment from Huntsville Elks Lodge and its late leader, Elmer Hargis, PER, who died in 2010, left the Elks Lodge a fund to benefit children who might not otherwise be able to go to Space Camp. The children, who, along with their teachers, had no idea what was about to happen, were ecstatic when told what their surprise was. Once they learned why they were called into the library, the schools’ library reverberated with shouts of excitement. The children nearly knocked over Dr. Deborah Barnhart, CEO and executive director of the U.S. Space & Rocket Center, when she asked for help holding the supersized check Exalted Ruler Jay Lockridge handed her. As Elks we can all be proud of this endowment left by PER Elmer Hargis. It is incredible to be able to make the children’s day with such a gift. It is what the Elks are all about.
