I had a discussion with Susan tonight, alluding to the structure of our Local G8 Committee.As I should have known, she was aware already of the General Committee/Sub-CommitteeStructure & was not pleased at being relegated down. She seemed to feel she &Janet Peakealways get shunted this ~ay.

I did my best, but it was a difficult conversation.

Can you try your luck with her? She clearly feels she will be a second-class Mayor. Perhapswe have the same problem with Janet Peake too.

Today I was pleased to read in the September 1st issue of McLeans that Minister Clement, M.P.is supporting an investigation of the development of a media centre/ice pad for the 2010 GSSummit.

We are confident that we can work together to design and build a world class, environmentallyresponsible media centre that can transition into a legacy for our community as well as tofulfill one of the prime objectives of our recently completed Community Master Plan.

Council has begun the process to work with a skilled consulting team to design and build aworld class facility. I have been in contact with Alan Graham, Events and Tourism Manager, Economic Development, Perth and KinrossCouncil regarding their experience in preparing for and hosting the 2005 G8 Summit. It is one region that has some.similarities to Muskoka ... and also sharing the English language, they are a valuable comparison. I earlier circulated theEconomic Impact Study to you on the effects of that Summit.

Alan notes: "Perth and Kinross Council (the host local authority) did use every opportunity to enhance the profile of thearea on the back of it including a programme of events in the lead up to the conference. This programme of events andactivities included consular visits to the area for G8 member countries, a tourism seminar, climate change conference,business fair as well as a range of community activities (many with an international theme). The Summit also coincidedwith the launch of a new place brand for Perthshire and this gave added impetus - outputs including a range of marketingmaterials (print, DVD etc) which were distributed to press and others at the "Scottish Village" pavilion at Gleneagles.>From a personal point of view, the event did give a real focus for the area (and Scotland) and demonstrated ourcredentials as a major conference destination."

I think this provides some incentive for the Muskoka Leadership Team to "go for it" in determining just how the region willbe readied for the Summit and perceived by all attending (officials, media, campaigners, observers).

I will be holidaying near this region next week and could, if it was of value to you, drop in to continue gathering feedbackon running a successful event.

Get your people on this ASAP because the squatters will be registering all the common sense ones and you don't want toget beaten to the punch.

No doubt life is busy these days for you.

I want to update you on our proposal for the media centre. We met with our projectmanagement group again yesterday, January 20. All hands have been working very hard on thisproject over the last several months. As you will see in the attached letter from our engineer, wemust make a decision on the go ahead for the project by Friday, January 30th at the very latest.

You will recall that our initial proposal was conditional upon having a go ahead by January 5. Iunderstand why that was not met, and I am sure you can understand why we need a solidanswer ifwe are to guarantee completion in time for the G8. I do not want to set this project upfor failure to deliver on time, as I am sure you don't either.

I am optimistic that we will get a go ahead in the budget next Tuesday. If that is the case, wewill need some form of firm confirmation to allow the Town ofHuntsville to issue the PurchaseOrder for the steel by Friday January 30th

• As you may know, the lead time for steel is longthese days as no on~ is carrying much inventory due to the tenuous business climate.

On another topic, we expect to hear back from our trip to the Waterloo area within the nextweek. I would be happy to share our ideas on that topic with you when you have time.

In fairness we actually send them the invoice package about 50 days after the month end. ie January invoices are paidhere in February and in mid march sent to the feds. Usually they review and have questions and we clarify. At this pointwe have answered all their questions. As well we have sent them requested pictures of the projects, substantialcompletion certificates etc.

Any support you can give us to advance this issue would be appreciatedo
