Vanessa Van Petten from California was always getting into trouble as a teenager. Her parents turned to parenting guidebooks for help with how to deal with their difficult daughter. One day Vanessa glanced at one and could not believe how totally wrong the advice was. Why? Because it was written by an adult. So, she took the matter into her own hands and, at the age of sixteen, published a parenting guide from a teenager’s perspective.

Four years later, while at college, Vanessa used money earned from babysitting to set up a website designed to help parents understand their teenagers better. The site, RadicalParenting.com, which receives 500 emails per week from parents, contains articles and videos by 120 ‘interns’, all aged between thirteen and nineteen. They give advice on subjects ranging from relationships with friends and family, divorce and drugs to internet habits.

For example, one mother who was concerned about her daughter’s ‘inappropriate’ clothing (like short skirts and low-cut tops) was advised to try asking her calmly if she thinks her clothing is appropriate for the occasion. The intern added that the worst time to start this conversation was when her daughter was about to walk out of the door on her way to a party.

Another email came from a father who was furious because his son was getting terrible school grades, even though he was offering him extra pocket money as an incentive to do well. His adviser told him that instead of attacking his son for doing badly, or linking his results to money, he should find ways to help him study and try to build his self-confidence.

To become a RadicalParenting intern, teenagers are asked to submit a writing sample and pass a phone interview. They are then offered further writing training on the job. Written permission from their parents is also required.

Imaginary FriendsA When American Oprah Winfrey hosted

her last ever chat show in May 2011, after 25 years on the air, millions of fans sat and watched it with a box of tissues at their side, feeling a terrible sense of sadness and loss. Getting depressed about saying goodbye to Oprah as you would for a friend may seem ridiculous, but research says that forming strong attachments to celebrities is entirely normal.

B Psychologists refer to this as a ‘parasocial’ relationship. Friendships usually form when people spend a lot of time together and share experiences and opinions. In the same way, parasocial relationships develop over time with people or characters we might see on TV, in films or in books. The big difference, though, is that parasocial relationships are one-sided.

C Parasocial relationships are very different from celebrity worship, which is

an unhealthy and sometimes dangerous obsession with a celebrity or public figure. Parasocial relationships, on the other hand, develop out of a human need to make bonds with other people and, apparently, it doesn’t matter whether we’ve met them or not. If you have a parasocial relationship with someone, you might find yourself thinking about them, feeling anxious when things go wrong for them or missing them when they are gone like you would a real friend. These feelings are natural and don’t suggest an inability to form friendships with real people.

D Parasocial relationships are nothing new, but have become increasingly common thanks to a dramatic growth in social media and reality TV. Through websites like Twitter and Facebook, celebrities and public figures can reveal details about their lives, personality, and tastes to interested followers, making them feel like they actually know them.

E Like our real friends, our parasocial friends can prevent feelings of loneliness by keeping us company. Recent research from Buffalo University in the USA has proved that watching a favourite TV show reduces feelings of sadness when someone is lonely or has fallen out with someone close to them. However, the one-sided nature of these relationships means you’ll never have a conversation with these people. It also means you could be left with a sense of loss when a show ends, and you have no control over it. This is known as a ‘parasocial break-up’.

F Nevertheless, these imaginary friends do have one big advantage. They can’t criticize your actions, taste in clothes, music or partner. They can’t give away your secrets and can’t talk about you behind your back. Parasocial friends are never disloyal!
