Which am I to adopt ?

• How to cross this ocean of phenomenal existence ?

• What is to be my fate ? And

• Which of the means* should I adopt –

• As to these I know not any thing.

• Please be condescend to save me, O lord,

• Tell me in detail – how to put an end to this relative existence.

*In our scriptures several paths

are prescribed for the liberation

Give up all fear

• As the seeker speaks thus

• Who is tormented by the afflictions of the world –

• Which are like the wild fire in forest

• And seeking the protection of the preceptor

• The saint grants a pleasant glance

• Softened with pity

• Spontaneously bids him ‘Give up all fear’

Stage is set for the sage

• To him who sought his protection

• Who is thirsting for liberation

• Who duly obeys the injunctions of the scriptures

• Who is of a serene mind

• Endowed with the equipments (sadhana means)

• The revered sage proceeds to inculcate the truth

out of sheer grace and pity.

This is direct adaptation from Mundaka I.ii.13

Thus, sing the Vedas

The Vedas instruct the seeker as follows

• Sradhdha –Faith – is the fundamental requisite

• Bhakti – Devotion – is the most essential current

• Dhyaana – Meditation – is the process supreme

• Yoga – The union – with the Real ; detachment

with the unreal – is the sublimation required

Whosoever abides in these gets liberated – from

this false identity conjured up by ignorance

The Inquiry

The humble submission – seeking answers

1. What is bondage – bandha ?

2. How has it come on the Self ?

3. How does it continue to exist ?

4. How is one freed from it ?

5. What is this Non-Self ?

6. Who is this Supreme Self ?

7. How can one discriminate between them ?

Blessed art thou

The Guru replies

• Blessed are you !

• You have achieved your life’s destination

• In the process you sanctify your kith and kin

• Because you are wishing to attain Brahmanhood

by getting rid of this Ignorance – bondages !

• But he has got none but himself

• to get rid of from his bondages

The Euphemism

• The pain and trouble due a head load of weight

• Can be shared and removed by others with you

• But how can others put a stop to your pangs of

hunger ? Meaning -

• You only can help yourself to get relieved of the

pain due to hunger and thirst

This euphemism explains that we have to strive

ourselves to free us from internal bondage

If a patient wants cure

restrictions in order to effect cure to the patient !

• The true nature of any thing is to be known

personally,

• Even extensive description by any will be futile

• How one can get rid of the bondage caused by

fetters of Ignorance, desire, action and the like –

• Except by one’s own self introspection (insight)

into the very origin and cause of the Ignorance.

• Will this be possible even after millions of years

with out personal effort and direct experience of

the truth ? – Nay.

Page 35: Vivaeka Choodaamani - Drsarma

The Fetters

• The eight types of fetters (astha bandhanas)described in our texts are

– Ghrunaa – Compassion

– Lajjaa – shyness and timidity

– Bhayam – Fear and inner innate inhibitions

– Sankaa – always doubtful mind

– Jugupsaa – hatred and intolerance

– Kulam – The family and inheritance

– Seelam – The moral and ethical conduct

– Jaati – The caste into which we are born

Liberation is impossible

• Liberation is impossible either by mechanically

studying Sankya philosophy or by

• adopting Hata yoga etc., (physical restraints) or by

• working for material ends – getting riches, Swarga

etc., - Sa kaama karma or by

• theoretical knowledge of all the 14 sciences.

• Liberation is possible only by realization of one’s

Identity with the Brahman. Not by any other means

Page 38: Vivaeka Choodaamani - Drsarma

The Fourteen Lores

• The Four Vedas : Rig, Yajur, Saama and Atharva

• The Six Veda angas namely

– Sikshaa : pronunciation and articulation

– Chandas : prosody – poetic rules

– Vyakaranam : grammar

– Niryut : Etymology of words (vyutpath)

– Jyotisha : Astrology

– Kalpa : Rituals and ceremonies

• Dharma, Meemaamsa, Tarka (nyaya) & Puraanaas (18 in number)

• Loka vaasana : Our interactions with the material world of objects and the consequent permanent inner imprints

• Saastra vaasana : The scriptural knowledge and the karmas we do as per our comprehension of the saastras – they leave the imprints

These three together decide our next birth

will not confer the sovereignty.

What is sovereignty – The identity with the Brahman.

Who are the enemies – The gang of six foes within

What is to be enjoyed – The Bliss absolute.

Treasure seeker

• Be well informed of the location and nature of the treasure you are seeking by a competent person.

• Unearth the treasure by clearing the external matter which has hidden the treasure – such as earth, stones, debris etc., - Not merely calling it out by name !

• Finally grasping it and enjoining it.

What is this treasure ?

How best to excavate it ?

Who is qualified to enjoy it ?

Page 59: Vivaeka Choodaamani - Drsarma

Dr.Sarma@works 59

The treasure eternal

• Brahma vidopadaesam – competent instruction by a the wise seer

• Uncover the overlaying maaya – the pancha kosaas and their effects by the instruction of the Brahmavit

• Contemplation, reflection, meditation and so forth constitute the process

• The treasure is Bliss Supreme – The True Identity

Only by self-effort

• Therefore the wise and the motivated

• Should personally strive by all the means in

their power to

• Free from the bondages of repeated births

and deaths

• Just as in the case of taking medicine ..etc.,

Page 62: Vivaeka Choodaamani - Drsarma

Dr.Sarma@works 62

Summary of the examples

• Parents can be liberated by children from

monetary debts – not from ‘the bondages’

• Head load can be alleviated – not hunger..etc.,

• One must consume his own medicine for cure-

others taking it will not help him.

• Subjective experience alone is essential to cognize

any thing – To know the moon and moon light

• The snake bite man – proper antidote etc.,

Page 63: Vivaeka Choodaamani - Drsarma

None but Identity

• The hata yoga, the sankhya, the sakama karma,

the fourteen lores

• The musical talents like veena recital

• The eloquence, oratory, scholastic learning

• The vedas, the sassatras, the mantras, the

oushadhaas …

Are all but in vain to realize the absolute

Identity : ‘Brahma – jiva ekatwa bodha’

Pertinent inquiry

O! My dear

• Your question (inquiry) today is excellent

• It is approved by those versed in scriptures

• It is aphoristic – terse and pithy

• It is pregnant with meaning

• It is pertinent for salvation – fit to be

known by all seekers of liberation

• O ! Learned one

• Listen with absolute attention

• to what I am going to divulge

• By listening, you shall in very short

time get liberated from this samsaara

– 3. Self control or external restraint (gate ways ) – Dama

– 4. Forbearance or extreme tolerance – Titeeksha

Bliss absolute

• The nine steps continued …

– 6. Attentive hearing – Sravanam – ‘shad vidha uktibhir

vaedanta vaakyanaam adviteeya brahmani taatparya

nischayah Sravanam’ – the six are : 1.Upakrama

upasmahaaram (how to act and withdraw), 2.Abhyaasam

(constant practice), 3.Apoorvatwam (excellence in the

act), 4.Phalam (detached from fruit), 5.Artha vaadam

(analysis of the process), 6. Upapatti (the proof)

– 7. Reflection – Mananam – constant contemplation

– 8. Meditation – Dhyaanam – nidhi dhyaasam

– 9. Bliss supreme – nirwaana sukham – Jeevan mukti

Discrimination

• Now I am going to tell you

– What you ought to know

– The discrimination between the Self and

non-Self

– The so called Real and the unreal

• Listen to this attentively and decide about it

in your mind after careful analysis.
